  • How to install OpenOffice 3.1 in Headless Mode?

    I need to setup OpenOffice in a linux box that will never have X installed. Every time I run the setup program of the OpenOffice installer it complains that the system does not have an X Terminal. I am using OOo_3.1.0_LinuxIntel_install_wJRE_en-US.tar. I have done this headless install for version 2.4, but we are having some performance issues and we will like to test the 3.1 version. The rpm -i *rpm does not work, since it is also looking for libgnome inside it. We are trying to install the system in a CenOS 5.1. Any ideas are welcome?

  • Fix bad blocks on Mac hard disk

    I have a hard disk that I scanned with TechTool and it reports one bad block. As far as I can tell, TechTool only scans and reports a failure. It doesn't fix anything. Back in the day, Norton Disk Doctor did the job of scanning and flagging (remapping) bad blocks on the Mac. Today we have various tools for fixing up HFS+ directory errors (Disk Utility, fsck, DiskWarrior, TechTool), but I don't know of any tool that will do a surface scan and fix the bad blocks too. What software is available for this? If I know the address of the bad block, is there a low-level terminal utility for marking it?

  • Query performance counters from powershell

    I am trying this script to query performance counters in different localized windows server versions. http://www.powershellmagazine.com/2013/07/19/querying-performance-counters-from-powershell/ Everything works as in the article, well partially :-) I am trying to access a counter ID 3906 Terminal Services Session and works well for English windows. However for example in French and German that counter doesn't exist under that ID. I think I figured to find the exact counter under ID 1548 in french and German, but that ID in English is something completely different. Anybody seen this behavior on the performance counters?

    I have to set an environment variable called GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS to fix the problem with Eclipse buttons in Ubuntu. To set the environment variable, I added the following line to ~/.pam_environment. GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS DEFAULT=true Surprisingly, the environment variable doesn't get set when I echo $GDK_NATIVE_WINDOWS in a terminal. However, all other environment variables that I've listed in ~/.pam_environment are set properly. Besides, when I switch to a tty, e.g. Alt+Ctrl+F1, the environment variable gets set correctly. Can anyone tell what's wrong with setting this environment variable in ~/.pam_environment?

  • Can't set 1280x1024 on Ubuntu with Nvidia Geforce 8400 GS

    Ubuntu doesn't offer 1280x1024 but that's what my monitor has -- I want to set that resolution but need help doing so. Ubuntu offers 1360x768, 1152x864, 1024x768 when using the Nvidia driver version 180. This is Ubuntu 9.04 installed as "Wubi" through Windows, I believe it's the amd64 version. Google gave me this precise explanation which is complete latin to me; I'm a Windows guy and not familiar with Terminal. These SU questions also don't provide answers, hence this new question. I hope you can help, and I will provide additional info if required.

I have added another endpoint to expose the new contract operations.     I'm building the 2nd iteration of a web-based CRM+CMS for a franchise service business in ASP.NET MVC 2. I need to control access to each franchise's services based on the roles a user is assigned for that franchise. 4 examples: Receptionist should be able to book service jobs in for her "Atlantic Seaboard" franchise, but not do any reporting. Technician should be able to alter service jobs, but not modify invoices. Managers should be able to apply discount to invoices for jobs within their stores. Owner should be able to pull reports for any franchises he owns. Where should franchise-level access control fit in between the Data - Services - Web layer? If it belongs in my Controllers, how should I best implement it? For the sake of proper testing and better separation between data and presentation, I decided to implement the repository pattern as seen in Rob Conery's MVC Storefront series. Controller Implementation Access Control with [Authorize] attribute If there was just one franchise involved, I could simply limit access to a controller action like so: [Authorize(Roles="Receptionist, Technician, Manager, Owner")] public ActionResult CreateJob(Job job) { ... } And since franchises don't just pop up over night, perhaps this is a strong case to use the new Areas feature in ASP.NET MVC 2? Or would this lead to duplicate Views? Controllers, URL Routing & Areas Assuming Areas aren't used, what would be the best way to determine which franchise's data is being accessed? I thought of this: {franchise}/{controller}/{action}/{id} or is it better to determine a job's franchise in a Details(...) action and limit a user's action with [Authorize]: {job}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} {invoice}/{id}/{action}/{subaction} which makes more sense if any user could potentially have access to more than one franchise without cluttering the URL with a {franchise} parameter.   • rm failing inside cron script

    I have a cron job calling a bash script which runs fine, except for one line inside it that is suppose to remove all fines in a directory. The result of this line is always 'no such file or directory' even though I have verified (many times) that there are files in that directory. The line in question is as simply: rm /dir1/dir2/dir3/* The script works fine when run manually in the terminal, so it must be something about how the cron is run. I've tried giving 'dir3' and all the files inside it every permission possible, so it shouldn't be a permission problem. (The directory and files are also owned by the user). I've tried specifing 'SHELL=/bin/bash' inside 'crontab'. There is no sticky bit set and there is no alias on the rm command. Interestingly changing the 'rm' command to 'ls' gives the same negative result (unless you remove the trailing '*', and then that works). What am I missing here?

  • Permission denied when copying on a fileshare in Finder, but copying via command line works

    I'm trying to copy files on a SMB fileshare. When I attempt to copy the files in Finder, I get the following error: The operation can’t be completed because you don’t have permission to access some of the items. Copying via Terminal.app (using a simple cp command) works just fine.   • Running Mac OSX 10.6 my users home directory is wrong

    Somehow my home directory on my mac machine has been changed and I'm not sure how to go about changing it back, I'm more of a linux guy and mac has some other mechanism for storing that information. Basically when I log into the machine normally than start a terminal window. I start in the /Users/erik_miller directory, which is my home directory, but when I run some this like cd ~ The machine tries to change to /Users/erik_miller. Yes, the same path with a period on the end. I can change my $HOME environment variable for the session, but the next time I start the machine it reverts. So, I think if I can find where that information is stored I can just change it there and hopefully all will be well.

    After creating a db using Database Configuration Assistant, I go to Enterprise Manager, log into it, and it tells me, that java.lang.Exception: Exception in sending Request :: null. OracleDBConsole for this db, and iSQLPlus services are started. When I run %ORACLE_HOME%\bin\emctl status dbconsole, it says, EM Daemon is not running. How do I deal with this?

  • Mac Mini's internet very slow, every other device fine (PC, iPhone, Xbox 360)

    I recently haven't used my Mac Mini for about 5 days (however it was left on). I seem to be able to connect and get great download / upload speeds through my PC, Xbox 360, iPhone and parents' laptop. However, my Mac Mini is very slow. OS X's Mail.app is downloading mail at 0.4kbps and then dropping to 0. Skype file transfers are doing the same. Browsing the net is a terrible experience. It is taking 30 seconds or more to download basic pages. All of my devices connect wirelessly to a Netgear router / modem. I have tried giving the Mac Mini a manual IP, and renew DHCP lease, as well as flush DNS in Terminal. I have also rebooted the router / modem twice, and the Mac Mini twice. Do you know what could be causing this? Thanks

    When I go to localhost/~admin/ or 127.0.0.1/~admin/ my browser says: "Forbidden You don't have permission to access /~admin/ on this server." How do I change this?!??!?! It's driving me nuts! when I go to localhost or 127.0.0.1/ my browser says: "It Works!". I'm running mac osx 10.8. I created aliases in my .bash_profile file so that I can start, restart and stop Apache quickly: alias startApache="sudo apachectl start" alias stopApache="sudo apachectl stop" alias restartApache="sudo apachectl restart" In my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file I turned on php5: LoadModule php5_module libexec/apache2/libphp5.so I also made sure to change the permissions for my admin.conf file with this command in terminal: sudo chmod 644 username.conf This is my /etc/apache2/users/admin.conf: <Directory "/Users/admin/Sites/"> Options Indexes MultiViews AllowOverride All Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory>

  • Changed folder contents not updating in Finder (OS X 10.8)

    I've been having this problem for a number of days now. When I update the contents of a folder using terminal commands, by decompressing archives, or by using "Save As", the affected folder often fails to reflect these changes. Sometimes it takes quite a while for any files to be shown, even if the total size of the folder is fairly small (< 10 MB). I'm running an '09 MacBook Pro 13", so it isn't the newest system, but it certainly has enough oomph to display a list of files in a folder. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

  • Exchange Disconnecting on EHLO with remote telnet

    When I go to the local terminal on my Exchange box (SBS 2008) I can do this: telnet 127.0.0.1 25 220 Exchange banner here EHLO example.com 250 Server name However when I go from another box, or from the actual IP of the server I get this: telnet 192.168.21.20 25 220 Exchange banner here EHLO example.com 421 4.4.1 Connection timed out Connection to host lost. The odd thing is, this server is currently in production and working fine (receiving mail for our entire domain). But my C# programs can't send mail to it (they get this same error). Any ideas?
