• Google displaying swf menu in SiteLinks

  I have a website that uses a Flash based menu as its main navigation. A plain HTML fallback version is "lying underneath", the swf is embedded using swfobject. swfobject.embedSWF('MENU.swf', 'menu', '1000', '600', '8.0.0', 'ext/expressInstall.swf', {}, {wmode:'transparent',bgcolor:'#666666'}, {}); Somehow Google now started displaying a link to the swf-file in the SiteLinks (noting [SWF] beforehand) which is pretty ugly as the Flash content gets all scrambled and all you see is a random string of characters and numbers (it looks "hacked" to me, although I do know it is not). Also, the link to the swf is plain useless as it relies on JavaScript-functions in the HTML-document. I already demoted the swf in the Webmaster Tools, yet in some situations the link will still show up. Is anyone aware of this problem (I haven't found too much on this on the Internet) and knows how I can keep the search results from linking to the swf?

• MacBook Pro (5) touchpad stops working after upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04

  After upgrading from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 11.04, my MacBook Pro's touchpad stopped working. It works fine on the login screen, but after logging in it stops working. (Answering my own question, in the hope that it saves someone else a bit of head scratching. I'm a new user, so couldn't answer in a separate post for the next few hours). After the upgrade, your Gnome desktop configuration may have gone awry. There are a few settings which enable or disable the touchpad in certain contexts which may need tweaking to get the touchpad working again. Here's how I got mine working again: Hit Alt-F2, and run 'gconf-editor' Navigate to desktop-gnome-peripherals Ensure that peripherals-touchpad:touchpad is enabled. Ensure that peripherals-bcm5974:disable_while_other_device_exists is disabled. 'bcm5974' is probably specific to my MacBook Pro's hardware, so you may need to search around for variable disable_while_other_device_exists under the entries listed under peripherals. HTH

• What's the difference between MCSD and MCPD?

  I am looking on the website but the difference between the two isn't explained. To complicate matters a Google search tells me that developers should focus on the MCPD qualifications but an examination of the MCPD section of the site is telling me that the Web Application exams will expire in July 2013! It seems out of date. Meanwhile the MCSD exam seems to be a lot more up to date with references to HTML5/ASP.net 4.5 MVC applications! What's the difference. Are the MCPD going to be updated after July? Thanks

• How does hreflang interact with geo targeting?

  If I have multiple subfolders that I wish to target at different countries, I'm thinking the ideal set up would be to specify rel="alternative" hreflang with a language AND country code (e.g. en-AU) and ALSO to geotarget that subfolder to the particular country. That way, the pages would be showing up both in the country-specific results (accessed via Search Tools) because of hreflang, AND the more generic country results from regular searches, because of geotargeting. Is this correct? p.s. What would happen if you geotargeted a subfolder which had e.g. pt-BR hreflang value (i.e. Portuguese-Brazil) to just Portugal?

• FormatDate in Display Item Form Webpart

  I've faced an issue that I wanted to display the date in the format of ('MMMM dd') that is retrieved from a sharepoint list in an arabic site collection. So, after googling this issue, I've found out that a possible solution to my poblem is using the function ddwrt:FormatDateTime that can be used as long as you'll include the following namespace xmlns:ddwrt="http://schemas.microsoft.com/WebParts/v2/DataView/runtime" My purpose was solved by writing this line of code in my xsl code behind for the webpart : ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@StartDate),3073,'MMMM dd') but that worked only if the webpart is inserted into an English site . After trying to search but in vain, I started to use my guesses that ended up doing something like that: ddwrt:FormatDateTime(ddwrt:FormatDateTime(string(@StartDate),3073,'dd/MM/yyyy'), 3073, 'MMMM dd') And the cause of the problem was that sharepoint parses the date as 'MM/dd/yyyy' which I think could be related to server regional settings, so I had to force it to parse the date in arabic-Egypt format as 'dd/MM/yyyy' in order to get the correct 'Month Day' format as expected.

• Ubuntu slow on HP 2000 notebook with Apu e1-1200

  I am using HP 2000 notebook which initially came with Windows 7 64bit. It has 4gb ram, AMD APU E1-1200 (1.4ghz) with Radeon 7310. With Windows it worked ok, so I decided to switch to Ubuntu. I installed 13.04 64bit at first, but responsiveness wasn't that good (opening windows, menus, Firefox, dash search) even if it was way better during the testing from live USB. I tried different kind of drivers for graphic card, 13.6beta, 13.4, fgrlx proprietary, upgraded kernel but the situation was the same. Then I tried installing 32bit version but the results were identical. After that I tried LTS version 12.04 and Xubuntu 13.04.. Responsiveness wasn't that different at all. Not sure what to do, and I wouldn't want to go back to Windows. This machine is not a beast, but it should be enough to deal with Unity or Xfce without troubles.   I recently got a direct ad campaign for one of my sites. The advertiser agreed to my price without much bargaining. No contract was signed, but I had specified pre payment as part of our agreement. The advertiser is not a major network. Currently they are showing affiliate ads. Some things about this deal seems fishy to me - The amount was direct deposited to our account, not transferred from their company account. - Just below the visible ad, I can see a hidden iframe which contains the flight search widget for a major airline (Could this be cookie stuffing?) - They are contacting me from a gmail account - They did not insist for a signed contact How can I ensure that the advertiser is legitimate and is not using the adslot for illegal purpose?

• iOS: Versioned static frameworks vs Git Submodules and included code

  For the last couple of years I've been building static frameworks of common APIs for my iOS projects. I can build a universal binary containing all the architectures (i386, armv6, armv7) and wrap it up in a .framework directory structure. I then stored this in a directory based on the version of the framework. For example ..../myAPI/v0.1.0/myAPI.framework Once I have this framework I can then easily add it to a project and if I want to advance the version, merely change the framework search paths to the later version. This works, but the approach is very similar to what I would use in the Java world. Recently I've been reading about using Git submodules and static framework sub projects in XCode 4. Im wondering if my currently approach is something that I should consider retiring and what the pros/cons are of the new approach. I'm weary of just including code because I've already had issues in a work project which had (effectively) multiple versions of a third party API. Any opinions?

• Using EPEL repos with Oracle Linux

  There's a Fedora project called EPEL which hosts a set of additional packages that can be installed on top of various distributions such as Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS, Scientific Linux and of course also Oracle Linux. These packages are not distributed by the distribution vendor and as such also not supported by the vendors (including Oracle) however for users that want to pick up some extras that are useful, it's very easy to do this. • 301 Redirects for regional variants of a homepage

  I am planning on implementing a website which has regional homepage variants. For Example: mycompany.com/europe mycompany.com/us The rest of the site is region agnostic and content will continue such as: mycompany.com/news mycompany.com/about-us etc For homepage (.com) requests, I plan on redirecting users to the correct homepage variant (via 301). If I cannot determine the correct one, I will fallback to redirecting them to the US homepage (/us). From an SEO point of view, firstly is this ok? or should I be doing anything additional to this for making search engines aware of the regional differences? As crawlers are region agnostic, I plan on directing them to the US page with a 301, or should I have something on the .com page which they use? Being that the regional homepage's will likely be the most visited pages, they should show up in result sitelinks when searching for mycompany (which I think is a good thing). Apologies for the slightly open question - I know anything SEO related is more opinion/best practice than fact but am purely looking for advice.

But then I have this link: www.site.com/category/big-cars Here are the BIG cars TITLE: A Big green car INTRO: this is a great big green car. So essentially - for every item of content, header and the intro sentence is the same regardless of the category the item appears in. Will a search engine penalise the site for having the same content in this way? I've looked at canonical links, but I don't think this is relevant here. All my content points to the same page - but the content may appear in multiple categories first. Or am I worrying about nothing? Thanks.

• Gnome shell crashing in 11.10 with 'purple haze' effect

  I've just got Gnome with 11.10 up and running with my netbook and liked it so much I thought I'd get my parents old machine sorted with Ubuntu too. Unity works fine but when I try to switch to Gnome shell, I get problems. On login, the wallpaper appears as normal but then the colour bleeds out from the centre, leaving traces of it around the edge in a purple haze (yes, I do like Jimi Hendrix but I'm not making this up). When I go to applications, typing then pressing enter in the search field dumps me out so there's nothing but File / Edit / View etc in top left; starting a program seems to work but then there's only a white screen and no program window. Gnome classic works fine, from the limited use I've given it. I'm using an Asus desktop with ABIT motherboard, 2.6ghz with 1gb RAM; I've checked drivers and it says I'm up to date, Nvidia graphics. Anyone any ideas?

  I just installed MyGeneration 1.3.1 on my Windows Vista, and when I try to setup the default settings there are no drivers to select from. but it's OK in my Windows XP machine. At last I got the answers from search engine, it is caused by multi .Net Frameworks coexist and MyMeta.dll is registered by the .Net v2.0 while it should be registered with the .Net v4.0. So we have to manually register the dll. Please follow these steps: 1. Run Visual Studio Command Prompt (2010) with "Run as Administrator". 2. Enter the command "regasm.exe "C:\Program Files\MyGeneration13\MyMeta.dll" /tlb: MyMeta.tlb" 3. Exit Command Prompt when successfully registered. 4. • Serious Forum Design Issue

  I want to launch a school forum for a country. I'm in dilemma as to how to design this forum. Country will have many states, each state will have cities, each city will have many schools. Each school will have many classes( 1st - 12th). It looks like this: States - Cities - Schools - Classes I want to make each class as forum. Now the biggest problems are two fold: If I were to list even 1000 schools it will create huge number of forums and I don't think forum softwares(PHPBB, MyBB) are designed to support these many Secondly creating and maintaining huge forums is also very difficult. Ideally I'd like to duplicate existing forum hierarchy to new one. I've done lot of search and I've found that such type of forums are infeasible and such designs don't work. Leave alone the fact the nobody uses such a forum. Keeping in mind this, how should I go about designing this forum?
