• MMC not strating in window server 2003

  I have window 2003 server with AD installed. The file server is used to share the folder acroos network. However after 1 hour suddenlt i can't access my shares , it asks me the password and then when i enter it it does not allow me and say access denied. Then i try mmc.exe on server it say The application has failed to start because MS.dll was not loaded How can i fix the problem. Can i re-install the MMC

  We have a file server in our LAN. Windows 2003 Server. It was not included into our domain. Every user has local account on that server, and NTFS permissions are granted to those local accounts. Now we have established a domain controller. Every user has got a domain account. How to include file server into domain so that the permissions would transfer from local accounts to domain accounts? Is it possible to automate this process somehow?

  I have created a simple pastebin in Ruby on Rails and Python. I want to host it in an intranet and it will have like about 1000 users. I want to use one Apache server with a cluster of Mongrel servers. The server itself is a 2 GHz Intel Centrino with 2 GB RAM. What do you think is the best OS to host this? I thought about Damn Small Linux or a custom LFS system. Ubuntu servers come with loads of stuff I don't need. Maybe there are some better OSes? It must be capable of: Running Apache Running Ruby Running Python Running Mongrel with Ruby on Rails SSH Can anyone reccomend me one? Thanks. PS: I am not going to run Windows Server or Mac OS X Server (Mac's are expensive).

  Hi there, so we've procured a monster of a SQL Cluster and 4 screaming fast machines running the apps/WFE to start up our MOSS 2007 Enterprise Server farm, however I've got one server from the old server farm configuration that was just re-imaged and is still running decently, it's a 32 bit machine where the others are 64 bit machines so it really can't serve the same role as a 64 bit machine.   My shop has been using the FreeNX server on Fedora 11 for a while now and mostly getting good results, especially with performance, but we have some annoying problems with client connections. There are two main issues: Client sessions sometimes freeze after a long time (seems to be at least 2 hours of having the session active) We often have to make multiple attempts to start a new client session, especially if a previous session was suspended rather than terminated. In qwuite a few cases, we've had to restart the NX server to get around this. Our NX server configuration is the default except that we've enabled logging level 7 to /var/log/nxserver.log, and set the font server to "unix:/7100" so that it uses xfs. Does anyone have any ideas for making things more stable ?

  I am trying to setup Anywhere Access on a Windows Server 2012 Essential Release Candidate, but keep getting this error: "The domain name was not setup for your server. Wait a few minutes and run the wizard again. An unknown error occurred. Please wait a few minutes and then try again". These are the options that I selected in the Wizard: I want to set up a new domain name Get a personalized domain name from Microsoft Entered my Windows live id and password xxxx.remotewebaccess.com And on the next page the error is displayed. I have setup my router (Linksys WRT160N) to forward all TCP traffic to the Server. UPnP is also enabled. If I hit my public (dynamic) IP (http://188.182.194.182/) I get the Windows Server 2012 homepage. Any ideas?

  Could you please recommend a secure FTP solution for updating files on a remote windows server from windows workstations? We would like to replace the FTP-based workflow with a secure FTP one. Windows Server 2003 on the remotely hosted webserver, WinXP on the workstations. We manage the files via Dreamweaver's built-in FTP. My understanding is Dreamweaver supports sFTP out of the box so I guess I am looking for a good sFTP server for Windows Server 2003. Ideally, that would not require cygwin. Ideally, the solution would use authentication based on the existing windows accounts and permissions. Thank you!

• Troubleshooting an NFS server hanging after authenticated mount request

  I need some advice on troubleshooting an NFS server problem on Scientific Linux (RHEL) 6.1. The log on the server shows that an authenticated mount request was made: Jan 13 16:30:02 ??? rpc.mountd[3996]: authenticated mount request from ????:784 for /shared-storage/cm/shared (/shared-storage/cm/shared) But after that, it does not continue. On the client, it is also hanging. The interesting thing now is that I have two NFS servers, which should be identical, and the one is working perfectly, but the other exhibits the above mentioned behaviour. The problem is also not completely persistent, i. e. sometimes the mount request succeeds. I assume that the problem must be related to the server rather than to the client, because it is working perfectly on the other server. My question is where I should search the problem. I have already re-created the exports using exportfs -r, I have restarted the NFS server, I have compared the rpcinfo outputs of both server - no success. The problem even survives a reboot. Any other ideas are appreciated.   Hello, I have a root-server (i7/24GB/1TB) running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as my OS. After some security audits (OpenVAS, Retina etc) I see that Ubuntu isn't the most secure system for a semi-corporate environment. Its updated from many sources, ofc from the Ubuntu security repo too. But nevertheless I could exploit my OpenSSL install with an exploit from August/September. There are some critical updates needed which Ubuntu does not provide. I was using Debian and Ubuntu for almost 5 years but now I doubt. What distro is secure and up to date from your point of view? How can I make the server more secure? Outsourcing of every software-module to a VM? I am not new to server-hardening, my packages are up to date I read Ubuntu Security Notices and I have no unneeded services installed on my server.   Hello, Im looking for the best way to accomplish a full backup of our "vmail" accounts on our mail server (CentOS "iRedMail" 5.1). I also need to split on 4GB parts the resulting tar or bzip compressed backup, and get this DVD-RW burned, on same server. The idea is to get this procedure to running overnight, once a week. Our mail server holds about 45GB of information. I will appreciate any advise or help on this topic. Thanks.

• nfs server on cygwin slow

  The setup: We run an instance of cygwin nfsd on a Windows 2008 Server (Xeon 3,2 GHz). There are several Sun Solaris and SunOS machines accessing the shares. This is the exports file: /disk3 (rw,all_squash) /disk2 (rw,all_squash) Those paths are soft linked to the relevant cygdrive/d/path/to/dir paths. Some of the folders contain up to 10k files. The Problem: ls -la on the mounted folder on the sun boxes takes 2 - 3 minutes and the general read performance is really bad. cat filename displays the file in slow bursts and this hurts performance on tasks that access those shared files heavily. Processor load is not the issue, the nfs server idles most of the time, the cygwin tasks never get over 1% load.

I have gone through the Terminal Services Configuration to make sure that we had the RDP-Tcp connection enabled and I've checked to see that the server was listening to port 3389. But, I'm not sure if the other Zend Server components (monitor, lighthttpd, scd, jobqueue) have similar options.   Is there something like MLGPO (Multiple Local Group Policy Objects) for Windows Server 2003 R2? I have a 2003 Terminal Server that isn't part of a domain/AD and I'm trying to set local group policies which applies only to certain users and/or groups and the policies differ between those entities. I wanted to avoid using the file permissions trick for on C:\WINDOWS\system32\GroupPolicy as that's an all-or-nothing approach. I can't upgrade this box to Windows Server 2008 as the software used is only supported and only works on 2003. Are there any third-party tools to achieve this?

• Setup my domain at Whois.com as nameservers for a Dedicated Server with Kloxo

  Hello, this is my first time at ServerFault, I'm a stackoverflow user. I'm faceing the next problem and may be its me, but I can't find proper guides to set up a domain and nameservers for a dedicated box. I have a domain, at whois.com, and a Dedicated server at Reliable Hosting Services, the server has 5 IPs, I know that I need 2 of them for the nameservers. Right now, my domain at whois.com is using nsX.whois.com nameservers and it has 2 child nameservers: ns1.mydomain.com & ns2.mydomain.com pointing to those 2 IPs from my Server. Whats next? I still cannot set that domain as my main server domain since it says: To map an IP to a domain, the domain must ping to the same IP, otherwise, the domain will stop working. The domain you are trying to map this IP to, doesn't resolve back to the IP, and so it cannot be set as the default domain for the IP. Well and I'm stuck on those steps, whats next to have my nameservers working and my main domain assigned to my server? Thank you very much and happy new year!!

• Monitoring server room temperature

  I have a small server room with its own AC unit. Recently, the AC died, and the temperature increased from 70 F to 90 F. We rarely go in this room, so I was lucky that someone happened to notice that the fans were running a lot louder than normal as they walked past the door. It looks like I need a way to be notified when the temperature in that room gets too hot. What tools are you using to monitor the temperature in your server room? How does this tool notify you of a problem (email, SNMP, etc). Note: I've read this question on server temperature, but I'm interested in the whole room, not just the inside of a server case. Edit: Thanks for all the great responses so far! Many of these products measure much more than just temperature. What else should I be looking at and why?
