• Windows PE network setup

  I'm walking through the following step-by-step guide for deploying Windows 7 via AIK: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd349348%28WS.10%29.aspx On step 4 (Capturing the Installation onto a Network Share), I run into a bit of a snag: attempting to connect to a network drive repeatedly fails. I'm using/deploying Dell Optiplex 380 64 bit machines, and the network cards seem to be really wonky. On the machine that I'm using to run AIK etc, the network driver wasn't found automatically. I had to manually go in and install the driver (which was found on the OEM installation media). I've since copied this to the USB key that I'm using for the Autounattend.xml so its handy. I think that because of this, the PE environment doesn't or can't instantiate the network device. Is there a way to install/configure the network device through the command prompt in PE? If not, I read about adding in the answer file path(s) to drivers, but if I did it this way, would I have to start the process all over again (i.e. create new Autounattend.xml with the PnPcustomizations path included, re-run the installation on the reference machine, install all the applications, re-make the PE iso, reboot into new PE iso)? Any shortcuts, direction, or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

• Windows 2008 64bit: applications and explorer always hang

  I setup a couple of Window 2008 64bit systems about 5 months ago. Initially all seemed well. Now however, for no apparent reason, things are dog slow, apps hang, explorer hangs, just clicking on something can cause a CPU spike of 100%, and often it's explorer that is eating it up. As I have two on identical hardware, and they experience the same problem, it doesn't seem related to addon software. The only thing these have in common is Kaspersky and I've tried disabling/uninstalling to no avail. There are no useful error messages in the event logs. Actually, the system never even reports app hangs. Sometimes, it similar to what I've seen on Windows 7 systems where the screen goes milky and asks if I want to trouble shoot, that's only when get impatient and click happy. The really odd thing, is that it will NOT do this for a few minutes at a time, and then starts up again. Like I will click on the start menu and browse for the Admin Tools, the start menu will hang at some point and I'll have to wait about a minute, then it's OK. The next time I do this, a few seconds later, it's fine. Every click seems to hang the first time around, then be ok the second time if I do the exact same thing. If anyone has any suggestions, please PLEASE let me know! thanks =)

• Windows Server 2008 (Web Server) Replication

  We have a load balanced environment with Windows Server 2008. What are some best practices to setting up replication across the web servers? Do I only want to replicate the web folders? How about replicating IIS changes - or do I need to make IIS changes on every server? I've never, ever set up replication, but I have worked with a web farm that used it before. Basically, I only know the basics about how it works, and am looking for any advice, guides, warnings, etc on setting this up. If you'd like to offer any advice, I'll let you know how our environment is for now. We have 1 prod server up and the second is nearly ready to go. We are using a cloud system and all machines are VM's. I am in the process of setting up the domain controller now (as I need to have one for DFS). Any ideas on the best way to go about setting up replication? Should we just stick the prod server in from the start or set up using a test VM and our second server and then switch it up later? I do not want to risk overwriting our prod server. Thanks!

• Black Screen on Logon (windows 7 home premium)

  i have been having some trouble with a dell Xps 15 laptop that i recently purchased. it is under a month old, and a problem has occurred, upon logging on just after start up, the computer will just sit on a black log on screen (with the mouse still visible and active) for a few minutes. it is extremely annoying, especially when im in a rush. the laptop is under a month old. So far, i have tried to update the drivers, all windows update, and still, nothing. also, it doesnt seem to do it when i log into safe mode, or if it does, it will do it for less than 10 seconds, then load the desktop (in normal boot, it usually takes a few minutes). i have also run a number of the inbuilt diagnostics, but found no errors. i want to avoid having to do a system restore for as long as i can. does anyone know anything that can help? (the laptop is running a 500gb SSD, 2gb Nvidia 640m, 8gb ram, 3rd gen i7 quad core with 8 threads) thanks.

  Ok, I tried to install linux and dual boot my laptop with 7 ultimate. I messed up. When I tried to boot to 7 it said no. Something along the lines of device not found. So I being young and stupid I uninstalled linux which I could boot into, and I still could not boot to windows. Next step was to run the startup fixes from the boot cd. Swing and a miss, I also ran the fixmbr and fixboot. Which brings us up to my current place. I installed 7 again on my blank partition in hopes I could access my other partion. No dice. So my question to yall is how can I fix my original filesystem or at least get to the stuff on it. In the new 7 install the old partion does not even have a drive letter. That is my sad story any help would be apreciated.

• Feasibility of Windows Server 2008 DFS replication over WAN link

  We have just set up a WAN link that connects two buildings in our organisation. The link is provided by a 100-Mbps point to point line. We have a Windows Server 2008 R2 domain controller on each side of the link. Now we are planning to set up DFS for file services across the organisation. The estimated data volume is over 2 TB, and will grow at approximately 20% annually. My idea is to set up a file server in each building and install DFS so that all the contents stay replicated over the 100-Mbps link. I hope that this will ensure that any user will be directed to the closest (and fastest) server when requesting a file from the DFS folders. My concern is whether a 100-Mbps WAN link is good enough to guarantee DFS replication. I've no experience with DFS, so any solid advice is welcome. The line is reliable (i.e. it doesn't crash often) and our data transfer tests show that a 5 MB/sec transfer rate is easily achieved. This is approximately 40% of the nominal bandwidth. I am also concerned about the latency. I mean, how long will users need to wait to see one change on one side of the link after the change has been made on the other side. My questions are: Is this link between networks a reliable infrastructure on which to set up DFS replication? What latency times would be typical (seconds, minutes, hours, days)? Would you recommend that we go for DFS in this scenario, or is there a better alternative? Many thanks.

• Windows XP Setup Fails to Recognize USB Floppy after formatting AHCI disk

  I am attempting to install Windows XP Professional x64 onto a HP EliteBook 8540w. I have downloaded both the latest Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers and the Intel Storage Matrix drivers that are listed on HPs website and copied the drivers over to a floppy disk (two separate floppies, one for each version of the drivers.) Booting to my WinXP Pro x64 install CD, I go through the F6 process, load the driver and am able to see my HDD, delete, create and format partitions on it. When I go to continue the install, after checking the disk, the system asks me to enter the disk labeled "Intel Rapid Storage Technology" and press enter to continue. Nothing happens at this point when I press enter. This happens if I use the latest drivers or the older drivers. We have created a slipstreamed install CD using nLite that has the AHCI drivers integrated, which installs fine. However, we have identified a number of issues with the system that I believe are side-effects of using nLite for the slipstreaming and I am attempting to verify that. I have researched this issue and found a few examples of others having the same problem, but no solution. The USB floppy is a Lacie branded floppy, connecting it to a working XP workstation shows it to be the Y-E Data USB floppy drive that is supposedly 100% compatible with XP per MS KB 916196.

• Windows 7 64bit will not register a 32bit DLL

  I'm trying to install a 32bit Oracle instant client onto several Windows 7 PCs. This version is the one required by the customer's software. I have successfully installed it on about a dozen PCs using the same installer, but two machines refuse to register a DLL. The two PCs are of different make and model. I have been able to install this software in the past on these models. This is the error that the installer throws up: The file copies to the location referenced above. If I choose to ignore the error and manually register it later, I get the following error: This error is returned whether I use the 32bit (syswow64) or 64bit version of regsvr32. Command Prompt is run as admin, and the ID with which I'm logged into the PC is an admin. I've tried copying the file into the syswow64 folder, but I get the same error. This same installer works on other PCs. To further complicate the issue, one of the two PCs also will not register an OCX file from a different 32bit installer: Both PCs are relatively new and have standard software installed. We use MS Forefront for security, but disabling that didn't change the behavior. What am I missing?

• Limit copssh users to home directory Windows 7

  Hello all- I have found these two sites below: CopSSH SFTP -- limit users access to their home directory only and http://blogs.windowsnetworking.com/wnadmin/2006/11/07/copssh-restricting-users-access/ as well as the Copssh website, but upon completion they do not seem to work. I have copssh installed and I have a separate Windows account "sftpuser" created that is used to connect. The connection works just fine, but I want to limit that user to just their home directory and sub folders. I have 3 hard drives, the C:, a W: and an S: and I want the FTP account to only be able to access the W: drive and its contents (the root of the W: drive is the FTP home directory). Right now "sftpuser" can access all folders, including jump drives to C:, and S:. The linked tutorials do not seem to work, because it seems when I create a group "ftpusersgroup" and add "sftpuser" to the group, and then deny "ftpusersgroup" access to the C: drive, the service breaks and I can no longer login. I have undone everything and am ready to start fresh. Does anyone know how to do this, or is there a better tutorial that someone has or has found? I hope this makes sense. What design would you recommend for a database that is Memory resident Must run on windows, linux and (at a stretch) the mac Accept multiple queries simultaneously Have minimum overhead, since a search is expected to take <0.25s This program implements a domain-specific search. Think of it as a database, but one that takes advantage of domain specific information to outperform a convential database search (for example, with custom oracle indexing). We have a custom data structure for our data. Our protoype is a simple exe that constructs the database in memory each time it is run. We were thinking that perhaps this program would suffice, but augmented with sockets so it can listen for queries. This database will be static. Its contents will change infrequently. We expect queries, and the solution, to be delivered via a web service.

• Restoring Windows 2008 Server X86 and X64

  Restoring Windows 2008 Server (Domain Controller) We are using Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 to Image our DC. Now this software has a feature to convert the backup into a vmware or hyper-v VM I have also used disk2vhd to convert one of our dc's to a vhd and when I connected it into Hyper-V, it booted fine, I can login - BUT :-) As soon as I login, I get the activation error, that change product key, this product key isn't good for this machine etc. Question is : When in a real recovery situation, what would be the procedure to restore it either virtual or onto a physical box but be able to login and change product key etc ? In this scenario its just locked down and I cant' do anything, if this is the case, how would I replicate my production environment via these tools ? Any Ideas ? Will be grateful for some real world examples here. Same thing happens with our exchange backup / test restore either physical or virtual, can login but nothing else. Now we don't have the keys as they are OEM keys and just wondering what will happen in a real scenario, would we be purchasing another KEY or using the OEM key on our new server ? This is a test environment I am trying to create by restoring our backups either into hyper-v or physical test machines. Also, If I build up a machine (Server 2008) in a VM (Hyper-V), How can I restore just the system state backup of my DC into it ? will that give me the activation error too ? even though I would use the TRIAL ISOs provided by Microsoft ? • Maintaining "Portability" Between Linux and Windows 7

  I am using the following ways in my office's Windows 7 machine to maintain my "portabilibity" when disaster strikes and I need to switch computer while I have no luxury of time for reinstalling all my program to the new PC. a majority of programs I used are portable, mostly from portableapp.com, like notepad+, GIMP, even R, I extract them and store them in a folder in My document, in a structure similar to the default portableapp installation when they are installed to a thumbdrive only a few software that portable version is not available and I will install them as usual all of my working files are stored in a folder in My document I regularly backup them all using syncback, because this program can keep versioning of my backup, and the backup is stored in a portable drive. One day I need to switch my computer and the operation is relative simple for me: I just move the two folders mentioned above into the my document folder of the new PC, install those few "non-portable" program in it, and this is almost done, some minor hiccups can be solved by reinstalling the portableapp into the drive. Overall speaking it is a smooth process. I would like to maintain the same degree of "portability" in my home Linux desktop (Ubuntu or Mint, I'm still deciding), that is, if my Linux crash and I need to reinstall it again. All I need to do is the move the two folder back to the new Linux, and most of my work will be almost ready to be worked on again. But I don't know how to find a Linux-alternative of portableapps. Being a newer to Linux, can anyone tell me whether this is possible in Linux?

• Fixed Resource Monitor Graph Scale in Windows Server 2008 R2

  In Windows Server 2008 R2's Resource Monitor, is there a way to set the scale of the various graphs to be constant values instead of variable based on data? It seems to me that the utility of a graph is to get a quick overview glance at the values those graphs are showing. So if I look at the CPU graph and the line is up near the top, I can know immediately that something is using all my CPU and go investigate what. I don't really care if the CPU is jumping between .01% and 2%. Or if the network usage monitor is up near the top, I will know that all my bandwidth is being used up, and go figure out what. But the way things are now, the graphs are meaningless because the scales constantly shift. If you look at the network usage graph in one second it might have a scale out of 100kbps, and the next second have a scale based on 1mbps! So... is there a registry key or something that will peg the scale of these graphs to logical maximums?

• FTP issues with Windows 2003 box and Filezilla

  We've set up a Windows 2003 server with IIS 6 and the FTP is Filezilla. I'm not a sys admin by any means and neither is my other developer. I'm trying to connect to FTP on a Mac with a Cyberduck FTP client. I'm running OSX 10.6.3. The problem is that I can connect to the FTP address, but when I do it will hang for a minute or two trying to list the directories. This address is pointed to the webroot folder so it's only trying to list the pertinent folders for the site we're working on. Eventually after a minute or two it will go through and list everything and then if you try and open a file or another folder, it will hang again and then eventually list the folders. My question: Is there some stupid default setting we're missing? Is this a common occurrence? Like I said I'm not a sys admin at all and I'm sure I'm missing some valuable questions for anyone that reads this, so please fire away if you can help and you need more info, I'll do my best to provide it. • Hiding subfolders from users with Windows Server security

  Using Windows Server 2008. I would like to allow all users to map to a common network drive and be able to browse it. But, I only want them to be able to see the subfolders they actually have access rights to. Is this doable? Example I have a share with two folders on it; \\domain\share\FolderA \\domain\share\FolderB With three different security groups, I would like to map a network drive for all three to \\domain\share. However, for group1, I want them to only be able to see FolderA, group2 should only see FolderB and group3 should see both. I am not just talking about denying access to the actual folder, which is easy enough, I don't want the user to even be able to see that the folder exists. In other words, when group 1 logs in and do "dir n:\" they should see N:\FolderA When group 2 logs in, they should see N:\FolderB and when group 3 logs in they should see N:\Folder A N:\Folder B My half-baked solution If I completely block access to the root then I can't map a drive to it. I can give everyone the traverse right which then allows the user to map a drive. However, if a member of group1 or group2 tries to go to "N:\" they get an access denied error. If they go to N:\FolderA (for group1) then it works. So, that sort of works, but it would be nicer if the user could actually browse to N:\ and just only see the subfolders they have access to. I am pretty sure I have seen this done but not sure how to do it myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

• "Enter/Return" Key with Word Mobile on Windows Mobile

  Some of our employees are using PDAs running Windows Mobile. I wish I could provide more data regarding versions, but frankly these things aren't my jurisdiction. Someone's simply come to me looking for what they thought would be a quick fix. They're using Word Mobile and the barcode scanner to record large volumes of data. The scanner's default action is to insert the scanned text exactly as if it had been input with the keyboard, and puts a newline at the end. That's great, because it's exactly what we need it to do: separate data with newlines. The issue comes when system can't read the barcode, and the employee has to type in the data by hand. They've discovered a very peculiar quirk of Mobile applications: pressing the hardware Enter/Return key on the keyboard appears to save and exit the application. How do we change this behavior? They've realized that using the stylus to "click" the virtual on-screen keyboard's Enter/Return key will add the necessary newline, but it's a huge inconvenience for them. How do I fix the default behavior of the Enter/Return key for Word Mobile to instead insert a newline?

• Cross-forest universal groups on Windows Server?

  I would like to create a Universal Group whose members are a mix of cross-forests users and groups. In the following example, two forests are mentioned (US and UK) and two domains in each forest (GeneralStaff and Java): For example, the universalDevelopers group may comprise of members from UK.Java.Developers and US.Java.Developers. Then, for example, there may be a group of universalSales which contains the users UK.GeneralStaff.John and US.GeneralStaff.Dave. In UK forest at the minute, I can freely add members and groups from the UK. But there is no way to add members from the US forest, despite having a two-way trust in place... e.g. I can login with US members into UK and vice-versa. A further complication is that, with a Universal group in the UK (which contains three domains), I can only add two of the three. It can't see the third. Could people please provide some thoughts on why cross-forest groups can't be created and ways of 'seeing' all domains within a forest. EDIT: This is on a combination of Windows 2003 and 2008 server. Answers can be regarding either. Thanks!

• Windows Server - share files without access for administrator

  We have a MS Windows Server 2008 R8 based server that is administrated by our IT department. We would like to achieve two things simultaneously: A folder on the server, containing several thousand files (new files added frequently) that is accessible to some ActiveDirectory users (e.g. board of directors) but is not accessible by IT department employees IT department employees still maintain rights to administrate the server, including installing new software and services We already checked some solutions: Using NTFS access rights. Unfortunately IT (members of "Administrators" group) can set themselves as new owners of the files and change the permissions so that they gain access to the files. Enabling EFS. Unfortunately even if you do not allow IT to access files, they still can disable EFS completely because they have administrative rights. Moreover as far as I know you have to manually add permissions for all users but the owner for each new file - very inconvenient. Creating a new role for the IT department that has all the privileges apart from taking ownership of files. Unfortunately if you're not a member of the Administrators group, you cannot install new software, no matter what privileges you add to the role. TrueCrypt - nice free encryption software, but with poor sharing capabilities. You can either mount an encryption container on the server (and then IT has access to its contents) or you mount them locally but only one user can mount it for writing. AxCrypt - free encryption software that enables file-by-file encryption on the server. There are some disadvantages though - you have to manually encrypt each new file added. The files have their extensions changes. You can only set one password for all files (so all users have to know this one password). Any other ideas? Our budget is limited so enterprise-class software from Symantec or PGP would probably be not an option.

  Like many of you, I learn best by getting my hands dirty.  When confronted with the task of understanding a new set of products and technologies and figuring out how they might apply to a vertical industry like healthcare, I set out to create a demonstration.  The video that follows aims to show how the Oracle embedded software portfolio can be applied to a healthcare application.  The demonstration utilizes among others, Java SE Embedded, Berkeley DB, Apache Tomcat, Oracle 11gR2 and Oracle Database Mobile Server. • The Wifi is working fine but no internet connection in Windows 8 [migrated]

  I'm currently having a Problem with my msi GT70 laptop. my laptop is running windows 8 and yesterday it requested a Restart to Update. after the Restart and the update I tried to surf the net through google chrome, the WiFi connection is perfect but the page I tried to access is not loading at all, after a while it shows failure to load page. I disabled and reenabled the WiFi chip through the device manager but still no internet connection. I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers, still no internet. I updated the Driver of the wifi, still no internet, I even went to Wifi configuration and tried to change the DNS and reset it back to automatically, still no Luck.. I'm really lost I don't know what to do, I don't want to go deep and play with Laptop DNA "aka: registry file" and screw things up. I really appreciate any help in this matter. thanks in advance. Note: I tried to access many pages but no luck. I even tried Firefox, Opera, even ie still no luck. The internet is working fine on my tablet and cellphone, except for the Laptop.
