• Is it possible to run several virtual machines each with independent mouse+keyboard on a single PC?

  My goal is to instead of buying 4 separate basic PCs (plus the obvious peripherals), buy just one fast PC and the peripherals. I'm wondering if I can use a more powerful computer, say, one with core i7 and plenty of RAM, with 2 video cards (total of 4 monitor outputs) to run 4 or more virtual machines (WinXPs) so instead of having 4 individual machines, I'll be having just one. However, the catch is, is it possible to have a pair of mouse and keyboard + input/output audio for each of these virtual machines?

• what type of laptop do I need to run a amd64 or i386 VM?

  I was running an amd64 build of Ubuntu on a VM on a Windows host which was also amd64. Later I found I could not run the same amd64 iso on my laptop, which is intel without hyper-V. I was confused I thought chipset mattered, but maybe it does not. When buying a PC or Apple, is there anything to check about the chipset to make sure it can run different types of VMs? In my case, I was trying to run ubuntu on a Thinkpad T520. Per answer below, I did need to enable some bios settings. I'm still having some issues. Running ubuntu on virtual box, when I try to use ubuntu-12.10-server-amd64.iso for the CD/DVD device to start a new VM, virtualbox complains "Failed to open the CD/DVD image . Could not get the storage format of the medium (VERR_NOT_SUPPORTED). When I try to use ubuntu-12.10-server-i386.iso the ISO is accepted, but then the VM complains "FATAL: No bootable medium found! System halted." I had been using an amd64 iso on my home PC which is amd64 and it works fine, which is why I suspected CPU mismatch was the problem at first. But it seems like I'm having issues, and maybe this superuser thread can be used to verify the cpu is irrelevant in this case.

  Hi everyone, at the moment i have a dual monitor setup on my main PCIe gfx card. I know that on windows it is almost impossible to have a second card (eg no thrills PCI card) running without having an SLI motherboard because of a driver issue. Well this was my conclusion after many weeks of research. I was thinking...is it possible to use a VM in order to utilize the secondary card as the default video output to feed another monitor? let me know if you want me to clarify Thanks :)

• Using Hamachi VPN to connect to Linux VM at home

  I have a CentOS 5.10 Linux box at home running on VMWare, with Windows 2008 as the host. I have set up a Hamachi VPN so that I can connect to the Host server from work, I attempted to add a second VNIC to the VM and bridged it to the hamachi Network Interface. I spun up the VM and checked eth1 with ifconfig and its throwing me a ipv6 address not a ipv4. I want to hook this VM up so that I can run a ssh command from work to the VM. MY network at home is all on Local 198.168.. hence the need to make a VPN network like Hamachi. I cannot seem to find anything that tells me or helps me with tunneling my Linux VM via Hamachi. Any help would be fantastic!

• Why can't a PC with 2 network cards be accessed by hostname?

  I set up PC with 2 network cards, connected to the same LAN. I can connect to this PC (e.g. by remote desktop) only via ip-addresses. Accessing by hostname does not work. Why is this the case? UPDATE: Full environment 1. PC with 2 hardware network adapters. 2. On this PC installed VMWare Workstation. Created 3 VM's, networked by "bridged" network setting in VMWare. 3. In LAN all ip-addresses given from DHCP. 4. Win2k8 on all hosts (both physical and vitrual). As result: 1. PC has 2 ip-address (e.g. 192.168.1.71 and 192.168.1.72). PC available in LAN by ip-addreses, but not avail by hostname. 2. VM's has own ip-addr on each (e.g. 192.168.1.73, *74, *75 etc). They are available from LAN by their ip's, BUT not by their hostnames. How can I access to PC and to VM's by hostname?

• Vmware Fusion 5 Port Forwarding

  I have a service (a node.js express app) running on port 3000 in a CentOS 6.3 guest that I would like to access in a web browser on my Mac Mountain Lion host using VMware Fusion 5 Professional. I am having trouble finding any information about how to do this. I believe I would like to forward the port but I cannot find any information about this using either the GUI or by modifying configuration files. In earlier versions it looks like you might have modified a file called nat.conf but that does not seem to apply to Fusion 5. Has anyone successfully done this? Thank you.

• Basic connectivity issues between Win 7 and XP mixed wired/wireless network. [Solved]

  Setup: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate desktop hard wired to Asus WL500gp router (WL500gpv2-1.9.2.7-d-r1445 firmware) Several Bridged VirtualBox VM's running XP, 7, ubuntu server 10.04, Mint 9 and SuSE 11.2 Win XP Pro SP3 notebook with D-Link Airplus wireless network card. No firewall or other security software currently running on either platform (at least for the duration of the test) Situation: Router is acting DHCP server Clients are receiving correct addresses and additional parameters Internet connectivity is available from all clients Windows 7 sharing is set to Network type = work (not home group) NetBT is disabled on all clients using smb over TCP What I can do: I can ping the router and internet addresses from the wireless XP notebook I can ping the Win 7 desktop and any VM from the XP wireless notebook I can ping all devices from the router All VM's and 7 can ping each other and the router as well as Internet addresses What I can't do: I cannot ping the XP wireless notebook from either the Win 7 desktop or the VM's; it always returns a destination host unreachable error. Tracert resolves the name or the XP notebook but also returns a destination host unreachable. From the above it would seem that something is blocking connectivity in a single direction (from the Win 7 box to the Win XP notebook) only but the router can ping the XP notebook. Some fresh input would be most welcome, as this is beginning to drive me batty. Thanks

• how do I 'hard refresh' a shared directory?

  VMWare player 4.0.1 build-528992 I added a file to a shared directory in Windows 7. When I ls -l that directory in Ubuntu 11 it looks like: (2nd line) ls: cannot access item_spec.rb: No such file or directory -rwxrwxrwx 1 root root 300 2012-01-11 12:05 user_spec.rb -????????? ? ? ? ? ? item_spec.rb How can I get the folder to "refresh"? I need to use this file in Ubuntu. I think it will be present if I restart the VM, but that seems excessive. This looks like a bug. • Virtualbox crashes quite often in Windows 8

  I just installed Windows 8 on my computer. I got the ISO and the product key from my university so the software itself is sound. I use alot of virtual box. And ever since I moved to Windows 8, I have noticed that virtual box crashes more often. In particular, it is very very bad at opening multiple guests. My CPU usage will be at like 20% and I only have 3 guests open and my entire computer just freezes. Cursor and all. In Windows 7, I was able to open like 6 (not that I ever needed to) and really push my CPU. I havent experience any other issues with Windows 8 yet. Has anyone encountered this? Thanks!

  We've recently been experiencing seemingly random SVN checkout failures on our Hudson build system. Google search has failed me; I'm hoping the super user community can help me out :-) We are occasionally receiving the following SVN error when our Hudson build jobs checkout source via the Hudson Subversion plug-in (which uses svn kit): ERROR: Failed to check out http://server/svnroot/trunk org.tmatesoft.svn.core.SVNException: svn: Processing REPORT request response failed: XML document structures must start and end within the same entity. (/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default) svn: REPORT request failed on '/svnroot/!svn/vcc/default' This issue seems to only occur when checking out from our Virtual Machines (Windows XP, Fedora 9, Fedora 12) using Hudson's SVN Plug-in. Systems that use the traditional SVN client seem to work. SVN Server version: 1.6.6 Hudson version: 1.377 Hudson SVN Plugin Version: 1.17 Has anyone dealt with this issue, or have any suggestions? • Virtual PC on Windows 7 doesn't have adjustment for video card size?

  The current VirtualBox has a place where the video card size can be set by the user. It seems that Win 7's Virtual PC doesn't have one? Will it auto adjust -- but what if the screen size is 800 x 600 and the user resize it to 1600 x 1200, then the original video size may not be enough and will that cause any issue? I do sometimes see blinking random pixel region showing on the VPC's screen... maybe it is cause by not enough video RAM size?

• Any consumer routers with Outgoing VPN support?

  When I'm working at home, I need to be able to connect to three different outgoing VPNs, two of which happen to use the same internal IP addressing schemes (192.168.0.*). I also need a static address for my VirtualBox VM so I can connect to my testing web server. Are there any routers which will allow me to connect to multiple outgoing VPNs and assign different internal IP addresses through NAT? Is such a thing even possible, or are there alternate solutions available? Thanks!

  I'm trying to passthrough my nv video card to my domU, but I could not bind my video card to the pciback driver I only have one video card with the pci number 0000:03:00.0, so I used the following command echo -n "0000:03:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/nouveau/bind to unbind the nouveau driver from my video card. The screen went black because I have forcefully removed the video driver, therefore I ssh'd into the computer to run further commands I ran: echo -n "0000:03:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/pciback/bind to try to bind it to my pciback driver, but I got: bash: echo: write error: No such device I found out that this was the message shown when trying to bind a PCI device which is already bound. Therefore, I think that something was still using my video card Can anyone help me out? Thanks a lot!

• Win7 XP mode install fails with cryptic error

  Trying to install XPmode on Win7 Professional 64-bit SP1, but getting an error. I downloaded XPMode, Virtual PC and the update as specified here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx. When I open XP mode for the first time it goes into the setup ("Setting up Windows XP Mode for first use..."; pick your VM password, etc.), then it runs through the progress bar until almost the end (99%?). At that point I get the error: Could not complete Setup. Please try again. Whats going on here? I've uninstalled Virtual PC and xpmode, and reinstalled in several different orders, no luck. Is there some log file that will tell me whats happening? Theres nothing showing up in the Event log that I can find. How can I fix this?

• virtual machines: optimal host os to run Windows XP guest os?

  My department doesn't have the budget to upgrade my ailing Dell D620 laptop. However, I do have the option to buy my own personal computer, then use my company-issued ISO image to run Windows XP as my guest os using virtualbox or vmware. Therefore, last month, I bought an Acer AX3910-U3012 desktop that had Windows 7 as the host os (and 8G RAM). In short, I was disappointed with the performance while trying to run WinXP as the guest os. (It didn't perform much better than my laptop.) Just wondering what the optimal host os would be for running Windows XP as the guest os? (No, I can't use my company-issued ISO image to build the os for my personal computer.) FWIW, I'm willing to spend up to $2k if it's REALLY worth it, but would prefer to spend no more than $1k. Also, in an effort to cut costs, I'd prefer buy a desktop instead of a laptop. • VirtualBox with Ubuntu Server guest can't ping outside

  Here's my situation: an Ubuntu 12.04 Host running VirtualBox; two guest VMs running Ubuntu Server 12.04 home network, so my Host pc has a wireless connection to the router of my ISP. My problem is in one of the virtual machines: it has 3 NICs, one in NAT mode and the others in Host Only mode. My purpose is to use eth0 (NAT) for Internet access and eth1, eth2 (Host Only) for management of internal virtual network (eth1 uses a VBoxNet with this IP 192.168.69.254). Whenever I try to $ping 8.8.8.8 I get Destination Host Unreachable. While if I $ping 192.168.69.10, that is the IP of the other VM, it works.   My main OS (Windows 7 or 8) is runned from SSD. I'd want to run Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 using VMWare workstation. I've heard that VMWare doesn't support TRIM and other things to optimize SSD usage. So SSD will quickly degrade if VM will be runned from SSD. Will it be better to put guest OS's files (.vmdk and the rest) to external HDD (connected through USB 2 or 3) instead of SSD? What advantages and disadvantages it will give? What if VM will be put to internal HDD? At what drive type performance of VM will be better?

My question is, will an Ubuntu host/Windows guest or a Windows host/Ubuntu guest be faster? I'm somewhat worried about Windows getting a cluttered registry and slow, but on the otherhand, a Windows host would have direct access to hardware (Unless I'm just unaware of how to grant hardware access to a guest). Does the choice of software (VMware or VirtualBox) effect the choice?

• VMware guest pauses when the host is idle - how do I keep it running?

  I'm running VMWare Worstation 7 with Windows 7 x64 as guest, Windows XP x64 as host. Inside the guest I run a long-running console application, which prints out progress messages with timestamps on them. Sometimes I leave it running for several hours while I lock the host OS and don't touch the computer at all. When I come back I find that some time after I left it seems to have paused and automatically resumed: the console app hasn't made much progress and there's a large time gap in its progress messages. There's nothing relevant in the host event log, but in the guest Application event log I can see these messages around the time I left: A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (VMware Tools Service) The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application And later, around the time I returned, this shows up in the System log: The system time has changed to ?2012?-?01?-?12T06:36:46.921000000Z from ?2012?-?01?-?12T03:18:19.953079000Z. That seems to support my theory that it's VMware doing something and not Windows itself. The question is: how do I stop it doing that? I want my application to continue running. By the way, the power options are set to never sleep in both guest and host.

• vmware host stuck after adding a virtual drive to client

  I use ESXi 5.0 I created a virtual (400GB) drive (located on an iSCSI mapped drive), and tried to add it to a specific client on the host. The task has stopped at 11%. After over an hour, it seems that everything is pretty stuck. Looking at the datastore - it says that 400GB are allocated, but I don't see the new drive with the client. How can I check if the process is still working? or should I restart the host and pray for good?

  I can't for the life of me figure this out. I recently had TWC installed in my house, and wanted to disable the NAT and router functions of it. I have a Time Capsule hooked up to it from LAN1 (on the Ubee) to the WAN port on the TC. The problems started occurring here. I figured the settings would be these: Ubee Configuration mode: Bridge DHCP: Off TC IPv4: 192.168.100.2 Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 Router Address: 192.168.100.1 DNS Servers: 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4 Router Mode: DHCP and NAT But using those settings, my TC says "Double NAT", so I have to change it all around to the default settings of the Ubee using NAT. This leads me to believe bridge mode doesn't actually turn off NAT...

• VirtualBox OSE: Install Guest OS On Headless Host Via VNC?

  I've remotely installed VirtualBox OSE on my Gentoo box at home. I have everything set up and ready for the OS. However all the documentation I've read seems to say that you can only use the PUEL version in order to get remote access during installs - does anyone know if it's possible to do similar with the OSE but using VNC? Links to documentation or tutorials would be welcome, apparently my Google-Fu is failing me, if it's out there. Thanks.
