• Groovy: stub typed reference

  Hi, I have a Groovy class similar to class MyClass { Foo foo } Under certain circumstances I don't want to initialize foo and want to stub out all the calls to it. Any methods that return a value should do nothing. I could do it like this: Foo.metaClass.method1 = {param -> } Foo.metaClass.method2 = { -> } Foo.metaClass.method3 = {param1, param2 -> } While this will work, it has a couple of problems Tedious and long-winded, particularly if Foo has a lot of methods This will stub out calls to any instance of Foo (not just foo) Although Groovy provides a StubFor class, if I do this: this.foo = new groovy.mock.interceptor.StubFor(Foo) I get a ClassCastException at runtime. Although this would work if I could redefine foo as: def foo But for reasons I won't go into here, I can't do that. Thanks, Don

  I just watched this funny YouTube Video about unit testing (it's Hitler with fake subtitles chewing out his team for not doing good unit tests--skip it if you're humor impaired) where stubs get roundly criticized. But I don't understand what wrong with stubs. I haven't started using a mocking framework and I haven't started feeling the pain from not using one. Am I in for a world a hurt sometime down the line, having chosen handwritten stubs and fakes instead of mocks (like Rhinomock etc)? (using Fowler's taxonomy) What are the considerations for picking between a mock and handwritten stub?

  My current project uses JSON as data interchange format. Both Front-end and Back-end team agree upon a JSON structure before start integrating a service. At times due to un-notified changes in JSON structure by back-end team; it breaks the front-end code. Is there any external library that we could use to compare a mock JSON (fixture) with servers JSON response. Basically it should assert the whole JSON object and should throw an error if there is any violation in servers JSON format. Additional info: App is built on JQuery consuming REST JSON services.

• Wordpress Database SQL query help needed

  Hi, I've written a PHP script to access the latest item from the wordpress database, which it does. But I need to use it twice, once for the latest item from a specific category, and another from a differerent category... But right now I cannot figure out how to put the query together. The post has a post_parent, which in another table, called wp_term_relationships, is referred to as object_id, and has a term_taxonomy_id, which then relates to a different table, called wp_terms where the term_taxonomy_id is now term_id and then you have the category slug name available to select... I really cannot understand how this query would work though. I've made a really crap mock up of it, to try to "visually" explain what i'm trying to do... • suggestions for someone studying for java certification

  I have been working with java (J2EE) for about 4 years. I have been putting off the certification for a while now. I bought the exam last year and still have not taken the exam. it expires in june so I am going to give it a shot. I know certifications don't get jobs but interviews but where I work...certification will put a 'stamp' on my resume and I think it'll popout in the eyes of the management. Anyways, I am going for JAVA 6. Can someone suggest some good mock exams that are kind of new and relevant. I came across this link but most of these exams are fairly old. I am using kathy Sierra's book for studying. Any other resources/pointers?

• Multi-tab application (C#)

  Hi, I'm creating a multi-tabbed .NET application that allows the user to dynamically add and remove tabs at runtime. When a new tab is added, a control is added to it (as a child), in which the contents can be edited (eg. a text box). The user can perform tasks on the currently visible text box using a toolbar/menu bar. To better explain this, look at the picture below to see an example of what I want to accomplish. It's just a mock-up, so it doesn't actually work that way, but it shows what I want to get done. Essentially, like a multi-tabbed Notepad. • Database structure for storing Bank-like accounts and transactions

  We're in the process of adding a bank-like sub-system to our own shop. We already have customers, so each will be given a sort of account and transactions of some kind will be possible (adding to the account or subtracting from it). So we at least need the account entity, the transaction one and operations will then have to recalculate overall balances. How would you structure your database to handle this? Is there any standard bank system have to use that I could mock? By the way, we're on mysql but will also look at some nosql solution for performance boost.

  I'm trying to use rspec's mocking to setup expectations that I can verify in the it "should" methods... but I don't know how to do this... when i call the .should_receive methods on the mock, it verifies the expected call as soon as the before :all method exits. here's a small example: describe Foo, "when doing something" do before :all do Bar.should_recieve(:baz) foo = Foo.new foo.create_a_Bar_and_call_baz end it "should call the bar method" do # ??? what do i do here? end end How can i verify the expected call in the 'it "should"' method? do i need to use mocha or another mocking framework instead of rspec's? or ???

  Hi all. In an n-tier architecture, the best place to put an object-relational mapping (OR/M) code is in the data access layer. For example, database queries and updates can be delegated to a tool like NHibernate. Yet, I'd like to keep all references to NHibernate within the data access layer and abstract dependencies away from the layers below or above it. That way, I can swap or plug in another OR/M tool (e.g. Entity Framework) or some approach (e.g. plain vanilla stored procedure calls, mock objects) without causing compile-time errors or a major overhaul of the entire application. Testability is an added bonus. Could someone please suggest a wrapper (i.e. an interface or base class) or approach that would keep OR/M loosely coupled and contained in 1 layer? Or point me to resources that would help? Thanks.

Is it done in runtime or generates a file? How do you know its behavior? And most importantly - what is the work flow of using such a framework (what is the step-by-step for creating a test). Can anyone explain? You can choose whichever framework you like for example, just say what it is.

  This seems like an easy enough issue but I can't seem to find the keywords to effect my searches. I'm trying to unit test by mocking out all objects within this method call. I am able to do so to all of my own creations except for this one: public void MyFunc(MyVarClass myVar) { Image picture; ... picture = Image.FromStream(new MemoryStream(myVar.ImageStream)); ... } FromStream is a static call from the Image class (part of c#). So how can I refactor my code to mock this out because I really don't want to provide a image stream to the unit test.

  Is there any way to have a mock constructed instead of a real instance when testing code that calls a constructor? For example: public class ClassToTest { public void MethodToTest() { MyObject foo = new MyObject(); Console.WriteLine(foo.ToString()); } } In this example, I need to create a unit test that confirms that calling MethodToTest on an instance of ClassToTest will indeed output whatever the result of the ToString() method of a newly created instance of MyObject. I can't see a way of realistically testing the 'ClassToTest' class in isolation; testing this method would actually test the 'myObject.ToString()' method as well as the MethodToTest method.

• Firefox - Stashing Requests for Deliberate Resubmission to Django App

  I've got an object creation form that's somewhat complicated, it contains a few dynamic formsets etc. I'm trying to ensure that these dynamic formsets are intact if the form runs into an error and returns you to the given page. In cases like this, the refresh button actually works well in re-submitting the request, but I can't rely on it. I'm doing some ad-hoc testing in the browser that I'd like to make a bit more repeatable, and eventually move to a unit test using Django's mock client. Is there an extension, or some convenient method to stash requests for later re-submission. The goal: I resubmit the request, tweak the code, eyeball the results, rinse and repeat. Three days later I can come back to it an try it again to make sure it's still working. The closest thing I can think of in this case is simply recording my activity with Selenium ide and replaying it.

I know there are some standard mocks available in Spring, but I'd like to be able to mock out my own classes declaratively too. Just to check I'm not going about this the wrong way: the idea is to have a pair of JUnit test and Spring config for each integration test I want to do, mocking everything except the specific integration aspect I'm testing (say I had a dependency on two different data services, test one at a time) and minimising the amount of repeated Java code specifying the mocks.

Given the following: void execute(Foo f) { Bar b = new Bar() b.setId(123); f.setBar(b); } I'm trying to test that the Id of the Bar gets set accordingly in the following fashion: @Test void test_execute() { Foo f = EasyMock.createMock(Foo.class); execute(f); Bar b = ?; // not sure what to do here f.setBar(b); f.expectLastCall(); } In my test, I can't just call f.getBar() and inspect it's Id because f is a mock object. Any thoughts? Is this where I'd want to look at the EasyMock v2.5 additions andDelegateTo() and andStubDelegateTo()?

  Here's what I want to do. I want to present a file explorer, and allow the user to select files, and list the selected files below. (I then want to process those files but that's the next part) For example, the way CD Burning softwares work. What framework can I go about creating this? I am familiar with command line C++ stuff, but I haven't ventured into any GUI programming, and figured this idea would be a good place to start.   Hi, I want to test an "Adapter" object that when it receives an xml message, it digest it to a Message object, puts message ID + CorrelationID both with timestamps and forwards it to a Client object.=20 A message can be correlated to a previous one (e.g. m2.correlationID =3D m1.ID). I mock the Client, and check that Adapter successfully calls "client.forwardMessage(m)" twice with first message with null correlationID, and a second with a not-null correlationID. However, I would like to precisely test that the correlationIDs are set correctly, by grabing the IDs (e.g. m1.ID). But I couldn't find anyway to do so. There is a jira about adding the feature, but no one commented and it is unassigned. Is this really unimplemented? I read about the alternative of redesigning the Adapter to use an IdGenerator object, which I can stub, but I think there will be too many objects.=20 Don't you think it adds unnecessary complexity to split objects to a so fine granularity?   I am mocking a repository that should have 1 entity in it for the test scenario. The repository has to return this entity based on a known id and return nothing when other ids are passed in. I have tried doing something like this: _myRepository.Expect(item => item.Find(knownId)).Return(knownEntity); _myRepository.Expect(item => item.Find(Arg<Guid>.Is.Anything)).Return(null); It seems however the second line is overriding the first and the repository always returns null. I don't want to mock all the different possible IDs asked (they could go up to hundreds) when the test scenario is only concerned with the value of one Id.

  I'm trying to figure out the best way to make an image rotate along with a user's finger dragging it left or right. I want to try and match the rate a user's finger is moving with the rate the image is rotating. I've got the basic setup for my application going, with the menus and whatnot I want to have, and that's all running great on the emulator, I'm just not sure how to approach this part. I can code all the logic I need for my app, I'm just not doing to well designing the UI, I have a picture in mind, I've actually made a couple mock images of it, I just can't figure out how to get it going in Android, and any help would be appreciated.

  I am looking for a way to modify catch block depending on if it's executed during the unit test run or not. The purpose is basically to detect/setup mock expectations which are swallowed because catch doesn't rethrow. I am using MSTest. One obvious thing is using preprocessor but I don't think it works. Especially if to use DEBUG define. There should be an easy way to detect that, shouldn't it?
