• 3ds Max CAT to XNA

  Has anyone successfully used the CAT bone system in 3ds Max and exported the file into XNA? If so, what was your method of doing so? There are a number of methods of doing this apparently, but the ones I've tried have not worked. I used the Panda Exporter which creates a .X file. This seems to be the latest way of going about this, but when it's loaded in XNA, there is an error saying something about the bone weights. This happens when I export with and without CAT bones.

Currently, what I know and what I do is: to design relational database(3NF), make separate class for each table put that in MVC implement modular programming ...write code and hope for the best... I presume that next things I need to learn more deeply are: programming codex(naming, commenting, conventions...), organize functions building interfaces organizing custom made libraries, organizing API that I'm using, documenting, team work... ... At last what my job is, it does't need to affect your answer, PHP CodeIgniter developer.

• Prevent APT from overwriting JCE jars

  My server runs a Java application that requires I replace a few java library files with ones I downloaded on my own. This has to do with JCE security extensions and isn't really relevant to my question. I've found that these library files tend to get overwritten by apt when it later updates my java package. Is there a apt-friendly way of masking these specific files so apt won't touch them? Potential Solutions I'm considering just removing the write flag from the files, though I'm expecting this will cause apt to spew its guts everywhere when it later tries to overwrite them? Perhaps there's a java custom library directory I don't know of, where I can park my files and they'll be loaded instead of the package's defaults? The last-resort option I'm considering is writing a cron job to periodically replace the files with my versions. I hate this option.

• How to include high resolution version of thumbnail

  I'm running a tube site that has a thumbnail for each post/video (running via Wordpress, 500k posts). When I first created the thumbnails they were a fairly large size, around 640px in width each and because of that I was seeing a lot of traffic from Google Images. After streamlining the site and resizing all of the thumbnails down to 170px rather than scaling them down I'm worried that Google isn't going to rank the images as high as they would be at a larger resolution, so is there a way to include the higher res versions and serve them to be indexed instead of the smaller ones?

• How do I hire testers by giving them a buggy app for testing their efficiency?

  My boss wants to recruit testers based on their testing efficiency (number of bugs identified). So, he's shortlisted 5 people and I need to give them an app full of bugs and see how they fare in reporting obvious bugs, and hidden bugs. I know.... it kind of sounds weird. I guess, this is just like the coding world, where you hire a programmer by assessing his/her programming ability (which is a little easier). Once hired, these testers would be testing a java swing app, so their familiarity of testing frameworks/tools is not really required. So, my question here is - How do I go about finding buggy apps (web/non-web), preferably java ones, that I can have the shortlisted testers have a go at? How would you go about this task if your boss asks you to do so? I am kind of clueless at this point - I googled a bit, thought about finding new apps on sourceforge with lots of bugs, but both approaches didn't work for me.

• Cannot Install Wine Windows platform loader both from Terminal and software Center

  I recently installed Ubuntu 13.04 on my PC. I want to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2010, so I tried to install WINE. I tried to install from the Terminal and from the Software Center. Both times, it failed in the middle of process. This is the error. • Is PluralSight worth the cost [closed]

  I am an looking at a few different supplemental learning courses to help me beef up my skills but unsure which one to use. I am interested in PluralSight because I work for the government and they use all Microsoft technologies for the most part. I like the courses on PluralSight but the price tag is pretty hefty. I am not sure how good the courses are because I cannot view the ones I want so I am a tad bit skeptical. I am sure some of you have PluralSight, do you think its a good investment for your learning or should I just stick with books/internet? Any suggestions?

• New to CG shader programming, what program should I use to write and test them?

  I have started witting some shaders. First ones were fairly easy to write in notepad but now I need something with a bit more meat. I have checked rendermonnkey that seems to support CG but it is really old and don't know if it is a good option. On the other hand there exist this FX Composer 2.0 but it seems somthing that could really distract me from learning shaders because it seems a pretty deep program. Are there any other possibilities? There's a really nice alternative to write shaders named ShaderToy but just supports GLSL. Any information will be really welcomed. Thanks in advance.

• Is there a list of shortcuts which are not reserved in any major browser?

  In the past, when I implemented shortcuts for web applications, I used different ones for different browsers: for example Ctrl+Shift+A was used in Chrome, but would be something else, like Ctrl+Shift+C in Firefox, since Firefox reserves the Ctrl+Shift+A shortcut for add-ons. Actually, I have a project where it would be nice to have the same shortcuts for every browser. Is there a list of shortcuts which are not reserved in any major browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, IE and Opera) or do I have to do my own by listing? Google wasn't helpful, since it rather shows the list of shortcuts which are common to all major browsers.

• How do I find the closest points(thereby forming a polygon) enclosing a particular point?(see image)

  I am working with a game engine, and my task is to add code for simulating fracture of rigid meshes. Right now I'm only working on breaking a cube. I am using Voronoi's algorithm to make a (realistic)fractured shard and I am using the half-plane method to generate a voronoi cell. Now the way I do this is for every seed point, I make planes that are perpendicular bisector planes(the straight black lines in the image) with rest of the seed points and I calculate the intersections of all these planes to give me distinct points(all the orange dots). I've gotten this far. Out of all these calculated intersection points, I only need the ones that are closest and enclosing the seed point(the points encircled in red) and I need to discard all the rest. Information that I have : 1) Plane equations of all planes(defined by normalized normal vectors and their distance from origin) 2) Points of intersection(that I've calculated) Can anybody help me find out how I can find the points encircled in red? • Creating a bootable USB recovery drive to be used by someone who isn't computer savvy

  I am looking for a way to prepare an image of an Ubuntu machine which would be bootable and installable in the easiest way possible. I'm actually preparing an Ubuntu machine for someone living far, and not computer savvy. If he ever has troubles with his installation, he could just put a USB drive in, boot the machine and everything would be resetted for him. I know there are many methods of creating/loading an image of a drive, but the ones I've found so far have complicated menus with several options to choose from, etc. Ideally, perhaps only asking a Yes/No question such as "Would you like to reinstall?" would be great. Does such a tool exist? Thank you in advance!

• Usefulness of the Backlinks shown in Webmaster Tools

  Is the list of links for a site shown in Google Webmaster Tools a complete list or just a sample? I've noticed that the links in there appear to be all the ones I didn't think would have any real value - either because they were nofollow or from irrelivant sites. The few I did think would be some use have never shown up and there's also some links that are sometimes there and sometimes not (such as my linkedIn profile). Does this mean that the missing links don't/no longer carry any value? It almost appears that the list is there for Google to either inform you about problems (there was a useful list there when someone tried to SPAM my site) or mis-imform you about which link-building strategies work or not (to keep people guessing about what works or not).

• Creating my own kill cam

  I plan on creating my own kill cam system for a sandbox tool set. After thinking about the mechanics of the kill cam itself, however, I'm quite lost. I'm trying to recreate the ones commonly seen in call of duty games that show, from the view of the killer, the actual killing scene. My Thoughts: -I can't just keep in memory when people kill others because I wouldn't know when to start the 'recording process'. There is on way for me to accurately determine when somebody is 'about' to kill someone. -My only real idea so far is to have a complete duplicate of everything loaded off to the side copying all the movement from the original world but with a 10 second delay. That way, all the kill cams would be 10 seconds long and the persons camera would just be moved to the second world of their killer. My Questions: Is there already an accepted way to do this? Does anybody have any good ideas for something like this? Thanks if you can!

• How do I improve my ability to manipulate code quickly, not wpm?

  I have seen several questions on here about touch typing and words per minute but not about improving ones ability to manipulate text using keyboard shortcuts, bindings etc. I have tried putting a cheat sheet of keyboard shortcuts next to my monitor but I can never incorporate them in my 'flow'. I have also tried the 'just use vi and don't touch the mouse' method but that only helps me with navigating code and not editing. I would prefer to use some application (or game) to learn text manipulation. But it looks like nothing like that exists (app idea?). I'm open to other suggestions too.

  I'm looking for a way to represent a dynamic transform hierarchy (i.e. one where nodes can be inserted and removed arbitrarily) that's a bit more efficient than using a standard tree of pointers . I saw the answers to this question ( Efficient structure for representing a transform hierarchy. ), but as far as I can determine the tree-as-array approach only works for static hierarchies or dynamic ones where nodes have a fixed number of children (both deal-breakers for me). I'm probably wrong about that but could anyone point out how? If I'm not wrong are there other alternatives that work for dynamic hierarchies?

  Hi all I know there's some decent material floating around relating to more specific areas, but wanted to get some opinions from people who have had bad experiences in the past. I have a project where I can have a say on the design of a B2C web app, which has some external API interfaces. UX is crucial as is speed. Not sure what technology will be used at this stage. In designing this application, I want to make sure obvious features are not left out (i.e. ones that make maintenance/development easier). • wrong GNOME logo at startup after 12.04 upgrade

  I'm not too expert of Ubuntu, but after a quite painful upgrade to version 12.04 (from 11.10), which first required to reinstall wireless drivers in order to work properly, and after an update from the Update Manager that I ran soon after the upgrade, I have a very strange problem coming up: at login page, where you choose your user among the list of the available ones, I can also see the list of available IDEs (Gnome, Gnome classic, Unity, Unity 2d, etc) but the funny thing is that the classic "foot" logo normally associated to the GNOME selection has now disappeared, and instead the "gear" logo (the one normally related to Unity, is on the side of the "gnome" choice. Note that the foot logo remains associated to the Gnome Classic item, and that the "gear" logo is still associated to the various versions of Unity available. This is not serious, since I can still access my GNOME or Unity environment, but I wonder if I can fix this up.

  Hey all, I currently work at a pretty big website that has visitors from around the globe. My job is to help out on the SEO, and one thing we've been discussing lately is the use of international TLD's. The ones we use range between: (partly) translated websites like .es and .de that serve most of the content in the country's language non-translated (english) websites for non-english languages (due to a lack of translations) like .ro and .cz english websites for english speaking countries with localized TLD's (.co.nz, .co.uk) On one hand I really have the feeling this is causing a lot of duplicate content, especially for the last two categories of TLD's. On the other hand though it seems a lot like country-specific TLD's tend to score a lot better in that country's Google. Would it be advisable to keep on using these domains, or should we canonicalize them all to the .com version?

• wireless not connecting in 12.04 update

  I just updated from 10.04 to 12.04. I am not very knowledgeable at all with Ubuntu since it is still relatively new to me. I went through the whole update today and yesterday and now that it is finished it will not acknowledge that there are any wireless connections around, nor does it give me an option to pick one. it just tells me what ones I've used in the past. is there any way that someone can help me?   I already bought a domain name .com on godaddy for my company. I would like to reserve the same name with country specific domain extention, but not sure where to buy them and how to do it. Here are the ones that I would like to buy: Europe: fr, co.uk, de, ch, es, it, nl, se, no, ru australia: com.au asia: sg Godaddy has all except 1 in europe, australia and singapore. Should I find a website that sell all of them or should I buy some of them in godaddy and others elsewhere? Any suggestions where to buy them? • Fast software color interpolating triangle rasterization technique

  I'm implementing a software renderer with this rasterization method, however, I was wondering if there is a possibility to improve it, or if there exists an alternative technique that is much faster. I'm specifically interested in rendering small triangles, like the ones from this 100k poly dragon: As you can see, the method I'm using is not perfect either, as it leaves small gaps from time to time (at least I think that's what's happening). • Language-independent sources on collision detection

  While making a Pong clone with a friend, we had to implement some collision detection. For research purposes, my friend dug up a book called "AdvancED Game Design with Flash" by Rex Van Der Spuy. This book was clearly targeted at implementing collision detection in ActionScript, and I also have some problems with how the concepts are presented, e.g. presenting one method as better than another, without explaining that decision. Can anyone recommend some good material on collision detection? I'd prefer it if kept the implementation details as language-independent as possible, e.g. by implementing the concepts in pseudo-code. Language-specific materials are not completely unwelcome though, though I'd prefer those to be in either Java, C#, F# or Python or similar languages, as those are the ones I'm most familiar with. :-) Lastly, is there perhaps widely known and used book on collision detection that most people should know about, like a 'the book on collision detection'?
