• JPA - Real primary key generated ID for references

  I have ~10 classes, each of them, have composite key, consist of 2-4 values. 1 of the classes is a main one (let's call it "Center") and related to other as one-to-one or one-to-many. Thinking about correct way of describing this in JPA I think I need to describe all the primary keys using @Embedded / @PrimaryKey annotations. Question #1: My concern is - does it mean that on the database level I will have # of additional columns in each table referring to the "Center" equal to number of column in "Center" PK? If yes, is it possible to avoid it by using some artificial unique key for references? Could you please give an idea how real PK and the artificial one needs to be described in this case? Note: The reason why I would like to keep the real PK and not just use the unique id as PK is - my application have some data loading functionality from external data sources and sometimes they may return records which I already have in local database. If unique ID will be used as PK - for new records I won't be able to do data update, since the unique ID will not be available for just downloaded ones. At the same time it is normal case scenario for application and it just need to update of insert new records depends on if the real composite primary key matches. Question #2: All of the 10 classes have common field "date" which I described in an abstract class which each of them extends. The "date" itself is never a key, but it always a part of composite key for each class. Composite key is different for each class. To be able to use this field as a part of PK should I describe it in each class or is there any way to use it as is? I experimented with @Embedded and @PrimaryKey annotations and always got an error that eclipselink can't find field described in an abstract class. Thank you in advance! PS. For example, consider if I have a class that requires both logging functionality and centralized exception management. Should I use DIP and inject both required concerns via an interface into the class that requires them? Should I use a service locater that I pass to each class that will require some cross cutting functionality? Is there a different solution altogether? Am I asking the wrong question entirely?

I've snipped them, but there are Eval statements that wire up to the properties in the outer Repeater. Anyway, one of the fields in the inner Repeater needs to be a Bind instead of an Eval, as I want to get the values that the user types in. The SupplementAmount input element correctly receives it's value when the page loads, but on the other side, when I inspect the contents of the Costs List when the form posts back, the changes the user made aren't present. From each one of those derived Classes, there are further more two classes are derived each called ChildClassAA and ChildClassAB[AB stands for Bth Child class from the Ath Class.Lets not really pull our hair on this nomenclature]. Now, ideally, I want to declare a general type as a private member of another Class say IndependentClass which can be initialized during run time as either of the objects of type ClassAor ClassB or ClassC and even the derived classes like ClassAA or ClassAB. • NHibernate: How is identity Id updated when saving a transient instance?

  If I use session-per-transaction and call: session.SaveOrUpdate(entity) corrected: session.SaveOrUpdateCopy(entity) ..and entity is a transient instance with identity-Id=0. Shall the above line automatically update the Id of the entity, and make the instance persistent? Or should it do so on transaction.Commit? Or do I have to somehow code that explicitly? Obviously the Id of the database row (new, since transient) is autogenerated and saved as some number, but I'm talking about the actual parameter instance here. Which is the business logic instance. • Am I doing AS3 reference cleanup correctly?

  In one frame of my fla file (let's call it frame 2), I load a few xml files, then send that data into a class that is initialized in that frame, this class creates a few timers and listeners. Then when this class is done doing it's work. I call a dispatchEvent and move to frame 3. This frame does some things as well, it's initialized and creates a few event listeners and timers. When it's done, I move to frame 2 again. This is supposed to repeat as often as I need so I need to clean up the references correctly and I'm wondering if I'm doing it correctly. For sprites I do this. world.removeChild(Background); // world is the parent stage Background = null; For instances of other classes I do this. Players[i].cleanUp(world); // do any cleanup within the instanced class world.removeChild(PlayersSelect[i]); For event listeners I do this. if(Background != null) { Background.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK, deSelectPlayer); } For timers I do this. if(Timeout != null) { Timeout.stop(); Timeout.removeEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER, queueHandler); Timeout.removeEventListener(TimerEvent.TIMER_COMPLETE, queueCompleted); Timeout = null; } And for library images I do this if(_libImage!= null) { s.removeChild(Images._libImage); // s is the stage _libImage= null; } And for the class itself in the main timeline, I do this Frame2.removeEventListener("Done", IAmDone); Frame2.cleanUp(); // the cleanup() does all the stuff above Frame2= null; Even if I do all this, when I get to frame 2 for the 2nd time, it runs for 1-2 seconds and then I get a lot of null reference errors because the cleanup function is called prematurely. Am I doing the cleanup correctly? What can cause events to fire prematurely?

• How can I hit my database with an AJAX call using javascript?

  I am pretty new at this stuff, so bear with me. I am using ASP.NET MVC. I have created an overlay to cover the page when someone clicks a button corresponding to a certain database entry. Because of this, ALL of my code for this functionality is in a .js file contained within my project. What I need to do is pull the info corresponding to my entry from the database itself using an AJAX call, and place that into my textboxes. Then, after the end-user has made the desired changes, I need to update that entry's values to match the input. I've been surfing the web for a while, and have failed to find an example that fits my needs effectively. • Purpose of boost::checked_delete

  I don't understand the purpose of boost::checked_delete. The documentation says: The C++ Standard allows, in 5.3.5/5, pointers to incomplete class types to be deleted with a delete-expression. When the class has a non-trivial destructor, or a class-specific operator delete, the behavior is undefined. Some compilers issue a warning when an incomplete type is deleted, but unfortunately, not all do, and programmers sometimes ignore or disable warnings. The supplied function and class templates can be used to prevent these problems, as they require a complete type, and cause a compilation error otherwise. So the C++ standard allows you to delete incomplete types, which causes undefined behavior if the type has a non-trivial destructor. What? How can an incomplete type have any destructor at all? Isn't an incomplete type just a prototype?

• Is there a way to have the equivalent of multiple :before and :after pseudo-elements in CSS?

  Currently I have this markup that represents an icon container and some elements styled with CSS inside it that in the end show as graphic icon. <div class="icon"> <div class="icon-element1"></div> <div class="icon-element2"></div> <div class="icon-element3"></div> </div> The number of the child elements can be different depending on the complexity of the icon. What I want is to somehow move as much as possible to CSS stylesheet, so that ideally I would have only <div class="icon"></div> and the rest would just render from CSS styles, something close in concept to :before/:after, a kind of virtual divs. I don't want to use JavaScript to add the elements dynamically. It would be possible to do this if we had multiple :before/:after. Here is an example of an icon I get by using the markup from above: As you can see, there are 3 child elements representing gray case, white screen and turquoise button. Please advise, how I can simplify this markup so that not to have to put all the divs each time I want this icon to be shown.

• How to configure Spring-DM OSGi service for new instance per call?

  I'm starting to delve into using Spring DM and OSGi services in an RCP application. I've created a service which is used by another bundle in the RCP application. It does a lookup of the service via calls to getBundleContext().getServiceReference() using the explicit bundle names and service class names. I'm not using DI anywhere yet. The issue I'm running into is that the service that is returned in the requesting bundle is a singleton. At times I notice a threading issue since it is a "stateful" service. How do I configure the application to get back a new service instance with each call? • What reasons are there to place member functions before member variables or vice/versa?

  Given a class, what reasoning is there for either of the two following code styles? Style A: class Foo { private: doWork(); int bar; } Style B: class Foo { private: int bar; doWork(); } For me, they are a tie. I like Style A because the member variables feel more fine-grained, and thus would appear past the more general member functions. However, I also like Style B, because the member variables seem to determine, in a OOP-style way, what the class is representing. Are there other things worth considering when choosing between these two styles?

• VC9 C1083 Cannot open include file: 'boost...' after trying to abstract an include dependency

  Hey, So I've been working on a project for the past number of weeks and it uses a number of Boost libraries. In particular I'm using the boost::dynamic_bitset library quite extensively. I've had zero issues up until now; but tonight I discovered a dependency between some includes which I had to resolve; and I tried to do so by providing an abstract callback class. Effectively I now have the following: First include... class OtherClassCallback { public: virtual int someOtherMethod() const = 0; }; class SomeClass { public: void someMethod(OtherClassCallback *oc) { ... oc->someOtherMethod(); ... } }; Second include... #include "SomeClass.h" class SomeOtherClass : public OtherClassCallback { public: int someOtherMethod() const { return this->someInt; } }; Here is the issue; ever since I implemented this class I'm now getting the following error: fatal error C1083: Cannot open include file: 'boost/dynamic_bitset/dynamic_bitset.hpp': No such file or directory Now I'm getting no other compiler errors; and it's a pretty substantial project. My include paths and so on are perfect; my files are fully accessible and removing the changes fixes the issue. Does anyone have any idea what might be going on? I'm compiling to native Windows executables in VS9. I should confess that I'm very inexperienced with C++ in general so go easy on me if it's something horribly straightforward; I can't figure it out.

The wrapper has .plugin class too - might seem counter-intuitive so another way to view it is this: I want to get the .clicky children of a given .plugin div, but not .plugin .plugin .clicky. Here's the problem - the depth of each .clicky element (or indeed, the number of them) is unknown and variable in relation to the wrappers. One could be immediately below the first wrapper, or inside 10 <ul>s. I've tried selectors like: $('.wrapper').find('.clicky').not('.plugin > .clicky'); But they still selected child .clicky. How would I be able to filter out .plugin and any children of .plugin from my selector before using find()?

• iPhone - AES256 Encryption Using Built In Library

  Hey all, I am using http://pastie.org/966473 as a reference as all I need to do is encrypt something using AES256 encrypting. I created a class and put the implementation in the pastie on top of the implementation for my class. @implementation //pastie code @end @implementation //my class code @end In my class code I create a NSMutableData and try to call the EncryptAES method and I get a warning saying it might not respond to that. What am I doing wrong here? do I need to implement the pastie code elsewhere? Thanks for any help.

• PHP class_exists always returns true

  I have a PHP class that needs some pre-defined globals before the file is included: File: includes/Product.inc.php if (class_exists('Product')) { return; } // This class requires some predefined globals if ( !isset($gLogger) || !isset($db) || !isset($glob) ) { return; } class Product { ... } The above is included in other PHP files that need to use Product using require_once. Anyone who wants to use Product must however ensure those globals are available, at least that's the idea. I recently debugged an issue in a function within the Product class which was caused because $gLogger was null. The code requiring the above Product.inc.php had not bothered to create the $gLogger. So The question is how was this class ever included if $gLogger was null? I tried to debug the code (xdebug in NetBeans), put a breakpoint at the start of Product.inc.php to find out and every time it came to the if (class_exists('Product')) clause it would simply step in and return thus never getting to the global checks. So how was it ever included the first time? This is PHP 5.1+ running under MAMP (Apache/MySQL). I don't have any auto loaders defined.

• What's the "proper" way to retrieve a reference to a ribbon object?

  For a VSTO workbook project, is there a best practice for retrieving a reference to the Ribbon object from the ThisWorkbook class? Here's what I'm doing: In my Ribbon class, I created a public method called InvalidateControl(string controlID). I need to call that method from the ThisWorkbook class based on when a certain workbook level event fires. But the only way I can see to "get" a reference to that Ribbon object is to do this... // This is all in the ThisWorkbook class Ribbon ribbon; protected override IRibbonExtensibility CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject() { this.ribbon = new Ribbon(); return this.ribbon; } ...which seems a little smelly. I mean, I have to override CreateRibbonExtensibilityObject() regardless; all I'm doing beyond that is maintaining a local reference to the ribbon so I can call methods against it. But it doesn't feel right. Is there another, better way to get that reference in the ThisWorkbook class? Or is this pretty acceptable? Thanks!

  I am thinking of the following example to illustrate why contravariance is useful. Let's consider a GUI framework with Widgets, Events, and Event Listeners. abstract class Event; class KeyEvent extends Event class MouseEvent extends Event trait EventListener[-Event] { def listen(e:Event) } Let Widgets define the following methods: def addKeyEventListener(listener:EventListener[KeyEvent]) def addMouseEventListener(listener:EventListener[MouseEvent]) These methods accept only "specific" event listeners, which is fine. However I would like to define also "kitchen-sink" listeners, which listen to all events, and pass such listeners to the "add listener" methods above. For instance, I would like to define LogEventListener to log all incoming events class LogEventListener extends EventListener[Event] { def listen(e:Event) { log(event) } } Since the trait EventListener is contravariant in Event we can pass LogEventListener to all those "add listener" methods without losing their type safety. Does it make sense ?

• VS2010 final does only link project on "rebuild all", not on "build changed"

  I've just migrated a solution containing c++ and c# projects from VS2008 to VS2010 and got a strange problem. When I select "rebuild all", everything compiles and links as I would expect it to do. Then I change some c++ source file (just add a space), build the project, I get several thousands of linking errors like these: GDlgPackerListe.obj : error LNK2028: Nicht aufgelöstes Token (0A0000C7) ""public: bool __thiscall LList::Add(class LBString const &)" (?Add@LList@@$$FQAE_NABVLBString@@@Z)", auf das in Funktion ""public: virtual void __thiscall LRcPackerListe::HookRunReport(class LFortschritt &)" (?HookRunReport@LRcPackerListe@@$$FUAEXAAVLFortschritt@@@Z)" verwiesen wird. When I hit "rebuild all" it recompiles and links without any errors or even warnings and produces a working exe. I'm using Visual Studio 2010 final (german edition). Whats going on here? Or, more important: how do I get the linker to work correctly??
