• Codecs, Premiere Pro & Quicktime: Import or Play Error

  Original Question I've been using a FS-H200 (not the Pro variant) recorder with a JVC ProHD camera. I have been shooting with the DTE FORMAT to Quicktime (.mov). I copied the files to an external hard drive and am now trying to edit. The files will play back in VLC, as they would be expected to. However they will not import into Adobe Premiere CS5.5, instead giving an error: Unsupported format or damaged file. Quicktime gives the following error when attempting to play the files: Error -2002: a bad public movie atom was found in the movie (Filename) To try and fix this, I have installed the following codec packs: K-Lite Codec Pack 64-bit Full (version 5.9, latest) K-Lite Codec Pack 32-bit Full (version 8.4, latest) MainConcept Codec Suite (Broadcast) v5.1 for Adobe CS5 Reinstalled Quicktime with new download from Apple The same errors and problems still exist. From this I can assume that there is an issue with Quicktime and that is what Premiere is using as an encoder/decoder for the codec. Is there any way to fix this? • Monitor flickers in native resolution.

  With my new Samsung Syncmaster BX2450 I have the following problem: In Windows XP (SP2), all resolutions above 1440x900 have either strange pixel errors or an extreme flickering. It seems, that the effect worsens for higher resolutions. In special, I would like to run the monitor with its native resolution (1920x1080), however I can't watch longer than 5 seconds on the monitor because of the flickering... My Graphics Card is a Geforce FX 5200 with the most up-to-date driver (according to Nvidia.com: Forceware 175.19) and I'm having the monitor connected to its DVI-output. The strange thing is, under Ubuntu 10.04, all resolutions work just perfect, so the display must be alright. edit: seems to be a driver problem... if I use the proprietary NVIDIA drivers in Ubuntu, I have the same problem as in Windows. I would like to reformulate my question: Is there a modified/alternative Geforce FX 5200 driver (as there is in Ubuntu) for Windows that allows me to use 1920x1020 without problems ? I already tried the omega drivers: unfortunately, it still looks poor on the native resolution.

• nginx not starting at reboot after gitlab installation

  I installed nginx (1.6) in ubuntu server (14.04). After that, I installed gitlab. I didn't realize it came with its own nginx. I uninstalled gitlab later. After installing gitlab, my first nginx began to never start at boot as a service. This means: If I hit sudo netstat -anp I don't see the corresponding entry in 0.0.0.0:80. If I hit sudo nginx -s reload and then sudo netstat -anp I see the corresponding entry I mentioned. I thought I could fixing it by doing: sudo update-rc.d nginx remove sudo update-rc.d nginx defaults After removing gitlab, but it did not help me (i.e. after reboot, nginx does not automatically start). I revised the /etc/init.d/nginx just to see that $DAEMON is still /usr/sbin/nginx. Question: What should I check to see the problem here (or: what could the problem be)? sudo nginx -s reload works with no problems at all.

  In the spirit of the question What is your oldest hardware that still works?, I'd like to ask: What is the oldest hardware you know that is still in production use? And what challenges did you (or someone else) face in keeping it running (scarce documentation, no support, no spare parts available...)? Most organizations will retire / upgrade software and hardware after 5-10 years, but sometimes old software is kept running on old boxes, because it "just works". I once worked at a client site that was running a critical piece of (in-house developed) business software on a single server running HP-UX. The server was old (ca. 12-13 years), but fortunately still running without problems; however, getting spares would have been very difficult, and since software installation was undocumented, any significant system changes or even new hardware might have caused significant downtime and data loss. We eventually managed to replace it, but this is not always possible. I also read that many organizations still run decade-old mainframe hardware, particularly for highly customized systems controlling industrial machines or power plants. • Where do these mysterious DNS lookups come from and why are they slow?

  I have recently obtained a new dedicated server which I'm now setting up. It's running on 64-bit Debian 6.0. I have cloned a fairly large git repository (177 MB including working files) onto this server. Switching to a different branch is very very slow. On my laptop it takes 1-2 seconds, on this server it can take half a minute. After some investigation it turns out to be some kind of DNS timeout. My server's hostname was originally Debian-60-squeeze-64-minimal. I had changed it to shell.happyponies.com by running hostname shell.happyponies.com, editing /etc/hostname and rebooting the server. I don't understand the DNS protocol, but it looks like Git is trying to lookup the IP for Debian-60-squeeze-64-minimal as well as for happyponies.com. Why does Debian-60-squeeze-64-minimal come back even though I've already changed the host name? Why does Git perform DNS lookups at all? Why are these lookups so slow? I've already verified that all DNS servers in /etc/resolv.conf are up and responding slowly, yet Git's own lookups time out. Changing the host name back to Debian-60-squeeze-64-minimal seems to fix the slowness. Basically I just want to fix whatever DNS issues my server has because I'm sure they will cause more problems that just slowing down git checkout. But I'm not sure sure what the problem exactly is and what these symptoms mean.

  I have 2 cisco rv180 VPN router. These routers are giving me lots of problems. The webpages wont load correctly, slow response to load webpages plus other many issues. I have several cases pending with cisco. I give up on these routers. I would like to know if you guys can recommend me a reliable router for our 3 branches (NY - main, SC and FL). In NY- main office, we have 55 users. In SC branch, 6 users. In Florida we only have 1 (will grow soon). • Internet Explorer ignoring PHP setcookie() from CentOS server

  In the past we used a windows XAMPP server for an internal website. It worked fine but had some intermittent issues and we decided to move to a LAMP server on CentOS. We made the switch today but it turns out Internet Explorer ignores every attempt I make at saving a cookie. There is no underscore in the URL being used... the URL is actually the same as the one the XAMPP server used, where I was able to save cookies without any problems. It really doesn't make any sense to me, all of the code is the same. The only thing to change is the version of PHP and the server OS. The website works on all other browsers except IE. I can't even make a simple setcookie call. On a blank test page I use setcookie("test", "test", time()+36000, "/"); sleep(5); print_r($_COOKIE); and there is nothing there. Our users can't log into the website because of this and I have no idea what the issue is. If anyone can provide any clues or resolutions I would greatly appreciate it. Obviously the easy answer is to not use IE, but that is not an option in this case.

• Apache displays error page half way through PHP page execution

  I've just installed Zend Server Community Edition on a Windows Server 2003 box, however there's a bit of a problem with the display of a lot of our PHP pages. The code has previously running under the same version of PHP (5.3) on IIS without any issues. By the looks of things, Apache (installed as part of Zend Server) is erroring out during the rendering of the page when it comes across something it doesn't like in the PHP. Going through the code, I've been able to get past some of the problems by removing the error suppression operator (@) from function calls and by changing the format of some includes. However, I can't do this for the whole site! Weirdly, the error code is reported as "200 OK". • Host couldn't be reached by domain name, only by IP: Apache's fault?

  I have this Windows Server 2003 R2 32 bit machine running Apache 2.4.2 with OpenSSL 1.0.1c and PHP 5.4.5 via mod_fcgid 2.3.7. This config worked just fine for some hours, but then the site couldn't be reached with its domain name, say www.example.com, but it could be still reached by its IP address. In particular, while https://www.example.com/ yielded a connection error, http://123.1.2.3/ worked just fine. Yes, first https then http. Error and access logs were clean, i.e. they showed no signs of problems. Just the usual messages, that were interrupted while the site couldn't be reached. After some investigation, a simple restart of Apache solved the problem. Unfortunately, I didn't have the chance to test if https://123.1.2.3/ worked as well, or if http://www.example.com/ was still redirected to https as usual. So, has anyone have any idea of what happened? Before I get tired of Apache and ditch it in favor of Nginx? Edit: Some log informations. • default domain and first domain in apache2 causing trouble

  I have 3 sites and a default/test site using mono's test page. I created aFirst, c, d, e, zLast. zLast has rewrite rules that should be evaluated last. Why isnt the server ip address always loading the default page (mono test page) and why isnt csite.ddomain.net always loading the site i want!?! • Where did my backup files go? Can they be recovered?

  I just purchased a Western Digital Essential SE 1TB external hard drive from Best Buy at their recommendation. I then exchanged it for a Toshiba Canvio (I think that was the name). I have a Toshiba Qosmio X505-Q898. The Canvio locked up my computer and rewrote some kind of OS file, and erased all the restore points as well as the system image backup (according to Best Buy) just by plugging it in for the first time. Never even got to the install part or anything -- plugged it in and fried my computer. They spent about an hour and a half on my computer and got it back to a somewhat working condition and gave me access to my files. So now they say I have to back it up using my recovery disk and rewriting my OS. Enter the Essential. Brought it home last night, plugged it in and installed everything. Works perfect, no problems. Backed up everything on it. I unplugged and plugged it twice to make sure that everything was on it. Essential told me it had both the HDD and SSD backed up. So I reinstalled my OS. Plugged the Essential in and everything loads right up. Went to retrieve my files and the Western Digital has nothing on it. It shows all my music, pics, ETC. as still being on my computer and needing to be backed up, but since there are no files on my computer now. Where is this information coming from and where did my files go? It's about 810GB worth of files I've amassed over several years. Is there any way to recover data from this? I plan to contact Western Digital and Best Buy, just thought I would check here too. Any advice will be appreciated as a lot of these files are invaluable to me.

• How to configure network on Windows Server 2008

  I have a IBM x3400 Server Machine with Windows Server 2008 R2 installed on it. But, since I am not expert on networking I have some problems. These roles installed on my server: Active Directory DNS File Sharing Hyper-V ISS VPN There is two network card on them. I configured them like this: Local Connection 1: 192.168.30.3 255.255.255.0 192.168.30.2 127.0.0.1 Local Connection 2: 192.168.30.101 255.255.255.0 192.168.30.6 127.0.0.1 My problem is, when I use this Ip gateways, It is sharing internet to all computers. This is not I want. I want to use Local Connection 1 for internal network. I am giving all computers gateway and DNS IP as 192.168.30.3 The Local Connection 2 is for Hyper-V and VPN connections. 192.168.30.2 and 192.168.30.6 are my modem's gateways. I am using 192.168.30.6 external IP for VPN connections. There is two 24 port switches. There is a connection between them and this two ethernet card connected directly to them. And modems are connected to switches as well (Morems are not near the server. They are somewhere in the building). I disabled network Bridge and removed all ethernet cards from it. With this configuration, all computers can ping my server's IP (192.168.30.3) but on server I cannot ping any clients (Request timeout). What is the best way to configure my network? Thank you. • How do I do a mail merge that includes images?

  I am trying to find out the practicalities of doing a mail merge when each “record” to be merged on includes some images. I need to: print letters And envelopes Both the letters and the envelopes have: Fixed text Fixed images Text that come from the mail merge record Images that come from the mail merge record I don’t know if all images will be the same size for every record, so a bit of simple “on the fly” automatic formatting may be needed . I need to be able to repeat a single item if I get a problem (e.g when folding the letter). What problems am I likely to have? Is Word 2007 up to this sort of mail merging, or should I be looking at a report writing tool? How do I restart a print run after a printer jam etc? What format should I store the “records” and there images in? E.g Can standard software cope with images that are stored in separate files named after the “CustomerId” that is in the “record” (I can write custom software if needed, but would rather use standard “of-the-shelf” software for the printing, I am planning on custom software for the data creation, so can output in whatever format is needed)

• Docking Station Sound Doesn't Work on Dell D830 with Windows 7

  EDIT: I can only mark one answer as the correct one but the actual solution was a combination of two comments (updating the BIOS to A15 AND installing the Sigmatel audio drivers). I have a Dell Latitude D830 laptop that is running Windows 7 Enterprise x64. I connect to a docking station during the day with multiple monitors, a keyboard and a mouse. Everything runs with no problems including most of the docking station ports (usb, monitors, etc.) However, the sound port from the docking station does not work since the upgrade to Windows-7. Even with the laptop plugged in, the sound always comes out of the laptop, not the headphones plugged into the docking station. Here's what I've tried: I've seen other issues like via Google this that seem to be mostly unanswered. I found one or two that referenced using the Vista x64 drivers, especially the Nvidia drivers. I do not have an Nvidia chipset but I've reinstalled the sound drivers and that has not helped. I don't have a support contract and considering the cost is usually high to call Dell, that's not an option. Dell's forums are pretty much a wasteland and I've found no help there. Since this is a docking station I thought I might need to try the SATA or Intel chipset drivers from the dell site instead, however I'm not really sure and I need to work on this laptop in the meantime. I can't really afford the downtime to experiment with random drivers all day in case they turn out to be incompatible (Dell still hasn't added Windows 7 to their support site as far as I can tell). Does anyone have any other ideas? Has anyone had this issue and solved it? If so, how? Thanks in advance for your help.

  Vista Ultimate 32 bit Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit I've read through similar questions about sharing between Win7 and Vista, but none of them have resolved my issue of not being able to share between Win7 and Vista: Connecting to a Vista shared folder from Windows 7 Networking Windows 7 and Vista Enable File sharing in Windows Vista Previously I had previously had my Vista and XP system sharing back and forth without any problems. I was able to access the shares without entering a user name / password in the NT challenge prompt (note: account names and passwords were different on the Vista and XP systems). Currently I replaced my XP system with a Win7 system. Now, when I attempt to access shares to/from Vista / Win7, I am continually prompted with an NT challenge to enter my credentials. Things I've Verified/Tried Both systems are on the same workgroup. Win 7 is using the Home network. Vista is using the Private network. In other words, neither system is using a Public network profile. Enabled file sharing with and without password protection on both Vista and Win7 Tried HomeGroup Connections (win7) with Windows to manage connections and Use user accounts to connect. Reviewed too many online articles to count to trouble shoot. Set the shares to have full control by everyone. Set up the shares directly on the directory and through the share manager. My Question How can I enable file sharing between Vista and Win7 without being prompted with a username/password challenge, ever?

• HAProxy crashes on all requests in 1.5-dev12

  I'm having an issue where HAProxy is crashing with no explanation when I switch from 1.4.12 to 1.5-dev12. The reason I'm switching is for the SSL offloading. My config file doesn't have any errors, it's quite simple and it works well with 1.4 - but for some reason when I run it with 1.5-dev12 I see the logs noting that the two backends I have have been set up, and then when I hit one of the frontends, I get an HTTP 400 in the browser and suddenly HAProxy isn't running anymore when I check. I understand that a common workaround to the lack of SSL support for HAProxy is to use Stud, and I may go with that since I am in need of an SSL solution for my service, but before I dele into that world I thought I might see if anybody has experienced the same problems and might know how to fix it. The server is Ubuntu 10.04 and I followed the make instructions on the Exceliance blog here. EDIT: On the advice of Kyle Brandt, I did a bit more investigation. I attached gdb to the haproxy process and when the crash occurred this is what I got: Program received signal SIGSEGV, Segmentation fault. 0x0804e5c2 in dequeue_all_listeners (list=0x9e1a418) at src/protocols.c:184 184 list_for_each_entry_safe(listener, l_back, list, wait_queue) { P.S. HAProxy is awesome, so thank you Exceliance for providing us with something so useful :)

• IIS7 can't read web.config on shared Mac filesystem

  I'm running a VirtualBox virtualized Windows 2008 Server on my Mac, just finished setting it up today. On it, I have SQL Server 2008, IIS and ColdFusion 9. I want to serve websites from my Mac filesystem (for development purposes). So I created a new website in IIS and pointed it at the appropriate path using a UNC path: \vboxsvr\rob\Sites\testsite, which contains the ColdFusion code and a web.config file. When I attempt to modify the file at all, or view the site in a web browser, I get an error: HTTP 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. I did some Googling, and found several similar problems, but nothing exactly like I have. The closest one seemed to indicate permissions. So I recreated the site and set it up to allow the Administrator (in Windows) to access the stuff. That didn't help. I can read/modify the files just fine from within Windows, but IIS itself can't seem to do it. What do I need to do to fix this? Thanks!

• Installing sphinx on a web hosting server

  I want to install sphinx search on a web-hosting server. I'm on a Linux VPS with hostgator, but I never actually installed anything on a remote server so this will be a first time for me. If there's anyone here who installed sphinx it's really help me I had some problems when using sphinx on my PC with the permissions and the MySQL files, eventually I got it working on my PC. Anyway, I'd me really grateful if anyone can help me with some questions Do i need root access to install sphinx? I have root access to the server but I'd connect to it as a normal user since doing stuff as root is always less secure. can anyone tell me by what user I need to execute the indexer and the search daemon? Should I use root access in order to this? when I did it as a normal user on my PC it gave me some trouble with the PID file and the log files. last time I executed the search deamon I executed it as a normal user and it gave me some trouble, I created the folder /var/log/ for log files and did chmod 777 on it, but still when I executed the search daemon it created the PID file "searchd.pid" file but with no permissions for some reason, any idea why? • Problem connecting to remote network using demand-dial VPN interface with Windows Server 2003

  I have a Windows 2003 server (SP2) that I'm trying to set up route traffic from my local network using a VPN My local network has the following components: Broadband router (192.168.0.1) Windows Server with a single NIC running RRAS (192.168.0.2 def. gateway = 192.168.0.1) Client Machine (192.168.0.3 def. gateway = 192.168.0.1) Using a VPN connection, I am trying to access a remote machine (10.0.0.1 for example) I configured RRAS with a demand-dial interface for the VPN and set it to be a persistent connection. As part of that setup, a static route to 10.0.0.0 (255.255.0.0) was created. When at the console of the server, I can ping 10.0.0.1 with no problems I added a route on the client machine using the following command: ROUTE ADD 10.0.0.0 MASK 255.255.0.0 192.168.0.2 If I run tracert 10.0.0.1 from the client, the first hop is to 192.168.0.2 which tells me that route is working. However, I cannot ping 10.0.0.1 from the client machine. What am I missing? Hopefully something simple.

• vSphere Promiscuous mode only receiving packets one way from network switch

  We have two network switches, a POE switch (SwitchA) to power our phones / users computers and a non-POE switch (SwitchB for the rest network.) Each switch is setup to do port mirroring to support our VoIP recording system. SwitchA does port mirroring on specific ports if we need to record a user. SwitchB mirrors one port to monitor our work at home users (Internet comes in from managed router, to switch, back out to our firewall.) These two port mirroring setups feed into one vmware vSphere 4.1 server, it has four total physical cards. The other two NICs feed into an unmanaged switch for connecting to the rest of the network. Once into the vSphere server all network ports go into a vSwitch, and then one of the servers (Windows 2008 R2) sniffs them out and does its thing. Everything is working fine and dandy from SwitchB. But on SwitchA we only receive one side of the VoIP packets (going out to the phone, nothing coming in from the phone). Troubleshooting steps I have taken so far: I hooked up my laptop to the monitor port on SwitchB and I see both sides of the packets. I swapped which network interface is plugged into the monitor port on SwitchA. Because everything feeds into one vSwitch / vNetwork and both sides of the conversation arrive just fine from SwitchB I believe everything is configured correctly on the vSphere server/guest. What could be causing one way packets to arrive on my guest machine from only one interface, but not the other? Could a bad cable be causing the problems from SwitchB?

• Imac g5 with no OS nor CD drive

  What I want: Ubuntu on a g5 Imac. What I have: An empty PC (Intel g5 17" Imac) with broken CD drive. Its model is A1173. This PC with Ubuntu 12.04 and an old Vista partition. a usb flash drive. Problems: No CD means the only boot Drive I could use is USB. There are no BIOS on Macs so I can't set boot settings or even see if it detects my USB drive. When I start the machine and press ALT the first and only thing I see is an old corrupted winXP partition and not a single option or additional information. So assuming blindly that the Mac hardware/firmware works normally, I don't have any Mac OS to use any of the tools that I found on different tutorials for building a bootable .img drive for macs. I can't find much software on Linux/Windows to substitute to those tools, for example among others converting an .iso file (win/linux) to .img (mac I guess). Which makes me think that the scenario where someone like me has Mac hardware but no Mac OS is extremely rare. So other than finding someone that has a Mac I have no solution. So I ask what would you do? the only thing is it should not involve any money (I know mac soft is rarely free) which also excludes getting any MacOS unless I can use a free macos.img for VM or restore the original Mac for free. • Running batch file through a service.

  I'm trying to schedule a batch file to run through a third party application, however the output file doesn't get created in the directory. If I run the .BAT file from the command line, it works and the file gets created. Also using the Windows Schedule will also succeed. Basically, the 3rd party software will schedule the .BAT file and it shows success within the 3rd party user interface. The difference between running from the command prompt and the software, is that the software will use its Windows service to launch the batch. The 3rd party software will show success since it was able to successfully call the .BAT file to run, however it has no control of the other EXE's that's being called within the script. I'm able to run a simple .BAT file in the 3rd party software, for example a copy command. The .BAT I'm having problems with calls a compiled EXE which launches Excel to create a file to a location. The .bat file calls something.exe, which then calls Excel.exe: C:\something.exe -o D:\filename.xlsm C:\filename.xlsm refresh_pivot Do you think it's a permissions issue? I used Process Monitor to verify any Access Denied errors but everything seems to be working according to the trace. It worked on a non-64-bit OS, I'm currently using Win2008 64-bit.

• Windows 7: Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently - only returns after "Troubleshoot connection" resets the adapter

  On our laptop (running Windows 7) the Wi-Fi connection drops intermittently. Symptoms: Connectivity is suddenly lost, and the "signal strenght" indicator in the tray shows zero strength and a yellow "star" symbol. What happens then: The problem does not resolve itself by just waiting. If I click on the tray icon, the "Windows network diagnostics" wizard pops up and tells me that there is a networking problem (duh). If I click on the "repair" button (not sure about the wording), the wizard works for a while, then reports that it has reset the network adapter. Then Wi-Fi works again. While the above procedure has worked every time so far, it is very annoying. It takes 10-20s to repair the connection, and in the meantime downloads, video streams etc. may have been aborted. Some more details: The problem occurs without any apparent regularity, but usually a few minutes after powerup (though not every time). It happens frequently enough to be annoying. It is unlikely to be a router problem - another laptop running at the same time usually has no Wi-Fi problems. I am at a loss about what to try to troubleshoot this. Any ideas? Computer: Acer Aspire 7739Z. Wi-Fi card: Atheros AR5B125

• VMware Workstation "Power off" and "Suspend" buttons are disabled. What is going on?

  I've been using an XP image for a few months now with no problems. Recently the power off and resume buttons were disabled and I'm not sure what happened to cause that. In addition, the menu items to do those functions are grayed out (like VM | Power | Power Off) I'm using VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on a Windows 7 64-bit host. The image is Windows XP 32-bit. There is plenty of free space and memory on the host and the CPU is not pegged. I am able to power off the image through its Start menu, but that's a workaround not a fix. Any suggestions? TIA EDIT: Well after manually shutting down the image then closing and reopening the image file (which I've done before) in preparation for reinstalling the tools as suggested below, it looks fine. The power off and suspend buttons are enabled and work. So what do I do with this question now? "Close and restart a few times and it may work" doesn't seem useful...
