How to advance in my JavaScript skills? [closed]

I am using javascript for about two years now, and I feel that I can do really basic stuff. I can make some basic algorithms and mostly use jQuery for interactive elements on webpages, and as I need to do more advanced things I get the feeling that my knowledge is lacking. In most cases I find a code, it takes me quite some time to understand it, but I don't understand why it is written as it is. I have no background in computer science, so I'm not sure weather I should go to the basics, or get some advanced javascript book/course. How can I make that jump from using JS for scripting to become a real programmer?

How to mimic the same fixed-size horizon as in this racing game?

I am trying to replicate the same horizon (buildings and sky) as in the image below: As you can see, the player has advanced in a straight line, yet the horizon has still the same size: This is my attempt using 3D, while it's okay when the player is on the start line: It's not so great when the player advanced as much as in the image no. 2: This is an overview of where the horizon buildings and sky are located: Obviously this won't achieve such effect when one is close to it, so I've tried to scale up the horizon on all axes but the problem is that the buildings are too small depending where you look at them from. How can one mimic such rendering ?

ASP.NET MVC - How to save some data between requests ?

Hi, I'm trying to solve the problem: when a user is being logged into a WebSite (via user control .ascx stored on the Master Page), it's name is being stored in a Page.User.Identity.Name property. OK, but how to retrieve that user name in the controller ? Is it possible without registering System.Security.Principal namespace in the controller ? In the other words - the controller must know whose user wants to do some action (e.g. change account data). I could store it's name in the Html.Hidden control on each View but I don't want to have a mess in my Views

cannot access localhost using ip

I have done a small web development project using eclipse. It runs well when I try running it on browser with url localhost:8080/myproject/home.html. But if I want to access it on another machine (laptop, mobile, etc. using the same wifi) it is not possible; it is not able to connect. After Googling for a while found out that I have to use the IP address instead of 'localhost'. So I tried 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html, but still does not work. In fact i am unable to open that url on the same machine (where localhost:8080/myproject/home.html works fine). I also added a new Inbound rule in control panel firewall settings, allowing access to all ports for protocol TCP. Still have problem in running application with the url 10.0.0.4:8080/myproject/home.html (both on same machine as well as laptop and mobile). I do not care about concurrency issues. How extensive is an Object in CakePHP model linkage?

I was hoping someone with an understanding on CakePHP could shed some light on a question I've been having. Here's my scenario, I have a User this User has a Company which in turn has many Department and many Address. If I were to get a User could I expect to have access to the Company and all models associated with that Company? So would $user['Company']['Department'][0] or $user['Company']['Address'][0] be possible? Which brings me back to the original question, how extensive is the linkage between models?

Design an api using rails and change the forgot password functionality

I have been using rails for developing web applications and now i need to do design an api for iphone application and since i used respond to json it also produces json but i use devise for authentication in my web application and when i send email and password along with the api it gives out {"user":{"authentication_token":"Lsusyd27ewgasga63","email":"[email protected]"}} and there is forgot password functionality in the iphone app but in the web application when clicking on forgot password button it sends an email to the users email, whereby the user has to go to his mail and click on the link sent and it will take to the change password path and after changing it the user will be login but in this iphone app i want to send the password to the user mail and the user can use that password and login. How can i do this? Also do i have to create new controllers for api or the web application controller is enough if it respond as json? please help me.

Why doesn't 12.04 recognize my ATI Radeon X300SE graphics card?

So far everything including the BCM4321 card is working, however, the OEM ATI Radeon X300SE (RV370) is not recognized. When I go into system details the card comes up as unknown. When I run lspci the card shows up as: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 5B60 [Radeon X300 (PCIE)] 01:00.1 Display controller: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 [Radeon X300SE] I have attempted check Additional Drivers but the card does not show up as needing a driver. So far this is causing the system to run warmer as the processor is doing a bit of the work to run Unity and any full screen videos tend to be rather choppy. Is there an available driver that will fix my issue and what is the install method? I am not scared to run a terminal so no worries there, as long as I have instructions, I can find my way. I am running under 12.04 LTS Kernel 3.2.0-25-generic-pae

I'm working now on a project which a user can save their own coupon codes on the websites, so I want to know what is the best to do that, Lets say, I have 1 table with the users, like this, userId | firstName | lastName | codeId and then I have a table of the coupon codes, like this, codeId | codeNumber So what I can do is to connect the codeId to userId so when someone saves the coupons goes the codeId from the coupon table into the codeId of the users table, But now what if when a user have multiple coupons what do I do it should be connected to the user? I have 2 options what to do, Option 1, Saving the codeId from coupons table into the codeId of users table like 1,2,3,4,5, Option 2 To make a new row into the coupons table and to connect the user to the code with adding another field in the coupon table userId and putting into it the user which has added the coupon his userId of the users table, So what of the two options is better to do? Caching roles in a cookie

1) a) I assume roles are cached ( by setting Roles.CacheRolesInCookie ) only for current user? b) Besides Roles.GetRolesForUser(_currentUser), are there any other methods that will read role information for current user from role cookie and thus won’t have to connect to the data base? 2) a) I assume that normally role cookie gets updated only when current user is added or removed from the role(s) or when the cookie expires? b) Because role names can be cached apart from the data source, it is possible that changes to role management at the data source would not be reflected in the cached values. In this case, the user must close and re-open their browser to clear the cached cookie value. How exactly could role cookie get cached apart from the data source? 3) If the number of roles cached in a role cookie equals the value of Roles.MaxCachedResults, then I assume when Roles.GetRolesForUser (_currentuser) gets called, it will need to check the DB to see whether user is also a member of any additional roles? thanx

Developing Schema Compare for Oracle (Part 4): Script Configuration

If you've had a chance to play around with the Schema Compare for Oracle beta, you may have come across this screen in the synchronization wizard: This screen is one of the few screens that, along with the project configuration form, doesn't come from SQL Compare. This screen was designed to solve a couple of issues that, although aren't specific to Oracle, are much more of a problem than on SQL Server: Datatype conversions and NOT NULL columns. 1. Datatype conversions SQL Server is generally quite forgiving when it comes to datatype conversions using ALTER TABLE. For example, you can convert from a VARCHAR to INT using ALTER TABLE as long as all the character values are parsable as integers. Oracle, on the other hand, only allows ALTER TABLE conversions that don't change the internal data format. Essentially, every change that requires an actual datatype conversion has to be done using a rebuild with a conversion function. That's OK, as we can simply hard-code the various conversion functions for the valid datatype conversions and insert those into the rebuild SELECT list. However, as there always is with Oracle, there's a catch. Have a look at the NUMTODSINTERVAL function. As well as specifying the value (or column) to convert, you have to specify an interval_unit, which tells oracle how to interpret the input number. We can't hardcode a default for this parameter, as it is entirely dependent on the user's data context! So, in order to convert NUMBER to INTERVAL DAY TO SECOND/INTERVAL YEAR TO MONTH, we need to have feedback from the user as to what to put in this parameter while we're generating the sync script - this requires a new step in the engine action/script generation to insert these values into the script, as well as new UI to allow the user to specify these values in a sensible fashion. In implementing the engine and UI infrastructure to allow this it made much more sense to implement it for any rebuild datatype conversion, not just NUMBER to INTERVALs. For conversions which we can do, we pre-fill the 'value' box with the appropriate function from the documentation. The user can also type in arbitary SQL expressions, which allows the user to specify optional format parameters for the relevant conversion functions, or indeed call their own functions to convert between values that don't have a built-in conversion defined. As the value gets inserted as-is into the rebuild SELECT list, any expression that is valid in that context can be specified as the conversion value. 2. NOT NULL columns Another problem that is solved by the new step in the sync wizard is adding a NOT NULL column to a table. If the table contains data (as most database tables do), you can't just add a NOT NULL column, as Oracle doesn't know what value to put in the new column for existing rows - the DDL statement will fail. There are actually 3 separate scenarios for this problem that have separate solutions within the engine: Adding a NOT NULL column to a table without a rebuild Here, the workaround is to add a column default with an appropriate value to the column you're adding: ALTER TABLE tbl1 ADD newcol NUMBER DEFAULT <value> NOT NULL; Note, however, there is something to bear in mind about this solution; once specified on a column, a default cannot be removed. To 'remove' a default from a column you change it to have a default of NULL, hence there's code in the engine to treat a NULL default the same as no default at all. Adding a NOT NULL column to a table, where a separate change forced a table rebuild Fortunately, in this case, a column default is not required - we can simply insert the default value into the rebuild SELECT clause. Changing an existing NULL to a NOT NULL column To implement this, we run an UPDATE command before the ALTER TABLE to change all the NULLs in the column to the required default value. For all three, we need some way of allowing the user to specify a default value to use instead of NULL; as this is essentially the same problem as datatype conversion (inserting values into the sync script), we can re-use the UI and engine implementation of datatype conversion values. We also provide the option to alter the new column to allow NULLs, or to ignore the problem completely. Note that there is the same (long-running) problem in SQL Compare, but it is much more of an issue in Oracle as you cannot easily roll back executed DDL statements if the script fails at some point during execution. Furthermore, the engine of SQL Compare is far less conducive to inserting user-supplied values into the generated script. As we're writing the Schema Compare engine from scratch, we used what we learnt from the SQL Compare engine and designed it to be far more modular, which makes inserting procedures like this much easier.

Its a User object with Items. If i put another CreateCriteria at the end it refers to the Items, not the User.

Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. Joining a one-to-many association with a many-to-many association in Rails 3

Hi all, I have a many-to-many association between a User class and a Table class. Additionally, i have a one-to-many association between the User and the Table (one User ultimately owns the table). I am trying to access all of the tables which the user may access (essintally joining both associations). I need to add them to the user list. The master table may have duplicates in them (check picture). I am building a website in python/django and want to predict wether a user submission is valid or wether it is spam. Users have an accept rate on their submissions, like this website has. Users can moderate other users' submissions; and these moderations are later metamoderated by an admin. Given this: user A with an submission accept rate of 60% submits something. user B moderates A's post as a valid submission. However, his moderations are often wrong, and his moderations' accept rate is a mere 30%. user C moderates A's post as spam. User C is usually right. His moderations' accept rate is 80%. How can I predict the chance of A's post being spam?

How to write a custom (odd) authentication plugins for Wordpress, Joomla and MediaWiki

On our network (a group of related websites - not a LAN) we have a common authentication system which works like this: On a network site ("consumer") the user clicks on a login link This redirects the user to a login page on our auth system ("RAS"). Upon successful login the user is directed back to the consumer site. Extra data is passed in the query string. This extra data does not include any information about the user yet. The consumer site's backend contacts RAS to get the information about the logged in user. So as you can see, the consumer site knows nothing about the authentication method. It doesn't know if it's by username/password, fingerprint, smartcard, or winning a game of poker. This is the main problem I'm encountering when trying to find out how I could write custom authentication plugins for these packages, acting as consumer sites: Wordpress Joomla MediaWiki For example Joomla offers a pretty simple auth plugin system, but it depends on a username/password entered on the Joomla site. Any hints on where to start?

Django query filter a set of data

if a have a query like following = Relations.objects.filter(initiated_by = request.user) in which i'm having all the users followed by the currently logged in user, and i want to display those user's blog posts. Using a query like: blog = New.objects.filter(created_by = following) it only shows me the blog posts of the user with the id = 1 (though the currently logged in user doesn't actually follow him) in template i have : {% for object in blog %} <a href='/accounts/profile_view/{{object.created_by}}/'> {{object.created_by}}</a> <br /> {{object.post}}<br /> {% endfor %} Where am i wrong?

Hello, I am using the following for my customers to unsubscribe from my mailing list; def index @user = User.find_by_salt(params[:subscribe_code]) if @user.nil? flash[:notice] = "the link is not valid...." render :action => 'index' else Notification.delete_all(:user_id => @user.id) flash[:notice] = "you have been unsubscribed....." redirect_to :controller => 'home' end end my link looks like; http://site.com/unsubscribe/32hj5h2j33j3h333 so the above compares the random string to a field in my user table and accordingly deletes data from the notification table. My question; is this approach secure? is there a better/more efficient way for doing this? All suggestions are welcome.

Prior to this update, Gmail could search inside of HTML attachments but lacked more advanced attachment querying abilities. Now when you search your Gmail account you’ll see search results for not only the subject and body contents but also the contents of popular formats like PDF and Word documents. Don’t forget to take advantage of advanced search terms to speed up your query. If you know the information you need is in an attachment but can’t remember which email, include “has:attachment” in your search to only peek inside emails with attachments.
