• How do you update without cutting off users?

  I searched around and I was surprised that I couldn't find an answer to this question. My assumption is that you have multiple servers. Normally they both will be doing their specific take (for the rest of this I will assume a simple website). Now lets say server A & B need updates. Do you update server A while server B keeps pushing out the webpage and then when server A is okay you update server B? This seems like it would work in small scale but seems horrible in large scale due to the fact that you'd need twice the power that you normally have. When dealing with a large number of servers do you update small sections at a time? I thought the problem with this would be if server A can't work alongside server B C D E or F any-longer that's not that bad. But when you start updating you slowly lose this small percentage. What is the proper way to deal with updates like this?

Each table should fit on one page, but both Firefox and Safari want to break them over multiple pages and put more than one on a page. Is there any way to force it to not break the tables across pages? I can use any Mac program to print. Thanks.

• Windows7: Gaining administrator rights in CLI without being prompted for password

  Hello, I am trying to write a script which includes disk defragmentation as one of its steps. defrag needs administrative rights to work. I tried to use runas /user:Administrator, but it always asked me for password (even though there isn't one set). The script needs to run unattended for a long time, and it needs to be started from standard user account (it is actually being run by cygwin), so I'd like to get rid of that prompt. • Running ubuntu 10.04 without a laptop's primary display

  I have an IBM thinkpad(R50e) whose display is broken. I would still like to use the laptop by connecting it to an external monitor and keyboard/mouse. This is what I did: Removed the hard disk from the broken IBM Put the hard disk in the working IBM and installed 10.04 on it. It booted fine and I installed many packages and stuff. I put the hard disk back into the broken display IBM thinking I could use it by connecting it to an external monitor that I own. Well, it turns out that while booting, the display shows up but because the display shifts from the VGA display to the primary display mid-boot, the laptop does not boot. Is there a way in which I can force the laptop to not use its primary display while booting. I looked at Randr and also grub.conf settings but nothing seemed to work. Please help!

• Centrally manage Windows 7 computers without Active Directory

  I manage three Windows PCs at home using the principle of least privilege. This means that practically every other day when a new version of Java is released, I have to manually install the update using my administrative credentials on each machine. This is starting to become more work than I had expected. I would love to set up an active directory domain at home, but Microsoft has discontinued Windows home server; its replacement, Windows server 2012 essentials is much more expensive (about $500). Are there any free (preferably as in speech) that would allow me to centrally manage the software installed on each machine in a manner similar to that of active directory? I'd also like to find a way to centrally manage security settings, but I doubt there's an equivalent of group policy. Samba 4 would be an ideal solution, but according to its own developers, it is not yet stable enough for production use.

  I'm building a Bash script for some tasks. One of those tasks is create a MySQL DB from within the same bash script. What I'm doing right now is creating two vars: one for store user name and the other for store password. This is the relevant part of my script: MYSQL_USER=root MYSQL_PASS=mypass_goes_here touch /tmp/$PROY.sql && echo "CREATE DATABASE $DB_NAME;" > /tmp/script.sql mysql --user=$MYSQL_USER --password="$MYSQL_PASS" < /tmp/script.sql rm -rf /tmp/script.sql But always get a error saying access denied for user root with NO PASSWORD, what I'm doing wrong?   I work in a small office with about 35 people and we are all on a intranet. This network is not connected to the internet. Is it possible to set up an email server, with which we could send emails to each other? (We don't need to send emails outside our network.) I cannot use a messenger service like Openfire, since the messages could be asynchronous, and we'd like to get those emails in a email client like Thunderbird. Another obstacle we have is that we do not have a domain name. Any ideas on which free (as in beer) software could be used? We have both Windows and Linux machines.

  My university uses Microsoft Outlook Web Access (OWA) e-mail. Soon they will close my e-mail account as my course has ended, but I really do not want to lose the archive of emails and attachments. I've read a backup to something called a .pst can be made if one has access to Microsoft Outlook but I do not. Is there any other way I could back these up? (preferably on Ubuntu 12.04 but I also have access to Win 7 if need be). One idea I played with is using davmail to allow access via Thunderbird and performing some kind of backup with that. However, I cannot seem to get past Authentication failed: invalid user or password, retry with domain\user.

• How to pull SNMP information from Windows commandline without installing software

  I would like to be able to quickly pull SNMP information via commandline such as device uptime. I noticed Net-SNMP's snmpget.exe can do this; but it looks like I need to install Net-SNMP first before I can use that executable. Isn't there any way to make this executable portable? When I simply copy it to another machine and try to execute it, it complains that netsnmp.dll is missing. If I copy that file to the same folder, it still says the file is missing. I even tried to regsvr32 that dll, but I was unsuccessful. Maybe there's a better way to get simple SNMP information from the Windows command line using royalty free/non-commercial software? • Mac OS X 10.6 executable not found without full path

  I just installed Apache via MacPorts. It seems that my Mac was absolutely confused about which version of the Apache executables to run. After moving the Apache executables that ship with the Mac to a directory that is not listed in the PATH variable, trying to run the httpd built by MacPorts fails even though the correct directory (/opt/local/apache2/bin) is listed in the PATH variable. If I navigate to the directory /opt/local/apache2/bin and type the command httpd I still get the error message -bash: httpd: command not found If I type the command with the full path /opt/local/apache2/bin/httpd it works fine. I've run the command alias to see if something was clashing but the only thing listed is: alias wget='curl -O' How do I find what is intercepting the command and preventing the executable being found in the directory, even when I'm inside the same directory?   Goal: automatically adjusting speed (bpm) of a given set of MP3 files in order to have a collection of music optimized to be heard when I am running. (I realized that I prefer to run with about 168 bpm in my ears). Of course, I could have some software to detect BPM and then calculate and stretch/squeeze each song using Audacity or a similar tool, however, I'd prefer a solution which requires less manual operation.

  Ordered an Adaptec 1420SA RAID card for my Debian Squeeze media server but didn't check to see if it was compatible, turns out it's not because it uses something called hostRAID which requires special drivers that aren't available for Debian. Could I still use the card as an ordinary controller and just use OS software RAID?? I'm not looking for speed, just need to mirror some drives that will be used for storage, the OS will reside on a disk connected to the server's onboard controller so the system won't be booting from any drives on the Adaptec controller.

• How to close buffer without closing the window?

  I usually open a few windows and keep some buffers open. Since my MO in buffer exploring is to use quick shortcuts to :bn and :bp, I want to close unneeded buffers from distracting my buffer surfing. But the pain is, issuing :bd and :bw results in closing the window as well, in case I have multiple ones open. How do I close (delete) a buffer and leave the windows intact? Solution inspired by @peth's answer :command! BW :bn|:bd# It is simple. Doesn't work well with only one buffer open (I get different behaviour depending on the way I open the files) but it isn't a big issue. :)

  Say that python package A requires B, C and D; is there a way to list A → B C D without loading them ? Requires in the metadata (yolk -M A) are often incomplete, grr. One can download A.tar / A.egg, then look through A/setup.py, but some of those are pretty gory. (I'd have thought that getting at least first-level dependencies could be mechanized; even a 98 % solution would be better than avalanching downloads.)   I have prepared a PowerShell script to export a list of system users in CSV format. The script can output the users list with Export-csv with single header row (the header row at top). However my requirement is to repeat the header row twice in my file. It is easy to achieve in PowerShell 3.0 with "Append" (e.g. $header | out-file $filepath -Append) Our server envirnoment is running PowerShell 1.0. Hence I cannot do it. Is there any workaround? I cannot manually add it myself. Thank you.

• Repair corrupt hard disk on Mac without install CD

  The hard disk of my late 2009 MacBook Pro appears to have become corrupted. I am traveling and do not have my install CD (and won't for several weeks, nor will I be anywhere near an Apple store). The hard disk is not the original, which failed in June 2011. It's some Hitachi replacement installed by IT. History: I was typing an email this afternoon, my computer suddenly started making soft clicking sounds and then froze. I was not moving around. I rebooted, which took a while. I heard more clicking sounds and the computer froze at least once again. It's now kind of working, with mdworker sucking up one CPU. There are no awkward hard drive sounds when I run Chrome or play music. However, when I launched Stickies, I found no trace of my saved Stickies. I ran a live disk verification from within Disk Utility, and it reported Problem: As reported, I don't have access to an installation disc and am nowhere near an area where I can get one for at least two weeks. I have the option of asking someone to go to some trouble and expense to get one for me, but I'm not sure it's worth it: I've read that I can use fsck from single-user mode to repair the disk. Should I just try this? Is it risky? I'm concerned that the clicky sound portends imminent (mechanical) hard drive failure, so it's not worth doing a silly repair. This hard disk is backed up, but I definitely won't be able to access the backup while traveling. I'd like to maximize the probability that I can keep using my computer (and all its current files) while traveling. Update I bit the bullet and ran fsck -fy from single-user mode. It only needed one pass (modification) to reach the "okay" stage. However, rebooting took nearly 5 min and involved several rounds of scratchy sounds and a few bad clicks. I'm now back to kind of using my computer (the same files are missing as before). When I ran live disk verification from Disk Utility this time, however, it reported that the volume appears to be OK. Am I right to infer from the scratchy sounds, however, that my hard drive is still rapidly on its way out? Is there anything else I can do to increase its functionality over the next few weeks?

In IE7 and IE8 however, the results are: 1 2 3 5 6 4 7 [Note: I don't want to float anything to the right because I want the fields on my form to left-align correctly, without a giant space in-between the floated fields to account for the parent container's width.] Apparently I need a full clear, and can probably add an empty list-item element to the list to force clearing, but that seems like a dumb solution and sort of defeats the purpose. Any ideas? I've spent a few hours reading and trying different options without success.

  We just upgraded our company intranet from an IIS based, ASP (poorly written) server/code base to a Windows Server 2008 r2 (Apache/MySQL/PHP) server. The old server allowed users to login to intranet.xxx.org using there AD user/pass which then lead them to the company Intranet from basically anywhere they had Internet access. We want to mimic that functionality (or change it to something more secure) with the new setup. This was seemingly setup for off-site employees running on a state network. The state network does not allow VPN, therefor, we needed a way to allow those employees access to the Intranet. So, how do we go about allowing users to login from the outside world and gain access to our Intranet?

  My team is building out an Active Directory environment in a small grad school with support for general computer labs, and staff/faculty machine and account management. We have a team of student consultants that are hired to do general help desk work. As of now we have a local admin account on every machine. It has the same password and all of us know it. I know it's not best practice and I want to avoid this with the new setup. We want to have local admin accounts in case there are network issues that prevent AD authentication, but we do not want this account to be generic with a shared password. Is there a way we can get each machine to cache the necessary information to authenticate a group of local admins so that if AD is somehow inaccessible, student consultants can still login with their AD admin accounts?
