I want to setup another Hyper-V VM for installing Matlabs/doing some compute-intensive programming using C.
I keep thinking that Windows Server HPC 2008 is designed for this sort of work. Would I be on the right track to setup a single VM with this OS and install this software? Or is HPC more for grid/distributed computing?
Thanks
Hello.
There is a broken kernel module, due to which I can not even load the OS, so I can not delete or fix it. Is it possible to skip this module at boot, using the kernel's parameters or something?
Thanks.
I am getting some error messages on my Windows Mobile Device(v6.1). How can I capture the Error Screen-shots on Windows Mobile? I am looking something like Print-Screen option in regular Desktop Windows OS.
I need a cheap netbook for "router" functions. [OpenBSD/Scientific Linux/whatever will be on it on OS level]. So once I configure it I will put it somewhere down for YEARS.
The Question is: What is the lifespan difference of the netbook if it will be [for years]:
with opened lid
with closed lid
I don't think there will be heat problems, because netbooks doesn't produce too much heat. But will ex.: a closed lid [for years] decrease the lifespan of a netbook?
In Os X, I can hold Shift while using the scroll wheel on the mouse to scroll horizontally instead of vertically. Is there a way to do something similar in Windows?
Just recently while listening to radio 1 online, the sound quality has become horrible, sounds all crackly and underwater. I've tried reinstalling Flash, and radios 2/3/4 sound fine.
It almost sounds like there are two playing at once.
When I listen to it through a WMA stream (Flip4Mac), it's fine. Any ideas?

I've installed Windows Server 2008 and i need to share the wireless network.

Thank you.

Is it the possible to connect to a wireless network in a virtual machine, but keep the host os disconnected?
[useful in places where wi-fi is free]
Somehow I ended up with a file named "-r". How do I remove it? rm -r doesn't work. I tried 'rm -i `ls -a`' to step through the file names, but it didn't prompt me to delete this one.
Edit A very hacky approach was to use python's os.unlink function. That worked, but I'm curious to hear other ways.
Here's my setup:
I have a local server running on my machine (Mac OS, Snow Leopard). I can access it via my browser by doing
localhost:3000
I have a virtual machine using Virtual Box running a windows XP. If I try to access using localhost:3000, it fails. Same thing if I use the ip of the Mac machine.
The virtual machine has access to the internet.
How can I access my local server in my virtual machine?
I have a 1300 page PDF file of a scanned book that was unfortunately not cropped when scanned. The actual book page dimensions are around 6x9", but each scanned page is 8.5x11", the size of the scanner bed.
For much smaller PDF files I could throw it into Photoshop and crop the page, but this is a huge file. What is the best way to losslessly crop all of the pages of the file, in either Windows or OS X?
I have XPS9100 DELL desktop computer awakes out of the sleep mode without me prompting it.

We have a server that has been occasionally kernel panicking for a while now that we believe has a hardware problem. How would you go about troubleshooting hardware that you don't have physical access to? Are there any tools that I can use within the OS itself to diagnose different pieces of the system to try to figure out what's causing all of this panicking?
I installed Centos 5 OS and didn't setup any user password at that point but when boot up machine its looking for a username & password. default username is root I am sure doesa anyone knows default password for it.
I have a old Laptop Dell Latitude D430 that I just upgraded to Windows 8. The Ram that I have installed is 2GB (Max Ram that this laptop can handle) but I am wondering if by installing windows 8 can help also to increase the cap of the total Ram that the laptop can handle.
I know that some laptops have a cap of RAM by the Bios but I am wondering if any of you know if by installing a new OS can actually change this?
thanks,
Robert
Video is less than 5 minutes long, standard 4:3 aspect ratio (@ 640x480), imported from a digital camera, edited in Mac OS X with iMovie '09 and has a stereo, musical soundtrack.
What encoding method should I use to get the best quality possible when played back on YouTube?
Is it possible for me to share my internet connection from a Vista OS Laptop to a Linux server desktop, and still connect to the server from the laptop?
The server box does not have a wireless card and I am trying to avoid tripping people with my Ethernet.
Also, the laptop connects via wireless.
What roles do the Xorg server and a window manager, for example, metacity, play in displaying windows? Does the window manager communicate with the OS or Xorg? Does Xorg then use OpenGl to display things? Can someone explain what exactly the Xorg server does, and what exactly the window manager does, and the differences between the two. Also, if you could show me the Windows equivalent, that would be helpful. Thanks in advance, ell.
We are setting up a new database system and have 15 drives to play with (+2 on-board for the OS).
With a total of 15 drives would it be better to setup all 14 as one RAID-10 block (+1 hot spare) OR split into two RAID-10 sets one for Data (8 disks) and one for logs/backups (6 disks).
My question boils down to the following: is there a specific point where having more drives in a RAID-10 setup will out preform having the drives broken into smaller RAID-10 sets.

I am responsible for demonstrating changes to our software every two weeks. Since the software has both telnet and web interfaces, I think it would help the demo go more smoothly if I could embed a web browser and a telnet client or shell directly into presentation slides, like this:
My current idea is to write extensions for LibreOffice to do it, but obviously I don't want to reinvent the wheel if I can help it. Does anyone know of a way to accomplish this? I prefer PowerPoint 2007 or LibreOffice on Windows 7, but am open to suggestions for any software or OS.
