• F# and .Net versions

  I'm writing a program in F# at the moment, which I specified in the Visual Studio project setup to target .Net 3.5, this being the highest offered, on the theory that I might as well get the best available. Then I tried just now running the compiled program on an XP box, not expecting it to work, but just to see what would happen. Unsurprisingly I just got an error message demanding an appropriate version of the framework, but surprisingly it wasn't 3.5 it demanded, but 2.0.50727. An additional puzzle is the version of MSBuild I'm using to compile the release version of the program, which I found in the framework 3.5 directory but claims to be framework 2.0 and build engine 3.5. I just guessed it was the right version of MSBuild to use because it seemed to correspond with the highest framework version F# seems to be able to target, but should I be using a different version? Anyone have any idea what's going on? • Website (jQuery) consistently crashes Internet Explorer (REALLY STUCK!)

  Hey Guys. I posted this question yesterday, but haven't had a response. Basically, I'm totally stuck and clueless over crashing in Internet Explorer. The website now works fine in all browsers except internet explorer. The website is heavily reliant on jQuery and as far as I'm aware, I cant spot anything wrong with the script. Internet Explorer displays no errors and I don't know what I can possibly change. It displays fine, which would suggest that its nothing up with the CSS or HTML? I'm fairly sure it has to be the script, because it only crashes when you hover over one of the mouseover links. I'm already over the deadline and time is ticking! Its driving me crazy. • Why won't .attr('checked','checked') set?

  I have the following snippet of code (I'm using jQuery 1.4.2): $.post('/Ads/GetAdStatsRow/', { 'ad_id': id }, function(result) { $('#edit_ads_form tbody').prepend(result); $(result).find('td.select-ad input').attr('checked','checked').click(); }); Assume that the post works correctly and returns a correct pre-built <tr> with some <td>s. Here's the weirdness: the $(result).find() line finds the correct input (which is a checkbox, as it's the only input in the cell) and runs the chained click() function correctly, but it REFUSES to set the box as checked, which I need to happen. Here's a crazy twist, too... when I get super specific and change the $(result).find() line to this (the id of the checkbox): $('#ad_' + id).click(); It checks the box, but doesn't run the click() function! If I set it to $('#ad_' + id).attr('checked','checked').click(); it runs the click function as though the box were checked, but the box remains unchecked, and if I do $('#ad_' + id).click().attr('checked','checked'); it does nothing at all. What in the world could be the matter with this? I'm running out of hair.... Thanks!

• x-dom-event-stream in Opera 10 Only Working on First Event

  I have a python script (in the CherryPy framework) that sends Event: and data: text as this Opera blog post describes to a client browser. The javascript that recieves the x-dom-event-stream content is almost identical to what they show in the blog post. However, the browser displays only the first event sent. Anyone know what I'm missing? I tried a few older versions of Opera and found that it works in Opera 9.52 but not in any newer versions. What did they change? So I know the output is in the correct format and that the stream works at all.

• C++ Swig Python (Embedded Python in C++) works in Release but not in Debug

  Platform: Windows 7, 64 bit (x64), Visual Studio 2008 I chose Python & Swig binding as the scripting environment of the application. As a prototype, created a simple VS solution with main() which initializes Python (Py_Initalize, Py_setPyHome, etc) & executes test.py. In the same solution created another project which is a DLL of a simple class. Used SWIG to wrap this class. This DLL is the _MyClasses.pyd. test.py creates the objects of my class & calls its member functions. All this works like a charm in the Release mode. But does not work in Debug mode (even tried banging my head on the laptop ;-) ). Output of my work looks like this (in both release & debug): x64 -debug - _MyClasses.pyd - MyClasses.py - test.exe - test.py - python26.dll - python26_d.dll Note that the debug version is linked against python26_d.lib. Had to build python myself for this! test.py import MyClasses print "ello" m = MyClasses.Male("John Doe", 25) print m.getType() Male is the C++ class. The problem: Traceback (most recent call last): File "test.py", line 6, in <module> import MyClasses File "...\x64\Debug\MyClasses.py", line 25, in <module> _MyClasses = swig_import_helper() File "...\x64\Debug\MyClasses.py", line 17, in swig_imp ort_helper import _MyClasses ImportError: No module named _MyClasses [15454 refs] I am used to Makefiles & am new to Visual Studio. • Guaranteed way to find the ildasm.exe and ilasm.exe files regardless of .NET version/environment?

  Is there a way to programmatically get the FileInfo/Path of the ildasm.exe/ilasm.exe executables? I'm attempting to decompile and recompile a dll/exe file appropriately after making some alterations to it (I'm guessing PostSharp does something similar to alter the IL after the compilation). I found a blog post that pointed to: var pfDir = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolders.ProgramFiles)); var sdkDir = Path.Combine(pfDir, @"Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\bin"); ... However, when I ran this code the directory did not exist (mainly because my SDK version is 7.1), so on my local machine the correct path is @"Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\bin". How do I ensure I can actually find the ildasm.exe? Similarly, I found another blog post on how to get access to ilasm.exe as: string windows = Environment.GetFolderPath(Environment.SpecialFolder.System); string fwork = Path.Combine(windows, @"..\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727"); ... While this works, I noticed that I have Framework and Framework64, and within Framework itself I have all of the versions up to v4.0.30319 (same with Framework64). So, how do I know which one to use? Should it be based on the .NET Framework version I'm targetting? Summary: How do I appropriately guarantee to find the correct path to ildasm.exe? How do I appropriately select the correct ilasm.exe to compile?

Below is my current understanding. I think the computer is a big general-purpose Turing machine. Each program we write is a small specific-purpose Turing machine. The classical Turing machine do its job based on the input and its current state inside and so do our programs. Let's take a running program (a process) as an example. We know that in the process's address space, there's areas for stack, heap, and code. A classical Turing machine doesn't have the ability to remember many things, so we borrow the concept of stack from the push-down automaton. The heap and stack areas contains the state of our specific-purpose Turing machine (our program). The code area represents the logic of this small Turing machine. And various I/O devices supply input to this Turing machine.

• Extending spring based app

  I have a spring-based Web Service. I now want to build a sort of plugin for it that extends it with beans. What I have now in web.xml is: <context-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value>/WEB-INF/classes/*-configuration.xml</param-value> </context-param> My core app has main-configuration.xml which declares its beans. My plugin app has plugin-configuration.xml which declares additional beans. Now when I deploy, my build deploys plugin.jar into /WEB-INF/lib/ and copies plugin-configuration.xml into /WEB-INF/classes/ all under main.war. This is all fine (although I think there could be a better solution), but when I develop the plugin, I don't want to have two projects in Eclipse with dependencies. I wish to have main.jar that I include as a library. However, web.xml from main.jar isn't automatically discovered. How can I do this? Bean injection? Bean discovery of some sort? Something else? Note: I expect to have multiple different plugins in production, but development of each of them will be against pure main.jar Thank you.

You'll need that for the next step. • NAnt not running NUnit tests

  I'm using NUnit 2.5 and NAnt 0.85 to compile a .NET 3.5 library. Because NAnt 0.85 doesn't support .NET 3.5 out of the box, I've added an entry for the 3.5 framework to NAnt.exe.config. 'MyLibrary' builds, but when I hit the "test" target to execute the NUnit tests, none of them seem to run. [nunit2] Tests run: 0, Failures: 0, Not run: 0, Time: 0.012 seconds Here are the entries in my NAnt.build file for the building and running the tests: <target name="build_tests" depends="build_core"> <mkdir dir="Target" /> <csc target="library" output="Target\Test.dll" debug="true"> <references> <include name="Target\MyLibrary.dll"/> <include name="Libraries\nunit.framework.dll"/> </references> <sources> <include name="Test\**\*.cs" /> </sources> </csc> </target> <target name="test" depends="build_tests"> <nunit2> <formatter type="Plain" /> <test assemblyname="Target\Test.dll" /> </nunit2> </target> Is there some versioning issue I need to be aware of? Test.dll runs fine in the NUnit GUI. The testing dll is definitely being found, because if I move it I get the following error: Failure executing test(s). If you assembly is not build using NUnit 2.2.8.0... Could not load file or assembly 'Test' or one of its dependencies... I would be grateful if anyone could point me in the right direction or describe a similary situation they have encountered. • jQuery - Not sure which method to use, closest() and parent() don't work.

  Hello, again. :) God i feel like i'm spamming stackoverflow, this is my 3rd post for today. Sorry, heh. I even posted a question regarding this before, kind of, but i've changed the code a bit since so i thought it was better to post a new question. $('.pmlist ul li h4 .toggle').click(function() { $(this).closest('.meddel').toggle(250); }); That's what i've got now. The reason why the closest() method isn't working is because the div .meddel is just next to the h4 element. And closest() only crawls right up the DOM tree, ignoring other child elements. Right? parent() works almost the same and doesn't work either. And as i only want to toggle the closest .meddel div in the element, i need something that, yeah justs grabs the nearest one, and not all of them. When the interent and html was new, one could find examples of how to build a website on a few trusted web sites. The same web sites might not be the best choice for looking for examples for Silverlight, I guess. What are the best web sites where you can look at examples -- and most importantly -- look at the source code of some examples of Silverlight? Back when MFC existed as a option that programmers might use to develop windows applications, a coder could look at a huge list of sample code and step through that code to find something that somewhat did what he was looking for and use that example code to build his own app. Is there anything like that for Silverlight? I have found the http://gallery.expression.microsoft.com/ Expression Blend Gallery and I have found the http://www.silverlight.net/community/samples/silverlight-samples/ Silverlight dot net community samples.   Hello I'd like to build a "Rails Brick" using a Sheevaplug from Marvell (O.S. is Ubuntu out of the box but You can install other distributions on It). It will be a home server and a silent, low cost (99$) low energy development machine. I'd like to add rails RVM, lot of gems, git-based heroku like deployment, passenger + nginx. This way I could have a portable server with a complete development environment and maybe I could find a hosting company where I can co-locate a grid of this devices or I can sell It as a simple little server for 10 or less users offices, with some centralized rails services (I think to a CMS, a BLOG, a WIKI, calendar or whatever this little jewel could afford). The usb port could make It a print server too or a UMTS link to the web via HUAWEI like usb UMTS keys. Can you give me some hint about: Is this project a crazy-close-to-failure idea? Why? which gem would You include? which rails open source app would you suggest? I have already an Excito Bubba Server at home, I saw the TonidoPlug so It came up in my mind to build something similiar but Rails based (Bubba is PHP based, TonidoPlug I don't know but It does not seems a Rails thing).

  I asked on SO a few days ago what was the simplest quickest way to build a wrapper around a recently completed database. I took the advice and used sqlmetal to build linq classes around my database design. Now I am having two problems. One, I don't know LINQ. And, two, I have been shocked to realize how hard it is to learn. I have a book on LINQ (Linq In Action by Manning) and it has helped some but at the end of the day it is going to take me a couple of weeks to get traction and I need to make some progress on my project today. I have a console app. The main table is the SupplyModel table. Most of the other tables are child tables of the SupplyModel table. I want to iterate through each of Supply Model records. I want to grab the data for a supply model and then DoStuff with the data. And I also need to iterate through the child records, for each supply model, for example the NumberedInventories and DoStuff with that as well. I want to only iterate the SupplyModels that are have IDs that are in an array of strings containing the IDs. I need help doing this in VB rather than C# if possible. Thanks for your help. Seth

• How to code a URL shortener?

  I want to create a URL shortener service where you can write a long URL into an input field and the service shortens the URL to "http://www.example.org/abcdef". Instead of "abcdef" there can be any other string with six characters containing a-z, A-Z and 0-9. That makes 56 trillion possible strings. My approach: I have a database table with three columns: id, integer, auto-increment long, string, the long URL the user entered short, string, the shortened URL (or just the six characters) I would then insert the long URL into the table. Then I would select the auto-increment value for "id" and build a hash of it. This hash should then be inserted as "short". But what sort of hash should I build? Hash algorithms like MD5 create too long strings. I don't use these algorithms, I think. A self-built algorithm will work, too. My idea: For "http://www.google.de/" I get the auto-increment id 239472. Then I do the following steps: short = ''; if divisible by 2, add "a"+the result to short if divisible by 3, add "b"+the result to short ... until I have divisors for a-z and A-Z. That could be repeated until the number isn't divisible any more. Do you think this is a good approach? Do you have a better idea?
