• Attempting to install .NET framework 4 *full* installs *client* instead

  On a Win7 SP1 32-bit machine, I initially had .NET 4 client installed and wanted to upgrade to .NET 4 full. I downloaded the full installer dotNetFx40_Full_x86_x64.exe from Microsoft. After download the file showed 48.11MB, the correct size for the full package (vs. 41MB for the client). I ran the installer and it first prompted to repair or remove the existing package. I chose to remove, so uninstalled the two parts, 4 extended and 4 client. Reboot. I reran the installer and it began installation, showing that it was installing the client. Though this raised an eyebrow for me, I let it run to completion, thinking it might be reporting the full install in sections. But after completion, I again ended up with 4 extended and 4 client installed! Obviously I am missing something; ideas...?

• Which VNC for Mac to WinXP Home control?

  Hi, all. I've got a MacBook and a Windows XP Home machine. I'd like to be able to connect into the XP machine from the Mac over VNC, but not through the Web method, where performance seems to be a bit iffy. I've done some research, and it seems everyone is interested in the XP-Mac connection, where I'm looking to go in the other direction. • Find meeting point of 2 objects in 2D, knowing (constant) speed and slope

  I have a gun which fires a projectile which has to hit an enemy. The problem is that the gun has to be automatic, i.e. - choose the angle in which it has to shoot so that the projectile hits the enemy dead in the center. It's been a looooong time since school, and my physics skills are a bit rusty, but they're there. I've been thinking to somehow apply the v = d/t formula to find the time needed for the projectile or enemy to reach a certain point. But the problem is that I can't find the common point for both the projectile and enemy. Yes, I can find a certain point for the projectile, and another for the enemy, but I would need lots of tries to find where the point coincides, which is stupid. There has to be a way to link them together but I can't figure it out. I prepared some drawings and samples: A simple version of my Flash game, dumbed down to the basics, just some shapes: http://axonnsd.org/W/P001/MathSandBox.swf - click the mouse anywhere to fire a projectile. Or, here is an image which describes my problem: So... who has any ideas about how to find x3/y3 - thus leading me to find the angle in which the weapon has to tilt in order to fire a projectile to meet the enemy? EDIT I think it would be clearer if I also mention that I know: the speed of both Enemy and Projectile and the Enemy travels on a straight vertical line.

• Help me find the offending process waking my Windows 7 PC from hibernate every night

  Recently my Windows 7 64-bit PC has started waking every night from hibernation around 3:30am. I have done the following to try and figure out what is causing the issue with no luck: Examined the Windows Event logs. Nothing is noted Ran powercfg -lastwake and that reports nothing c:\powercfg -lastwake Wake History Count - 1 Wake History [0] Wake Source Count - 0 Ran powercfg to find what devices are armed for wake. Interestingly, this reports two items (I've already unchecked the "Allow this device to wake the computer" in device manager): The keyboard and something called the "eHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR)". This is a desktop PC and it does not have an Infrared received, so I'm not sure what that device is. Suffice to say it does not have the option to "Allow device to wake..." available in Device Manager. C:\powercfg -devicequery wake_armed eHome Infrared Receiver (USBCIR) HID Keyboard Device My next step is to disable the Keyboard from wake, but I'm not convined that's the problem. This is on a Dell XPS435 if that helps anyone.

• Understanding Box2d Restitution & Bouncing

  I'm currently trying to implement basketball bouncing into my game using Box2d (jBox2d technically), but I'm a bit confused about restitution. While trying to create the ball in the testbed first, I've run into infinite bouncing, as described in this question, however obviously not using my own implementation. The Box2d manual describes restitution as follows: Restitution is used to make objects bounce. The restitution value is usually set to be between 0 and 1. Consider dropping a ball on a table. A value of zero means the ball won't bounce. This is called an inelastic collision. A value of one means the ball's velocity will be exactly reflected. This is called a perfectly elastic collision. My confusion lies in that I am still getting infinite bouncing with restitution values at 0.75/0.8. The same behavior can be seen in the testbed under Collision Watching - Varying Restitution, on the 6th and 7th balls. I believe the last one has restitution of 1, which makes sense, but I don't understand why the second to last ball bounces infinitely (as is happening with my working basketball I've created). I am looking to understand the restitution concept more fully, as well as look for a solution to infinite bouncing with the Box2d framework. My instinct was to sleep objects that appeared to be moving in very small increments, but this seems like a misuse of the engine. Should I just work with lower restitution values altogether?

• 'DNS server isn't responding' error in windows 7 home premium

  Hi All, I bought a brand new Dell Studio 1558 just last week. It has windows 7 home premium 64-bit installed on it. My friend who is occupying the adjacent room has a laptop with windows XP. Both of us are connecting to the same wireless router of the hotel. My friend is able to connect to the wireless network without any trouble, but when I try to connect, I get the error "DNS service isn't responding". I get this error when I run the troubleshooting option. I met two more people in the same hotel with win XP laptop and they too dont have any problem. I have gone to possibly all the forums and website but I haven't been able to fix this error :(. I have done all the basic troubleshooting but I have no luck yet. Pls help. • Calculating 3d rotation around random axis

  This is actually a solved problem, but I want to understand why my original method didn't work (hoping someone with more knowledge can explain). (Keep in mind, I've not very experienced in 3d programming, having only played with the very basic for a little bit...nor do I have a lot of mathematical experience in this area). I wanted to animate a point rotating around another point at a random axis, say a 45 degrees along the y axis (think of an electron around a nucleus). I know how to rotate using the transform matrix along the X, Y and Z axis, but not an arbitrary (45 degree) axis. Eventually after some research I found a suggestion: Rotate the point by -45 degrees around the Z so that it is aligned. Then rotate by some increment along the Y axis, then rotate it back +45 degrees for every frame tick. While this certainly worked, I felt that it seemed to be more work then needed (too many method calls, math, etc) and would probably be pretty slow at runtime with many points to deal with. I thought maybe it was possible to combine all the rotation matrixes involve into 1 rotation matrix and use that as a single operation. Something like: [ cos(-45) -sin(-45) 0] [ sin(-45) cos(-45) 0] rotate by -45 along Z [ 0 0 1] multiply by [ cos(2) 0 -sin(2)] [ 0 1 0 ] rotate by 2 degrees (my increment) along Y [ sin(2) 0 cos(2)] then multiply that result by (in that order) [ cos(45) -sin(45) 0] [ sin(45) cos(45) 0] rotate by 45 along Z [ 0 0 1] I get 1 mess of a matrix of numbers (since I was working with unknowns and 2 angles), but I felt like it should work. It did not and I found a solution on wiki using a different matirx, but that is something else. I'm not sure if maybe I made an error in multiplying, but my question is: this is actually a viable way to solve the problem, to take all the separate transformations, combine them via multiplying, then use that or not?

• Why do memory-managed languages retain the `new` keyword?

  The new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# creates a new instance of a class. This syntax seems to have been inherited from C++, where new is used specifically to allocate a new instance of a class on the heap, and return a pointer to the new instance. In C++, this is not the only way to construct an object. You can also construct an object on the stack, without using new - and in fact, this way of constructing objects is much more common in C++. So, coming from a C++ background, the new keyword in languages like Java, Javascript, and C# seemed natural and obvious to me. Then I started to learn Python, which doesn't have the new keyword. In Python, an instance is constructed simply by calling the constructor, like: f = Foo() At first, this seemed a bit off to me, until it occurred to me that there's no reason for Python to have new, because everything is an object so there's no need to disambiguate between various constructor syntaxes. But then I thought - what's really the point of new in Java? Why should we say Object o = new Object();? Why not just Object o = Object();? In C++ there's definitely a need for new, since we need to distinguish between allocating on the heap and allocating on the stack, but in Java all objects are constructed on the heap, so why even have the new keyword? The same question could be asked for Javascript. In C#, which I'm much less familiar with, I think new may have some purpose in terms of distinguishing between object types and value types, but I'm not sure. Regardless, it seems to me that many languages which came after C++ simply "inherited" the new keyword - without really needing it. It's almost like a vestigial keyword. We don't seem to need it for any reason, and yet it's there. Question: Am I correct about this? Or is there some compelling reason that new needs to be in C++-inspired memory-managed languages like Java, Javascript and C#?

• Configuring Ubuntu 10.04's Greeter Screen

  I have an Ubuntu server (9.04 at the moment) and an Ubuntu desktop which I recently upgraded to 10.04. Once I'd set up the users and groups on the desktop to match the server (I'm new to this, I think LDAP would do this for me, but that's another question), the friendly greeter screen no longer displays the same set of users1. In 9.04 (the previous version running on the desktop PC) there were four users shown. These had UIDs of 500 to 510. Changing the UIDs is one solution, but that would mean changing the UIDs on all my linux PCs, and that is a might PITA (unless there's a tool to make it less painful). How can I get the greeter in 10.04 to show users with UIDs in the 500s without resorting to changing the UIDs? I use the greeter screen with user pictures as the PC is mainly for use by my young children and clicking the picture is a bit easier (they still need to type a password though).

• Recommend a good DVD or BD replacement drive that can read older CD-R/DVD+R media?

  So I have a bunch of older CD-R (and a few DVD+R) discs that are either suffering from "bit rot", or a case of crappy no-name Chinese DVD drives being unable to read some or all of anymore. I just threw my last no-name DVD drive in the trash after it ejected a disk still spinning causing it to scratch to the point of being useless, so I'm looking for a replacement drive this time around with an eye for quality over a dirt cheap price. I'd prefer a BD drive, but I'll take any suggestions for good, reliable DVD or BD drives that people have reported having good success with for reading older burned media. Any takers?

• Use MvcContrib Grid to Display a Grid of Data in ASP.NET MVC

  The past six articles in this series have looked at how to display a grid of data in an ASP.NET MVC application and how to implement features like sorting, paging, and filtering. In each of these past six tutorials we were responsible for generating the rendered markup for the grid. Our Views included the <table> tags, the <th> elements for the header row, and a foreach loop that emitted a series of <td> elements for each row to display in the grid. While this approach certainly works, it does lead to a bit of repetition and inflates the size of our Views. The ASP.NET MVC framework includes an HtmlHelper class that adds support for rendering HTML elements in a View. An instance of this class is available through the Html object, and is often used in a View to create action links (Html.ActionLink), textboxes (Html.TextBoxFor), and other HTML content. Such content could certainly be created by writing the markup by hand in the View; however, the HtmlHelper makes things easier by offering methods that emit common markup patterns. You can even create your own custom HTML Helpers by adding extension methods to the HtmlHelper class. MvcContrib is a popular, open source project that adds various functionality to the ASP.NET MVC framework. This includes a very versatile Grid HTML Helper that provides a strongly-typed way to construct a grid in your Views. Using MvcContrib's Grid HTML Helper you can ditch the <table>, <tr>, and <td> markup, and instead use syntax like Html.Grid(...). • 12.04 GPU lockup

  I was able to install Ubuntu 12.04 using the alternative version of the image, (64 bit) but when I start the system it tells me the GPU locked up, and instead presents a text only screen. I understand that this site is not for bug reports, but at the same time, I know that there are some versions of the installer than have to be compatible with my graphics card (Nvidia GTS 360M). I assumed that the mere fact that the alternative installer ran was an indication that I could get some sort of graphical interface running after the install. Is there some way of getting some type of graphical interface running on my machine? Even better would be is there a way to get the rest of the system running as normal (i.e. GPU up and running)? If an internet connection is required to download driver support or something similar, directions for how to configure a wireless connection with WPA2-Personal protection from the text-only interface (bash). Any help would be appreciated. Note: I was able to find this which tells me that the card is supported. Note 2: In the install software stage of the install, I was unable to install anything (no internet connection) Update: The exact error message is [8.591394] [drm] 0000:01:00.0: GPU Lockup - switching to software fbcon Update 2: If I try to install with the regular version of Ubuntu, the screen goes staticy. This also happens if I install with Wubi (distasteful I know) and then try to use Ubuntu. Update 3: I've tried xforcevesa, nomodeset and xforcevesa nomodeset as my wubi boot options. Update 4: Thanks to jokerdino, I can now connect to the internet, so internet tools would now be a possibility.

• Does anybody know of any resources to achieve this particular "2.5D" isometric engine effect?

  I understand this is a little vague, but I was hoping somebody might be able to describe a high-level workflow or link to a resource to be able to achieve a specific isometric "2.5D" tile engine effect. I fell in love with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q6ISVaM5Ww this engine. Especially with the lighting and the shaders! He has a brief description of how he achieved what he did, but I could really use a brief flow of where you would start, what you would read up on and learn and the logical order to implement these things. A few specific questions: 1) Is there a heightmap on the ground texture that lets the light reflect brighter on certain parts of it? 2) "..using a special material which calculates the world-space normal vectors of every pixel.." - is this some "magic" special material he has created himself, or can you hazard a guess at what he means? 3) with relation to the above quote - what does he mean by 'world-space normal vectors of every pixel'? 4) I'm guessing I'm being a little bit optimistic when I ask if there's any 'all-in-one' tutorial out there? :)

  I've read quite a few questions on SuperUser of people having laptop shutdown problems but mine is different. My laptop specs: Intel Core i7 3610QM (IvyBridge) NVIDIA GT630M 2GB and Intel GMA4000 8GB RAM Windows 7 64 Bit My laptop occasionally shuts down when playing FarCry 3. It's around 5 months old. I've played games like Crysis and it never shuts down unexpectedly. Since I experienced this shut down recently, I decided for GPU-Z to log the temperatures.   Hey so i'm currently going through the wildbunny blog to learn about collision detection, but i'm a bit confused on how the vectors he's talking about come into play QUOTED BLOG: p = ||A-B|| – (r1+r2) The two spheres are penetrating by distance p. We would also like the penetration vector so that we can correct the penetration once we discover it. This is the vector that moves both circles to the point where they just touch, correcting the penetration. Importantly it is not only just a vector that does this, it is the only vector which corrects the penetration by moving the minimum amount. This is important because we only want to correct the error, not introduce more by moving too much when we correct, or too little. N = (A-B) / ||A-B|| P = N*p Here we have calculated the normalised vector N between the two centres and the penetration vector P by multiplying our unit direction by the penetration distance. Ok so i understand that p is the distance each circle is penetrating each other, but i don't get what exactly N and P is. it seems to me N is just the coordinates of the 3rd point of the right trianlge formed by point A and B (A-B) then being divided by the hypotenuse of that triangle or distance between A and B (||A-B||) Whats the significance of this? Also, what is the penetration vector used for? It seems to me like a movement that one of the circles would perform to get un-penetrated.

• Installing Ubuntu 12.04 on a single GPT SSD which contains Windows 7

  I recently bought a brand new 64 bit PC with a (ASUS) motherboard that supports UEFI and a GPT formatted 240Gb SSD, which contains Windows 7 in the first of 3 (80Gb) partitions. When the system arrived, it booted into Windows 7 like a dream, with no problems. I did not originally want Windows, but the manufacturer does not work with Linux (of any flavour), so I thought I would install Ubuntu into the second partition and dual boot. I downloaded the 12.04 64bit version and proceeded to install. Having selected to 'install', the screen became corrupted, with multicoloured garbage across the middle third of the screen !! So, I rebooted and --- MISSING OPERATING SYSTEM !!! The only way I can now get into Windows is via Super Grub2. First question - what went wrong ? 2nd - Will Ubuntu install on a GPT disk partition ? 3rd - Will it install alongside Windows 7 without screwing the boot mechanism ? 4th - How do I do it ? I have scoured the internet looking for appropriate answers and found NONE ! Please help.......

• Are animated GIFs supported in Google Chrome?

  I have recently been testing a website and found animated gif images that seem to show fine in IE and Firefox but in Google Chrome they only show briefly and then dissapear! This happens if I view the image on the page or view the file directly. Are there any reported problems in displaying GIFs in Chrome, or is it just being fussy? There seemed to have been some problems in older versions of Chrome, but it's hard to believe something as simple as this wouldn't have been fixed by now. The version of Google Chrome I am using is: 4.1.249.1021 Not sure if this is relevant, but some info about the image: Width: 216 pixels Height: 36 pixels Horizontal resolution: 96dpi Vertical resolution: 96dpi Bit Depth: 32 Frame Count: 3 EDIT: Seems to be a problem relating to the latest beta version of Chrome, as it works fine in 4.0.249

• Getting kernel errors when manually mounting VirtualBox shared folders

  Updated: I've rephrased this problem as I understand it a bit more now (and have encountered another problem). I'm using a Fedora 15 guest on a Windows 7 host using VirtualBox. I am trying to mount a partition on the host PC as a shared folder for use in the guest. The folder appears in /media and is accessible when I use the auto-mount feature when setting up the shared folder, but when I attempt to mount without auto-mount I get the following error: $ sudo mount.vboxsf data /mnt/host_data /sbin/mount.vboxsf: Could not add an entry to the mount table.: Invalid argument In addition a popup appears (part of Fedora/GNOME) reporting a crash in the kernel package: WARNING: at lib/list_debug.c:26 __list_add+0x3e/0x81() However the shared folder seems to work, I can certainly browse it (although everything seems to be executable, probably down to a Windows host). Is there something wrong with what I'm doing or is this a bug (and in which case should it be reported to the Linux Kernel team or VirtualBox)?

• Home Server restore fails cannot find boot device

  I am using Windows Home Server to backup my PCs. I recently had a hard drive failure on one of my WHS connected PCs and obtained an identical sized/speed drive for my laptop. I used the latest home server restore CD and did the restore. It said it completed successfully. Upon reboot, it says 'cannot find boot device' and lists all my drives (hard drive, cd, network book) indicating no valid operating system was found. I boot using the Win7 repair disk and while it doesn't see the operating system, it sees the drive and if I go into a command prompt, I can see all my data on the drive. My laptop is Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate. I've tried most everything I can think of. I'm a technical user (software developer) so I'm pretty aware of how things work (or should). I don't feel like I'm missing a simple step here.
