  • Ruby on Rails and database associations

    - by Marco
Hi to all, I'm new to the Ruby world, and there is something unclear to me in defining associations between models. The question is: where is the association saved? For example, if i create a Customer model by executing: generate model Customer name:string age:integer and then i create an Order model generate model Order description:text quantity:integer and then i set the association in the following way: class Customer < ActiveRecord::Base has_many :orders end class Order < ActiveRecord::Base belongs_to :customer end I think here is missing something, for example the foreign key between the two entities. How does it handle the associations created with the keywords "has_many" and "belongs_to" ? Thanks

  • WPF DataGrid Entity Framework: Is it possible to bind a datagrid column to a method/function?

    - by seddler
Hi. I'm wondering if it's possible to bind a gridcolumn (field) to a method or function of an entity? For example I have two entities Person and Company that both inherit the abstract entity Addressee. In my grid I'm listing all Addressees (both persons and companies). I have a column, Name, in the datagrid that I whish to bind to a function GetName(). This function is part of the entity Addressee and based on what type of addressee it is it returns CompanyName (if company) or FirstName+' '+LastName (if person). I also have tried to add a partial class Addressee with a property Name that does the same thing as the function descried over, but this failes when I'm saving to database because the column Name does not exist in database. Can anybody please help me? :-)

  • Insert query results into table in ms access 2010

    - by CodeMed
I need to transform data from one schema into another in an MS Access database. This involves writing queries to select data from the old schema and then inserting the results of the queries into tables in the new schema. The below is an example of what I am trying to do. The SELECT component of the below works fine, but the INSERT component does not work. Can someone show me how to fix the below so that it effectively inserts the results of the SELECT statement into the destination table? INSERT INTO CompaniesTable (CompanyName) VALUES ( SELECT DISTINCT IIF(a.FIRM_NAME IS NULL, b.SUBACCOUNT_COMPANY_NAME, a.FIRM_NAME) AS CompanyName FROM (SELECT ContactID, FIRM_NAME, SUBACCOUNT_COMPANY_NAME FROM qrySummaryData) AS a LEFT JOIN (SELECT ContactID, FIRM_NAME, SUBACCOUNT_COMPANY_NAME FROM qrySummaryData) AS b ON a.ContactID = b.ContactID ); The definition of the target table (CompaniesTable) is: CompanyID Autonumber CompanyName Text Description Text WebSite Text Email Text TypeNumber Number

  • Storm Trident 'average aggregator

    - by E Shindler
I am a newbie to Trident and I'm looking to create an 'Average' aggregator similar to 'Sum(), but for 'Average'.The following does not work: public class Average implements CombinerAggregator<Long>.......{ public Long init(TridentTuple tuple) { (Long)tuple.getValue(0); } public Long Combine(long val1,long val2){ return val1+val2/2; } public Long zero(){ return 0L; } } It may not be exactly syntactically correct, but that's the idea. Please help if you can. Given 2 tuples with values [2,4,1] and [2,2,5] and fields 'a','b' and 'c' and doing an average on field 'b' should return '3'. I'm not entirely sure how init() and zero() work. Thank you so much for your help in advance. Eli

  • How do I retrieve readonly values when using a DetailsView control to update a record?

    - by lincolnk
I'm using a detailsview control to update a record, however in this particular case there's only one field that can be changed out of a many. The update method for my object takes all fields as parameters. When the detailsview's updating method fires, the values for the readonly fields (those rendered as a Label) are not available in the e.NewValues collection. I'm currently grabbing a reference to the object when the detailsview is databound (in the objectdatasource selected event handler), storing it in session and manually adding entries to the e.NewValues collection when updating fires. It works but seems kind of heavy handed. So, is there a better way to get the read only values back into my update method? Or is there a better way of doing this altogether?

  • Counting characters in an Access database column using SQL

    - by jzr
I have the following table col1 col2 col3 col4 ==== ==== ==== ===== 1233 4566 ABCD CDEF 1233 4566 ACD1 CDEF 1233 4566 D1AF CDEF I need to count the characters in col3, so from the data in the previous table it would be: char count ==== ===== A 3 B 1 C 2 D 3 F 1 1 2 Is this possible to achieve by using SQL only? At the moment I am thinking of passing a parameter in to SQL query and count the characters one by one and then sum, however I did not start the VBA part yet, and frankly wouldn't want to do that. This is my query at the moment: PARAMETERS X Long; SELECT First(Mid(TABLE.col3,X,1)) AS [col3 Field], Count(Mid(TABLE.col3,X,1)) AS Dcount FROM TEST GROUP BY Mid(TABLE.col3,X,1) HAVING (((Count(Mid([TABLE].[col3],[X],1)))>=1)); Ideas and help are much appreciated, as I don't usually work with Access and SQL.

  • I am designing a bus timetable using SQL. Each bus route has multiple stops, do I need a different t

    - by Henry
I am trying to come up with the most efficient database as possible. My bus routes all have about 10 stops. The bus starts at number one until it reaches the 10th stop, then it comes back again. This cycle happens 3 times a day. I am really stuck as to how I can efficiently generate the times for the buses and where I should store the stops. If I put all the stops in one field and the times in another, the database won't be very dynamic. If I store all the stops one by one in a column and then the times in another column, there will be a lot of repeating happening further down as one stop has multiple times. Maybe I am missing something, I've only just started learning SQL and this is a task we have been set. Thanks in advance.

  • Binding a combobox in XAML to a childwindow property

    - by AlexB
Hi, I want to display a child window that contains a combobox with several values coming from one of the child window's property: public partial class MyChildWindow : ChildWindow { private ObservableCollection<MyClass> _collectionToBind = // initialize and add items to collection to make sure it s not empty... public ObservableCollection<MyClass> CollectionToBind { get { return _collectionToBind; } set { _collectionToBind = value; } } } How do I bind in XAML my combobox to the ComboBoxContent collection (both are in the same class)? I've tried several things such as: <ComboBox x:Name="linkCombo" ItemsSource="{Binding Path=CollectionToBind }" DisplayMemberPath="Description"> I've only been able to bind it in the code behind file and would like to learn the XAML way to do it. Thank you!

  • Creating a Mac OS application that interacts with all text fields

    - by mjdth
What would be the first step to creating an application for Mac OS X that would take user interaction from any text field in the system? A couple examples of apps that do this are TextExpander and Typinator. What I want to do would be using similar functions to access Text fields throughout the computer during user input to give other additional options, I'm just not sure where to even start in Xcode and with what type of project to use. Any help or links would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

  • Adding business logic to a domain class using a getter style method name

    - by Richard Paul
I'm attempting to add a method to a grails domain class, e.g. class Item { String name String getReversedName() { name.reverse() } } When I attempt to load the application using grails console I get the following error: Caused by: org.springframework.beans.factory.BeanCreationException: Error creating bean with name 'sessionFactory':Invocation of init method failed; nested exception is org.hibernate.PropertyNotFoundException: Could not find a setter for property reversedName in class Item ... 18 more It looks like Hibernate is interpreting getReversedName() as a getter for a property, however in this case it is a derived field and hence should not be persisted. Obviously in my actual code the business logic I'm exposing is more complex but it isn't relevant to this question. I want to be able to call item.reversedName in my code/gsps. How can I provide property (getter) access to a method in a Grails domain class without Grails attempting to map it with Hibernate?

  • I want a machine to learn to categorize short texts

    - by Jasie
Hello, I have a ton of short stories about 500 words long and I want to categorize them into one of, let's say, 20 categories: Entertainment Food Music etc I can hand-classify a bunch of them, but I want to implement machine learning to guess the categories eventually. What's the best way to approach this? Is there a standard approach to machine learning I should be using? I don't think a decision tree would work well since it's text data...I'm completely new in this field. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

  • Working with foreign keys - cannot insert

    - by Industrial
Hi everyone! Doing my first tryouts with foreign keys in a mySQL database and are trying to do a insert, that fails for this reason: Integrity constraint violation: 1452 Cannot add or update a child row: a foreign key constraint fails Does this mean that foreign keys restrict INSERTS as well as DELETES and/or UPDATES on each table that is enforced with foreign keys relations? Thanks! • does a switch idiom make sense in this case?

    - by the ungoverned
I'm writing a parser/handler for a network protocol; the protocol is predefined and I am writing an adapter, in python. In the process of decoding the incoming messages, I've been considering using the idiom I've seen suggested elsewhere for "switch" in python: use a hash table whose keys are the field you want to match on (a string in this case) and whose values are callable expressions: self.switchTab = { 'N': self.handleN, 'M': self.handleM, ... } Where self.handleN, etc., are methods on the current class. The actual switch looks like this: self.switchTab[selector]() According to some profiling I've done with cProfile (and Python 2.5.2) this is actually a little bit faster than a chain of if..elif... statements. My question is, do folks think this is a reasonable choice? I can't imagine that re-framing this in terms of objects and polymorphism would be as fast, and I think the code looks reasonably clear to a reader.

  • Java FileFilter

public class DocFilter extends FileFilter { public boolean accept(File f) { if (f.isDirectory()) { return true; } String extension = Utils.getExtension(f); if (extension != null) { if (extension.equals(Utils.doc) || extension.equals(Utils.docx) ) { return true; } else { return false; } } return false; } //The description of this filter public String getDescription() { return "Just Document Files"; } } Netbeans compiler warned with the error, "No interface expected here" for above code Anyone has idea what was the problem?? I tried changing the 'extends' to 'implements', however, it didn't seem to work that way. and when I changed to implements, the following code cannot work, chooser.addChoosableFileFilter(new DocFilter()); and with this error, "method addChoosableFileFilter in class javax.swing.JFileChooser cannot be applied to given types required: javax.swing.filechooser.FileFilter" Can anyone help on this? Thanks..

  • Project management estimating time, budget and product pricing

    - by dr_hoppa
I have been a software developer for a while but was not interested in the above topics, currently I am put in the position of wanting to learn more about them but don't have a clue where to begin. I have done task estimations and I can do decent ones, but have little/none experience in the field of budget/product pricing and would want to learn more. Do you have any suggestions of good resources that I could look up in order to learn more (eg. books, blogs, ...) This need arised while talking to a friend about management and he brought up management terms that I wasn't aware of (eg. KPI, ...)

  • How to handle right to left languages in Flash (pre version 10)?

    - by Maan Ashgar
Hello, We are currently working with Flex creating a web application. We are having trouble taking Arabic text from the user and displaying correctly (like in a chat feature). While presumably Flash 10 will solve this problem, we don't want to force our users to upgrade. Flash flips the order of the sentence's words. so if I wrote something like "Hello World" in the text field, it will appear as "World Hello" in the chat area. Is there a standard way to work with Right to Left languages in Flash? *We currently flip the order of the words with a function, but it things get messed up when using English or special characters in the chat like :) or :D *

  • Preserving indentation when inserting HTML from MySQL

    - by Benjamin
I am using MySQL and PHP to populate parts of a site, often with HTML stored in a TEXT field. I like to keep my HTML indented so that the source is neat and easy to read, for example: <body> <div> <p>Blahblah</p> </div> </body> However, when the HTML is pulled from MySQL, I end up with: <body> <div> <p>Blahblahblah</p> </div> </body> This is quite ugly when there is a large amount of HTML being inserted into a DIV that is significantly indented. How can I stop this from happening? FYI, I use wordwrap() to keep each line from being too long.

  • DataMapper: using auto_migrate! with many-to-many dependencies?

    - by pschuegr
Hi, I'm trying to migrate my app from MySql to Postgresql, using Rails3-pre and the latest DataMapper. I have several models which are related through many-to-many relationships using :through = Resource, which means that DataMapper creates a join table with foreign keys for both models. I can't auto_migrate! these changes, because I keep getting this: ERROR: cannot drop table users because other objects depend on it DETAIL: constraint artist_users_owner_fk on table artist_users depends on table users constraint site_users_owner_fk on table site_users depends on table users HINT: Use DROP ... CASCADE to drop the dependent objects too. I have tried everything I can think of, and thought I had things working when I added :constraint = :skip to the field definition, but I keep getting that error back when I try and run auto_migrate. I thought that :skip meant that it would ignore the dependents, but maybe that only applies for deleting rows and not dropping tables? I should mention that I can run auto_migrate after i nuke the db once, but after that, errors. Any suggestions or advice much appreciated.

  • XML DOM Manipuation

    - by kunalsawlani
Hi, I am new to XML and have been trying some simple examples and they work fine. I want to do something like the following, but I am not able to figure out how to go about doing this. I have a HTML web page, where the user types in some data in an input field. I want to take that data, parse it to create an XML string, and the apply XSLT transformation to it, and display the result back on the page. All this needs to be done on the client browser, with JavaScript. If some one could point out the steps or the general procedure to go about doing this, it would be great. I have been looking over the net, but the information is so vast, that I have not been able to locate exactly what I need. Thanks

  • Discrete event simulation framework for .NET

    - by Kuba
Does anyone have an experience with some discrete event simulation library that could be used in .NET (C#)? Despite the basic functionality for queing events and dispatching them, it would be fine to have some non-deterministic behavior (e.g. failures simulation). I have some tips and I am even considering to write my own, but first, I would like to collect some recomendations. Thanks. Additional info: i'm not looking explicitly for free product, however, the prize matters :) Just to precise the field i need to map, here is the example of a product: http://www.holushko.com/index.html

  • Using a Time Zone Conversion When Dynamically Generating Results

    - by John
    Hello, If I understand correctly, the code below converts $row["datesubmitted"] from one timezone to another. I would like to print the converted $row["datesubmitted"] dynamically in an HTML table. Is there a way that I can apply the conversion below for each row that is pulled from MySQL? I assume that I can't just plug $row["dt"] into the code since there is no field called "dt" in the MySQL that I am using. Thanks in advance, John $dt = new DateTime($row["datesubmitted"], $tzFrom); $dt->setTimezone($tzTo);
