• Star Trek inspired home automation visualisation

  I’ve always been a more or less active fan of Star Trek. During the construction phase of my house I started coding a GUI for controlling the house which has an EIB. Just for fun I designed a version inspired by the LCARS design used in Star Trek TNG and showed this to my wife. I showed her several designs before but this was the only one, she really liked. So I decided to go on with this. I started a C# WinForms application. The software runs on a wall mounted Shuttle Barebone-PC. First plan was an industrial panel-pc but the processor was too slow. The now-used Atom is ok. I started with the LCARS-controls found on Codeproject. Since the classic LCARS design divides the screen into two parts this tended to be impracticable, so I used my own design For now the software is able to: Switch lights/wall outlets Show current temperatures for all room controllers Show outside temperature with a 24h trend chart Show the status of the two heat pumps Provide an alarm clock (e.g. for cooking) Play internet radio streams Control absence Mute the door bell Speak status messages via speech synthesis For now, I’m working on an integration of my electric meter. The main heat pump and the electric meter are connected to my LAN. I also tried some speech recognition, but I’ve problems with the microphone. I't’s working when you are right in front of the PC, but not far away, let’s say on the other side of the room. So this is the main view. The table displays raw values which are sent over the EIB – completely useless but looks great For each floor I have a different view. Here you can see the temperatures and check the status of the lights (the buttons are blinking when a light is switched on) This is the view for the heat pump:   Next step would be to integrate a control of my squeezebox server (I use different Squeezeboxes through the house as a multiroom audio solution)

• Updating physics for animated models

  For a new game we have do set up a scene with a minimum of 30 bone animated models.(shooter) The problem is that the update process for the animated models takes too long. Thats what I do: Each character has ~30 bones and for every update tick the animation gets calculated and every bone fires a event with the new matrix. The physics receives the event with the new matrix and updates the collision shape for that bone. The time that it takes to build the animation isn't that bad (0.2ms for 30 Bones - 6ms for 30 models). But the main problem is that the physic engine (Bullet) uses a diffrent matrix for transformation and so its necessary to convert it. • Renting linux server just to make backups of my personnal data ?

  Hi all, I would like to be able to backup ALL my computers data on a Linux server. For now, I have a home server, but soon I will be travelling, without home (so no home server). I was thinking of renting a dedicated linux webserver, but this is expensive, and I don't need a fast machine "web-oriented" with mysql server and all, I just need a full SSH access (full control, and then I install my programs). Does "backup servers" exist ? Am I doing it wrong (maybe that is not a good solution) ? Note : I run Mac OS, Windows and Linux, I backup through rsync, I want full control on my backup, not an automated "magic" backup like MobileMe or anything like that. Edit : I need around 500Gb storage

• Delivering from Postfix to Exchange

  I have someone with two domains, a.com and b.com. a.com is running a postfix server on the mx host for the domain and I have total control of the server. b.com is running an exchange server on the mx host for the domain and I do not have any control of this server. They have been using b.com as their primary mail address and use the exchange calender with outlook. They want all the same functionality but want to start using a.com as primary mail address. I opened up postfix to allow relay from the ip address of the exchange server and hopefully that's enough from the outgoing side. For delivery though what can I do to forward all incoming emails to the exchange server? I have some aliases defined in /etc/aliases that should take higher priority.

• TIME column in TOP command for mysql

  When I run top on my database server I get that mysqld has been running for 4:00.51 and it continues to go up. I assume this means that one process with mysql has been running this long from other posts on here. Its not set to cumulative mode as best I can tell as the heading looks like it would change to CTIME if that be the case. What I'm wondering is if this is normal for a site that makes a lot of individual connections using PHP. I shouldn't have any long running processes that would hold on to a mysql connection for this long, only seconds at most. Am I incorrect to assume that this time relates to one connection/process running? I think usually I see it flash up and away on the TOP, not just stay there with this number increasing.

• Inspiration

  Once again, I find myself back in Seoul – ASEM Tower, 16th Floor in a mobile room. I’m busy preparing for the interview process that is about to take place for Oracle Korea’s GIP 7th (Graduate Intake Program): scheduling the first round interviews, organizing interview guidelines, educating interviewers on the process and framework and  getting all the logistics ready for the 1st round interview. Seoul or Korea rather is a fascinating place. Highly efficient, the utmost respect for seniors and results orientated. When students come in for an interview at first it was hard to tell them apart – there seems to be accepted interview attire that must be worn when attending an interview. Males and Females, all dress in black suits, with white shirts underneath – with males to wear simple and dark colored ties. During the interview, they would all sit very upright, all would bow when entering the room, place their hands on the laps and very often they would hold minimal eye contact. They would project their voice loud to portray confidence, they would talk in the Korean formal dialect at all times and will treat every question, every moment with extreme clarity and the utmost professionalism. When the interview concludes, they will all stand hands by their sides, bow 90 degrees and thank all the interviewers for their precious time and opportunity. As soon as they leave the interview room, I could hear all their sighs of relief and commended each other on their efforts. More and more I learn about the Korean culture it inspires me. Their patriotism, their respect for each, their values, their appreciation, their motivation, their desires and passion – it truly was an experience for me (even as a recruiter) and can’t help but feel truly impressed and motivated to live for every moment. • Expiry time in notify-send notifications

  On my HP computer running Ubuntu 12.04, the brightness and volume increments were much higher than I wanted. On top of that, the notification for the volume was just plain wrong (0% sound did not correspond to 0 on the progress bar). So I decided to override these options with my own commands. I used CompizConfig Settings Manager to add custom commands to the brightness and volume keys (this couldn't be done in the regular settings because these keys were handled by the BIOS, unlike normal function keys). I used xbacklight to control the brightness and amixer to control the volume. The problem is that the nice notify-send notifications don't show up when I manually set the brightness/volume, so now I have to do that myself too. However, there are two problems with notify-send: The expire time option doesn't work You have to wait until a notification is finished before the next one comes up Before I overrided the brightness/volume keys, the system was able to send notifications without these two restrictions. Notifications disappeared within 3 seconds (instead of the default 10), and if I double tapped the volume or brightness button, the progress bar would immediately change to the new brightness (instead of showing the old progress bar for 10 seconds and then showing the new one). Since the system was able to do it, I was wondering how I can achieve the same type of notifications?

• 2D platformers: why make the physics dependent on the framerate?

  "Super Meat Boy" is a difficult platformer that recently came out for PC, requiring exceptional control and pixel-perfect jumping. The physics code in the game is dependent on the framerate, which is locked to 60fps; this means that if your computer can't run the game at full speed, the physics will go insane, causing (among other things) your character to run slower and fall through the ground. Furthermore, if vsync is off, the game runs extremely fast. Could those experienced with 2D game programming help explain why the game was coded this way? Wouldn't a physics loop running at a constant rate be a better solution? (Actually, I think a physics loop is used for parts of the game, since some of the entities continue to move normally regardless of the framerate. Your character, on the other hand, runs exactly [fps/60] as fast.) What bothers me about this implementation is the loss of abstraction between the game engine and the graphics rendering, which depends on system-specific things like the monitor, graphics card, and CPU. If, for whatever reason, your computer can't handle vsync, or can't run the game at exactly 60fps, it'll break spectacularly. Why should the rendering step in any way influence the physics calculations? (Most games nowadays would either slow down the game or skip frames.) On the other hand, I understand that old-school platformers on the NES and SNES depended on a fixed framerate for much of their control and physics. Why is this, and would it be possible to create a patformer in that vein without having the framerate dependency? Is there necessarily a loss of precision if you separate the graphics rendering from the rest of the engine? Thank you, and sorry if the question was confusing.

• Design pattern for client/server sessions?

  Are there any common patterns or general guidance I can learn from for how to design a client/server system where the both the client and server must maintain some kind per-client session state? I've found any number of libraries that can help with some of the plumbing, but it's the overall design I'm wondering about. Open issues in my mind: How to structure the client/server communication so that bidirectional synchronous and asynchronous requests are possible? The server side needs to spawn a couple of per-connected-client session-long helper process. How to manage that? How to manage the mapping from a given client (and any of it's requests) to server state and helper process instances in the face of multiple clients and intermittent network connectivity. Most communication can be simple blocking request/reply, but some will be long running processing tasks that the client will want to keep tabs on. To the extent that it matters, the platform is Linux/C/C++. Not web based. Just an existing thick-client software app being modified to talk to backend servers for some tasks.

• Alsa hardware volume with PulseAudio

  Before installing pulseaudio, I was able to control volume for the front (meaning on the front panel, the "headphone" jack) and rear (meaning on the back panel, the "line out" jack) separately. When I installed pulseaudio, it became possible to control volume for each playing process separately, but the individual controls for outputs disappeared. While the default device in alsa now routes via pulseaudio, the sysdefault device provides access to the hardware. But kmix does not seem to let me show them now. Is there any way to beat kmix into showing the sysdefault device too? Or something else X-based that would not fight with kmix too much? The system is Debian Jessie (testing) amd64, updated, KDE version 4:4.13.3-1.

  I've been using OpenGL hardware acceleration in programs such as Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Adobe After Effects CS4. I've noticed that recently the options for OpenGL previews are disabled because my graphics card seems to not support OpenGL. But that doesn't make any sense whatsoever. I know for a fact that my graphics card does have support for OpenGL and it worked before. I checked for driver updates just the other day. Anybody know what's going on? • How to protect an OS X Server from an anautorized physical connection?

  Hi I have an OS X 10.6 server, which I administer via SSH and VNC (via SSH tunnel). I can't leave it at the login window since then VNC connections are refused. Therefore I currently leave it logged with my user account. Since it doesn't have a monitor attached, it doesn't go into screen saver mode, which means it doesn't require a password to retake control. This means it is very easy for anyone connecting a keyboard/mouse and monitor to take control of the system. The screen saver password protection, which I can't get to activate, unlike the system's login window, is perfectly compatible with VNC connections. How could I prevent such direct access to the server without connecting a monitor and without blocking my ability to connect with VNC? Thanks!

  I am recently working on a project aiming at evaluating whether an android app crashes or not. The evaluation process is 1.Collect the logs(which record the execution process of an app). 2.Generate formulas to predict the result (formulas is generated by GP) 3.Evaluate the logs by formulas Now I can produce formulas, but for convenience for users, I want to translate formulas into form of natural language and tell users why crash happened.(I think it looks like "inverse natural language processing".) To explain the idea more clearly, imagine you got a formula like this: 155 - count(onKeyDown) >= 148 It's obvious that if count(onKeyDown) 7, the result of "155 - count(onKeyDown) = 148" is false, so the log contains more than 7 onKeyDown event would be predicted "Failed". I want to show users that if onKeyDown event appears more than 7 times(155-148=7), this app will crash.   I have Openvpn, and it worked great when I used it on PC (Windows 8), then I copied all files (Certificates and config) to an Android 4 phone to use them.
