• What are some really simple rules to keep a PHP codebase organized?

  I'm new to PHP in a professional context. I want a few macro thumb rules to keep me on the enlightened path. Here are a few I'm proposing to myself: no absolute paths in include|require(_once)? statements no .. dirname(foo), or other means of walking up in include|require(_once)? statements put libs on the include path, not in subdirectories You can see that all of this is focusing on managing dependencies, because that is the problem I've encountered thus far. What other thumb-rule solutions to macro level problems do you have?

• Modern workflow / project architecture with PHP

  I wonder how one professional developer would design the backend-part of his application. I try to use PHP as seldom as possible and only for data serving/saving purposes. To do so, i would create a module/class for every greater part of my application, then write some single script files which are called by javascript. E.g: User clicks a "retrieve data" button javascript will call retrieveData.php retrieveData.php will create an instance of the needed class, then executes myInstance-retrieve() the data is returned to my JS by retrieveData.php However, i see some disadvantages in this practice: I will need a single scipt file for every action, (e.g retrieveData.php, saveData.php etc) I need a man-in-the-middle step: from JS to my single script, to my classes How are modern applications designed to accomplish what i need to do?

  I am developing a simple mainly static website using WordPress (because maybe in the future I will add some dynamic content) for a company. The new site have to follow the structure of the old site that requires the presence of a vertical main menu in the left column that contains the link to all the statics pages in the site. This is the old site structure: http://www.saranistri.com/ Now I have installed a new WordPress test site (this is only a test site): http://onofri.org/example/ As you can see in the left columns I have put two main menu vetical widgets that implements a possible choise for the maun menù (the top menù upon the header must be eliminated in the final implementation) I want to know some opinions about: 1) Which of the two version is better? Do you have some additional ideas about the CSS style of this vertical menu? 2) What could I do to give a more professional look to this site?   I have a small PHP/MySQL project in the works and I'm looking for somewhere to host it. My criteria are: Ability to run PHP/MySQL (either natively, or contains the ability to install). Ability to manipulate the web server, so I can make pretty URLs. Not spammy (if you've ever looked for hosting, you know what I mean). Semi-professional - no ridiculous downtime or long response time. I obviously don't need anything spectacular (I'm not aiming to be the next Facebook) but something that doesn't seem cheap. Reasonably priced - obviously this is a side project for fun so I'm not planning on making or dispensing any sort of "serious" revenue.

• Is it necessary to understand what's happening at the hardware level to be a good programmer?

  I'm a self-taught programmer, just in case this question is answered in CS 101. I've learned and used lots of languages, mostly for my own personal use, but occasionally for professional stuff. It seems that I'm always running into the same wall when I run into trouble programming. For example, I just asked a question on another forum about how to handle a pointer-to-array that was returned by a function. Initially I'm thinking that I simply don't know the proper technique that the designers of C++ set up to handle the situation. But from the answers and discussions that follow I see that I don't really get what happens when something is 'returned'. How deep a level of understanding of the programming process must a good programmer achieve?

• How do you ensure consistent experience across multiple graphics cards (or even driver versions)?

  So I was writing a simple 2D game with OpenGL and SDL and had this problem when there was awful tearing when running in windowed mode (even though I explicitly asked SDL_SetVideoMode to use double buffering). Didn't worry about it all too much because most of the time the game grabs the entire screen, windowed mode is just for debugging. Anyway, yesterday I updated my nVidia drivers and tearing disappeared, the game runs smooth and looks nice in windowed mode too. I can see how the problem may be in the graphics driver, but this leads to a question. Obviously, professional game developers have to deal with a lot of different hardware/software configurations. What are the techniques they use to make sure the game looks the roughly the same on different graphics cards or even the same model of graphics card, but with different driver versions?

  I have a community site that sends emails after certain actions like 1) When someone makes a comment 2) When someone does something called "suggest solution" 3) When someone makes a comment in the suggested solution which is different from a regular comment. What I am wondering is what is the best way to make the from field of the email appear?   Recently, Here at the company, more than one programmer was appointed in charge for a LightSwitch(C#) software development project and immediately there was a need of some sort of source control/sync. We have never used Team Foundation Server but we'd gladly use it if it's worth it. Is it the right tool to use for synchronising code between programmers? Does it have the needed features? Do you have any other tool in mind? (I have used TortoiseSVN but it was too simple and 'texty' if you know what I mean, we need a professional tool) What other features does Team Foundation has that we can use? It only actually tells users how to run JS code on page 311, where users are told of the following solutions: "Client-side JavaScript code is embedded within HTML documents in four ways: Inline, between a pair of <script> and </script> tags From an external file specified by the src attribute in a <script> tag In an HTML event handler attribute, such as onclick or onmouseover In a URL that uses the special javascript: protocol." I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

• What exactly does an installer do and why might I need one?

  this is probably the noob-question of the day: So I've written this game. Now there's the .exe file that does the work, a folder with my beautiful, beautiful assets and a bunch of .dll files and other stuff that I probably shouldn't touch. To run the game, I copy the whole lot to the desired computer, double-click the .exe file and start shooting some dudes. Yay! But what exactly is the difference between that and using an installer? What else does an installer do besides copying files and looking more professional than a .zip-file? Is there generally a lot of patching/configuring involved when trying to make a game run on a different computer? I tested my game on all windows computers I could get my greedy fingers on and it works great. Thanks for your time.

• Is OpenGL 1.x deprecated?

  I'm familiar with OpenGL 1.x. I typically use SDL with OpenGL 1.4 on Linux, and I've never run into problems, even on my modern system. I've read on the OpenGL site about deprecation and compatibility contexts, but I'm still unclear as to whether it's safe to continue to use old versions of OpenGL, as opposed to using old features in newer versions. When functionality is marked deprecated ... future versions of OpenGL may remove it. Does deprecation simply imply that those functions can't be used alongside newer features? More specifically, are there any systems today (other than embedded) where OpenGL 1.x isn't available? The old-skool stuff like, glBegin, glEnd, glDrawPixels, etc. Note: I'm not a professional games developer, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance. I'm working on a mostly 2D game that I would like to keep multi-platform, supporting at least Linux, Mac, and Windows.

  I keep lots of notes as I work - code snippets, TODO lists, account details, links, comments. I currently use plain text files for this - very simple and robust but a bit last-century. I would like features similar to HTML - e.g. to embed pictures, formatting, and crucially hyperlinks within my notes. One particular use-case is an implementation of Getting Things Done - more or less, a collection of hierarchical TODO lists, which I'd implement with hyperlinks between tasks. Most WYSIWYG HTML editors seem to be aimed at web designers, creating beautiful pages for professional websites. Is there a simple tool / editor more appropriate for how I want to use it? (or advice from anyone doing the same)

  Beginners and professional, on blogs, in forums and chatrooms - people say it everywhere: C++ oh dear god no The short form of the question: For what reason is C++ so widely disliked and people are horrified by the imagination of using it for some project? I have been using a lot of different languages, including C++ by now, and I can only say that I really like it. I'm far more horrified by Delphi than by C++. Actually, I find it's an almost perfect, compiled language! I've been doing a lot of different projects in C++ as well, ranging from 3D video games to webservers and emulators for old video game consoles. And I still do not see the problem everyone else seems to have with it! It was hard for me to get into it of course, as it is quite complex and has a lot of depth, but after that it's simply great.

Create a Windows Native Installer and EXE with JavaFX and NetBeans 7.2All the information is in the articles I have linked to at the end of the page. However, I hopefully have pulled together all the key facts in one place. In addition, I tried to document all the problems I ran into in the troubleshooting section. So what is the end result?  With everything installed, building an application in NetBeans creates an EXE installer, an MSI installer, and an EXE file to execute your application. • How to properly code in Unity? [on hold]

  I'm fairly new to Unity (yet I touched it and made a few proto with it) and I'd like to know how I'm supposed to work with it. I'm student in programming so I'm used to C/C++ with SDL/SFML, writing code and only using Input/Graphics/Network libs. I followed a few Unity guides and it was way more around drag & drop on scenes and a bit of scripting to activate it all, which disturbed me. So I fond a way to only use one GameObject and use a Singleton to launch code and display stuff (for 2d games at least). At the end of the day I make games not using "Instantiate" or such at all. Is it the right way ? Am I supposed to do this ? How much are your scenes populated (in a professional environment) ? When should I stop coding and start using the editor ?

• System76 Galago UltraPro keyboard?

  I'm not sure whether this is the correct place to ask this question, but here it is. I am currently using the previous version of the "Gazelle Professional" laptop from System76. The keyboard does get a bit getting used to, but now I really like it, and in fact find all other keyboards puny. I find many reviews of the new Galago UltraPro criticize its keyboard, saying it is very hard to press, but from the photos, it seems to use the same kind of keys, at least with the same markings, as the GazP. Will the keyboard be any "worse" than that of the GazP? Some reviews criticize the GazP keyboard too, and certain brands (Apple) do have shockingly soft chiclet keyboards, so I'm not so sure. I certainly don't want to shell out a lot of cash and end up with a keyboard I can't type properly on.

• Search and Replace in MVC

  What would be a good MVC/OOP/GRASP/SOLID structure for a search/replace functionality. Methods: search/searchNext/replace/replaceAll. I'm interested only in the PHP arhitecture and how a professional developer would implement this in it's OWN FRAMEWORK. What names would you use for the classes? What subfolders would you used in your MODEL folder? How would you connect the MODELS/CONTROLLER? This is just a arhitecture question to understand better the principles of good OOP in practice. My current implementation is very simplistic using a service model: /controller/SearchReplaceController.php /models/services/SearchReplaceService.php The problem with this is I know I'm breaking SRP in the service but I found this somehow acceptable. Also creating a service does not feel like the best solution for this.
