• Apple Magic Trackpad multitouch configuration

  Today I installed the Ubuntu 10.10 release on my Desktop PC. I was running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS with an Apple Magic Trackpad and everything was working fine. After today's fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10, I don't see my Apple Magic Trackpad's multitouch working. Two-finger scrolling and three-finger third mouse button clicking are completely broken. Has anyone else experienced a similar issue? Has anyone had success with Ubuntu 10.10 and an Apple Magic TrackPad? Please help me to fix this issue. Your help is highly appreciated...

• Creating a secure SQL server login - CHECK_EXPIRATION & CHECK_POLICY

  In SQL Server you can create users using T-SQL or using the options provided by SQL Server Management Studio.   CREATE LOGIN sql_user WITH PASSWORD ='sql_user_password' MUST_CHANGE, DEFAULT_DATABASE = defDB, CHECK_EXPIRATION = ON, CHECK_POLICY = ONAs mentioned in the previous article (http://weblogs.asp.net/cabhilash/archive/2010/04/07/login-failed-for-user-sa-because-the-account-is-currently-locked-out-the-system-administrator-can-unlock-it.aspx) when CHECK_POLICY = ON user account follows the password rules provided in the system on which the SQL server is installed. When MUST_CHANGE keyword is used user is forced to change the password when he/she tries to login for the first time. CHECK_EXPIRATION and CHECK_POLICY are only enforced on Windows Server 2003 and later. If you want to turn off the password expiration enforcement or security policy enforcement, you can do by using the following statements. (But these wont work if you have created your login with MUST_CHANGE and user didn't change the default password) ALTER LOGIN sql_login WITH CHECK_EXPIRATION = OFF go ALTER LOGIN sql_login WITH CHECK_POLICY = OFF

• Silverlight Html Placeholder now support OOB mode

  With the official Silverlight 4 release this week, one of the things we introduced in the Telerik Silverlight controls is the ability to use the Html Placeholder control in OOB in the same way you do when the control is hosted in the browser. The good news is that you don't need to do anything in order to enable this feature. It comes out of the box and if you have an app that is using the HtmlPlaceholder you just need to install it in OOB mode to see the same html that you are seeing when the application is hosted in the browser. When in OOB mode we are using internally the Microsoft WebBrowser control to render the Html - that's why this feature is SL4 specific and is not available in the SL3 binaries (which we still officially support).   Go play with it and if you have any questions ...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Can anyone tell me why Gnome 3 looks like as if it were a gnome fallback session in my virtualbox?

  For some reason Gnome 3 wont work in my virtualbox. Both gnome classic and gnome look exactly identical. The version of my virtualbox is: 4.1.2_ Ubuntu r38459 The 3D acceleration is on in the virtualbox and the Guest Additions is installed in the virtualbox from the software center. Obviously, the graphic card driver is installed on the main Ubuntu system I am using with my laptop. (although the post-release updates can't be installed for whatever reason) Gnome shell is installed from the software center in the virtualbox. Now the issue is that the gnome and gnome classic look like just the same. Here is an image of what gnome looks like (so does gnome classic too....so I am only posting one image): What causes this issue? By the way....I am using Ubuntu 11.10 with gnome fallback session.

• What to do when projects are slow and you are being held up by others?

  Where I work, projects take a significant amount of time because the teams are large, there is a lot of "design and analysis", a lot of documentation, and work always gets pushed off. I work in the middle tier and I always have to wait for the services and client folks to get their work done. Oftentimes there are weeks at a time when I can't get any work done. I feel bored and weird just sitting here scrambling to at least appear like I am busy. Management seems to do little when asked for more work. What do you do in such cases?

• What's the format of Real World Performance Day?

  A question that has cropped a lot of late is "what's the format of Real World Performance Day?" Not an unreasonable question you might think. Sure enough, a quick check of the Independent Oracle User Group's website tells us a bit about the Real World Performance Day event, but no formal agenda? This was one of the questions I posed to Tom Kyte (one of the main presenters) in our recent podcast. Tom tells us that this isn't your traditional event where one speaker follows another with loads of slides. In fact, the Real World Performance Day features Tom and fellow Oracle performance experts - Andrew Holdsworth and Graham Wood - continuously on stage throughout the day. All three will be discussing database performance challenges and solutions from development, architectural design and management perspectives. • Juju bootstrap fails with "Temporary failure in name resolution" using Amazon AWS

  I have followed the instructions over at https://juju.ubuntu.com/docs/config-aws.html to try and setup myself with a juju environment. It all seemed to setup alright. SSH keys, Gererate config, repository, adding access id and secret keys to environments.yaml file. Although my key file from aws IAM management console was called credentials.csv rather than rootkey, I couldn't find that link described in the documentation. When I give the command juju bootstrap in the testing page. It fails giving me the error: juju bootstrap ERROR Get https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/juju-gobblygookmynukmbersinhere/provider-state: lookup s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com: Temporary failure in name resolution (note I just replaced my numbers for this posting my actual terminal has my numbers in. This is my first attempt at any ec2 work so I have gone in and created new IAM profiles. What have I done wrong? Any help would be great. I think I'm in over my head!

• Infrastructure and Platform As A Service in Private Cloud at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory

  Scientists at the National Ignition Facility (NIF)— the world’s largest laser, at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL)— need research environment that requires re-creating the physical environment and conditions that exist inside the sun. They have built private cloud infrastructure using Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c to provision such an environment for research.  Tim Frazier of LLNL joined the "Managing Your Private Cloud With Oracle Enterprise Manager' session at Oracle Open World 2012 and discussed how the latest features in Oracle VM and Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c enables them to accelerate application provisioning in their private cloud. He also talked about how to increase service delivery agility, improve standardized roll outs, and do proactive management to gain total control of the private cloud environment. He also presented at the "Scene and Be Heard Theater" at Oracle OpenWorld 2012 and shared a lot of good information about his project and what they are doing in their private cloud environment.   The more I learn about programming, the more things I see that could be improved by a great deal. Often, a companies process management is total SWAG or they have Frames based websites written recently, .NET 1.1 based code, no separation of concerns, poor quality control...I could go on and on and on... Projects can succeed, but there tends to be so much waste I am amazed at how much time and money a company can throw away. I've seen it happen at several companies. So is it that ignorance truly is bliss? UPDATE Question "How is it that top developers (I don't mean like Jon Skeet level, I mean guys who are dedicated enough to hit a forum and try for self-improvement) even want to code anymore after they see the often insurmountable sociological and technical problems they are told to fix, but then scolded for doing so? "

• How to set up a SPF record?

  The clients on my VPS are all getting spammed. The spam seemingly comes from their own email addresses - it is clear that somehow something got into my VPS and was able to capture all the email addresses that existed and is now using them to send spam. I was advised to set up a SPF record, but I am unsure what this is or how to go about it. After reading, I have figured out how to create one in CPanel, but I cannot find what to do with it now. Do I copy it into somewhere in my DNS records in Zone Management? Can anyone point me in the right direction?
