• file corruption on read/write 2.6.32-22-server (happens across many kernels)

  Hi Guys, I'm having an issue where after the server has been up for a period of time (~week/few days) the server will start reading corrupt data. For instance when I run a sha1sum of a file after a fresh boot it remains the same. However after a while I will start to get segfaults and from then on whenever I read this file I get a different sha1sum. I'm also use KVM for virtualization as well as MD for software RAID on this server and the processor is a Phenom II X4 965. I don't believe it's the software raid however as this affects files also hosted on non-raid partitions so I don't know.

• Issues with proftpd on ubuntu server

  I'm in the process of setting up a new server running Ubuntu 9.10 and I need to be able to access my web directory via FTP. I've installed proftpd, opened up port 21 and made sure it was up and running. Everything seems good, but when I try to connect via FTP from my personal computer to the server it times out each time. I've been stuck on this issue for a while now and I would appreciate any help. Any ideas???

• What's the point of 6.0GB/s SATA harddrives?

  So I've recently been seeing on the higher grade motherboards SATA 6.0gb/s ports. That's all fine and dandy. Extra room for expansion.. Now, my question is why are people already selling SATA 6.0GB/s port containing harddrives when it is already known that harddrives aren't even saturating 3.0GB/s(even server grade). What is the point of this?

After doing a little research about it's capabilities I've come to realize it's meets all the requirements that I was looking for. Unfortunately, being primarily a MS Administrator, I'm having many issues trying to successfully getting it up and running. Is there anyone or any place that has a step-by-step tutorial on how to do this? I love the prospect of using Open Source software, but need some help jumping this particular hurdle. I'm trying to use CentOS for the OS but I'm open to alternatives if thats what it takes to get this system up and running.

• Opening tabs in Google Chrome crashes my system

  When I open tabs to sites such as BBC iPlayer I have about a 4/5 chance that it will crash my entire system. The system can remain unresponsive for up to 30 mins or as little as 2. This has only happened recently and is becoming very annoying as the rest of my system can be running perfectly fine then I open a tab and it hangs. It isn't always flash media webpages so I have ruled that out and I have check my addons opened them in incognito mode, done all the usual error checking.

  If you open (not save) a Word attachment in Windows Mail, then it will open the document up in Microsoft Word. This is saved somewhere, and you can edit the file and save it (i.e. no "save as" dialog appears). If you then close Word without explicitly saving the file somewhere, how do you then find the edited file? (Assuming that it can be found, and isn't automatically deleted). Windows Search does not find the file (presumably because it's in the folders that are excluded from search).

  I recently formatted an HP G62 Laptop and installed all drivers from the HP site that should be installed for this model. But i noticed a very strange behavior, using Coretemp, the temp is always above 50 (on idle) and reaches 70 very quickly sometimes (Critical is 90) If i open youtube or skype alone, i can get temperatures as high as 83. Normally it was around 32 (on idle) and reaches 70 when i open games but not youtube.... I have a i3 processor and AMD graphics so i am wondering if somehow it's a graphics card issue (since i3 has integrated graphics as far as i know) Device manager shows only AMD graphics card tho, not sure if i3 graphics should appear here too. Any ideas what i might have forgotten to do after the format ?

• Possible capacitor plague - need help identifying

  I've been having some PC power issues lately, and I think I've tracked it down to a bad power supply. Lately, when I'm on my PC it will often restart without warning, displaying "Hypertransport sync flood error occurred last boot." once POST finishes. I've googled the error, but can't come to a definitive conclusion as to what's causing it. I've seen posts suggesting that it might be a power supply issue, but nothing conclusive. Here's what I've done so far: -I haven't installed anything suspect within the last 3 months. -I do overclock just a tiny bit, so I tried raising the voltages a little. That didn't work so I brought both CPU multiplier and voltages all back to their default settings, but that didn't solve the problem either. The problem still occurs. -AV scanned the whole system, nothing suspect. -I suspected that it might be a bad power supply so I cracked that open and found the following: I think it might be cap plague, but I'm not sure. It looks more like glue TBH. Could someone help me figure out what might be wrong with this PC? EDIT: Sometimes, after these restarts, I noticed that the GPU fan doesn't spin up, and the single rear case fan that just happens to be connected to the same molex Y-cable as the GFX card doesn't spin up either. Anything to that? EDIT 2: I do use the system quite heavily, but I don't know how that will factor into this. I often play Diablo 3 and EVE Online at the same time, frequently alt-tabbing between the two. I also have Firefox open in the background, sometimes with several tabs, and if I feel like it, I'll mute the in-game sound and open foobar2000 for better music. Could it be that I'm just pushing this thing too hard? EDIT 3: I also noticed something odd. Right before I experience these restarts, my monitor would suffer from very faint lines of static moving across the screen. The monitor is still very much useable, but it is very annoying. Following the restart it disappears, and then would gradually re-appear over the next few days, and then restarts again. I find it to be very odd. I know that i can use the following to open/update the view of a file, but than i loose focus to the Preview.app. open -a Preview foo.pdf I guess there might be some clever Apple Script commands to do so but so far i didn't find the right one. Alternatively i would be interested into transfering the focus back to my current app directly after the update. I need this in order to update Preview.app's view of a pdf through a vi autocmd after i update the pdf according to changes in a tex file i am editing. Like I've 1 group of 10 dvds only with Fonts etc. I want to read the content into a Database called "Fonts'". Another group of 5 DVD's with Stockimages, and I want to read all 5 DVDs into the Database "Stock Images". Then I want this software to be able to open Database "Stock Images", I want to be able to browse DVD 1 - 5 and to see DVD 1 - 5's contents without having the DVD's in the optical drive.

• Need advice on which PCI SATA Controller Card to Purchase

  I have a major issue with the build of a machine I am trying to get up and running. My goal is to create a file server that will service the needs of my software development, personal media storage and streaming/media server needs, as well as provide a strong platform for backing up all this data in a routine, cron-job oriented German efficiency sort of way. The issue is a simple one - all my drives are SATA drives and my motherboard controller only contains 4 ports. Solving the issue has proven to be an unmitigated nightmare. I would like advice on the purchase of the following: 4 Port internal SATA / 2 Port external eSATA PCI SATA Controller Card that has the following features and/or advantages: It must function. If I plug it in and attach drives, I expect my system to still make it to the Operating System login screen. It must function on CentOS, and I mean it must function WELL and with MINIMAL hassle. If hassle is unavoidable, there shall be CLEAR CUT and EASY TO FOLLOW instructions on how to install drivers and other supporting software. I do not need nor want fakeRAID - I will be setting up any RAID configurations from within the operating system. Now, if I am able to find such a mythical device, I would be eternally grateful to whomever would be able to point me in the right direction, a direction which I assume will be paved with yellow bricks. I am prepared to pay a considerable sum of money (as SATA controller cards go) and so paying anywhere between 60 to 120 dollars will not be an issue whatsoever. Does such a magical device exist? • Problem with USB drivers (Windows-XP)

  I obtained the drivers from the manufacturer for my HT-Link NEC USB 2.0 2-port Cardbus card. When I plugged in the card before I got the drivers, 3 new entries showed up in the Device Manager - two "NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller" and one "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB Host controller." With the card plugged in, I uninstalled those two drivers. I then removed the card. I copied the new drivers to c:\windows\system32\drivers and the .inf file to c:\windows\inf. I also copied the drivers & inf to a new directory called c:\windows\drivers\ousb2. I reinserted the card. Windows automatically installed the same drivers as before. I selected 'update driver' on the "NEC PCI to USB..." entry and didn't see any other options. I then selected 'have disk' and pointed to c:\windows\drivers\ousb2 and got a message "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." I then selected 'update driver' on the "Standard Enhanced PCI to USB...," and manually selected "USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Windows then automatically found a USB root hub, and I manually selected "USB 2.0 Root Hub Device" (OWC 4/15/2003 2.1.3.1). Now there are two sections in the Device Manager titled "Universal Serial Bus controllers." I plugged in my external USB hard disk adapter, and "USB Mass Storage Device" was added to the first set. (I unplugged the hard disk adapter first...) The hard disk adapter still doesn't work in that Cardbus card with the new drivers. I don't think the above looks right - a second set of USB controllers listed in the Device Manager, and the NEC entries still in the first set, and the the USB mass storage device still in the first set. Any help appreciated. (Windows XP PRO SP3 w/all current updates.)

• Error running phusion passenger in standalone mode

  I'm trying to run standalone phusion passenger so that I can run different ruby rvm configurations on the same host. I already have ruby and passenger running fine on this host. I am following the instructions here. When I run standalone passenger the first time, it appears to successfully install nginx.   I downloaded a php framework and has started to make a website using that. Sometimes I need to look at the source of that framework and every time I open a file I haven't opened before I get this message: “somefile.php” is a script application which was downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it? That is ok and nice I suppose, but I am getting tired of it. Is there a way I can fix all the files in my web directory so that the os somehow forgets the files are from the Internet or something like that?

Does anyone know if there is a way to cause the digi to close/release a user's connection after an period of idle time and if possible, where that time can be specified?
