Help please! My backup method of choice is to clone my "working" drive to another identical drive. I have 2 windows drives and I clone my working one to the other one once per month. No problem - each will boot if I select it. Now with the lack of future support for XP, I am getting familiar with Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. I have it on one drive and I have a second identical drive that I want to be able to clone it to once/month. Not as necessary to do this with Ubuntu as with windows, I know, but I'm anal. So I have followed #47209 MestreLion's procedure with just the two Ubuntu drives "on line". I.e., boot my "working" drive with Live CD, use Gparted to be sure I know what's what, open terminal and enter and execute the dd command, Go to bed till the clone is done, shut down the computer, disconnect the input/source drive, boot up using BIOS to select the remaining output drive. The drive starts fine but all is not OK. It puts up a screen that says I'm on a Guest Session and asks for a password. Well, for one thing I have my Ubuntu set up to start without a password being entered. I have one, of course, I put it in but it isn't accepted. I can't get by this Guest Session screen. I am fine, of course. I can disconnect this drive, hook up my "main" ubuntu drive and all the rest, and go on with my business. But I don't have the desired "emergency backup" drive working where I could jump on and use it immediately if I needed it. Can someone give me some guidance here?? What (else) do I need to do. How to increase the disk cache of Windows 7

Under Windows 7 (64 bit), I'm reading through 9000 moderately sized files. In total, there is more than 200 MB of data. Using Java (JDK 1.6.21) I'm iterating over the files. The first 1400 or so go at full speed but then speed drops off to 4ms per file. It turns out that the main cost is incurred simply by opening the files. I'm opening the files using new FileInputStream (and of course closing them in time to avoid file leaks). After some investigating, I see that Windows' disk cache is using only 100 MB or so of RAM although I have 8 GiB available. I've tried increasing the cache size using the CacheSet tool but any values I provide are considered out of range. I've also tried enabling the LargeSystemCache registry key but (after rebooting) the CacheSet tool still indicates I'm using 100 MB of cache (and doesn't increase during the test run). Does anybody have any suggestions to "encourage" Windows 7 to cache my 9000 files?

WINAPI window management question

I'm learning to develop windows applications using WINAPI and plain C. Now I got a bit confused with all those handles and would like to ask if you guys could teach me some good practices to structure and handle controls and windows. Here's where I get confused: Using the IDs declared in the resources for each object, we can get their handles using GetDlgItem(). Now what if we don't know their parent, which is needed by this function. One example: We have the main window created at launch. Then we register two new window classes and create a window for each new class and we create a message function for each too. Now if inside one of the children windows I create a button and inside the other child window I create a text label. Now when we click the button inside of child window A the label in child window B shall be modified to whatever. The WM_COMMAND for the button is interpreted inside the message loop for child window A. Now what would be the best and more elegant way to access the text label inside the child window B? I am in the process of learning the WINAPI and just want to learn it right from the start instead of producing Hacked code that someday becomes unreadable and to later have to adapt to a new way of programing.

How does a private intra network connect to the internet?

Yesterday I visited the offices of RailTel - a public company in India that provides communication backbone to the Indian Railways, they had a very sophisticated setup of Optical Fiber cables for data transmission. They said that this is a private network for internal use only. Then when I was in the Exchange Office - the main communication office, a place where they actually use those communication channels. They said that we could connect to the Intranet and as well as the Internet! My question is, that how is this possible? How can privately laid optical fibers connect globally? On google, I picked up the term internet exhange? But this has got me confused further, why would a private network want to go to this exchange? Please explain me in very simple terms, how does this all work? If this is just a connection of wires, then why charge so much for little bandwidth? Thanks.

Is it possible to change User's Home Directorys permission in OSX?

Most of your staff uses OSX as main operation system. The problem is that recently we were attacked with some odd malware: users are getting zip-file via mail, and when they open this zip file, they execute a binary keylogger malware, that is inside this zipped file. (One click is enough). We have some non-technical limitations and due this limitation we can't configure user's mail servers. But actually we have physical access to their laptops. As far as I know, there is possible to mount user's home directory without "x" (execution) permission in Linux and *BSD. So users can't run some binary file inside home directory. Is it possible to configure OS X so that user can't execute files inside /Users/?

How to create repeatable table with unique ID's using jQuery

I need to create a table structure that can be "copied" and populated with a new set of data. However, each table must have unique IDs for functions that must access them later. For example: <table class="main"> <thead><tr><th class="header"></th></tr></thead> <tbody> <tr class="row"><td class="col0"></td><td class="col1"></td></tr> </tbody> </table> My current thought is to use jQuery to load the table from a seperate html file into a variable. Using this saved table I could then create a function that copies it, traverses the table to add an ID to each section where information will need to be appended from a seperate data source, and return this new table. I am new to jQuery and feel like I may be missing an easier/better way to accomplish this. Any help on this subject would be appreciated.

Which are the best ways to organize view hierarchies in GUI interfaces?

I'm currently trying to figure out the best techniques for organizing GUI view hierarchies, that is dividing a window into several panels which are in turn divided into other components. I've given a look to the Composite Design Pattern, but I don't know if I can find better alternatives, so I'd appreciate to know if using the Composite is a good idea, or it would be better looking for some other techniques. I'm currently developing in Java Swing, but I don't think that the framework or the language can have a great impact on this. Any help will be appreciated. ---------EDIT------------ I was currently developing a frame containing three labels, one button and a text field. At the button pressed, the content inside the text field would be searched, and the results written inside the three labels. One of my typical structure would be the following: MainWindow | Main panel | Panel with text field and labels. | Panel with search button Now, as the title explains, I was looking for a suitable way of organizing both the MainPanel and the other two panels. But here came problems, since I'm not sure whether organizing them like attributes or storing inside some data structure (i.e. LinkedList or something like this). Anyway, I don't really think that both my solution are really good, so I'm wondering if there are really better approaches for facing this kind of problems. Hope it helps

Amazon - install a complete server on EBS

is it possible to install a full working OS with a webserver, db, and all needed stuff on an EBS storage? If so, would I immediatly gain benefits by mounting this EBS on a better instance? Otherwise (if I cannot install a complete image, or if you don't think it's reasonable) can I install the software so that I only need to mount the EBS on a new instance to have it working? I purchased a Medium Reserved Instance, but when there will be the need to get a better instance I'd like to move the whole db/website, I'd simply buy a better instance and then attach the EBS. Is it possibile? I'm imaging about it like an hard drive that would be mounted on a better server. Of course, more RAM would allow me to increase caching limits, and that's ok, but I don't want to reinstall anything (the main website is a magentocommerce and it's pretty painful to move it). P.S. is the Standard EBS (100 IOPS) valid or do I need to choose a Provisioned IOPS (up to 1000 IOPS)?

System File Checker vs Service Pack Reinstall

When trying to repair slow workstations, I've found that running sfc /scannow helps quite a lot in a few of my environments running really old computers. I've also seen recommendations of reinstalling the last service pack after software installation to help keep the system stable. That makes sense as it would replace a lot of the dll files with the ones that would come with the service pack. They both seem to do the same thing, but SFC some times will ask for a disk, where the Service Pack will not. What is the main difference between the two?

Restore wubi install after changing master drive

Recently I got a 160G drive to install other Unix distributions and learn to use them for the sake of my current job. However I've got only 2 drive connectors free (on the primary channel). Therefore I've decided to remove an 80G hard drive which has the MBR and the main Windows bootloader. My problem in particular is that I've got another 250G drive which has a Wubi installation of Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), which I want to preserve on the bootloader that's going to be running for all the other OSes (potentially Grub). How would I do that? Since Wubi is actually sort of windows reliant, as far as I've learned so far.

How can I activate a Panel-icon via a script (or get its screen co-ordinates; to click it)?

This question is in the context of Lucid 10.04 desktop (ie. no Unity). I do most screen navigation via the keyboard (not the mouse), so I'm looking for a script solution to re-activating an app which has been "minimized" to the Panel's Notification Area. I'll use Skype as an example. wmctrl allows me enough access to normally-minimized windows, but when Skype is "minimized" to the Notification Area, it simply goes "off the radar" as far as wmctrl is concerned. Bearing in mind that icon positions in the Notification Area can vary, is there some way to determine the screen co-ordinates of Skype's Panel icon, so I can "click" it using xdotool (or a similar utility)? ...or maybe there is a more direct way to activate the "dormant" Skype? ... (and I don't mean the mouse ;) Here is the script, so far. Mac Snow Leopard Server DNS

I have a Tomcat-driven application on my Windows server that I am planning to move to a MacMiniServer. Before I do this, I want to fully test the transition for licensing purposes. I have a Fire drive setup with Snow Leopard Server and the base app runs just fine BUT I need to be able to resolve the URL to my domain and not localhost. So, I figured I would setup panomedia.net in the DNS Server and also create an A record to my internal network IP so www.panomedia.net would dish out the same thing as localhost. The problem is: The Tomcat web app starts up going through panomedia.local and not through www.panomedia.net and My main network preference panel is still looking at my Comcast DNS search providers even though I put my local IP address as the only DNS Server and Search provider. I need to test this via an actual domain name before I commit to a 400GB data move. Can anyone help?

How to Program AWS Spot Instances to Strategically Bid So the Auction is Never Lost Until a Competitor Beats the Maximum I'm Willing to Pay?

I believe I'm in the right section of stack exchange to ask this. If not, let me know. I only use Amazon Web Services for temporary type hosting services, so the spot instances are quite valuable to me. I would also just make an instance and start and stop it - but - that doesn't necessarily fit my bootstrapped budget sadly. Anyways, it really kills me when someone outbids me on a spot instance I have (I tend to go for the larger ones which there are fewer of available) and I get randomly kicked off. I know or at least I believe there is a way to program in something somehow to dynamically change your bidding price to beat a potential competitor's if their's is higher than yours. Now, I previously believed Amazon would just charge me for the highest price right above the next lowest competitor automatically (eliminating the need for this) - so if I bid too high, then I only pay what I would of needed to in order to win and keep the auction. Essentially, I thought my bid price was my max bid price. Apparently, according to my bills and several experiments I've done - this is not the case. They charge me for whatever I bid even when I know there is no one else around to counter bid me. I needed to clarify that, but let me get back to the main point: Let's say I'm bidding $0.50, competitor comes in and bids 0.55 cents. I get kicked off. I want to have it to where I'd set a maximum I'm willing to pay (let's say $1.00 here), and then when competitor comes in and tries to bid $.55, my bid is dynamically adjusted to beat his at $0.56 up until he breaks my $1.00 threshold. I've been reading the guides and although they are more or less straightforward, I feel like they leave a few holes in them that end up confusing me. Like, for instance, where do I input said command or when do I do it? Maybe I'm just tech illiterate and need help deciphering these guides. Encrypt two drives with Truecrypt with password before boot

i'm using laptop and PC with single HDD with full disk encryption. I know how works truecrypt on single drive because i use it everyday. My second laptop has 2 HHDs. My question is how to encrypt first 128GB SSD and second 1TB HDD in same way. I have multiple applications installed on second drive so i want to have it accessible during boot in ex. Steam in installed on second drive and it starts with windows. How to do it? can i encrypt two drives in truecrypt and unlock it via password before boot? My main reason is i want to RMA laptop without removing disks or data - my data need to be encrypted. Thank you.

Why can't I right click on flash videos in Chrome? (Ubuntu 9.10)

I'm trying to change the "quality" to low of a Hulu video so I can full screen it with out it being choppy but right click does nothing. When I right click in firefox it brings up a menu. I'm running Chrome on Ubuntu 9.10, is any one else having this issue I tried Google and got nothing back. I use chrome as my main browser, I have to switch to firefox every time I watch Hulu videos. Is there another way I cant change the quality of the flash video in Chrome?

Can Remote Desktop connect only 2 monitors when the client has 3 or 4 monitors connected?

I have three monitors (all 1920x1200) connected to my desktop and I would like to RDP into another computer (running Windows Server 2003) and use only two of my three monitors. The main monitor is used for notification from the LAN like email, build status, etc. I've tried modifying the .rdp file to have a higher resolution (i.e. 3840x1200 ) which sort of works but the bits per pixel goes down to 8 and you have to manually resize the window which means that you need to change it to around 3840x1150. If I supply /span to the commandline it gives me a bit more than 3840 spanned across the three monitors (is there perhaps a limitation of say 4096 for the maximum resolution?). WORKAROUND: Connect twice to the same computer. The tables created are webpages_Membership, webpages_OAuthMembership, webpages_Roles, webpages_UsersInRoles, UserProfile. Web.config settings don’t seem to be needed. Scott Hanselman on Universal Providers was also useful if not somewhat out dated. Mac and different Spaces: conserving the windows arragement when changing the external monitor

Hi, I use Mac OS X Leopard with 4 different Spaces and an external monitor at workplace, which is located above the laptop. On each Space I work on a different project, with different terminal windows and Xcode and Finder windows. The problem happens when I am at home, then I use an external monitor but now located at left position. When the MacBook wakes up, everything gets messed up and even some windows switch from one space to another. Could I somehow fix it so always the windows belonging to one Space remain there and also the association to main/external monitor even if I change to another external monitor? Thanks

Thunderbird: "Could not initialize the application's security component" [closed]

In Thunderbird, on startup, I get the error message: "Could not initialize the application's security component" The message continues to check permissions of the profile, and free disk space. df -h shows, that I have 19G free disk space. find . -not -perm -644 -not -perm -600 -ls shows: No file without rw-permissions for me. Before the error occured, thunderbird worked well. But I changed my main mail-account. I had two, let's call them A and B, and used mainly A, but now I wanted to deaktivate it, and receive and send automatically via the second. I Had problems moving the filters from inbox A to inbox B (missing copy-functionality). In the web, I found (mollazine) hints, to move key3.db, cert8.db and secmode.db out of the way, but it didn't work for me. Another hint was to uninstall Quickcam(?. sic!), but I don't have Quickcam. A third to recreate the profile, but I have subdirectories, filters, addressbook, groups - mails back to the year 2003. I don't want to risk the loss of data. The whole errormessage is: Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory. Please check that this directory has no read/write restrictions and your hard disk is not full or close to full. It is recommended that you exit the application and fix the problem. If you continue to use this session, you might see incorrect application behaviour when accessing security features. When I open the error-console, it is empty.

Is this buffer overflow working on Mac OSX? [migrated]

Was reading through some text and playing around with attempting to write past the size of an array in C i.e buffer overflow. The text indicates that whenever you attempt to write to say array[5] when the length of the array is 5 then you get a segmentation fault but I dont seem to be getting that When using the code below. The code actually runs. #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> int main () { int i; int array[5] = {1, 2, 3, 4, 5}; for (i = 0; i <= 255; i++) { array[i] = 10; } int len = sizeof(array) / sizeof(int); printf("%d\n", len); printf("%d\n", array[254]); } On execution of the last statement, a 10 is printed. Am wondering whether this is a vulnerability or if there is something I am missing. I am running the code from iterm2 on a macbook pro.

How do I get my Intel HD graphics to work alongside my HD7850, as my second(HDMI out) monitor?

Further info: Motherboard: http://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z77%20Pro3/ Processor: http://ark.intel.com/products/65520/Intel-Core-i5-3570K-Processor-%286M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz%29 So currently my main screen is running on my HD7850. Got drivers from the amd website. I have looked through dozens of questions here. I'm about to try booting Ubuntu from a stick and seeing if the xorg-edgers drivers might help. When booting, all action goes down on the very screen I'm trying to get to work.*EDIT never mind this. Seems to be special boot magic. As the screen only displays whiteline errors once the gui of ubuntu has kicked in and everything graphic is happening through my graphics card again. Connected through HDMI(motherboard)-DVI. So unless having multiple displays is a huge deal the solution hopefully isn't that complicated. I just feel I'm missing something simple. If this really is complicated, I should probably just hook up the display to my graphics card. My CPU is usually the one chilling out though so I'd like to try to get that to work. Also just because I don't want to buy an extra cable and this set up makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Tell me what to try or look up, I'll be most appreciative. Thank you! **UPDATE The x-swat ppa installed some intel stuff. Booting with one monitor plugged into the motherboard gives nothing. Doing it with the pc already on gives the purple "Ubuntu" with 5 dots boot/shutdown screen.

How to build a "traffic AI"?

A project I am working on right now features a lot of "traffic" in the sense of cars moving along roads, aircraft moving aroun an apron etc. As of now the available paths are precalculated, so nodes are generated automatically for crossings which themselves are interconnected by edges. When a character/agent spawns into the world it starts at some node and finds a path to a target node by means of a simply A* algorithm. The agent follows the path and ultimately reaches its destination. No problem so far. Now I need to enable the agents to avoid collisions and to handle complex traffic situations. Since I'm new to the field of AI I looked up several papers/articles on steering behavior but found them to be too low-level. My problem consists less of the actual collision avoidance (which is rather simple in this case because the agents follow strictly defined paths) but of situations like one agent leaving a dead-end while another one wants to enter exactly the same one. Or two agents meeting at a bottleneck which only allows one agent to pass at a time but both need to pass it (according to the optimal route found before) and they need to find a way to let the other one pass first. So basically the main aspect of the problem would be predicting traffic movement to avoid dead-locks. Difficult to describe, but I guess you get what I mean. Do you have any recommendations for me on where to start looking? Any papers, sample projects or similar things that could get me started? I appreciate your help!

Git push on localhost with htaccess

I am looking into setting up a remote git repo. To start with I have created it on my Windows machine using xampp following this guide. All works fine except when I try to add some security, as per step 6 of the guide (for when I migrate it to my main web server). I have added passwords by using passwd and adding htaccess to the htdocs folder. This works fine (I have checked in my web browser), but when I try and push I get prompted for my password the it fails with a error (code 22). $ git push origin master Password for 'http://git@localhost': error: Cannot access URL http://git@localhost/s.git/, return code 22 fatal: git-http-push failed Any ideas?

Turning a (dual boot) Ubuntu 9 into a virtual machine

I have a dual boot box (Ubuntu 9 and Vista) and I'm about to upgrade Vista to Win 7. Being Ubuntu my main development environment, I'd like to use it as it is from the new environment via VirtualBox or VMWare. I know tools like clonezilla that backup entire drives; in my case, the linux partitions are distributed between several disks which in turn contain both linux and windows data. My intention is to use some backup tool (like Clonezilla if it fits) that allows me to ONLY backup the linux partitions distributed in several disks. Any hints ? Thanks in advance.

Good resources for learning modern OpenGL (3.0 or later)?

I stumble upon the search of a good resource to start with OpenGL (3.0 or later) . Well, I found a lot of books but none of them can be considered a good resource! Here two examples: OpenGL Programming Guide (7th edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321552628/khongrou-20 This is FULL of deprecated material! Almost every chapters begin with a note about that. OpenGL Superbible (5th Edition) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0321712617/khongrou-20 This book uses a library created by the author to explain the main arguments, hiding what you want to learn! I don't want to learn how to use your library! I want to learn OpenGL! I hope that you understand this is not the same question like "hey I'm not able to use Google... tell me how to learn OpenGL". I've just finished a full and deep search but I can't find a good and complete resource to learn the "new" OpenGL avoiding deprecated topics. Can someone heading me in the right direction? I know C++ and I have 10 years of experience in development... where I can find a good resource?! I want to spend time on it and I want to learn deeply. (please feel free to edit my question, my English is terrible!)
