• MBA versus MSIS

  I am considering going back to school for my masters and I've been looking at several avenues I can take. I've been considering either an MBA or an MSIS degree. Overall I know that an MBA is going to give me a solid skill set that can help me become an executive. However they seem to be a dime a dozen these days and the University I can get into is good, but it's not exactly in the top 100 anything. My undergrad MINOR was in Business Information Systems. I'm rusty as hell, considering I haven't touched it, but an MSIS would be more in the direction of my past academic experience and seems to touch both on business management and IT. Question... With an MSIS will I just be a middleman? Will I really be an important person with a real skill set or will I merely be someone who isn't quite cut out to be a manager and who is clueless about the tech side? Is an MSIS degree going to give me a real chance to move up the pay scale quickly or am I better off learning programing, networking through another BS degree? What will give me more upward mobility career wise? An MBA or an MSIS?

• Windows 7 power management in Boot Camp mode

  I have a Macbook Pro with Windows 7 installed in Boot Camp. I have serious problems with the power management and not sure why. I have the default Balanced power plan selected. Many times when I close the laptop and leave it for more than just a few minutes, when I open it back up, it does not awake immediately. I end up having to press the power button to get it to wake up. Sometimes this causes it to wake up in Windows mode, sometimes it reboots completely, sometimes the battery has been drained and Windows has to restart. Is this a common problem? Can I fix it?

• Unable to install Win XP nor Win 7 after installing Ubuntu 11.1

  I'll try to make this scenario as clear as possible. Laptop Specs HP dv6-2189la: 500 HDD 4GB Ram Intel i7 Personal Specs - Linux newbie running for the first time. Quite confused :( I had Windows 7 x64, decided to start fresh new so I planned on formatting. Since I use it for work and didn't require it for another week, I didn't rush into installing Win 7 immediately as I wanted to try Ubuntu for quite a while. 1) Downloaded Ubuntu 11.1 2) Burned ISO to CD 3) Installed Ubuntu using the full HDD of 500GB erasing Win7 4) Ubuntu ran awesome (especially for me being a Linux Newbie from scratch) I used Ubuntu for a while, but now I need to get back to work with Win 7. Tried running the installation CD for Win 7 and it just skips to Ubuntu without loading. Checked BIOS, tried other discs, even tried the disc on another computer and it works. Since that didn't work, I tried running Win XP. This CD does load, it starts loading files, drives, kernel, blah blah and before even getting to install it Blue screens with error 0x0000007b. I already used Gparted and created up to 250 GB space for Windows. Formatted to NTFS. I really don´t know what do now. I've tried almost everything I know within my knowledge. I could say I'm an advanced PC user, but I bumped into the Linux wall starting from scratch. All suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!

• MySQL Replication Error

  I recently updated my master server to 5.1.41 and noticed that the slave was no longer replicating. It was returning this erorr: 091208 12:53:31 [ERROR] Slave I/O: error connecting to master '[email protected]:3306' - retry-time: 10 retries: 86400, Error_code: 2026 091208 12:53:41 [ERROR] Slave I/O: error connecting to master '[email protected]:3306' - retry-time: 10 retries: 86400, Error_code: 1045 The first error is apparently an SSL error, followed by auth denied.. Thing is, I haven't touched my SSL key or user access in months (and the key is fine, since I'm using the same one on that machine to replicate from other master servers.. Any ideas? Edit: Months later, I've tried with 5.1.44 and the problem is persisting. When I roll back to 5.1.39 replication works great... I guess I can't use anything newer than 5.1.39....

  I don't understand why many (many) companies treat software developers like they are assembly line workers making widgets. Joel Spolsky has a great example of the problems this creates: With programmers, it's especially hard. Productivity depends on being able to juggle a lot of little details in short term memory all at once. Any kind of interruption can cause these details to come crashing down. When you resume work, you can't remember any of the details (like local variable names you were using, or where you were up to in implementing that search algorithm) and you have to keep looking these things up, which slows you down a lot until you get back up to speed. Here's the simple algebra. Let's say (as the evidence seems to suggest) that if we interrupt a programmer, even for a minute, we're really blowing away 15 minutes of productivity. For this example, lets put two programmers, Jeff and Mutt, in open cubicles next to each other in a standard Dilbert veal-fattening farm. Mutt can't remember the name of the Unicode version of the strcpy function. He could look it up, which takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which takes 15 seconds. Since he's sitting right next to Jeff, he asks Jeff. Jeff gets distracted and loses 15 minutes of productivity (to save Mutt 15 seconds). Now let's move them into separate offices with walls and doors. Now when Mutt can't remember the name of that function, he could look it up, which still takes 30 seconds, or he could ask Jeff, which now takes 45 seconds and involves standing up (not an easy task given the average physical fitness of programmers!). • setting ulimit and ubuntu 8.04

  Hi there, We have two ubuntu 8.04 servers. With the database server I set the table_cache to 1000 however when I restart mysql the status only shows 257 and the open files limit says 1024 I adjusted ulimit by doing ulimit -n 8192 and then restarting mysql; this seemed to do the tick however after a few hours I did ulimit -n and saw it had returned back to 1024 Bit of a worry. I edited the /etc/security/limits.conf and added mysql soft nofile 8192 mysql hard nofile 8192 then rebooted, no change. I then edited and change mysql to * rebooted, no change I then edited and changed it to one line * - nofile 8192 and rebooted, no change. cat /proc/sys/fs/file-max gives me 768730 sysctl fs.file-max gives me fs.file-max = 768730 I am at a bit of a loss to how I can set and keep the ulimit value set so I can increase the table cache properly on mysql.

• Recover lost NTFS partition on SSD

  Hello, About 2 month ago I upgraded my Dell Latitude E6500 laptop with a Corsair Force F120 SSD drive. Everything worked well until about a week or so back. I started the computer and was faced with a beep and a message saying "No boot sector on Internal HDD (IRRT). No bootable devices". Since I figured that the boot sector had somehow got corrupt I tried booting from the Windows 7 dvd in order to repair the boot sector. But the Windows 7 installation program only found a blank drive with 111GB of unallocated space. I panicked and brought the drive with me to work to let a colleague have a look at it. We made a disk image of the entire drive and ran the drive through Testdisk in Linux. Testdisk did not find any partitions. It appears that the drive has been completely erased... What has happened? What is causing this behavior on an SSD?

• Restore monitor detection to one only or restore start menu to bottom

  I have a co-worker that is no longer able to see his start menu. He used to have it pinned to the left edge of his screen. I tried to troubleshoot it a bit and discovered if we do Windows + R then "cmd" [enter] the command prompt opens (but we don't see the start menu or run box), meaning the start menu is somewhere, just off screen. Restarting doesn't help. Is there some way to force Windows to think it only has a single monitor? It seems to "think" it has two but there's only one and we can get the Start menu back. Or, is there a way to restore the start menu to the bottom? Additional info We are able to right-click the desktop for display settings, etc. We can also get into Windows Explorer (via Ctrl + E) so if we need any of that to restore settings we can do it.

• Postfix on IspCP cannot send to google apps mail if it is in the same domain

  In my vps setup I have ispcp omega 1.0.7 installed. Everything works fine except the fact that postfix cannot send to google apps mail when the domain of google apps is also registered in ispcp. Postfix sends an email to normal addresses (hotmail, yahoo, gmail etc). I use external dns. There is also a discussion I started in the ispcp forum here .mail.log file provides these messages: mail for exampledomain.gr loops back to myself". postfix/bounce: sender non-delivery notification. postfix/qmgr: removed Any help would be appreciated.

• Find the source of malware?

  I have a server that was running an older version of lighttpd (1.4.19 on a freebsd 6.2-RELEASE (yea, old) machine) and google alerted me that it had found malware embedded on one of my server's pages. It just so happened to be our index page. I promptly removed the malware and started looking at server logs for how it got there. With no trace in any of the logs of the files being edited, I noticed that the index page's owner had been changed to www, which is the lighttpd user. I then concluded that some sort of veunerability must have existed for that software version and promptly upgraded to 1.4.26. Now the malware is back. I have started some pretty verbose server logging with ftp, lighttpd, and all login attempts to try and see how this script is getting in. Are their any suggestions as to other approaches to take?

• Running a powershell script at startup

  I am writing a script to remove a computer from the domain, rename it, then add it back. It works fine when I set the trigger to AtLogOn but when I switch to AtStartUp I run into some issues. I get this error when it restarts to run the first scheduled task: 0x8007051F: There are currently no logon servers available to service the logon request. I suspect the script tries to run with no network connection set up so I tested using the RandomDelay parameter, and it worked like its suppose to. I cant rely on a random delay so I am looking for an alternative. Is there a way to test the network status before the script begins or a way to delay the script a specific amount of time? I am using Register-ScheduledJob provided by Powershell 3.0 Thanks in advance

• Is there a good XP like windows explorer for windows Vista?

  I'm still refusing to go to Windows Vista and now Windows 7 mainly due to the windows explorer, I find it cumbersome and hard to use exclusively with a keyboard. I use XP file explorer in the most basic view, the address bar at the top and files always in list view underneath. The reason I do this is because I'm almost blind and do everything from the keyboard and don't touch the mouse whilst navigating through files, this is because I can type "L[ENTER]D[Enter]B[Enter]" and know that I'm in "c:\documents and settings\Brett Ryan", and I can hit [Tab] once to go to the address bar to type in a folder. Can anyone suggest a replacement for windows explorer that brings back this basic navigational behavior?

• Dell printer goes offline after second print job.

  Dell printer goes offline(server connection) after second print job. Although the printer's display says it is ready. If you turn off then on the printer you can send one job and goes back offline(server connection) on the next print job. We have multiple Dell 2330dn printers installed through a print server, only one of the printers is experiencing this problem. Two different users. Two different machines. Two different operating systems (win7 and Vista). The computers have been reset. Dell printers have web interface if this helps (through IP address). Thanks for any help!

  When we have to move a database from one server to another server or when we have to move a database from one file to another file, we commonly use Database Attach or Detach process. I have been doing this for quite a while as well. Recently, when I was visiting an organization I found that in this organization lots of developers are still using an older version of the code to attach the database. I quickly pointed that out to them the new method to attach the database, however it was really interesting to find out that they really did not know that sp_attach_db is now a deprecated method to attach the database. This really made me to do today’s SQL in Sixty Seconds. I demonstrate in this SQL in Sixty Seconds how to attach or detach the database using a new method of attaching database. • Windows Explorer is blank

  I am using Windows 7 Utlimate x64. Once a week, or so, when I boot up n the morning and launch Windows Explorer it shows up blank, as the following screen shot show. Clicking on my Computer doesn't load anything. Interestingly, I can go the the Address bar at the top and type in a folder name. This brings up that folder's files and subfolders, but as I drill around the tree of folders on the left only shows the immediate folder and not its siblings. There's no plus icon to expand the folder, etc. My usual "solution" is to reboot, which typically brings everything back to normal, but this is a frustrating remedy. Any idea what's going on and how to fix it? Some Googling turned up this discussion, but the remedy was to uninstall a particular piece of software that I don't have installed (Virtual Clone Drive). • How do you research while pair programming?

  I've recently started at a new job and pairing has helped me become effective there very quickly. I am, however, having a hard time when we must do brief joint research during our workflow, covering API features, code examples, or command options. My team lead urges us to do all research on our pairing station, rather than our individual laptops, and to synchronize our research by verbally negotiating the steps between different web resources. I research, read, and absorb information differently from my pairing partner, and I feel much more productive when I can follow a thread of research to the next web page exactly when I want to, rather than trying to keep exact pace and place with what my partner's reading. We're both smart and fast, but we can't help moving in different ways and instantaneous velocities when we're figuring stuff out. It seems so much easier to poke around individually for a minute until one of us says "I've got it," then get back together and code. When you pair program, how do you handle short research tasks? What works best for you, and how to you keep in sync with your partner?

• Trouble installing Lagarith Lossless Codec (Codec Removal?)

  I had been using the Lagarith Lossless Codec with camstudio on Windows XP Pro SP3 for a little while before I switched to Ubuntu. Now I'm back trying to do something on windows and the codec is now missing. I tried to install it via the .exe and even manually with the .inf but it's not being listed by camstudio as installed. I'm wondering if one of the other codecs I installed might have messed with it and yet some of the files are still fine so whatever method the installers use to check for existing files before install is returning positive and not re-installing it. How can I get Lagarith to work again? Maybe I need to know how to uninstall codecs.

• Blogger.com kills FTP

  History (you can safely ignore) Back in 2002 I came across some (almost) free Linux/Apache space and set up my first manually-created HTML-based home page, which still exists: http://www.danielmoth.com/. In 2004 I wanted to have a blog that would be hosted on a sub-folder of my domain, and at the same time I did not want to mess with setting up a blog engine myself. I found the perfect solution in blogger.com, which offered a web interface for creating blog posts (and managing the pages' template) and it would then use FTP to upload HTML pages to my space (no server-side programming/installation required at all)! FTP feature dropped by blogger.com Unfortunately, along the way Google purchased blogger.com and a couple of months ago they announced that they decided to kill the FTP feature, and they are forcing customers using that feature to have their content hosted (in an opaque way) on Google's servers. Even though I prefer having my content on my own space, I would have considered moving it to Google's servers if I could host my blog in a sub-folder and preserve my full blog URL: http://www.danielmoth.com/Blog/ (including my home pages being hosted at the root of the domain). Sadly, that is not possible. What now So I decided to move my blog somewhere else. I'll document on the next few posts how I did that (inc. a tool I wrote) in case it helps someone else in the same situation and also as a reminder to me if I need to do something like this again in the future. • Copy or Export Byobu screen?

  One of the best things about byobu is the scrollback feature in a given session. I have been working on something, and I have tons of lines in the current scrollback session and I want to copy everything to a file, how to?? According to the screen home page, looks like you can do this? but when I'm done I do a search for all those files, can't find them. C-a h (hardcopy) Write a hardcopy of the current window to the file "hardcopy.n". C-a H (log) Begins/ends logging of the current window to the file "screenlog.n". I tried, it, and looked around, can't tell. Ctrl-a ~ - Save the current window's scrollback buffer there's also enter, copy mode, select with space key, and press enter to copy, I do that, the screen displays gibberish for 10 seconds refreshes, done. cat >> ~/log.output << COMM --paste using ctrl a ] I think-- COMM this confirms the copy paste works, but when I press enter, nothing get saved to that log file, I've checked, I do have write privileges in my home directory. lol the select all, from the xfce4-terminal doesn't go far enough, and scrolling back with the mouse, well won't work, no need to try it, I know byobu buffer doesn't work like that.
