• What is your personal learning process? [closed]

- by yadvent
I just wanted to say hello and ask a few simple questions. I have recently dove into programming with c# and have been curious what everyone else's experiences have been with when learning and starting out. What are some things that you can say that really have made a difference in your understanding and usages of any particular language? I lurk several forums but for some reason have always just kept to myself, and I've realized today that I'm not fully utilizing my resources when it comes to interacting with the community. With that being said, I realize that everyone that is interested in programming inherently is a natural problem solver and would like also to ask you to share your process of learning. Are you the type to have a short term project to tackle a general set of problems you're likely to encounter? Or are you a type of programmer that practices by zeroing in on a specific few problems you would like to solve? Any reply will be greatly appreciated Thank you :)

• Java EE @ NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium Des Moines

- by reza_rahman
As some of you may be aware I recently joined the well-respected US based No Fluff Just Stuff (NFJS) Tour. The NFJS Central Iowa Software Symposium was held August 8 - 10 in Des Moines. The Des Moines show is one of the smaller ones but still was good overall. It is one of the few events of it's kind that take place this part the country so it is extremely important. I had five talks total over two days, more or less back-to-back. I had decent attendance for all my sessions and had many of the same folks staying for multiple sessions which is always a very good sign. I did talks on Java EE 7/Java EE 8, WebSocket, the Cargo Tracker Java EE Blue Prints, JavaScript + Java EE and NoSQL + Java EE. More details, including slide decks and code as well as my NFJS tour schedule, posted on my personal blog.

• Capture an area of a game, display it in a small window

- by steakbbq
I am looking to make a program that accomplishes some simple goals. I need to be able to specify an area of my screen to have reproduced in a window. Similar to who the windows magnifier works. I also need it to stay on top. I also need it to be transparent. I also need it to be ghost like(mouse clicks go through it) so the application below can be interacted with still. Here is what I am trying to do. What would be the best way to go about it? http://i.imgur.com/0ahi7.jpg

• MVC 2 Client Side Model Validation with ExtJS

One of the most exciting new features in MVC 2 is "Enhanced Model Validation support across both server and client"; this new enhanced support allows for client side validation to be dynamically generated into a view from DataAnnotations attributes on models. One minor complaint: Out of the box, it only supports the Microsoft AJAX libraries. Good news: It can use other frameworks, and we have done just that! Ext.ux.MvcFormValidator The MvcFormValidator is an alternative form validation...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • What should I do with my programming project?

- by rambodash
I've been working on a top secret project that has potential of becoming very popular. No one has done anything like it. The problem is I have no motivation to finish it, and its about 70% done. I also don't have the ability to sell & market the product. The documentation is a pain to write. I just want to finish the project , receive my reward and move on to other things. I know that if I were to release it as a product I'm going to have to do support, and do bug fixes. No thank you! I've thought of making it open source but I'm failing to see the benefits. My hard work is just going to be up for grabs isn't it? How can I abandon my project whilst getting rewarded for the work I've done so far?

The single best place to get your questions answered about Silverlight are the Silverlight Forums. Now, I know that forums are often a companys way of saving money on customer service, but the dev team and the Community PMs & Evangelists monitor these forums carefully, so it really is a lot quicker than sending email. • On Building a Data-Driven E-Commerce Site

The following is a preprint of an article for the NDC Magazine to be published in Apri. It had been a long, hard week at work. I had my feet up and was calling my long-distance girlfriend when she popped the question: “Do you know how to build web sites?” That was about a month ago and, after swearing to her that I spent my days helping other people build their web sites, so I should oughta know a thing or two about how to build one for her. After some very gentle requirements...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Version Not Final, Does not represent actual game footage?

- by thinly veiled question mark
Just curious about this. Frequently, a lot of gameplay videos from big studios have small subtitled text at the lower part of the screen, reading something like: Pre-Alpha Gameplay -- Footage not Final Game Footage not Final Pre-Alpha, Game here is not final Is there some sort of reason they do this? Is there some sort of legal ramification that they need to go through by adding this? I have especially seen some gameplay vids whose titles are "Alpha x.x.x", yet still, in the video itself, it always something like "footage not final, game may change".

• Goings On

The last several weeks have been pretty hectic for me. First, Visual Studio 2010 and .NET Framework 4 shipped. Of course, only those living in caves and under rocks missed that bit of news. However, that event forced me to leave my own cave and make a few public appearances. April 12-15 - DevConnections, Las Vegas One thing that I love about the Bellagio is how they go out of their way to make me comfortable by naming their convention center rooms after the...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Why do int when add up in java keeps on adding? [closed]

- by Trycon
I'm developing a game. I'm really new in java and researched google: why does an int when added, keeps on adding java Most of the times, it always adds even: STOP_DAMAGE+=1; Even sometimes, it subtract till negative. I'm annoyed. Sometimes it doesn't add too much. I do not understand. Here is my code: if(isPressed==true) { if(STOP_DAMAGE<=5) { if(WAIT_DAMAGE>=3000) { ENEMY_SHIP_HEALTH-=SHIP_DAMAGE_ENEMY; STOP_DAMAGE+=1; } } } for(;WAIT_DAMAGE>=3003;) { WAIT_DAMAGE-=WAIT_DAMAGE;//time is deducted } //WAIT_DAMAGE is a time int

• Why most use Cygwin and not Uwin?

- by user287424
Most academic researchers I know target just *nix, and rely on Cygwin to make their applications available on Windows. I have tried many of these projects and always found them too unstable for serious use when running on Cygwin. Uwin looks like a promising alternative to Cygwin. I haven't tried it yet, but I found several comments that it is faster and more stable. However, I haven't seen any use of Uwin to support running *nix apps on Windows. What are the social and/or technical reasons behind Uwin's lack of popularity?

• Google Voice API for .NET

- by lennykean
There is no official API for Google Voice. However, many of the operations are done via simple rest style http calls, so building one shouldn’t be too difficult. Digging deeper and rolling your own is always a great way to exercise your problem solving skills and learn new things. So I did just that. As of the time of writing this, I’m only implementing basic SMS send since that’s all I needed. I’m hoping to implement more functionality in the future. In my next post, I’ll be using the SMS functionality to implement 2 factor authentication with ASP.Net MVC.

• Connecting 2 PCs using USB-to-USB (male-male) cable

- by Amirizzuan
I found this while Googling around: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/Connecting-Two-PCs-Using-a-USB-USB-Cable/248 But then, the solution given in the article is using Windows. Is there any Ubuntu equivalent to this? I would really love to SSH into my Ubuntu server via my Ubuntu laptop, just by connecting one end of the male USB to my laptop, and another end of the male USB to my server. I know I can always SSH into my server via the network, but then in this case of mine, there are cases the server is inside a secluded-secured network server room, and the only way for me to check things out is to go into the server room and open the keyboard console and monitor there. But, if I can just bring my laptop inside and connect to the USB there, then that would be cool. Any idea guys?

• Microsoft Silverlight 4 Data and Services Cookbook

Alas I find my self doing another book review... its not clear to me that I should continue to do that but on this particular book it heads in the right direction. As noted in an earlier post I find the idea of a cook book to be of particular interest and useful in my work with Silverlight. This book has gotten closer then any other to date in building the ideal Silverlight book. Albeit the book does make an attempt to teach Silverlight to some degree but it tends to be more of a reference book,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • 12.04 precise HDMI not working on ATI Radeon

- by sfxpt
This is precisely a 12.04 HDMI output problem, because it works for 11.10 - everything else are the same, only the OS version is different. The symptom is that on my HDMI output TV screen, it always shows Unsupported resolution even after setting it to the resolution that works on Ubuntu 11.10 (via gnome-control-center, in which it detects my TV just fine), I still don't see any output on TV. The audio is not working either. I think it is 12.04's problem, because if I boot into Ubuntu 11.10, and everything else remain the same, HDMI output (video & audio) work just fine. 12.04 is a freshly installed, just the vanilla Ubuntu HD installation. How should I nailed down / fix the problem?

• VS2010 Gotcha: Inadvertently targeting the wrong framework

I love VS2010s multi-framework targeting feature, yet it has bitten me in the rear-end more than once. The problem is that I have created projects in .NET 3.5 without realizing it, then at some point, when something doesnt work as expected, if Im lucky I discover the mistake. Typically, this happens after you have explicitly chosen .NET 3.5 as the target framework. Then every project after that will be .NET 3.5 until you explicitly choose .NET 4.0 again. This morning that wasnt the case. I was...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • how to stop enemies from moving to one point when lots of them are chasing one object [duplicate]

- by BBgun
This question already has an answer here: Is there a simple way to stop enemies standing in the same spot? 8 answers i am making a top down game which lots of enemies are chasing one guy. then, enemies would move to one point without any collision, they just overlay each other. so ,is there any simple way to make them feel more real? make them not overlay with each other? ================================= i have tried the solution using boundbox to check collision, but i still very puzzled about what to do with the collision. i have a bad solution.it doesn't work well. my solution in simple: foreach(around_enemy_arr in other) { vector a = normalize(self.positionvector - other.positionvector); self.move_vector = self.move_vector + a; } this can work, but when plenty of enemies come very close to each other, they would shake. i am sooooo confused. please help.

• Diminishing Returns - When is it Time to Take Your Website Live?

Being a perfectionist is not always the best way to be. Especially in a world where being first to market isn't the worst thing ever. Like many things in life, deciding when to take your new website live is a fine balancing act. The sooner you can start building up a readership or client base, the better; but you risk serious damage to your site's reputation if its functional and technical performance is below par. So when is the right time?

• How do you stay motivated for hobby projects? [closed]

- by aubreyrhodes
I started seriously programming as a hobbiest, student and then intern about 4 years ago and I've always done small projects on the side as a learning exercise. Schools over now though, and I spend my days at work as a software developer. I would still love to do projects on the side to learn about areas in computer science that I'm not exposed to at work, but I've noticed that after 8 hours of starring at an IDE it's far to tempting to veg out. Any time I do get up the gumption to work on something for a few hours lately it's gotten left by the wayside. Anyone have any advice for sticking with side projects when you spend most of your day coding?

• Evolving Architectures – Part II but Design is emergent

This is part II of a series on agile architecture. You can read part I here. In the previous installment I provided a definition for software architecture and raised the apparent friction between the up front design implied by software architecture and the YAGNI approach and deferred requirements prompted by agile development in the large. This installment take a look at an additional angle of the problem which is the difference between design and architecture (while...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors?
