• Git Branch Model for iOS projects with one developer

  I'm using git for an iOS project, and so far have the following branch model: feature_brach(usually multiple) -> development -> testing -> master Feature-branches are short-lived, just used to add a feature or bug, then merged back in to development and deleted. Development is fairly stable, but not ready for production. Testing is when we have a stable version with enough features for a new update, and we ship to beta testers. Once testing is finished, it can be moved back into development or advanced into master. The problem, however, lies in the fact that we can't instantly deploy. On iOS, it can be several weeks between the time a build is released and when it actually hits users. I always want to have a version of the code that is currently on the market in my repo, but I also have to have a place to keep the current stable code to be sent for release. So: where should I keep stable code where should I keep the code currently on the market and where should I keep the code that is in review with Apple, and will be (hopefully) put on the market soon? Also, this is a one developer team, so collaboration is not totally necessary, but preferred because there may be more members in the future.

• Ubuntu 12.04 startup is slow and dmesg output seems to lose several seconds

  I use ubuntu on Dell Inspiron n4050.I have upgraded to ubuntu 12.04 from 10.04. But now I find the system startup is a little slow and plymouth only show purple screen without logo during startup. • New functionality in TFS Build Manager &ndash; Managing Triggers and Build Resources

  Yesterday we pushed out a new release (August 2012) of the Community TFS Build Extension, including a new version of the Community TFS Build Manager (1.0.4.6) The two big new features in the Build Manager in this release are: Set Triggers It is now possible to select one or more build definitions and update the triggers for them in one simple operation: You’ll note that we have started collapsing the context menu a bit, the list of commands are getting long! When selecting the Trigger command, you’ll see a dialog where the options should be self-explanatory: The only thing missing here is the Scheduled trigger option, you’ll have to do that using Team Explorer for now.   Manage Build Resources The other feature is that it is now possible to view the build controllers and agents in your current collection and also perform some actions against them. The new functionality is available by select the Build Resources item in the drop down menu: Selecting this, you’ll see a (sort of) hierarchical view of the build controllers and their agents: In this view you can quickly see all the resources and their status. You can also view the build directory of each build agent and the tags that are associated with them. On the action menu, you can enable and disable both agents and controllers (several at a time), and you can also select to remove them. By selecting Manage, you’ll be presented with the standard Manage Controller dialog from Visual Studio where you can set the rest of the properties. Hopefully we’ll be able to implement most of the existing functionality so that we can remove that menu option Our plan is to add more functionality to this view, such as adding new agents/controllers, restarting build service hosts, maybe view diagnostic information such as disk space and error logs.   Hope you’ll find the new functionality useful. • Change AccountName/LoginName for a SharePoint User (SPUser)

  Consider the following: We have an account named MYDOMAIN\eholz. This accounts Active Directory Login Name changes to MYDOMAIN\eburrell Now this user was a active user in a Sharepoint 2010 team Site, and had a userProfile using the Account name MYDOMAIN\eholz. Since the AD LoginName changed to eburrell hence we need to update the Sharepoint User (SPUser object) as well update the userprofile to reflect the new account name. To update the Sharepoint User LoginName we can run the following stsadm command on the Server: STSADM –o migrateuser –oldlogin MYDOMAIN\eholz –newlogin MYDOMAIN\eburrell –ignoresidhistory However to update the Sharepoint 2010 UserProfile, i first tried running a Incremental/Full Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service… this did not work. To enable me to update the AccountName field (which is a read only field) of the UserProfile, I had to first delete the User Profile for MYDOMAIN\eholz and then run a FULL Synchronization using the User Profile Synchronization service which synchronizes the Sharepoint User Profiles with the AD profiles. Update: if you just run the STSADM –o migrateuser command… the profile also gets updated automatically. so all you need is to run the stsadm –o migrate user command and you dont need to delete and recreate the User Profile

• What is the/Is there a right way to tell management that our code sucks?

  Our code is bad. It might not have always been considered bad, but it is bad and is only going downhill. I started fresh out of college less than a year ago, and many of the things in our code puzzle me beyond belief. At first I figured that as the new guy I should keep my mouth shut until I learned a little more about our code base, but I've seen plenty to know that it's bad. Some of the highlights: We still use frames (try getting something out of a querystring, almost impossible) VBScript Source Safe We 'use' .NET - by that I mean we have .net wrappers that call COM DLLs making it almost impossible to debug easily Everything is basically one giant function Code is not maintainable. Each page has multiple files that are created every time a new page is made. The main page basically does Response.Write() a bunch of times to render the HTML (runat="server"? no way). After that there can be a lot of logic on the client side (VBScript), and finally the page submits to itself (often time storing many things in hidden fields) where it then posts to a processing page which can do things such as save the data to the database. The specifications we get are laughable. Often times they call for things like "auto-populate field X with either field Y or field Z" with no indication of when to choose field Y or field Z. I'm sure some of this is a result of not being employed at a software company, but I feel as if people writing software should at least care about the quality of their code. I can't even imagine that if I were to bring something up that anything would be done soon, as there is a large deadline looming, but we are continuing to write bad code and use bad practices. What can I do? How do I even bring these issues up? 75% of my team agree with me and have brought up these issues in the past, yet nothing gets changed.

• Unreal Torunament (UT99) no sound in 12.04?

  I've been trying to get sound working in Unreal Torunament for a couple of days now. I'm using the native Unreal Tournament version, not wine or something like that. I have sound in all other games and media applications that I have tried. In older ubuntu versions it worked fine. I'm now using kubuntu 12.04, I have all the alsa-oss and oss-compat packages installed. I have followed most of the advice out there, and it all seems to fall on padsp and aoss. My problem, however, is that even when trying to use padsp or aoss, I can't get any sound at all. (Note UT has two output modes: ALAudio and Generic(OSS), I have tried both). Is there some configuration required to use padsp or aoss correctly? I have ran it like padsp ./ut and aoss ./ut If using the AL backend in UT I get (both aoss and padsp give this): Bound to ALAudio.so open /dev/dsp: Invalid argument Audio initialization failed. If using the OSS backend in UT I get (both aoss and padsp give this): Bound to Audio.so Failed to open audio device. Audio initialization failed. Note that so far, I have gotten absolutely no sound. • How to learn to deliver quality software designs when working on a tight deadline?

  I read many books about how to design great software, but I kind of struggle to come up with a good design decisions when it comes to business apps, especially when the timeframe is tough. In the company I currently work for, the following situation happen all the time: my teamlead tells me that there's a task to do, I call some guy or a girl from business who tells me exactly what is it they want, and then I start coding. The task always fits in some existing application (we do only web apps or web services), usually it's purpose is to pull data from one datasource and put into the other one, with some business logic attached in the process. I start coding and then, after spending some time on a problem, my code didn't work as expected - either because of technical mistake or my lack of knowledge of the domain. The business is ringing me 2-3 times a day to hurry me up. I ask my team lead to help, he comes up, sees my code and goes like 'What's this?'. Then he throws away about half of my code, including all the design decisions I made, writes 2-3 methods that does the job (each of them usually 200-300 lines long or more, by the way), and task is complete, code works as it should have. The guy is smarter than me, obviously, and I'm aware of that. My goal is to be better software developer, that means write better code, not finish the job quicker with some crappy code. And the thing is, when I have enough time to tackle a problem, I can come up with a design that is good (in my opinion, of course), but I fall short to do so when I'm on a tight deadline.   After upgrade from 10.04 to 12.04, I cannot boot with linux 3.2.0-24-generic-pae: process gets frozen in a xubuntu initialization screen (I had qimo installed). If I try the recovery mode (with the same Linux version), booting freezes after this message: Begin: Mounting root file system. If in grub menu I choose Previous Linux versions, I can boot using Linux 2.6.32-41-generic-pae. But once logged in, some things don't seem to work (apt-get update fails, update manager fails, HID menu does not provide suggestions...) (to be honest, I have no idea whether this is part of the bigger issue) Reading in Ask Ubuntu through apparently similar problems, I decided to follow some advices: got boot-repair and run it. The problem remains & I got this report. I also run as root in terminal $ sudo update-initramfs -u and this is what I got: update-initramfs: Generating /boot/initrd.img-3.2.0-24-generic-pae cryptsetup: WARNING: failed to detect canonical device of /dev/sda1 cryptsetup: WARNING: could not determine root device from /etc/fstab /tmp/mkinitramfs_EIDlHy/scripts/classmate-bottom/45xconfig: 9: .: Can't open /scripts/casper-functions What else? My pc is Intel® Core™ i7 CPU 870 @ 2.93GHz × 8, graphs is GeForce 8400 GS/PCIe/SSE2, memory is 7,8 GiB. I have two questions: Is this a bug in the newest kernel I should report? Is there anything I can do appart from a fresh install?

• How similiar should the environments of PreProd and Prod be?

  I've just recently been on a project and during the release, we realized that it didn't work in Production. It works in all other environments but because we have a separate release team, and we cannot set up the servers and environments ourselves, we have no visibility of the configuration on them. We suspect that Prod has some user permissions in its account or IIS settings that are different, so we are working though it now. So I think this whole thing has been a learning experience for me and I don't want the same thing repeated again. I would like to ask, how different should these environments be? I always thought that PreProd should be an identical copy to the Prod environment using a copy of the same database, using a copy of the same user account, should be installed on the same servers etc. But how far should I take it? If the web site is externally facing, should PreProd be externally facing? What if the website has components that don't require a user account or password to navigate to? Is it still okay to expose it to the outside world?

  My question is particularly in context of this Question asked recently on this site. I am a fresh graduate and would soon be applying for jobs. But the above mentioned question has raised concerns for me. Should i care about the company i am going to join. Specially since for me Yahoo is a very reputed corporation and i duly respect it, in fact i would be proud to work for it if given the chance. And the OP of the question was a Senior Software Engineer, i don't think something could have gone so wrong that he feels shame for have worked there. Well i won't like to have this situation in my career. Until now for me the criteria for approaching a company were like - it should have Good, knowledgeable and Experienced team, it should provide me with tasks that will always challenge me to think and learn more, etc. After all a task is task and you do always learn something from it. But in view of mentioned question should i also consider other things... Please give your answers and most importantly an opinion from your own experience.

• IEEE SRS documents: lightweight version when working with outside contractors?

  Typically we follow an Agile development process that tends not to put an emphasis on writing requirements and technical documents that nobody will read. We tend to focus our limited manpower to development and testing activities with collaborative design and whiteboarding as a key focus. There is a mostly standalone web component that will take quite a few weeks to develop, but this work can be mostly parallel with other project work going on. To try and catch up time I was given a budget for hiring a developer on oDesk to complete this work. While my team isn't accustomed to working off of a firm SRS document, I realize that with outsourced development that it is a good idea to be as firm and specific as possible so I realize that I need to provide a detailed Requirements and Technical Specification document for this work to be done correctly. When I do write a Requirements document I typically utilize the standard IEEE SRS document template but I think this is too verbose and probably overkill for what I need to communicate to a developer. Is there another requirements document that is more lightweight and also accepted by a major standards organization like the IEEE? Further, as what will be developed as a software module that will interact with other software modules, my requirements really need to delve into technical specifications for things to work correctly. In this scenario does it make sense to merge technical and requirements specifications into a single document, and if not, what is a viable alternative?

• Dual Monitor in Ubuntu 11.10 is resetting the theme

• How come I cannot make this file executable (chmod permissions)?

  I downloaded Android Development Tool for linux (ADT) and placed it in home directory. After unzipping the files, when I double click the "eclipse" executable file; the eclipse works perfectly fine. But If I unzip the ADT in a different directory, in my case directory E: (is shown when I boot in windows 7) There double clicking the same "eclipse" executable file does not run eclipse. It shows error message: Could not display /media/Software/00.AndroidLinux/ADT/eclipse/eclipse. There is no application installed for executable files. Do you want to search for an application to open this file? If I press yes in the Dialog, it finds "Pypar2" which is not my solution. I found that the "eclipse" file permission is following -rw------- 1 tanvir tanvir 63050 Feb 4 19:05 eclipse I tried to change the permission by "chmod +x eclipse" , but no use. This command does not change the file permission at all in this case. what should I do? Relevant output of cat /proc/mounts: /dev/sda6 /media/Software fuseblk rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=0,group_id=0,default_permissions,allow_other,blksize=4096 0 0 Please not that I'm new to Ubuntu and still learning day by day.

• Issue with Banshee

  I went to install Banshee using Ubuntu tweak's App button. I clicked the stable ppa, and installed. When it was done, i tried to launch it, it shows up for a split second then closes. So I though it might be having issues with Rhythmbox's associations or something. So I uninstalled Rhythmbox. But same issue. So I try to uninstall Banshee, and it won't, it fails. I thought, well maybe if I tried installing it from the terminal, adding the ppa first (sudo add-apt-repository ppa:banshee-team/ppa) updating apt-get, then sudo apt-get install banshee. But it fails. So now I can't run it, uninstall it, re install it.. or anything. I'm new to linux so I don't know how to go about rebuilding the files. But if anyone has seen this issue before, or has any idea on how to fix this, I would really appreciate the help. Thanks guys

• Change spacing of icons in Indicator Applet Complete, preferably by editing a config file?

If at all possible, I'd like to space them with about 1-3px between each one. https://launchpad.net/indicator-applet [Website] I'm using 12.04, and in GNOME Classic (No Effects). I'm working from a netbook (1024x600), and am trying to fit everything into one panel for the sake of screen conservation. Ironically, my netbook is often without reliable net access, and so a way to simply edit a config file or the like would be ideal, as opposed to downloading patches, modified packages, etc., but anything would be helpful. Even pointing me in the direction of how to start rebuilding the indicator to meet my needs (if need-be) would be welcome. Does anyone know of a method that would serve my purpose? EDIT: I've downloaded v0.4.93 from the site mentioned above, and took a look inside the archive. Couldn't find anything clearly alluding to object placement/size and such. Maybe just a pointer on where to find those params would do? EDIT 2: Some more info on my WM/DE: I'm pretty sure GNOME classic is gtk2 not gtk3, and equally sure my windows manager is metacity, as opposed to compiz. "equally sure" meaning i could be horribly wrong, but when I edit the metacity css file for my theme (which ive switched to "Adawaita"), it takes effect after logout/login. My inability to modify the spacing persists. Im gonna see if i can contact someone involved in its dev to get their input, will post results here if fruitful.

• PHP hosting some info required [closed]

  I have recently given a control of newly bought hosting space and the domain account. There is a technical team from the hosting site to help out with problems, but that is a long process, i.e. log a ticket, wait for a long time, and I don't get the correct answer in the first shot. I was wondering, if anyone has any helpful guide and how one must go with hosting a site. Any info that must be know w.r.t to cpanel? Any other useful stuff if any one has, or could point me to ? Just to give a few difficulties: The same php code working well on local machine, giving error on remote as "File not found". The file is present indeed as I have ftp'ed all the files correctly. session_start error are outputted to html page with warning "Header already sent". and many more technical things, that work well on local but not on actual hosting server. So, if anyone has any helpful stuff in this reference, as to what all changes are required or what a programmer must be aware from a hosting perspective, please let me know. Note I am hosting a PHP site with mysql db, on a shared environment.

• Grub2 cannot detect Windows 8

  At installation it did not detect Windows. I mounted the Windows partition and have run os-prober with no results returning. I am able to boot Windows or Ubuntu by specifying the partition in UEFI boot order. The bios does not appear to allow booting with legacy. SecureBoot is on. This is with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a Inspiron 15. Here is the gdisk: 1 2048 1026047 500.0 MiB EF00 EFI system partition 2 1026048 1107967 40.0 MiB FFFF Basic data partition 3 1107968 1370111 128.0 MiB 0C01 Microsoft reserved part 4 1370112 2394111 500.0 MiB 2700 Basic data partition 5 2394112 544743423 258.6 GiB 0700 Basic data partition 6 606183424 625140399 9.0 GiB 2700 Microsoft recovery part 7 544743424 545230847 238.0 MiB 0700 (/boot) 8 545230848 556949503 5.6 GiB 8200 (swap) 9 556949504 606181375 23.5 GiB 0700 (/) When installing ubuntu, I believe I specified that the bootloader be installed on /dev/sda. I added the following to /etc/grub.d/40_custom but booting ubuntu did not offer a grub menu: menuentry "Windows 8" { set root = "(hd0,4)" chainloader +1 } When booting I think I see "EFI Disk error" flash very quickly before Ubuntu starts booting.

• No grub selection after installing kernel Ubuntu 14.04

  I have installed a new kernel on my system which can be found by grub but when I restart I can only select the old kernel. Things I tried in other threds with similar problems didn't help. sudo update-grub gives Generating grub configuration file ... Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.15.0-031500rc2-lowlatency Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.15.0-031500rc2-lowlatency Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.15.0-031500rc2-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.15.0-031500rc2-generic Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.13.0-24-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.13.0-24-generic Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.elf Found memtest86+ image: /boot/memtest86+.bin done However, afer a reboot I can only choose the 3.13 kernel. Any ideas what happened? I I have a full encrypted hard drive so maybe I have overseen something while installing the new kernel to get this work? • How to structure reading of commands given at a(n interactive) CLI prompt?

  Let's say I have a program called theprogram (the marketing team was on strike when the product was to be named). I start that program by typing, perhaps not surprisingly, the program name as a command into a command prompt. After that, I get into a loop (from the users standpoint, an interactive command-line prompt), where one command will be read from the user, and depending on what command was given, the program will execute some instructions. I have been doing something like the following (in C-like pseudocode): main_loop{ in=read_input(); if(in=="command 1") do_something(); else if(in=="command 2") do_something_else(); ... } (In a real program, I would probably encapsulate more things into different procedures, this is just an example.) This works well for a small amount of commands, but let's say you have 100, 1000 or even 10 000 of them (the manual would be huge!). It is clearly a bad idea to have 10 000 ifs and else ifs after each other, for instance, the program would be hard to read, hard to maintain, contain a lot of boilerplate code... Yeah, you don't want to do that, so what approach would you recommend me to use (I will probably never use 10 000 commands in a program, but the solution should, at least preferably, be able to scale to that kind of massive (?) problems. The solution doesn't have to allow for arguments to the commands)?
