  hi I am right now on Windows 7 alongwith a newly bought Dell Laptop .I want to install Linux too . I have been using Ubuntu 10.10 before . now I want to try a different flavour in Linux which has a good audio/video options & is security enhanced . Right now I have the following distributions : Ubuntu 10.10 OpenSuse 11.0 Fedora 13 . among the three mentioned above which might be the best to learn out things n get more close to linux .I am a student & eager to learn a lot of new things .... so which of the above would be the best for me ?

• Control Windows 8 with a tablet

  It seems much of Windows 8 is based on the idea that it will be running on tablets, and touch screen PCs. I like this, but I don't have a W89 tablet, or a touch PC yet. I'm running W8 on a laptop, and am wondering if there's any way of using my iPad2 as a touch interface with metro? Or another options that'd be nice is if there's a input device similar to Apple's "Magic Trackpad" that would allow me to use hand gestures instead of a mouse cursor when in metro apps. I've seen some cool videos of MS Smart Glass and it would seem that the capabilities are there. But it may just be too early on to do this? I'm not sure.

• Why does Excel 2010 automatically reformat numbers?

  Excel 2010 is automatically reformatting numbers/cells where a specific number format has already been applied. Whenever I access or modify the cell contents, Excel reformats by changing the number of decimal places to 2. I've already gone into file \ options \ advanced \ and made sure that the option to automatically add decimal places is unselected, but Excel still automatically makes the change. Very time consuming to continue reselecting number formats each time the cell contents are changed/accessed. Any ideas? Thx!

• New Kingson SSD drive fails after 1 week

  I upgraded the hard disk in my notebook to a 128GB Kingston SSD V100. Everything worked fine for about a week then out of the blue the notebook would not boot up any more. A black dos-like screen was shown with the options to try and boot normally or attempt to repair windows. Neither option would do anything. When I removed the drive and tested it in an external usb case no other computers are able to access the drive either. Is there anything I can try to fix it myself? The drive is partitioned into three drives and when it's connected through an external usb case to another computer I can see the partitions, just can't access anything on them. Does this mean the drive might be recoverable?

• Delete Ubuntu and Grub from PC (and BIOS unaccessible)

  I've really done a mess while upgrading 12.04 to 12.10, or my PC did, or ubuntu did, I can't really tell. The situation now is I have a dual booting machine, Windows 7 and ubuntu 12.10 -When turning on the PC, I can't access boot options, I've tried every thing, esc, f1 f8, f10 (I have a Hp pavilion) but all I can see is a short-lasting screen with three lines reading something like "error:files not found" or "link not found". So the PC turns to the Grub loader screen. This is already a BIG problem. It means I can't change boot order, and I'm diperate, since it doensn't seem that repairing my operating systems will bring my BIOS back. -If I chose Ubuntu in grup, it loades but then frezes on the desktop, I may be having problem with unity3d, or compiz, which was reported to be crashing the first times I started ubuntu. Now, after turning off and on the pc several times, no crash is reported again. Ubuntu just load my background image and nothing else. Not the side menu, not the header, nothing. Althogh the system seems "functioning", when I press the power button on the PC, for example, the normal shutdown dialog window appears. -If I chose Windows, Grubs tells me that something is not found, and to press any key to continue; I do it and then Windows loads perfectly. What I now want to do is 1- use EasyBSD to change boot order and boot Windows partition first 2- delete the ubuntu partitions from within windows disk manager What I except happening is that My PC turns to, or near to factory booting settings: I press the power button and Windows loads without asking me nothing I have acess to all my hardisk from withing windows Is that what will really happen? Are there danger I'm not seeing? What I don't except happening is The BIOS access key return functioning How could I eventually solve this? I would like to reinstall Ubuntu, 32 bit version this time.

• Best Linux distro for media server on older box

  I have an older machine with these specs: CPU: AMD Athlon X2 @ 2,8 Ghz, 2MB L2 RAM: 4 GB DDR2@ 800 Mhz GPU: Asus 4890 TOP 1 GB I want to turn the machine into a media server via XBMC (so good video and wireless peripherial driver support would also be a plus), but I also want to use it as an OpenVPN server so I can tunnel RDP to my other Windows machine in the network. I mostly want to use a Debian based distro (for the convenience of apt) and right now my options are: Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Mint. Which one do you think is more fitting? Thanks in advance.

• Growing your VirtualBox Virtual Disk

  Don't you just hate it when this happens: Fortunately, if you're running inside VirtualBox, you can resize your virtual disk and magically make your guest have a bigger disk very easily. There are 2 steps to doing this... 1. Resize the virtual disk Use the VBoxManage command line tool to extend the size of the Virtual Disk, specifying the path to the disk and the size in MB: VBoxManage modifyhd <uuid>|<filename> [--type normal|writethrough|immutable|shareable| readonly|multiattach] [--autoreset on|off] [--compact] [--resize <megabytes>|--resizebyte <bytes>]   If you booted up your guest at this point, the extra space is seen as an unformatted area on the disk, like this: So we now need to tell the guest about the extra space available. 2. Extend the guest's partition to use the extra space How you do this step depends on you guest OS type and the tools you have available. Linux guests often include the excellent gparted partition editor, whereas Windows 7 and 8 provide the Computer Management tool which can resize partitions. Unfortunately, my Windows XP vm has no such tool. But I do have a couple of other options: Most Linux installable .isos include the aforementioned gparted tool, so I could simply attach, say, an Ubuntu.iso as a Virtual CD/DVD in my Windows XP vm and boot off that. Then use gparted to extend the Windows XP partition, before finally rebooting. But I took another route and attached my resized virtual disk to a Windows Server 2012 vm I had lying around. Then I used the Computer Management tool in Windows Server 2012 to extend the partition of the Windows XP disk, before shutting down, unplugging the disk and reattaching to my Windows XP vm. (Note that if your vm's use different disk controllers, Windows will check the disks on booting). When I finally boot up my Windows XP guest I see the available disk space and all is well. • Enable wireless greyed out. Disabled by hard switch. Details inside

  Ok so the basic issue here is this: My wireless has not once enabled through many environments. Wubi install: Enable wireless greyed out Live cd: greyed out Partition alongside win7: greyed out. I installed all software updates, checked additional drivers, installed the latest driver for RTL8111/8168B. rfkill list shows phy0 and phy1. Phy0 has a hardblock on. everything else is unblocked. Now consider this also: I have both a wireless adapter inside my laptop and a wireless usb adapter outside. The internal adapter does not work, hence why I think hardblock is on even if the external slider in 'on'. I have tried commands such as rfkill unblock all as well as sudo rfkill unblock all. No wireless options in the BIOS. I have tried another laptop and desktop and they get wireless from the get go. Ubuntu on my laptop seems to see my belkin adapter as well as my internal (ralink) one. But trying to scan networks yields no results and says network is down always. Ubuntu version: 12.04 lts Ask me anything else you may need to help me, thanks.

• Windows API Error 2 when installing MikTex (Win7)

  I am trying to install MikTex 2.9.3927 on Windows 7 x64. Very early in the installation process, I get a MikTex setup wizard error saying: "Windows API Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified Details: C:...\somefile.tpm" The file that results in the error seems to be different every time I try. I have tried many different installation paths, with many different setup options. The same error occurs if I download the ~138MB "Basic MiKTeX 2.9" Installer or if I use the Net Installer to download the entire setup (~1GB). Note that this is a duplicate question - the other copy of this question is closed to users of under 10 rep. I have asked it so that I can provide an updated answer...

• Move database from SQL 7 to 2005 / 2008

  I have several pretty large databases located in a SQL Server 7 box. Whats the best way to get them into SQL Server 2008? As far as I know, there were changes to the underlying file structures so I am not sure that a simple detach/attach would work. When I tried attaching from 2008 it complained strongly. "Version no longer supported" etc etc. What options do I have? Are there any tools on the market that can connect to both 7 and 2008 and then move the schema and data?

• Hosting ESXI (free edition) [closed]

  We currently have one physical server running the free version of VMWare ESXi that virtualizes a Win SBS 2003 server and a Citrix server. We need to collocate the server and are investigating our options. Are there places that will host our virtual servers and save us the expense of shipping the physical server out for collocation. In my mind we'd copy the Vms to disk and ship them out. Does the fact that we're using the free version of ESXi create a barrier to this idea? Thanks for the help, I realize this is a stupid question.

• What language and tools can I use to create a simple game with child-lock (capture all key press) for Windows? [closed]

  I'm writing an open source program that changes colors & plays sounds when keys are pressed. I want it to run in full screen mode and have a child-lock so kids can't exit accidentally. I want it to capture all keys including ctrl alt delete. (So it's partially a game, but partially windows utility.) My target OS is Windows 7 (32 & 64 bit), keeping Windows 8 in mind. My options: Visual Studio using .net C# Windows Forms - the devil I know. But not a "game" platform, which is why I'm asking this question. Visual Studio & XNA - have never used XNA, not sure of capabilities or support future Python - What flavor, what modules, what IDE? I've never done anything with Python but I found a couple of similar open source projects in python. Something else that I don't know about? Any input is appreciated.

• What is a good alternative to the WPF WebBrowser Control?

  I have an MDI WPF app that I need to add web content to. At first, great it looks like I have 2 options built into the framework the Frame control and the WebBrowser control. Given that this is an MDI app it doesn't take long to discover that neither of these will work. The WPF WebBrowser control wraps up the IE WebBrowser ActiveX Control which uses the Win32 graphics pipeline. The "Airspace" issue pretty much sums this up as "Sorry, the layouts will not play nice together". Yes, I have thought about taking snapshots of the web content rendering these and mapping the mouse and keyboard events back to the browser control, but I can't afford the performance penalty and I really don't have time to write and thoroughly test it. I have looked for third party controls, but so far I have only found Chris Cavanagh's WPF Chromium Web Browser control. Which wraps up Awesomium 1.5. Together these are very cool, they play nice with the WPF layouts. But they do not meet my performance requirements. They are VERY HEAVY on memory consumption and not to friendly with CPU usage either. Not to mention still quite buggy. I'll elaborate if you are interested. So, do any of you know of a stable performant WPF web browser control? Thanks.

  Hi, I am writing a simple motion detection program but i want it to be cross platform so im using python and the pyglet library since it provides a simple way to load videos in different formats (specially wmv and mpeg). So far i have the code given below which loads the movie and plays it in a window. • WPF application with MS Access database as a data source

  I have a Microsoft Access 2010 database. Now, using Visual Studio 2010, I want to create a WPF application and add the database as a data source. The app will have a window with a frame that provides navigation through pages. No problem so far. But: -What is the right way to set up the database in this scenario? Tables only? Or must everything go via queries? (VS2010 talks about views which I assume (?) are queries) -Database data must be updatable and records can be added. Some relationships go through link tables (many-to-many) and there are nullable foreign key relationships. Must I take manual steps to make it work? -While adding the data source VS2010 created an xsd from my Access database. I think the xsd might need further tweaking for the application to work the right way. What if I change my Access database design, I'd have to regenerate the xsd again as well. Is this right, and is it the way it is usually done? OR, should I let the original Access database go and give the application the capability to create new empty databases? -How do you provide controls in a page to step through the records in a table? Is there a special database control? -What is the way (WPF class?) to load records into the data context that displays in a page? (At this level it probably does not matter what type of data source it is.)

  I am on centos5. I installed python26 source with a make altinstall. Then I did a: yum install qt4 yum install qt4-devel yum install qt4-doc From riverbankcomputing.co.uk I downloaded the source for sip 4.10.2, compiled and installed fine. Then from the same site I downloaded and compiled from source PyQt-x11-4.7.3 Both installs were using the python26 version (/usr/local/bin/python2.6). So configure.py, make, and make install worked with no errors. • XNA vs SlimDX for offscreen renderer

  Hello, I realise there are numerous questions on here asking about choosing between XNA and SlimDX, but these all relate to game programming. A little background: I have an application that renders scenes from XML descriptions. Currently I am using WPF 3D and this mostly works, except that WPF has no way to render scenes offscreen (i.e. on a server, without displaying them in a window), and also rendering to a bitmap causes WPF to fallback to software rendering. So I'm faced with having to write my own renderer. Here are the requirements: Mix of 3D and 2D elements. Relatively few elements per scene (tens of meshes, tens of 2D elements). Large scenes (up to 3000px square for print). Only a single frame will be rendered (i.e. FPS is not an issue). Opacity masks. Pixel shaders. Software fallback (servers may or may not have a decent gfx card). Possibility of being rendered offscreen. As you can see it's pretty simple stuff and WPF can manage it quite nicely except for the not-being-able-to-export-the-scene problem. In particular I don't need many of the things usually needed in game development. So bearing that in mind, would you choose XNA or SlimDX? The non-rendering portion of the code is already written in C#, so want to stick with that.

• iPhone UIScrollview with UIButtons - how to recreate springboard?

  I'm trying to create a springboard-like interface within my app. I'm trying to use UIButtons added to a UIScrollView. The problem I'm running in to is with the buttons not passing any touches to the UIScrollView - if I try to flick/slide and happen to press on the button it doesn't register for the UIScrollView, but if I flick the space between buttons it will work. The buttons do click/work if I touch them. Is there a property or setting that forces the button to send the touch events up to its parent (superview)? Do the buttons need to be added to something else before being added the UIScrollView?
