  • Is Sql Azure useful without windows azure?

    I am currently doing some research to get some preliminary IT cost projections for a project, and I was looking at Azure. Since this is a startup, I do not want to deal with the IT operations myself and instead am looking at having it all professionally hosted. I am looking at azure due to the SLA assurances, already in place disaster recovery operations, and the reliability. I'm playing with some numbers, and I am wondering if hosting my database on Sql Azure is an option, while hosting the actual webpage on another host until I need the frontend scalability of Azure. Is this actually feasible or will the latency in requests between the web host and azure be too much and I would be better off hosting both on the same service?

  • Zipping folder with absolute path without keeping tree of folders

    I am attempting to use the zip -r command to zip a folder which includes two files. I need to pass the absolute path of the folder with two files (/path/to/my/files/), which is causing all of the folders to be zipped with it, where as I only need the last folder (files/) and its contents to be zipped, so that when the file is unzipped, there is only one folder and the two files within it. How can I modify the command to be able to pass the absolute paths in the arguments while keeping only the last folder?

  • Google Drive terminates without error on startup

    I've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. I'm still using the same OS, hardware, and basic software load (antivirus, firewall, etc.) that I have for years during which I had not previously had problems with Drive. OS: Windows 7 Ultimate x64 Google Drive Version: 1.12.5329.1887 Now, whenever I try to run Google Drive, it just spawns two instances of the executable which die shortly after. No error messages are posted to the desktop, and nothing indicating any problem is written to the Event Log. After some research, I've yet to find anyone having the same problem who's found an answer. I did find out how to run Google Drive in diagnostic mode, using the --vv parameter at the command line.     Is there an easy way to install packages with a large dependency tree, provided that you don't have superuser access? For instance, say I wanted to install firefox. Firefox has a ton of dependencies, each of which have their own dependencies, etc. Installing these the "./configure; make; make install" way would take forever. Is there an option I can give apt-get to make it install in a personal directory? Or is there a way to hack it to do all the heavy lifting for me?

    I'd like to print a plot with y-error-bars and just plain points. My current Octave script looks like this: errorbar(x_list, y_list, Delta_y_list, "~.x"); title("physikalisches Pendel"); xlabel("a^2 [m^2]"); ylabel("aT^2 [ms^2]"); print -dpdf plot.pdf The plot I get has a line, although I specified the .x style option: How can I get rid of that line? And the ylabel is in the scale as well, is there some way to fix that?

  • SFTP access without hassle

    I'm trying to provide access to a local folder for someone over the internet. After googling around a bit, I've come to the conclusion that SFTP is the safest thing to expose through the firewall to the chaotic and evil world of the Internet. I'm planning to use the openssh-server to this end. Even though I trust that openssh will stop a random attacker, I'm not so sure about the security of my computer once someone is connected through ssh. In particular, even if I don't give that person's user account any privileges whatsoever, he might just be able to "su" to, say, "nobody". And since I was never worried about such things before, I might have given some moderate privileges to nobody at some point (not sudo rights surely!). I would of course value your comments about giving privileges to nobody in the first place, but that's not the point, really. My aim is to give SFTP access to someone in such a sandboxed state that I shouldn't need to worry about such things (at least not more so than I should have done before). Is this really possible? Am I speaking nonsense or worried in vain?

  • Enable 8th bit as Meta in zsh without a warning

    In my quest to configure my shell to work exactly how I want it with respect to the alt/meta key I am having some trouble. Recently I added "bindkey -m" to my .zshrc and now whenever I start a zsh shell (ie open a terminal window) I get this error "warning: `bindkey -m' disables multibyte support". Now since I don't care much about multibyte support atm, is there a way I can disable just this warning? Even better would be a way to use 8th-bit meta as well as multibyte. Also note that this happens on a clean zsh install on 4.3.9 and 4.3.10 My reasoning for wanting bindkey -m vim: alt mappings (my own personal commands/mappings) zsh: alt mappings (such as Alt-. to recall the last argument of the previous command) emacs: alt mappings (lots of built-ins) So, is there any way to disable this warning or otherwise accomplish what I'm trying to do?

Since the guide mentioned above recommends placing the backup directory in a separate partition I want to repartition the /dev/sdc1 external hard disk but retain existing data in a separate partition. E.g. split /dev/sdc1 into two partitions: (i) one to be used exclusively for the rsync-based backup and (ii) the other for the existing miscellaneous data. How should I go about partitioning with minimal risk to my existing data and what kind of filesystem do you recommend? I would prefer a console-based guide but unfortunately all the material I found on the web is oriented towards partitioning the main (bootable) disk and not an external fuseblk filesystem used only for passive data.

  • Want shortcut to OpenVPN GUI connect in Windows 7 (without going through the system tray)

    I am running OpenVPN with OpenVPN GUI under Windows 7 x64. Currently, to connect I need to right-click the OpenVPN icon in the system tray and select "connect", which brings up the password prompt. What I want: some sort of a batch file or a shortcut that can be invoked to initiate OpenVPN connection. Motivation: I prefer running my system keyboard driven; I usually hide my taskbar and don't like needlessly fishing in the system tray. Currently, OpenVPN is the only program that forces me to interact with the taskbar. Surely there is an alternative approach, possibly invoking some command line trickery and/or autohotkey, but so far I haven't been able to find it.

    Hello, For a middleware system with internet (which works inside a set-top box) I want to develop a primitive Facebook interface where users can type their user-names and password, showing their latest notification, messages and other casual stuff on the TV screen by using the recent Facebook Graph API. This middleware program uses Java ME to run programs (such as this simple facebook app) and it can connect to internet however it doesn't have a real web browser. Without browser it can connect to any url to retrieve the JSON response however I am not sure how to achieve authentication without a real browser. Under this circumstances, is it possible Facebook authentication? If you think so, what approach would you suggest ? Thanks

  • How to charge an iPhone on a Windows PC without Installing iTunes

    I want to be able to charge my iPhone on my work computer, which is running Windows Server 2008 SP1 64-Bit. When I plug the iPhone in with the USB cable, it will not charge. Windows attempts to locate a driver for the device but only comes up with a generic Camera device and even if I allow that to be installed, the iPhone still does not charge. I have checked the computer's BIOS settings and did not find anything relating to power on the USB devices. I also tried this on ports at the back of the computer in addition to those on the front. The PC is a Dell Optiplex 780. As far as I can tell USB devices do not charge unless Windows has installed an appropriate driver. Since it is a work computer I do not want to install iTunes which does include a driver. I have a workaround that I will post as an answer for reference.

  • Access or import an Outlook 2003 .pst file without Outlook

    I have a 450 meg .pst file (MS Outlook 2003 backup file) saved from a PC before it crashed. I would like to break it up into its components i.e. Save attachments to folders on my PC Paste text-emails into a word processor, etc. But I don't want to buy MS Office Professional 2003 or later solely for importing the .pst into MS Outlook 2003+. Outlook Express cannot import .pst files, only Outlook “proper” can. Is there some free email client out there, e.g. Thunderbird, that can import .pst files? Or is there some other way to access the 450meg file?

    Can any body help me, in this regard. I just want to remove all the images in my word document. I have about 365 pages document, in which there are images in almost all pages. I can not delete one by one. I can save it in .txt format but I will lose the formatting of the data. Is there any other way to get this. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. How do I avoid duplicating it (i.e. check whether it is already contained in the PATH "string").   • Can varnish cache files without specific extension or residing in specific directory

    I have a varnish installation to cache (MANY) images that my service serves. It is about 200 images of around 4k per second and varnish happily serves them according to the following rule: if (req.request == "GET" && req.url ~ "\.(css|gif|jpg|jpeg|bmp|png|ico|img|tga|wmf)$") { remove req.http.cookie; return(lookup); } Now, the thing is that I recently added another service on the same server that creates thumbnails to serve but it does not add a specific extension. The files are of the following filename pattern: http://www.example.com/thumbnails/date-of-thumbnail/xxxxxxxxx.xx where xx are numbers, so xxxxxxxxx.xx could be 6482364283.73 (two numbers at the end) (actually this is the timestamp so I can keep extra info in the filename) That has the side effect that varnish does not cache them and I see them constantly being served by apache itself. Even though I can change the format from now on to create thumbs ending in .jpg, is there a way to change the vcl file of my varnish daemon to either cache everything under a directory (the thumbnails directory) or everything with two numbers at its extension?     I'm trying to do this: make a symlink of a whole directory "C:/Master", in different folders like "C:\Projects\Alpha\", "C:\Projects\Beta\" an so on. "Master" directory usually changes in files and data. I work on the "Projects/*", where every project folder uses the "Master" files, but every one has new files in them. Let's say, I point to the car engine in every project folder, and inside them I add different kind of wheels. The problem I'm having, as a Windows 8 user, is that symlinks (junction) acts as a window to "Master" - I'm not allowed to add any file inside. I looking a way to reference the entire "Master" directory, and add new files - not edit any of the "Master" ones. It's as described here, but on Windows.

    Is there a way to forcibly terminate an SSH session in PuTTY, short of closing the PuTTY window? For example, in OpenSSH, I can use the ~. escape sequence to kill the connection. This is useful when the SSH session stops responding for some reason, but I don't want to lose any of my current session-specific settings. In that case, I'd like to kill the session and then use Restart Session to reconnect.

    I have a Debian testing box with Xfce (no Gnome, no Nautilus). It has all gvfs-related stuff installed, including all backends and fuse interface. But any attempts to gvfs-mount anything (like sftp://... or smb://...) fail with error opening file: Operation not supported, and gigolo shows only 'unix device (file)' in the list of supported protocols. My ~/.gvfs has rwx permissions, and I'm a member of fuse group; other fuse-related stuff works for me. What do I do? Where to look?

  • Browser considering www domain and without www domain different

    I've bought a domain name and hosted it. My browser is storing separate passwords for mydomain.com and www.mydomain.com, and also caching them separately. I want these two to be considered the same website. The zone records of mydomain.com are: "A" record: "@" points to the IP address of my hosting CNAME: www points to "@" As CNAME signifies alias, shouldn't browser understand (like search engines do) that the two URLs refer to the same website? Is it browser's fault? Please tell how to correct the problem? Do I need to enter some other record for www instead of CNAME?

    Glassfish v3 is launched as follows: ./bin/asadmin start-domain <domain-name> This script eventually runs: exec "$JAVA" -jar "$AS_INSTALL_LIB/admin-cli.jar" "$@" admin-cli.jar eventually launches another process, effectively putting itself into the background. I would like to launch glassfish without putting itself in the background for the purpose of monitoring with daemontools (ie: svc). Is this possible? The documentation talks about using inittab here which seems like it would also require a way to launch it without forking or backgrounding so some other process (eg: inittab, evc, etc.) can watch the process id and restart it if it crashes. However, in this inittab example, is it using the same backgrounding cmd line, so I don't know how inittab can possibly respawn the process when it doesn't know what process id to watch. Am I missing something?
