• Activator.CreateInstance fails in Windows Service

  I have an issue with a Windows Service which throws a NullReference exception whenever I try to use var myType = Activator.CreateInstance(typeof(MyType)) There is no problem whenever I run the exact same code in a console window - and after debugging the obvious "which user is running this code" I doubt that it is a mere fact of changing the user running the service as I've tried to run the service using the computer's Administrator account as well as LocalSystem. I'm suspecting a Windows Update fiddling with default user rights but that's a bit of a desperate guess I feel. Remember: The type and assembly exist and works fine - otherwise I wouldn't be able to run the code in a console window. It is only when running in the context of a Windows Service I get an error. The question is: Can I in any way impersonate i.e. LocalSystem in a unittest by creating a GenericPrincipal (how would that GenericPrincipal look)?

• aws-s3 can't find xml-simple, but in gem list

  I'm transitioning to heroku, and need to have AWS-s3 connections to deal with a variety of graphics. I've installed the aws-s3 gem, but one of its dependencies is not being found: xml-simple. My belief is that this is a standard part of RoR, and it is in the gem list. When I deploy to heroku, all is fine, but on my development server, it isn't being found when the code uses it to check the existence of a graphic. It works fine from the console, using s3sh. I'm not quite sure why this is -- what do I need to check? Using OS X 10.6, on a 64 bit machine -- can this be part of it?

  I am porting an old 32-bit COM component that was written in VB6 for the purpose of reading and writing to an Active Directory server. The new solution will be in C# and will use SQL CLR user functions. The assembly that I am trying to deploy to SQL Server contains a reference to System.DirectoryServices. The project does compile without any errors but I am unable to deploy the assembly to the SQL Server because of the following error: Error: Assembly 'system.directoryservices, version=2.0.0.0, culture=neutral, publickeytoken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a.' was not found in the SQL catalog. What are the correct steps for registering System.DirectoryServices on SQL Server?

• How to deal with symbolic links when going between Linux and Windows?

  I have a django project that runs on a Linux server, and I've been working on it both on Linux and OS X. I've noticed that some of the pages are a bit off, to put it politely, in Internet Explorer, and so I checked out the subversion repository on Windows and tried to run a local server. My media directory has symbolic links to all of the media from each different app, and obviously Windows doesn't know what to do with them. I could simply hard-copy or link everything manually in Windows, but then I wouldn't be able to check that in (since the site runs on a Linux server), so it'd be a pain in the neck. What is typically done in this case?

• Lightweight jQuery ColorPicker bound to input and with popup selector

  I've found two jQuery colorpickers that I'm considering using in my app. I have a simple input field that I'm asking users to supply a hex color to. I'd like to use jPicker's "Binded" example, however, the overall size of the jPicker is a bit more than I'd like to add to my app. So that sent me searching and I found a very nifty little compact picker called "Farbtastic", which does exactly what I want with one major exception: It appears to be an inline only solution (meaning, I can't call it in the same manner as jPicker's binded example. Can someone tell me how I might convert Farbtastic to mimic jPicker's binded example? More specifically, I'm looking to place a colorpicker widget (the small color frame icon as in the jPicker example) next to my input field so that it displays the currently selected color, and when clicked, it opens up the color palette widget.

• Good piece of software that can manage the creation of complex web forms, including reporting, etc?

  I have some clients who are requesting for some of their reasonably complex paper-based forms to be converted in to web forms. There's straight Q&A text input stuff, there's questions based around checkboxes, radio boxes, select boxes, maybe the occasional attached image, there's data that has to be entered in a tabular fashion, etc. I am deciding whether I should build a "platform" with properly normalised tables to store all types of form data. But before that, I thought I had better check and see if there is anything like that already on the market. I am looking for a product that can: * Easily create web forms of all types * Store all data in a database * Extensive reporting capability I have had a bit of a look around but there's not a whole lot I can see. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

  I am considering moving from Matlab to Python/numpy for data analysis and numerical simulations. I have used Matlab (and SML-NJ) for years, and am very comfortable in the functional environment without side effects (barring I/O), but am a little reluctant about the side effects in Python. Can people share their favorite gotchas regarding side effects, and if possible, how they got around them? As an example, I was a bit surprised when I tried the following code in Python: lofls = [[]] * 4 #an accident waiting to happen! lofls[0].append(7) #not what I was expecting... print lofls #gives [[7], [7], [7], [7]] #instead, I should have done this (I think) lofls = [[] for x in range(4)] lofls[0].append(7) #only appends to the first list print lofls #gives [[7], [], [], []] thanks in advance

• LINQ to SQL Web Application Best Practices

  In my experience building web applications, I've always used a n-tier approach. A DAL that gets data from the db and populates the objects, and BLL that gets objects from the DAL and performs any business logic required on them, and the website that gets it's display data from the BLL. I've recently started learning LINQ, and most of the examples show the queries occurring right from the Web Application code-behinds(it's possible that I've only seen overly simplified examples). In the n-tier architectures, this was always seen as a big no-no. I'm a bit unsure of how to architect a new Web Application. I've been using the Server Explorer and dbml designer in VS2008 to create the dbml and object relationships. It seems a little unclear to me if the dbml would be considered the DAL layer, if the website should call methods within a BLL, which then would do the LINQ queries, etc. What are some general architecture best practices, or approaches to creating a Web Application solution using LINQ to SQL?

• Drupal setup for proofreaders - "Revision Moderation"

  I would like to have external proofreaders to work directly inside my Drupal site. Basically they should be able to create new revisions, annotate, comment etc without affecting what users see without my approval. Particularly the node might already be public. "Revision Moderation" module sounds a bit like what I want, but it seems not to be so much used, and I run into other modules like "Workflow".   I am designing an Org Chart, model is almost ready and simplified a bit for clarity here. OrgUnit (OrgUnitId, Name, ReportsToOrgUnitId, ...) OrgUnitJobs (OrgUnitJobId, OrgUnitId, JobName, ReportsToOrgUnitJobId, ... ,IsJobGroup) Employee (EmployeeId, ........) OrgUnitJobEmployee (OrgUnitJobId, EmployeeId, AssignedDate, .....,) so I want to know every OrgUnit's ManagerEmployee (should have one), and Employees can have more than one job, but one of them has to be the main job, so I know whats his manager and other stuff. This is going to support a little workflow behind the scnese, so that is why it is not a very simple Org chart Model. so what would you do, would you add properties like (IsManager property to OrgUnitJobs model) or add ManagerOrgUnitJobId to OrgUnitModel. and why? Likewise, for employees would you add IsPrimaryJob property to OrgUnitJobEmployee model, or add PrimaryJobId to Employee Model.

  I am writing a plugin to an old IE-only WYSIWYG-editor which resides in an old CMS. I've created a plugin that opens an popup where the user kan enter the url of an youtube clip. The popup then creates the corrent <object..><param..> markup for the embed and uses Internet Explorers pasteHTML function; var range = plugin.editorDocument.selection.createRange(); var embedHtml = OpenDialog(dialogUrl, null, 400, 200); if (!embedHtml) { return; } range.pasteHTML(embedHtml); I know it's missing a bit of information about some of the variables but you get the picture. The problem is that the <param>-tags gets removed when i run the pasteHTML. I wonder if anyone have an idea of fixing this, and letting me keep my param-tags

As an example I've got the following code: Where does the object "status.menueStatus" have to be defined in order to can be accessed with a dollar sign and braces. • Does anyone know a better alternative to MS Excel's Solver?

  My company has to crunch a lot of data and part of the process involves running the solver and plotting a graph through resulting data points. Obviously there is a lot of copy and paste involved and the whole process is shaky, error prone and all round cluster-fudge. I was wondering if there was an alternative to the solver that can be used so that even if we have to use excel to plot the final graph, there will be a lot less data that needs to be copied and pasted back and forth. It would be great especially if the tool could be easily integrated into a .NET application but I am open to suggestions that may require a little bit of code-fu to get this to work. Thanks!

• Opinions Required: Custom HTML Markup from PHP with or without tag prefix.

  I've created a class in PHP that allows you to create custom HTML markup. It basically works a bit like FB Markup or EE tags. It works off a tag prefix, so you can add tags like this. <ctag:pagination per_page="20" total="500" page="0" base="http://localhost/page?page={page}" mode="smart" adjecents="5" /> My question is: Is the markup above better than the markup below? I'm asking as I'm considering branching my code to rework the tag matching so you can just generate custom html elements. It would well for a drop in HTML5 replacement service. Match the User Agent for a none HTML5 browser and replace the HTML5 elements with your own replacements. <pagination per_page="20" total="500" page="0" base="http://localhost/page?page={page}" mode="smart" adjecents="5" /> PS, if anybody wants to look at the class I've put a download here.

• Problems with ASP.NET State Service version; state service is 1.1, website is 3.5

  Hi there, I have a ASP.NET 3.5 website running on Windows Server 2003 and I'm using the ASP.NET State Service to manage sessions. It will appear to be working then I regularly get an error saying my code needs to have version 2.0 of the State Service running to work (I think that's what it said, I've temporarily switched back to storing sessions InProc). Refresh the page and the error goes away (for a bit, it's bound to come back). So I looked at the properties of the ASP.NET State Service in the Services interface and it's mapping to a .exe in the 1.1 framework folder: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_state.exe There's a corresponding version in the 2.0 framework folder, but I don't know how to add it as a new service. I'm also not sure that adding the 2.0 version (and stopping and/or removing the 1.1 version) will solve the problem. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can provide. Mick

• How can I graph the Lines of Code history for git repo?

  Basically I want to get the number of lines-of-code in the repository after each commit. The only (really crappy) ways I have found is to use git filter-branch to run "wc -l *", and a script that run git reset --hard on each commit, then ran wc -l To make it a bit clearer, when the tool is run, it would output the lines of code of the very first commit, then the second and so on.. • Is writing eSQL database independant or not?

  Using EF we can use LINQ to read data which is rather simple (especialy using fluent calls), but we have less control unless we write eSQL on our own. Is writing eSQL database actually data store independant code? So if we decide to change data store, can the same statements still be used? Is writing eSQL strings in your code pose any serious security threats similar to writing TSQL statements in plain strings? So we moved to SPs. Could we still mode eSQL scripts outside of code as well and use some other technique to make them a bit more secure?

• git: How to diff changed files versus previous versions after a pull?

  I'm new to git, using it via Terminal on Snow Leopard. When I run "git pull" I often want to know what changed between the last version of a file and the new one. Say I want to know what someone else committed to a particular file. How is that done? I'm assuming it's "git diff" with some parameters for commit x versus commit y but I can't seem to get the syntax. I also find "git log" confusing a bit and am not sure where to get the commit ID of my latest version of the file versus the new one.

• What CPAN module can summarize error logs?

  I'm maintaining some website code that will soon dump all its errors and warnings into a log file. In order to make this a bit more pro-active i plan to parse this log file daily, summarize the warnings and errors (i.e. count the occurrence of each specific one and group by either warning/error) and then email this to the devs on the project. This would likely admittedly be rather trivial with a hash and some further fiddling, I wondered if there is a suitable module on CPAN that i could use to do this task. It would either be one that summarizes specifically perl error/warnings logs or one that summarizes arbitrary text files. Any suggestions?

• How to build march-0 for different architectures?

  I have some dylibs to load from python with ctypes. I can load libbass.dylib without problem, but I can't load the self-compiled libmp3lame.dylib. Here is the error I get. OSError: dlopen(libmp3lame.dylib, 6): no suitable image found. Did find: libmp3lame.dylib: mach-o, but wrong architecture Then, I inspect the file type of those libs. Here is the result of libbass.dylib: libbass.dylib: Mach-O universal binary with 2 architectures libbass.dylib (for architecture i386): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library i386 libbass.dylib (for architecture ppc): Mach-O dynamically linked shared library ppc And here is the self-compiled one: libmp3lame.dylib: Mach-O 64-bit dynamically linked shared library x86_64 I did compile the lame library with the install instructions: ./configure make make install I'm new to mac system, here comes the problem: how to build the libmp3lame.dylib so that it supports different architecture I want?   I have a script which creates a drag-and-drop uploader on the page from a div. My DIV will look something like <div class="well uploader" data-type="image" data-callback="product.addimage" data-multi="1"></div> Then I'll have a function something like var product = new function(){ /* Some random stuff */ this.addimage = function(image){ alert('W00T! I HAZ AN IMAGE!'); } /* More random stuff */ } When the upload is complete, I need to call the function in data-callback (In this example, product.addimage). I know with global functions you can just do window[callback]() but I'm not sure the best way to do this with functions under objects. My first thought was to do something like* var obj = window; var parts = callback.split('.'); for(part in parts){ obj = obj[parts[part]]; } obj(); but that seems a bit dirty, is there a better way without using eval because eval is evil? I haven't tested this so I have no idea if it will work

• Inaccurate Logarithm in Python

  I work daily with Python 2.4 at my company. I used the versatile logarithm function 'log' from the standard math library, and when I entered log(2**31, 2) it returned 31.000000000000004, which struck me as a bit odd. I did the same thing with other powers of 2, and it worked perfectly. I ran 'log10(2**31) / log10(2)' and I got a round 31.0 I tried running the same original function in Python 3.0.1, assuming that it was fixed in a more advanced version. Why does this happen? Is it possible that there are some inaccuracies in mathematical functions in Python?

• How to properly use CoreData validation & error framework ?

  I've created a model in Xcode, and for various attributes I have minimum & maximum values defined and that are enforced by coreData at runtime. I'm using NSManagedObject validateValue:forKey:error to check for user input values. I was a bit disappointed to see that the localized error message is not specific, and I get a "The operation couldn't be completed. (Cocoa error 1620)" for too small values and a "The operation couldn't be completed. (Cocoa error 1610)" for too large values. It's written in the coreData documentation that "you can localize most aspects of a managed object model, including entity and property names and error messages". Unfortunately it's not very detailed on how you implement it for error messages. So How do you customize error message ? How do you localize them ? Is it possible to customize it in a way where it will mentioned the reference value ex: "Value should be lower than %@" or "Value should be higher than %@" ?
