How to fix the boot set up?

I got two OSes in my PC, Ubuntu and Windows 7. Until yesterday Windows 7 was on top of my dual-boot menu list, but I wanted to change it, so I went inside Windows configurations and put Ubuntu first, but I also set the time to 0 because I thought I could access Windows through Grub. But what happens is that after I upgraded Ubuntu to 11.10, that screen with boot options don't show Windows 7 anymore. I went online searching for a solution to my problem, most of them told me to configure some Grub options and others to use programs to do it. I've done them all and still can't access Windows 7. Just in case my problem is not clear yet, this is how was my boot order before I messed it all up: Windows 7 Ubuntu with a time of 10 secs to choose between both. This is how I wanted it to be: Ubuntu Windows 7 with 0 time to choose, but, inside Ubuntu I could access Windows through that Grub screen. But this is what happens: Ubuntu Windows 7 0 time, so it don't let me choose anything and jumps inside Ubuntu then inside Ubuntu grub doesn't show up anymore (black screen) and it starts Ubuntu normally. I tried to fix this many times from different ways inside Ubuntu but nothing worked, also when I try do something and then upgrade my grub with sudo upgrade-grub it shows this message: Generating grub.cfg ... Found Windows 7 (loader) on /dev/sda1 Skipping Windows 7 (loader) on Wubi system Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-3.0.0-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-3.0.0-12-generic Found linux image: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-12-generic Found initrd image: /boot/initrd.img-2.6.38-12-generic done Thats why in the title I said it could probably be my WUBI messing all up. Anyone heave a solution for this? Do you need more information? I have a netbook so I cannot use the Windows Repair CD.

I can't seem to find a nice explanation of the Data Oriented Design for a generic zombie game (it's just an example, pretty common example). Could you make an example of the Data Oriented Design on creating a generic zombie class? Is the following good? Is there a way to make catalyst driver work in Trusty for the radeon hd4330?

Though official Catalyst software 13.1 is suitable for ati radeon hd4330, it can't be installed on Ubuntu 14.04 as it can't support Xorg = 7.6 As I need proprietary drivers for trusty, I would like to know if there is a way to bypass this limitation ? USB flash module giving errors

Hi, I have a SATA USB flash module which was earlier running a 2.4 linux kernel (2.4.36.6) and on which now I am trying to install ubuntu server 10.04.1 LTS. Why can't I compile this version of Postfix?

I just installed postfix 2.7.11 in Ubuntu server from source code. I do not use the ubuntu own one because I need the old version. I found a very interesting problem. Before, in both CentOS 5 and 6, I can build the source code without any problem. But, in Ubuntu server 12.04 is totally different. I got the following problems: dict_nis.c:173: error: undefined reference to 'yp_match' dict_nis.c:187: error: undefined reference to 'yp_match' dns_lookup.c:347: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:218: error: undefined reference to '__res_search' dns_lookup.c:287: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:498: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' dns_lookup.c:383: error: undefined reference to '__dn_expand' Yes, this reason is obviously. I just search related library and add it to the makefile. It works. The question is why? What is the difference between Ubuntu Server and CentOS? One possibility is gcc and ld version. Ubuntu server use different version of gcc and ld with CentOS. But I am not sure.

how do I uninstall old kernel options listed in Grub2? [closed]

Possible Duplicate: Is there a way to remove/hide old kernel versions? I installed Ubuntu Tweak in Ubuntu 11.10, went to Janitor, and selected and removed old kernels that appeared there (3.0.0-12). Now, the only installed linux-image that appears as 'Installed' in SPM is the most recent one (3.0.0-13), which is the one I want. It did not however eliminate the kernel listing in Grub 2. At boot: However, at boot, in Grub-2, the following options still appear: 3.0.0-13-generic 3.0.0-13-generic (recovery mode) 3.0.0-12 (generic) (on /dev/sde5) 3.0.0-12 (generic (recovery mode) (on /dev/sde5) And, in Terminal, when I change directory (cd) to /boot, and then list (ls), I get the following listed kernels: 3.0.0-13 2.6.38-12 2.6.38-8 (al There is no change when I sudo update-grub in Terminal 1) what is /dev/sde5, and where is it located in the file system, so i can delete it? 2) why the differences between what appears as installed in SPM, what appears at boot in Grub2, and what shows when I list the contents of Grub2 in Terminal? Ultimately, I simply want to remove the 3.0.0-12 kernel options at boot in Grub2. How do I best and simplest do that? Dom U Installation on Ubuntu 11.10

I am trying to add a DomU Operating system on Ubuntu 11.10. I have successfully installed Xen. Verified with xm info virsh-version which returns: Compiled against library: libvir 0.9.2 Using library: libvir 0.9.2 Using API: Xen 3.0.1 Running hypervisor: Xen 4.1. Now when I tried to install Dom0 it said: unable to connect to 'localhost:8000': , in VMM. So, I followed this bug link. I could now start adding DomU. No grub selection after installing kernel Ubuntu 14.04

I have installed a new kernel on my system which can be found by grub but when I restart I can only select the old kernel. Things I tried in other threds with similar problems didn't help. sudo update-grub gives Generating grub configuration file ... Any ideas what happened? I I have a full encrypted hard drive so maybe I have overseen something while installing the new kernel to get this work? ASP.NET MVC HandleError Attribute

Last Wednesday, I took a whopping 15 minutes out of my day and added ELMAH (Error Logging Modules and Handlers) to my ASP.NET MVC application. If you haven’t heard the news (I hadn’t until recently), ELMAH does a killer job of logging and reporting nearly all unhandled exceptions. As for handled exceptions, I’ve been using NLog but since I was already playing with the ELMAH bits I thought I’d see if I couldn’t replace it. Atif Aziz provided a quick solution in his answer to a Stack Overflow question. I’ll let you consult his answer to see how one can subclass the HandleErrorAttribute and override the OnException method in order to get the bits working. I pretty much took rolled the recommended logic into my application and it worked like a charm. Along the way, I did uncover a few HandleError fact to which I wasn’t already privy. Most of my learning came from Steven Sanderson’s book, Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework. I’ve flipped through a bunch of the book and spent time on specific sections. It’s a really good read if you’re looking to pick up an ASP.NET MVC reference. Anyway, my notes are found a comments in the following code snippet. can't load big files to server with php [closed]

Hi all! I can't load big files to server. The problem is in that file $_FILES["filename"]["tmp_name"] is empty if file a little more bigger then 2mb. I tried to change variables in php.ini upload_max_filesize = 700M post_max_size = 16M but not working to. Also tried to add this variables to my .httaccess file - but 500 error appears. Error code while uploading=1. UPLOAD_ERR_INI_SIZE Value: 1; The uploaded file exceeds the upload_max_filesize directive in php.ini. Here is my uppload.php page, please anwer what I doing wrong? How can I resolve this one application coming up with an "You don't have permission to use the application" error?

I've got a Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard Server Open Directory Master with a user who's getting Mobility & Application managed preferences from a group (the only group they're a member of). The workstation is also running Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, when the user logs in and tries to run our primary application which they're explicitly allowed to run (via the group's preferences), it says "You don't have permission to use the application 'Blah'". Now, the application is added to the group's list of always allowed applications, unsigned (so a minor difference in application version or file contents shouldn't disallow it). It even lives in a subdirectory of /Applications which is in the list of folders to allow applications. I've run into this when logging this user into new workstations and the following usually works: Log them out Remove the following files from their mobile home folder on the workstation: /Library/Managed\ Preferences/, ~/.FileSync, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist. Remove the following files from their network home folder on the server: ~/.FileSync, ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, and ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist. Log them back in on the workstation. However, this no longer resolves the issue. Their Home Sync preferences are set (on the group) to sync ~, but not the following files (manually, at login, and at logout... no background sync here): ~/.SymAVQSFile ~/NAVMac800QSFile ~/Library ~/.FileSync ~/.account Their Preferences Sync preferences are set (also on the group) to sync ~/Library & ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data, but not the following files (also manually, at login, and at logout... no background sync): ~/.SymAVQSFile ~/.Trash ~/.Trashes ~/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Entourage Temp ~/Library/Application Support/SyncServices ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync ~/Library/Caches ~/Library/Calendars/Calendar Cache ~/Library/Logs ~/Library/Mail/AvailableFeeds ~/Library/Mail/Envelope Index ~/Library/Preferences/Macromedia/ ~/Library/Printers ~/Library/PubSub/Database ~/Library/PubSub/Downloads ~/Library/PubSub/Feeds ~/Library/Safari/Icons.db ~/Library/Safari/HistoryIndex.sk ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates IMAP-* Exchange-* EWS-* Mac-* ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sitebarlists.plist ~/Library/Application Support/4D ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist ~/.FileSync ~/.account Even with ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist prevented from syncing during a Preferences Sync, it still seems to show up in the network home on the server frequently. Are there any other files other than ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist that contain application Managed Preferences that might be causing this one app to be showing up as not allowed? Any ideas on how ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist keeps getting sync'd back up the network home folder on the server? Update: I thought I had found a workaround this morning, but it also seemed to be extremely temporary. Basically, loking at /Library/Managed\ Preferences/[shortname]/com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist I discovered that it didn't have an entry for the application in question, but /Library/Managed\ Preferences/[shortname]/complete.plist did. Naturally, I deleted com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist, logged in again, and it worked... on one workstation. It failed on others, and after logging out & back in a couple more times it started failing on all of them again, even after further deletions of com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist. Oddly, com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist & complete.plist do both contain an entry for the application in question now, but it still says it's not allowed. Further Update: Okay, so I now have a reproducible workaround which seems to be required after every reboot of the workstation: Log in as the user (you'll discover you cannot launch the application in question). Fast User Switch to the local admin account on the workstation (we always have one on every machine). From that local admin account, run sudo mcxrefresh -n 'shortname' (logging out and back in as the user in question will not work). Fast User Switch back to the user (you'll still not be allowed to run the application). Log the user out and back in (you'll now be able to run the application in question.) Fast User Switch back to the local admin account, log it out, and log back in as the user in question. If you do all that exactly as described it'll keep working through log out & log back in, but NOT through a reboot. If, after a reboot, you try something like logging in as the local admin account, running sudo mcxrefresh -n 'shortname', logging out, then logging in as the user in question, it will NOT work. Yet Another Update We don't have any computer groups in our Open Directory, so it shouldn't be getting any conflicting settings from there. I ran sudo mcxquery -format xml -user shortname -group groupname before & after performing the aforementioned process to allow the application in question to be run and the results were identical (saved the result to files & diff'd... I'm not just guessing here). One Step Forward, Half a Step Back: When the Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server update was released, we upgraded our Open Directory Master to it as the changes included the following managed preferences fixes which I hoped might address this issue: Addresses an issue that could prevent managed preferences from being applied when a user logs in on a workstation that has been idle. Fixes an issue that could prevent administrators from bypassing client management settings on a workstation. This seemed to improve the situation slightly. The application in question now usually launches without error. If, and when it does launch with the "You don't have permission to use the application" error, logging the user out and back in seems to correct it. That said, we've since had to add a couple of applications to the user's ~/Applications/ directory and those are still prevented from launching. The workstations are running Mac OS X 10.6.4, the OD Master (which the workstations are bound to) is running Mac OS 10.6.5 Server (although there are two OD Replicas still running 10.6.4 Server), and we're using Workgroup Manager 10.6.3 (which is included with the Server Admin Tools 10.6.5 upgrade) to add the applications (unsigned, as always). This time, I've caught the following in /var/log/system.log when attempting to launch one of the allowed applications from ~/Applications: Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname parentalcontrolsd[43221]: -[ActivityTracker checkApp:csFlags:] [954:username] -- *** Incoming app appears to be masquerading as white listed app and failed signature validation: /Users/username/Applications/FileMaker Pro 5.5/FileMaker Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/FileMaker Pro. Note: This may be a valid app of a different version than what was whitelisted (on a different volume?) Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname [0x0-0xa42a42].com.filemaker.filemakerpro[43304]: launch of /Users/username/Applications/FileMaker Pro 5.5/FileMaker Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/FileMaker Pro was blocked Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname com.apple.launchd.peruser.1340[6375] ([0x0-0xa42a42].com.filemaker.filemakerpro[43304]): Exited with exit code: 255 Dec 22 17:36:24 hostname parentalcontrolsd[43221]: -[ActivityTracker(Private) _removeAppFromWhiteList:] [1362:username] -- *** Couldn't find local user record Running sudo mcxquery -format xml -user username -group groupname includes the following entry for FileMaker Pro 5.5 (and appears to include a full integration of the user's application whitelist & group's application whitelist): <dict> <key>bundleID</key> <string>com.filemaker.filemakerpro</string> <key>displayName</key> <string>FileMaker Pro</string> </dict> Note the lack of <key>appID</key><data> ... </data> which seems to specify a signed application. While whitelisted directories also appear to be correctly listed in the results, they too do not actually allow the applications to be run either. What is going on here?! Where else should I be looking?

Any ideas on how ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.MCX.plist keeps getting sync'd back up the network home folder on the server? Update: I thought I had found a workaround this morning, but it also seemed to be extremely temporary. Basically, loking at /Library/Managed\ Preferences/[shortname]/com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist I discovered that it didn't have an entry for the application in question, but /Library/Managed\ Preferences/[shortname]/complete.plist did. Naturally, I deleted com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist, logged in again, and it worked... on one workstation. It failed on others, and after logging out & back in a couple more times it started failing on all of them again, even after further deletions of com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist. Oddly, com.apple.applicationaccess.new.plist & complete.plist do both contain an entry for the application in question now, but it still says it's not allowed. Further Update: Okay, so I now have a reproducible workaround which seems to be required after every reboot of the workstation: Log in as the user (you'll discover you cannot launch the application in question). Fast User Switch to the local admin account on the workstation (we always have one on every machine). From that local admin account, run sudo mcxrefresh -n 'shortname' (logging out and back in as the user in question will not work). Fast User Switch back to the user (you'll still not be allowed to run the application). Log the user out and back in (you'll now be able to run the application in question.) Fast User Switch back to the local admin account, log it out, and log back in as the user in question. If you do all that exactly as described it'll keep working through log out & log back in, but NOT through a reboot. If, after a reboot, you try something like logging in as the local admin account, running sudo mcxrefresh -n 'shortname', logging out, then logging in as the user in question, it will NOT work. Yet Another Update We don't have any computer groups in our Open Directory, so it shouldn't be getting any conflicting settings from there. I ran sudo mcxquery -format xml -user shortname -group groupname before & after performing the aforementioned process to allow the application in question to be run and the results were identical (saved the result to files & diff'd... I'm not just guessing here). One Step Forward, Half a Step Back: When the Mac OS X 10.6.5 Server update was released, we upgraded our Open Directory Master to it as the changes included the following managed preferences fixes which I hoped might address this issue: Addresses an issue that could prevent managed preferences from being applied when a user logs in on a workstation that has been idle. Fixes an issue that could prevent administrators from bypassing client management settings on a workstation. This seemed to improve the situation slightly. The application in question now usually launches without error. If, and when it does launch with the "You don't have permission to use the application" error, logging the user out and back in seems to correct it. That said, we've since had to add a couple of applications to the user's ~/Applications/ directory and those are still prevented from launching. The workstations are running Mac OS X 10.6.4, the OD Master (which the workstations are bound to) is running Mac OS 10.6.5 Server (although there are two OD Replicas still running 10.6.4 Server), and we're using Workgroup Manager 10.6.3 (which is included with the Server Admin Tools 10.6.5 upgrade) to add the applications (unsigned, as always). While whitelisted directories also appear to be correctly listed in the results, they too do not actually allow the applications to be run either. What is going on here?! Where else should I be looking?

XmlWriter and lower ASCII characters

Ran into an interesting problem today on my CodePaste.net site: The main RSS and ATOM feeds on the site were broken because one code snippet on the site contained a lower ASCII character (CHR(3)). I don't think this was done on purpose but it was enough to make the feeds fail. After quite a bit of debugging and throwing in a custom error handler into my actual feed generation code that just spit out the raw error instead of running it through the ASP.NET MVC and my own error pipeline I found the actual error. According to the XML spec it looks like any characters below 0x09 are invalid. If you generate an XML document in .NET with an embedded  entity (as mine did to create the error above), you tend to get an XML document error when displaying it in a viewer. For example, here's what the result of my feed output looks like with the invalid character embedded inside of Chrome which displays RSS feeds as raw XML by default: Other browsers show similar error messages. The nice thing about Chrome is that you can actually view source and jump down to see the line that causes the error which allowed me to track down the actual message that failed. If you create an XML document that contains a 0x03 character the XML writer fails outright with the error: '', hexadecimal value 0x03, is an invalid character. The good news is that this behavior is overridable so XML output can at least be created by using the XmlSettings object when configuring the XmlWriter instance. In my RSS configuration code this looks something like this:MemoryStream ms = new MemoryStream(); var settings = new XmlWriterSettings() { CheckCharacters = false }; XmlWriter writer = XmlWriter.Create(ms,settings); and voila the feed now generates. Now generally this is probably NOT a good idea, because as mentioned above these characters are illegal and if you view a raw XML document you'll get validation errors. Luckily though most RSS feed readers however don't care and happily accept and display the feed correctly, which is good because it got me over an embarrassing hump until I figured out a better solution. How to handle extended Characters? I was glad to get the feed fixed for the time being, but now I was still stuck with an interesting dilemma. CodePaste.net accepts user input for code snippets and those code snippets can contain just about anything. This means that ASP.NET's standard request filtering cannot be applied to this content. The code content displayed is encoded before display so for the HTML end the CHR(3) input is not really an issue. While invisible characters are hardly useful in user input it's not uncommon that odd characters show up in code snippets. You know the old fat fingering that happens when you're in the middle of a coding session and those invisible characters do end up sometimes in code editors and then end up pasted into the HTML textbox for pasting as a Codepaste.net snippet. The question is how to filter this text? Looking back at the XML Charset Spec it looks like all characters below 0x20 (space) except for 0x09 (tab), 0x0A (LF), 0x0D (CR) are illegal. Access Control Service: Handling Errors

Another common problem with external authentication is how to deal with sign in errors. In active federation like WS-Trust there are well defined SOAP faults to communicate problem to a client. But with web applications, the error information is typically generated and displayed on the external sign in page. The relying party does not know about the error, nor can it help the user in any way. The Access Control Service allows to post sign in errors to a specified page. You setup this page in the relying party registration. That means that whenever an error occurs in ACS, the error information gets packaged up as a JSON string and posted to the page specified. This way you get structued error information back into you application so you can display a friendlier error message or log the error. I added error page support to my ACS2 sample, which can be downloaded here. What should happen is that [email protected] should be delivered to that users inbox on localhost, user@localhost. Thunderbird works fine at reading user@localhost. I am using Asus U56E laptop and after installing Ubuntu 12.10 alongside Windows 8, I am unable to connect to the Wireless. I have been trying to solve this problem since two weeks and couldn't solve it. Please help. Any answer would be appreciated. Interface Builder error: IBXMLDecoder: The value for key is too large to fit into a 32 bit integer

I'm working with Robert Payne's fork of PSMTabBarControl that works with IB 3.2 (thanks BTW Robert!): http://codaset.com/robertjpayne/psmtabbarcontrol/. The demo application works fine on 64-bit systems, but when I try to open the XIB file in Interface Builder on a 32-bit system I get: IBXMLDecoder: The value (4654500848) for key (myTrackingRectTag) is too large to fit into a 32 bit integer Building the app as 32 bit works, but then running it gives: PSMTabBarControlDemo[9073:80f] * -[NSKeyedUnarchiver decodeInt32ForKey:]: value (4654500848) for key (myTrackingRectTag) too large to fit in 32-bit integer Not sure if this is a generic IB issue that can occur when moving between 64 and 32 bit systems, or if this is a more specific issue with this code. Has anyone else run into this?

How To? Use an Expression Tree to call a Generic Method when the Type is only known at runtime.

Please bear with me; I am very new to expression trees and lambda expressions, but trying to learn. This is something that I solved using reflection, but would like to see how to do it using expression trees. I have a generic function: private void DoSomeThing<T>( param object[] args ) { // Some work is done here. } that I need to call from else where in my class. Now, normally, this would be be simple: DoSomeThing<int>( blah ); but only if I know, at design time that I am working with an int. When I do not know the type until runtime is where I need the help. Like I said, I know how to do it via reflection, but I would like to do it via expression trees, as my (very limited) understanding is that I can do so. Any suggestions or points to sites where I can get this understanding, preferably with sample code?

I have been trying to resolve my issue of spiking cpu caused by php-fpm processes. I've reduced the php-fpm config settings to: pm = ondemand pm.max_children = 12 pm.start_servers = 2 pm.min_spare_servers = 2 pm.max_spare_servers = 10 pm.max_requests = 500 php_admin_value[memory_limit] = 128M Problem still exists. I'm running a Joomla main site (which is having no problems) and a Magento store in a sub-directory. My server is a Linux CentOS, running NGINX, APC, Memcached, Full Page Cache and php-fpm. My server has 8 cores and 16gb dedicated ram. My host has shut down my server several times the past week because my php-fpm processes are consuming the entire network. A lot of the individual php-fpm processes are getting over 50% cpu. I've hired several "professionals" and none of them was able to help me, so now broke and stumped, I'm turning to you guys for help. So any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. the server is not using much memory: Mem: 16777216k total, 1204040k used, 15573176k free My.conf settings: query_cache_size = 128M innodb_buffer_pool_size = 512M open-files-limit = 8192 table_cache=4096 I just noticed that someone changed my innodb_buffer_pool_size to 512M. Shouldn't this be set to 80% of available ram? So I have 16gb ram so it should be set at 12G; however, I set it at 10G. What do you think? I made that change and restart everything. Php-fpm is still spiking cpu. Here is just 1 php-fpm process: 23942 user 17 0 507m 99m 27m R 90.9%CPU 0.6 0:03.46 php-fpm I'm sure there may be more information you will need to help, so just let me know what you guys need to help me figure this out. When I start my Windows 7, I get a notification The system event notification service could not be started.... As a result, I dont have Aero, even though my Windows Experience Index is 3.2. Aero used to work fine before today and I have not installed any new application. I have checked the event log and it reads: The System Event Notification Service service terminated with the following error: Overlapped I/O operation is in progress. I am not sure what this means. I have seen the services.msc and everything is fine there. Moreover the startup time has also extended and the Please wait stays for more than a minute. This is a sudden problem as everything used to work fine until today. For Aero I have tried starting Desktop Window manager (as pointed out by the trouble shooter), but with avail. From what I could understand from the forums, the lack of Aero and increased start-up time comes from a single problem of the System Event Notification Service. This is a personal Computer and I have no active directories installed.
