• Software development magazines [closed]

  Ive spent the last hour or so browsing the web for professional development magazines. I am mostly interested in the java platform, agile methods, "programming in general" (tutorials on languages or whatever, "hot new stuff" etc) and software craftmanship. My best finding yet was pragpub and maybe MSDN magazine. I am willing to pay and have a Zinio account if anyone knows a magazine about programming that is distributed by them. Ive already browsed a couple of related threads here on stackexchange. ACM and IEEE does not seem relevant, as Im not interested in research articles. Maybe conferences like OOPSLA as somebody mentioned in another thread. PS. I prefer if they are in pdf or readable on kindle or a tablet. DS. BR Sebastian

• Has anyone done CSDP certification?

  I was looking at some certifications that can potentially enhance my knowledge and market value as a Software Engineer. IEEE's Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) caught my attention. When I looked on the net for any user experiences with it I couldn't find anything substantial. Doesn't seem too popular. And I certainly havent heard of anyone in my organization or friends circle who have done it. I would like to know from community members if anyone has done this certification and their experiences with the same. Was the certification useful in terms of knowledge. Did it add weight to your resume (not deadweight!)?

• Is MVC now the only way to write PHP?

  Hey... its XMAS Eve and something is bugging me... yes, I have work on my mind even when I am on holiday. The vast amount of frameworks available for PHP now use MVC. Even ASP.net has its own MVC module. I can see the attraction of MVC, I really can and I use it frequently. The only downside that I can see is that you have to fire up the whole system to execute a page request. Depending on your task this can be a little wasteful. So the question. In a professional environment is this the only way to use PHP nowadays or are their other design methods which have alternative benefits?

• Web technologies on GUI apps

  I developed many GUI applications for the Windows platform during my early professional career, and saw several GUI frameworks come, have whole magazines devoted to them, and then fade away. MFC is iconic. Tasked with writing yet another GUI application, I starter researching cross-platform frameworks like Qt and WxWindows. I found the same steep learning curves I knew from before, and tooling doesn't help much in building a functional and elegant user interface because its clumsy and complicated. But people are building beautiful and functional UIs on the Web all the time (look at this site!). The standards, the libraries, and the tools are certainly there. My thought and my question: Why not write a GUI in which most of the UI is handled by an embedded browser? I already know that the Qt widgets support a large part of CSS and JavaScript, and programmers with good knowledge about web development are relatively easy to find, ..., so... Have you done something like that before? What's your experience/advise?

• When should I increment version number?

  I didn't learn programming at school and I do not work as a (professional) developer, hence a lot of basics are not quite clear to me. This question tries to clarify one of them. Now let's suppose that I have issues #1, #2 and #3 in my Issues Tracker that are set to be corrected/enhanced for version 1.0.0 and that the last (stable) version is 0.9.0. When should I increment to version 1.0.0 ? When a) just one of the listed above issues is closed or b) when all the issues related to version 1.0 are closed ? Which one is the right way to do it ? And by the right way, I mean what is currently used in the industry. Thanks.

• Where should i organize my matrices in a 3D Game engine?

  I'm working with a group of people from around the world to create a game engine(and hopefully a game with it) within the next upcoming years. My first task was writing a camera class for the engine to use in order to add cameras to the scene, position and follow points in the scene. The problem i have is with using matrices for transformations in the class, should i keep matrices separate to each class? such as have the model matrix in the model class, camera matrix in the camera class, or have all matrices placed in one class/chuck? I could see pros and cons for each method, but i wanted to hear some input form a more professional standpoint.

• Who does code coverage testing?

  Recently, I was given an opportunity to increase the code coverage in a project based on Java Swing, MySQL and other technologies. They told me to bring the code coverage to 100%, while it was only 45% at the time I joined. I am just starting, not a professional developer, right from the beginning I felt bad even though I write and understand computer programs well. (The developed code contains a lot of technical stuff like Generics and no documentation about the code is available.) Has anyone experienced the same situation before? Please tell who is the right person to do the job.

• Learning Programming, Suggestions for a roadmap

  Hi, Some background first- I am new to programming and have discovered it rather late in life; Like many hobbyists, my introduction to the subject has been through php/jquery (yes, i know the popular mood around here... they-are-not-real-programminng-languages ;-) ). I like to believe that I am reasonably competent at what I do in my other life and this developing addiction to coding has taken a very heavy toll on my professional prospects. This is the question: What programming languages next? (No plans to ditch php in the immediate future, that will involve rewriting much of my code) Any absolutely essential books I must read? Is it necessary to join a college/university course? Do I need to ditch my other profession to continue serious learning? My goals are: Develop a solid understanding of the science and art of programming. • Programming languages similar to ActionScript 3 / EcmaScript based

  I almost learned programming and OOP basic concepts with ActionScript 3 on the Flash Platform years ago. Some time has passed since then; I'm not a professional programmer, but I have written code in PHP, Fortran, and now Python. But, lately, I have missed ActionScript 3 OOP implementation, static typing and, I confess, curly braces. As Flash platform is slowly dying nowadays, I'm looking for an Open Sourced programming language similar to ActionScript 3. I've read about Java, which is the most similar one I found, but actually is the only one it doesn't interest me (I started to hate it after bad experiences with web applets). Any ideas? Edit: Added EcmaScript to the title and the tags; I think that is what I am looking for.

• after i typed in my username then it just quit the window and do nothing

  I have a vaio VGN-FJ270P/B laptop which originally installed a windows xp professional in it. Last week, i had enough about the speed of windows and bought a brand new fresh SSD [M5S 128GB] and 2 new RAMS [1GB x2]. And i used my desktop to install a LiveUSB and downloaded the latest ubuntu and installed it [Universal USB Installer + Ubuntu 12.04.1]. All seems find through partition and typing my username and password. just after i typed in my password, i pressed continue and then it pop-up the window about choosing the profile picture for my account and it immediately disappear and went doing nothing. What's happening with it? any help would be appreciate...! Thanks!! Bosco

• Moving from XNA/C# to DirectX/C++ quite confused

  I made some game with XNA/C# for Windows Phone and Windows 8, since XNA is dead and Visual studio doesn't support it (I have to target Windows Phone 7.1 to build with XNA), I want to start learning something more "consistent in time" and improve my skills. I'm a little confused about the possibilities, because C++/DirectX alone seems difficult, so I found some high-level classes to help: DirectX Toolkit Cocos2D My questions are: What will happen when they will "die" like XNA? Is C++'s approces more "professional" than C#/XNA and why? Is C++'s approces more "portable"? Is C++'s approces more resistant in terms of time? Is there any consideration about DirectX TK and Cocos2D in terms of performance? I ask that because I found that every Game software house in my country looks for skilled C++ programmers.

  Back in the early 90s, before I was a professional geek--much less a geek with a blog--I saw this old chop socky movie. I don't remember what it was called, or who was in it... all I remember is that, in one scene, the venerable sensei tells the hero: "You must develop your nunchaku technique." This became a bit fo a catchphrase amongst my high school mates. Well folks, I am developing my technuique. This blog has been renamed and the old posts removed--I could go into my reasons for this, but that would defeat the point of the exercise. Sorry if you liked 'em. It has been a good couple of years since I wrote anything here, so I doubt that I am putting out any regular readers. Will I be posting here more often, now that I've renamed and rethemed the place? • What ethical problems realistically arise in programming?

  When I co-oped during college, I had to fill out an evaluation of the co-op afterwards. One metric I always had to rate was how much the company required me to "Make ethical decisions related to your profession." This always seemed kinda silly- I mean, my first co-op was writing java apps to manage industrial radios. There wasn't much moral ambiguity going on. Anyway, I'm wonder what sort of ethical dilemmas one might actually encounter in software development. Edit: It should be noted that no ethically-trained software engineer would ever consent to write a DestroyBaghdad procedure. Basic professional ethics would require him to write a DestroyCity procedure, to which Baghdad could be given as a parameter. - Nathanial Borenstein

• Best free wireframe software for websites

  Working on a non-profit project and wondering if there's a standout wireframing tool for website design. I've taken photos of collaborative whiteboard drawings and now I want to put the results into something slightly more professional looking for review. For obvious reasons I'm not interested in anything that looks too much like the finished product or takes longer than it would for me to write the HTML. I checked out jumpchart, but that only seems to let you do content panes, not draw whole page layouts. Free or close to free is desirable - for instance jumpchart licensing seems very reasonable.

• Avoiding duplicate bug reports

  I use Linux and other open source software in my home. As I'm not a professional coder, I usually report bugs to developers as my skills are not enough to solve problems on my own. What kind of things you want me to check before I send a bug report? I mean, once I thought I found a bug in Gedit and I couldn't find similar bug in Bugzilla. But after I sent the report, some developer said that the bug is already in Bugzilla as the bug was in GTK+, not in Gedit. Sometimes it might be hard for an amateur to guess whether some previously known bug would solve the issue I found.

I am confident that our region has many professional developers as well as many graduating students whom who really benefit from a conference. I would like to ask the following questions: What steps or advice would one take if the task was given to set up a local developers conference? What would the costing look like? (excluding building/hosting of website(s)) How would one build interest and promote this? How would I approach, Local Companies & Universities to collaborate with them? • Are python's cryptographic modules good enough?

  I mean, say you were writing professional grade software that would involve sensitive client information. (Take this in the context of me being an amateur programmer.) Would you use hlib and hmac? Are they good enough to secure data? Or would you write something fancier by hand? Edit: In context of those libraries containing more or less the best hashing algorithms in the world, I guess it's silly to ask if you'd "write something fancier." What I'm really asking here is whether it's enough on its own.

• VS 11 vs VS 2012 [closed]

  I'm using Visual Studio 11 Beta at home, mainly for learning purposes. But now it's possible to download VS 2012 RC. Does it make sense to install it instead? Does it have many changes comparing with VS 11? I know that VS 11 doesn't work with Azure, was it fixed in VS 2012? EDIT: Actually I found this: What’s new in the RC since Beta, which describes changes in RC and if I decide to install it, I don't need to uninstall previous version: We’ve enabled upgrade from beta to RC, so if you’re using the same product edition (e.g. Professional, Ultimate, etc.), you do not need to uninstall the beta first. Simply run the Visual Studio 2012 RC installer, which will uninstall the right Beta bits and lay down the RC bits, all at once.

• What has been your experience with paid support from Canonical ?

  I am considering buying "Ubuntu Desktop Support" from Canonical for 2 reasons: I have a couple of issues that I would like professional help with. ( Specifically a recurring kernel panic, and a slow wireless connection. ) I would like to lend a helping hand toward supporting Ubuntu financially. However, I am a bit worried that once I transfer the money, they will end up just referring me to the bug tracker on Launchpad.   Last week, I discussed a new change in 5.4 where we have backported the RibbonBar from DotNetNuke Professional to the Community Edition. Well that is not the only big change that is occurring with this release. We are also backporting the Telerik Editor Provider! This is another huge win for the community.
