  If i have: public static Func<SomeType, bool> GetQuery() { return a => a.Foo=="Bar"; } and a generic version public static Func<T, bool> GetQuery<T>() { return (Func<T,bool>)GetQuery(); } how can I do the case? The only way I have found so far is to try and combine it with a mock function: Func<T, bool> q=a => true; return (Func<T, bool>)Delegate.Combine(GetQuery(), q); I know how to do that with Expression.Lambda, but I need to work with plain functions, not expression trees

• Build Environment setup - Using .net, java, hudson, and ruby - Could really use a critique

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to stitch together a fast, repeatable, unbreakable build process for the following environment. I've got a plan for how to do it, but I'd really appreciate a critique. (I'd also appreciate some sample code, but more on that later) Ecosystem - Logical: Website - asp.net MVC 2, .net 3.5, Visual Studio 2010. IIS 6, Facebook iframe application application. This website/facebook app uses a few services. An internal search api, an internal read/write api, facebook, and an IP geolocation service. More details on these below Internal search api - .net, restful, built using old school .ashx handlers. The api uses lucene, and a sql server database behind the scenes. My project won't touch the lucene code, but does potentially touch the database and the web services. internal read/write api - java, restful, running on Tomcat Facebook web services A mocking site that emulates the internal read/write api, and parts of the facebook api Hudson - Runs unit tests on checkin, and creates some installers that behave inconsistently. Ecosystem - Physical: All of these machines can talk to one another, except for Hudson. Hudson can't see any of the target machines. So code must be pulled, rather than pushed. (Security thing) 1. Web Server - Holds the website, and the read/write api. (The api itself writes to a replicated sql server environment). 2. Search Server - Houses the search api. 3. Hudson Server - Does not have permissions to push to any environment. They have to pull. 4. Lucene Server 5. Database Server Problem I've been trying to set this site up to run in a stress environment, but the number of setup steps, the amount of time it takes to update a component, the black-box nature of the current installers, and the time it takes to generate data into the test system is absolutely destroying my productivity. I tweak one setting, have to redeploy, restart in a certain order, resetup some of the settings, and rebuild test data. Errors result in headscratching, and then basically starting over. Very bad. This problem is complicated further by my stress testing. I need to be able to turn on and off different external components, so that I can effectively determine the scalability of each piece. I've got strategies in place for how to do that for each dependency, but it further complicates my setup strategy, because now each component has 2 options. A mock version, or a real version. Configurations everywhere must be updated accordingly. Goals Fast - I want to drop this from a 20 minute exercise when things go perfectly, to a 3 minute one Stupid simple - I want to tell the environment what to do with as few commands as possible, and not have to remember how to stitch the environments together Repeatable - I want the script to be idempotent. Kind of a corollary to the Stupid Simple thing. The Plan So Far Here's what I've come up with so far, and what I've come looking for feedback on: Use VisualStudio's new web.config transformations to permit easily altering configs based on envrionment. This solution isn't really sufficient though. I will leave web.config set up to let the site run locally, but when deploying elsewhere, I have as many as 6 different possible outputs for the stress environment alone (because of the mocks of the various dependencies), let alone the settings for prod, QA, and dev. Each of these would then require it's own setup, or a setup that would then post-process the configs. So I'm currently leaning toward just having the dev version, and a version that converts key configuration values into a ruby string interpolation syntax. ({#VAR_NAME} kinda thing) Create a ruby script for each server that is essentially a bootstrapping script. That is to say, it will do nothing but load the ruby code that does the 'real' work from hudson/subversion, so that the script's functionality can evolve with the application, making it easy to build the site at any point in time by reference the appropriate version of the script. So in a nutshell, this script loads another script, and runs it. The 'real' ruby script will then accept commandline parameters that describe how the environment should look. From there, 1 configuration file can be used, and ruby will download the current installers, run them, post-process the configs, restart IIS/Tomcat, and kick off any data setup code that is needed. So that's it. I'm in a real time crunch to get this site stress-tested, so any feedback that you think could abbreviate the time this might take would be appreciated. That includes a shameless request for sample ruby code. I've not gotten too much further than puts "Hello World". :-) Just guidance would be helpful. Is this something that Rake would be useful for? How would you recommend I write tests for this animal? (I use interfaces and automocking frameworks to mock out things like http requests in .net. With ducktyping, it seems that this might be easier, but I don't know how to tell my code to use a fake duck in test, but a real one in practice) Thanks all. • ASP.NET MVC TDD with LINQ and SQL database

  I am trying to start a new MVC project with tests and I thought the best way to go would have 2 databases. 1 for testing against and 1 for when I run the app and use it (also test really as it's not production yet). For the test database I was thinking of putting create table scripts and fill data scripts within the test setup method and then deleting all this in the tear down method. I am going to be using Linq to SQL though and I don't think that will allow me to do this? Will I have to just go the ADO route if I want to do it this way? Or should I just use a mock object and store data as an array or something?. Any tips on best practices? How did Jeff go about doing this for StackOveflow?

  Is there any way at all to create a "mock" entity type for use in a WCF Service Operation? We have some queries we do that we need to optimize by exposing as a ServiceOperation. The problem is in order to do so we would result in a very long list of primitative types... Ex SomeoneHelpMe(int time, string name, string address, string i, string purple, string foo, int stillGoing, int tooMany, etc...) And we really need to reduce this to SomeoneHelpedMe(CustomEntityNotMappedToAnything e) This would also help us when it comes time to write some complex queries since there is a 3 param limitation... I saw this will be possible in 4.0 using "complex types", but i am still in the 3.5SP1 world. Let me know if anyone needs more information.

  The reason I want to load modules dynamically is to avoid circular dependency issue. I have following layers View -- ViewModel -- DataProvider -- ServiceClient (wcf proxies). Now I want a static IoC container that can be shared across these layers. I want to make my View testable and to do that I’ll have to inject the various dependencies in various layers and mock out those dependencies as well. Now issue I am facing is where to declare and load ninject modules. i also realised in Silverlight version of Ninject there is no version of Load which take string arugment, which can be used to load the modules dynamically Load("*.dll").   General approach in GWT is to use Panels and then apply custom CSS themes to get a customized look. While I can achieve a certain extent of personalization of my GWT app through CSS tinkering, I was wondering how others generally approach styling. Some of the suggestions I came across the web were to manage layout with plain HTML, through use of HTMLPanel's. This way one can straightaway use the HTML mock-up within the application without having to code all the layout. So what in your opinion is the best and least painful way to approach layout and custom styling of GWT application?

• Have you been in cases where TDD increased development time?

  Hello everyone :) I was reading http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2512504/tdd-how-to-start-really-thinking-tdd and I noticed many of the answers indicate that tests + application should take less time than just writing the application. In my experience, this is not true. My problem though is that some 90% of the code I write has a TON of operating system calls. The time spent to actually mock these up takes much longer than just writing the code in the first place. Sometimes 4 or 5 times as long to write the test as to write the actual code. I'm curious if there are other developers in this kind of a scenario.

  I've searched for a while, but I can't find anything related on Google or here. Me and some friends were debating starting a company, so I figure it might be good to do a quick pilot project to see how well we can work together. We have a designer who can do HTML, CSS and Flash, enjoys doing art, but doesn't like to do HTML and CSS... And 2 programmers that are willing to do anything. My question is, from an experienced site builder's perspective, what steps do we do - in chronological order - to properly handle a website? Does the designer design the look and feel of the site, then the programmers fill in the gaps with functionality? Or do the programmers create a "mock-up" of the site with most of the functionality, then the designer spices it up? Or is it more of a back-and-forth process? I just want to know how a professional normally handles it.

  I am using Struts 2.1.8 and facing validation problem in IE. I am getting the following error An exception occurred: Error. Error message: Invalid argument. I tried out to figure out the cause and found the following. My generated javascript code is: field = form.elements['district.name']; var error = "Enter only alphabets for district"; if (continueValidation && field.value != null && !field.value.match("^[a-zA-Z ]*$")) { addError(field, error); errors = true; } I tried to mock up by putting the same code in a function and calling it in onclick event. The method addError() throws the exception and the reason is field variable. If I change it to field[0], it works fine. How to fix this error?

Therefore when my method under test adds an event handler to _mockedService.ServiceHandler.OnMessageReceived, I get an 'Object reference not set' error. How can I ensure that ServiceHandler is assigned a value in the mocked IService instance? This is likely Rhino Mocks 101, but I'm just getting up to speed on it...

• strerror_r returns trash when I manually set errno during testing

  During testing I have a mock object which sets errno = ETIMEDOUT; The object I'm testing sees the error and calls strerror_r to get back an error string: if (ret) { if (ret == EAI_SYSTEM) { char err[128]; strerror_r(errno, err, 128); err_string.assign(err); } else { err_string.assign(gai_strerror(ret)); } return ret; } I don't understand why strerror_r is returning trash. I even tried calling strerror_r(ETIMEDOUT, err, 128) directly and still got trash. I must be missing something. It seems I'm getting the gnu version of the function not the posix one, but that shouldn't make any difference in this case.

  This seems like an easy enough issue but I can't seem to find the keywords to effect my searches. I'm trying to unit test by mocking out all objects within this method call. I am able to do so to all of my own creations except for this one: public void MyFunc(MyVarClass myVar) { Image picture; ... picture = Image.FromStream(new MemoryStream(myVar.ImageStream)); ... } FromStream is a static call from the Image class (part of c#). So how can I refactor my code to mock this out because I really don't want to provide a image stream to the unit test.

Try specifying the type arguments explicitly' The delegate supplied to Where should take in an XElement and return a bool, marking if the item matches the query, I am not sure how to add anything more to the delegate or the where clause to mark the type. Also, the parallel method for the real function against the Entity Framework does not have this issue. What is not correct with the LINQ-to-XML version?

• What is the correct way to unit test areas around exceptions

  Hi, Looking at our code coverage of our unit tests we're quite high. But the last few % is tricky because a lot of them are catching things like database exceptions - which in normal circumstances just dont happen. For example the code prevents fields being too long etc, so the only possible database exceptions are if the DB is broken/down, or if the schema is changed under our feet. So is the only way to Mock the objects such that the exception can be thrown? That seems a little bit pointless. Perhaps it's better to just accept not getting 100% code coverage? Thanks, Dan

  I am on the lookout for a jQuery photo carousel that can display 3 images at a time, and circle through x amount of photos (and when reaching the last, starting with the first photo again). I made a quick mock-up of what i am looking fore - see it here. So there is 3 photos vissible, the middle one beeing the 'main' one and a bit bigger than the previous and next (left and right). Upon clicking the next/previous arrows the next or previous photo slides into the middle and thereby becomes the main photo. Any ideas to where i can find such a jQuery plugin/script?
