• Can't add NetworkManager applet to gnome panel

  I have researched this problem extensively and I can't seem to find an answer. In Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, I want to connect to my VPN through the NetworkManager applet. I installed all the network manager packages, including the gnome client. I understand I need to add the "Notification Area" to the panel, which I have done. I checked that the NetworkManager is running: nate@nate-desktop:~$ service network-manager status network-manager start/running, process 763 In /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, I have added managed=true (don't know if this matters, but I saw it suggested on one forum): nate@nate-desktop:~$ more /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf # This file is installed into /etc/NetworkManager, and is loaded by # NetworkManager by default. To override, specify: '--config file' # during NM startup. This can be done by appending to DAEMON_OPTS in # the file: # # /etc/default/NetworkManager # [main] plugins=ifupdown,keyfile [ifupdown] #managed=false managed=true I restarted NetworkManager and tried rebooting, too. At this point, it looks like NetworkManager is running but it's not appearing in the NotificationArea of the panel. I don't know what else to try. Any ideas?

• Distribution upgrade (12.04 -> 14.04 LTS) halted while unpacking/installing packages

  As the title states...it just stopped unpacking/installing. "Preparing to unpack .../lirc_0.9.0-0ubuntu5_amd64.deb ..." then stopped in its tracks. Everything else is still running. The update manager process is still alive; if I hit ctrl-c, it gives me the warning message about leaving the system in a broken state. Also, if I run top, there is a process called "trusty" which is still running. I have NOT killed either process. lsb_release -a gives: LSB Version: core-2.0-amd64:core-2.0-noarch:core-3.0-amd64:core-3.0-noarch:core-3.1-amd64:core-3.1-noarch:core-3.2-amd64:core-3.2-noarch:core-4.0-amd64:core-4.0-noarch Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS Release: 14.04 Codename: trusty I assume that if I try to restart update-manager, I won't be offered the option to upgrade again.   I'm trying to install Android SDK on Ubuntu but fail when I try to use the SDK Manager and AVD Manager to install Android platforms. I've downloaded: android-sdk_r04-linux_86.tgz The I start the SDK Manager and AVD Manager (UI) according to the README file: ./tools/android And I get the following Installed Packages: - Install SDK Tools, revision 4 Available Packages: - https://dl-ssl.google.com/android/repoisotry/repository.xml - This repository requires a more recent version of the Tools. • Installing trunk Mono on Ubuntu

  I am quite new to linux. I have to install Mono on a linux machine from souce code. I know the general method: read-instructions, install-dependencies, ./configure, make, make install. However this approach doesn't fit into the general Ubuntu package management routine. Other programs I install from .debs won't be able to notice the version of Mono. Also I can't remove Mono using standard Ubuntu package management tools. Is there an easy solution? I have seen that Ubuntu actually has several separate packages for the Mono project. Should I build packages from Mono? How can I follow the same conventions as the ubuntu packagers? Where should I look for info on packaging? Can you give step by step instructions? Thanks!

• SSRS 2008 Report Manager Error

  I have just installed SQL Server 2008 including Reporting Services on Windows Server 2003. I'm having a problem though accessing the Report Manager. When the Reporting Service is first started I can access it fine but after maybe an hour when I try and access it I get an error saying: Unable to connect to the remote server. The reporting service is still running at this point. I can connect to it through Reporting Services Configuration Manager and clicking on the Web Service URL gives a directory listing (I assume that is correct behaviour). If I stop and start the service through Reporting Services Configuration Manager then I can access Report Manager once again (although in maybe an hour I will get the same error once again). I've installed the latest SP1 service pack. I'm using the same domain account to run all the SQL services. The report server is set to use the default ReportServer virtual directory, is set to IP address All Assigned, TCP Port 80 and no SSL certificate. The report manager is set to use the default Reports virtual directory, IP address All Assigned, TCP Port 80 and no SSL certificates. In the log file I get an error: Unable to connect to remote server HTTP status code 500 An attempt was made to access a socket in a way forbidden by its access permissions. Does anyone have any idea why this is happening? I've searched the net but haven't been able to find a solution.

• No apache MPM package installed error

  I'm getting "No apache MPM package installed" when trying to configure virtual hosts on apache2.2. I compiled apache2.2 from source and I did not use --with-mpm=NAME option. I thought it will compile with default one then. So the question is, is there any way to check if MPM is installed indeed and I only need to enable it somewhere? If it is not, is there any way to add it without recompiling apache? Or, is there any way to have virtual hosts without it at all? I was doing vhost configuration as per this example. Thanks in advance for your help ;) EDIT: prefork is installed. The question is, why after a2ensite / a2dissite and /etc/init.d/apache2 reload I still get error "No MPM package installed"...

• Device Manager in read-only remote mode when local

  Hello - since configuring a Windows Web Server 2008 R2 x64 to be hardened for an internet-facing deployment I receive this: "Device Manager is running in read-only mode because you are running it on a remote computer." when entering Device Manager. I have tried reversing the changes I have made, such as: Re-adding Client for Microsoft Networks Re-enabling NetBIOS over TCP-IP Re-adding File and Printer Sharing Disabling the Windows Firewall in all profiles (public, domain, private) I get no joy. It looks like a Microsoft ballsup. I'll try and use Process Monitor to have a look. Google returns only 1 page for this error. Luke

• Java file manager won't load in Firefox

  I am using Webmin and I can't get the file manager to load in Firefox. It is a simple, Java based file manager. When I try to load it I get the following error: This module requires java to function, but your browser does not support java Internet Explorer works fine and I have yet to try on Chrome. Java is installed and I have the same problem on Windows and Linux. Java seems to work fine with everything else, with the exception of webcams. Any advice on the issue would be appreciated. Edit: I just checked and it doesn't work in Chrome either.

• Windows Boot Manager, linking a 'device' to boot linux

  I'm attempting to boot linux on a UEFI-GPT machine with a Windows Boot Manager (WBM). So far I have installed Archlinux (Arch) with Grub. The grubx64.efi is successfully on my windows boot partition and I can see the option to use it in UEFI-BIOS, selecting this loads grub and I'm able to get into Arch fine. I have noticed that in the Windows Boot Manager, selecting from the splash screen, 'Change defaults or choose other options' 'Choose other options' 'Use a device', shows the boot options as in UEFI-BIOS, in my case grub shows as 'Linux'. Selecting 'Linux' reboots the computer and loads grub then Arch. Is there anyway to use this entry for the device 'Linux' to show directly on the WBM splash screen under the entry for Windows 8.1? Ideally i'd like the 'Arch Linux' to link to the 'Linux' device. Guidance with bcdedit appreciated, thanks in advance.

  Where is the configuration manager for SQL Express 2005? I need to configure SQL Server for TCP/IP but there is no configuration manager with the package. I see SQL Server Database Publishing Wizard, I see SQL Server Migration Assistant for Access, but no Configuration Manager. According to the MSDN, there should be one. I've even looked online for a download of the Configuration Manager for SQL Server 2005, but could not find one. Did I miss something in the download or should I just scrap SQL Server Express and download the full-blown SQL Server for Developers?

  When I want to install the flightgear:amd64 package, it requests to install the simgear2.8.0:amd64 package onto my Linux Mint 13 KDE 64-bit system. But I cannot install simgear2.8.0:amd64 because I could not find it in the GetDeb repositories, could not install it from PlayDeb, and could not find a .deb file online. So, I tried to install simgear2.8.0:i386, but it wants me to install (read reinstall) libapr1, but it is already installed properly with its dependencies. By the way, libapr1 is necessary for my Apache installation. Could you help me fix my problem?

  When I open Reporting Services Configuration Manager on my server, an error message appears that says: Reporting Services Configuration Manager An unknown error has occurred in the WMI Provider. Error Code 800706B3 This error appears before I can even attempt to connect to an SSRS instance. In addition to this problem, I'm not able to connect to my SSRS instance via SSMS on my desktop. When I attempt to connect, I get the following error message: Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. (mscorlib) Additional information: The operation could not be completed. (WinMgmt) Information about my environment: Server: Win Server 2K3 x64, SQL 2005 x64 SP3 Build 9.0.4053 Desktop: Windows 7 Enterprise x64 Steps I have already taken: I have installed the latest service pack on my server and workstation. • Run SSIS package from SQL client

  I deployed my working package on server which is enterprise edition, SSIS installed on it. When I tries to run package by connecting to integration services engine from my desktop SQL client (which doesn't have SSIS installed) I get error "The task "Send Mail Task" cannot run on this edition of Integration Services. It requires a higher level edition." Does it mean that I need to login to the server (RDP) and then run the package? Also, when I schedule the package thru SQL agent it fails saying login time out but my windos auth login works for everything from connecting, deployment. Any clue?

  Hi, in GPO, this item Computer > Software settings > Assigned applications > IE8_package was on Security tab set "Authenticated users" to "Deny". After that it disappeared from GPO, it is there, but nowhere shown. The intention was to disable installation of that package for now, yet having other packages in that GPO still installed. I know it was stupid decision now. Is there any way to display that package back? Please help.

• Go import error while trying to import web.go package after using goinstall

  With halfdans advice, I was successfully able to use goinstall github.com/hoisie/web.go without any errors after installing git first. However, now when I try to compile the sample code given, go is not finding the web package. I get the error, main.go:4: can't find import: web On this code package main import ( "web" ) func hello(val string) string { return "hello " + val } func main() { web.Get("/(.*)", hello) web.Run("0.0.0.0:9999") } Is there something special I need to do in order for it to recognize the package? I found the package source at $GOROOT/src/pkg/github.com/hoisie/web.go/web. I tried that path as the import and it still did not like that.

  I have the free, standalone core Hyper-V Server 2012 running on my physical machine. I set up remote management from my Windows 8 client. When I proceed to create a virtual machine I would like to install the OS from a usb thumb drive but it is not recognized in Hyper-V Manager on my client (when the USB is plugged into the physical server) nor is it recognized in Server Manager under File and Storage Services Volumes Is there a role needed to recognize external usb flash drives? Because I think this standalone version is just core Hyper-V role and that's it... but this is such a basic functionality. Can anybody comment.

I want to create a sproc that takes an Srn and returns back all the staff under that Srn in the structure. If there is a score for QuestionId of 16 then that indicates a completed survey. I would like to return a line for the Srn entered (The top manager) with a count of completed surveys for the direct reports under that manager. Under that I would like each manager under the original manager with a count of completed surveys for each of their direct reports and so on.   I work on remote Windows Server 2008 machine over RDP and frequently need to revive broken copy&pasting over RDP. Which is killing rdpclip process in Task Manger (tab "Processes") and launching it gain by: switching to tab Applications -- pressing button "New Task..." -- typing 'rdpclip'-- clicking OK. Well, I do not need to type 'rdpclip' if it is the last used command. The problem that in "Create New Task" of Windows Task Manager I always launch rdpclip only but it shows the last run program from Windows command prompt (Win +R), usually it is "notepad" for me. Is it possible to bind the last used command/task to Task Manager only? and how?

• How to repackage NVIDIA .run drivers into .deb with DKMS

  At present, Ubuntu offers the 195.36.24 drivers as nvidia-current in their repository. This packaged driver is pretty cool as it uses DKMS so you don't have to keep reinstalling the driver after a new kernel version. The NVIDIA .run package drivers are at version 257 (beta) but they don't use DKMS so the graphics screws up every time a new kernel is installed and you don't reinstall the driver. How can I modify the .run to use DKMS and even better, package it as a deb package?
