• What's the proper way to prepare chroot to recover a broken Linux installation?

  This question relates to questions that are asked often. The procedure is frequently mentioned or linked to offsite, but is not often clearly and correctly stated. In an objective to concentrate useful information in one place, this question seeks to provide a clear, correct reference for this procedure. What are the proper steps to prepare a chroot environment for a recovery procedure? In many situations, repairing a broken Linux installation is best done from within the installation. But if the system won't boot, how do you fix it from within? Let's assume you manage to boot into an alternate system. Once there, you need to access your broken installation in order to fix it. Many recovery How-Tos recommend using chroot in order to run programs as if you are actually booted into the broken installation. What is the basic procedure? Are there accepted best-practices to follow? What variables need to be considered in order to adapt the basic preparation steps to a particular recovery task? • Windows 7 delayed file delete

  I'm stuck with a pretty rare problem that happens on Windows 7 OS only. Every time I'm deleting the file with *.exe extension through explorer, the file doesn't get deleted immediately. I'm forced to wait for around one-two minutes before the system will delete the file. The main problem is that I cannot develop in such situation, because every time I build my solution, the old executable gets 'deleted', but is still there. So the new one cannot be created by Visual Studio. This problem breaks the Steam update progress and a few other installers functionality too. Fresh installed Win7 doesn't have this kind of trouble, so I guess this must be some bad registry entries or some services. Browsing the internet for solutions I found only this: http://www.sevenforums.com/software/72091-several-minute-delay-when-deleting-any-exe-file.html. But the solution the author found is not working (change the userName :)). Is there any ideas how to find what causes this to happen? BTW: when I place the file into Trash bin, no delay occurs. When I delete file with Total Commander - no delay too. Tech details: Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.

• SQL Server: Network pauses after installing cheap SATA card: Is there a solution?

  At the risk of being assigned to the "bad DBA" club... I did something desperate, and may have to undo it. Problem: After installing a low cost eSATA board, my SQL Server is intermittently unresponsive (seemingly when there is a lot of IO to the eSATA drive). Questions: 1) Is there a solution to the intermittent unresponsiveness that allows me to keep the eSATA in place? 2) Whether or not (1==true): What is a decent, low cost way to add 1-3 TB storage to SQL for non-critical SQL DBs? Detail: Our SAN is full, and expanding it is costly and will take a month. I have a pressing need to add 1-3 TB for some development DBs (e.g. not mission critical; data loss is OK). As a bandaid, I threw a $20 eSATA PCI board in the Dell 1950 server, and attached an external 2TB eSATA drive. This seemed to work fine, but I notice that our production SQL DBs, and even remote desktop, now experience network "pauses" that they never did before (with both SQL client apps and remote desktop throwing "networking problem" errors). This SQL Server has lots of memory, and runs an instance of SQL 2005 (where all line of business apps reside) and an instance SQL 2008 (for development db's). SQL Server RAM has been appropriately configured, and this setup has run great for years. The server is: Dell 1950 Win2003 x64 14GB RAM PERC controller, 2 mirrored hd's internal Dell SAN over gbit ethernet, dual homed 2 PCIx slots (1 used by NIC for SAN, 1 now in use for eSATA board) Thank you for suggestions!

• Virtual folder for multiple sites

  I am creating a very simple flat file CMS for small (multilingual) websites. The little file writing that goes on is handled by 4 scripts in a publicly available folder in each site named /edit. Given that I have 2 websites now working on that simple system: websiteA/index.php (etc) websiteA/edit/ websiteB/index.php (etc) websiteB/edit/ What is the best way of making that /edit folder "virtual" in order that these and each subsequent website owner can login to their view of /edit and yet the code only exists in one place. I do not want the website owners to have to login from a central website, but from their own /edit directory. I have already read about different solutions seemingly using the <Directory> directive in my httpd.conf declaration for each website, and also using straight mod_rewrite but admit to now becoming confused about some of the terminology. Each website has its own config file which contains path settings and so on. What in your opinion is the best way to handle this? EDIT In light of a reply, I suppose that given a virtual host directive such as this: <VirtualHost 00.00.00.00:80> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/websitea.com ServerName www.websitea.com ServerAlias websitea.com DirectoryIndex index.htm index.php CustomLog logs/websitea combined </VirtualHost> Is it possible to create an alias inside that directive for the folder websitea.com/edit ?

• Bing Desktop not updating the wallpaper anymore

  For some reason, first my workstation and then my tablet stopped updating the wallpaper. First I thought it was my company that was avoiding the app to work properly but then I started noticing that the app itself is a mess: It has two storage and formats for the wallpapers: C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\en-US\Apps\Wallpaper_5386c77076d04cf9a8b5d619b4cba48e\VersionIndependent\images with a #####.jpg (single number) image format & C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\BingDesktop\themes with a ####-##-##.jpg (date) image format. I read here that deleting the themes folder it will get remade with the new images, and it worked. However those are not the files used by the Wallpaper app and deleting the images folder won't get the same result. I have added Bing Desktop to the Firewall white list and the issue is still there. Any ideas? Currently I'm using DisplayFusion to place the wallpaper manually because the company doesn't allow change the wallpapers (policies). Note: I wrote to the DisplayFusion developers to suggest adding a feature to support Bing Wallpapers. • What could cause random files being uploaded without permission?

  I have been having issues lately with a certain directory. It seems someone is placing files into it, or something of that sort, and any attempt to delete them is successful, HOWEVER they reappear over time (maybe not the exact same ones, but random files). I will provide you the information I can and several pictures of my problem: sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b1.jpg Files like this have been appearing in my /visual/ folder, and I have no clue where they are coming from. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b2.jpg This is what is inside on of those weird files, it appears to be nothing problematic. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b4.jpg As you can see, in the time it took me to take the first picture, more odd files showed up. These log files are also being uploaded to this directory, and I know I didn't put them there. sandbox.mys4l.com/visual/files/b7.jpg This inside one of these mysterious .log files, I'm not sure what it's all about. These files only appear to be going into this specific area, and I'm not sure of their origin, only that they will not go away. I have done a full system scan at least twice with an up-to-date virus scan, and have looked for an unknown script which may be writing them there. Nothing has come up, so I come to you guys as I hear this is the best place to find answers. Hope this problem has a solution!

• Exchange 2013 really slow outside of localhost

  We've got a 12 core xeon, 24GB of ram 2012 server. We've recently migrated from exchange 2010 (which was on another server) to exchange 2013 which resides on our new 12 core server. Accessing the OWA on the exchange server is fine; it's very quick and responsive however accessing it via any other computer connect to the domain via a 1 gpbs connection and it'll take 10-15 seconds to load. Also running slow is public calenders that people in my place need to access, again taking 10-15 seconds to access and can sometimes cause outlook to not respond. Further to that we have phones that connect via the internet (of course) to the exchange so people can get work emails when they are out of the office. Guess what, this is also running slow. I've have search for many solutions and have tried changing outlook authentication methods but there is no change in speed. The old exchange 2010 server no longer exists but there was no problem before the migration. Has anyone got any suggestions? Thanks :) Must also mention that server 2012 that exchange 2013 is installed on is also the DC. Update: It would appear that any connection via https is slow. It took more than 15 mins for an outlook client to download 50MB of emails (outlook anywhere).

• Directories Throwing 404 Errors - Virtual Host Configuration and mod_rewrite

  On my production server, things are fine: PHP extension removal and trailing slash rules are in place in my .htaccess file. But locally, this isn't working (well, partially, anyway). I'm running Apache2 with a virtual host for the site in question. I decided to not use the .htaccess file in this case and just add the rules to the httpd-vhosts.conf file instead, which, I've heard, if possible on your server, is a better way to go. • Users Password does not reset after successful login at the console but works fine with SSH

  The title says it all. I have my unsuccessful login attempts set to three. I purposefully fail logging in 2x, then when I SSH into the box successfully the 3rd time my count drops back to zero; exactly what should happen. But at the console I get failed login attempts EVEN for my successful login attempts. I am using RHEL 5.6 and no I am not able to upgrade. • How to securely control access to a backend key server?

  I need to securely encrypt data in my database so that if the database is dumped, hackers are unable to decrypt the data. I'm planning on creating a simple key server on a different machine, and allowing the DB server access to it (restricted by IP address on the key server to permit the DB server). The key server would contain the key required to encrypt/decrypt data. However, if a hacker were able to get a shell on the DB server, they could request the key from the key server and therefore decrypt the data in the database. How could I prevent this (assuming all firewalls are in place, DB is not connected directly to the internet, etc)? i.e. is there some method I could use that could secure a request from the DB server to the key server so that even if a hacker had a shell on the DB server they'd be unable to make those same requests? Signed requests from the DB server could make issuing these requests less trivial - I suppose that'd help increase the amount of time it'd take to compromise the key server, something a hacker probably wouldn't have much of. As far as I can see, if someone can get a shell on the DB server everything's lost anyway. This could be mitigated by using one key per data item in the DB so at least there's not a single "master" key, but multiple keys that the hacker would need to access. What would be a secure method of ensuring requests from the DB server to the key server were authentic and could be trusted?

• Monitor programs accessing my keyboard?

  As of a few days ago, my computer is behaving 'erratically'. When I am typing, my pointer will randomly move to another place in the text and start typing a semi-random string of characters. ("gvyfn" is common; It has typed this about 8 times whilst I composed all the text above) It often highlights part of or all the text and overwrites it. It sometimes goes into loops of pressing Control-alt-delete down, bringing up Windows 7 menu thing. It sometimes even messes with mouseclicks; they have unexpected results, like requesting admin priveledges from applications, instead of switching to their window. I believe this is because it is holding a alt-function key down. This behaviour happens periodically, in waves. It might subside for an hour, then continue to haunt me. I believe it to be a virus or malicious program. My anti-virus (Symantec) and multiply MS rootkit removers could not find anything suspicious. I've noticed that sometimes it re-maps keys, and types gibberish when I press certain keys (though no pattern is evident). I believe a malicious program has installed a keyhook on my computer. I'm wondering... - Is there a way to let me view which programs are emulating keystrokes? - Is there a way to view what keyboard hooks are installed? (I'm also at liberty to try any other techniques to remove this blasted thing. It is easily the most fustrating computer problem I've encountered). Thanks!

• Notepad and Regedit does not launch from C:\Windows or C:\Windows\System32, but will from C:\Windows\SysWOW64

  My work machine was recently updated from Windows XP 64-bit to Windows 7 64-bit. I have found a few odd things that I can not figure out why they are occurring. If I type in Notepad.exe or RegEdit.exe from the Run diaglog the applications will not launch. When executing RegEdit.exe from the Run dialog the UAC does display asking for admin privileges, but the application never launches. Also, if I go to the Start menu and click on Notepad from there, Notepad never launches either. Other programs seem to be okay, like mspaint, wordpad, etc. Now, if I launch Notepad or RegEdit from C:\Windows\SysWOW64 then these applications will run, though I think these are the 32-bit version and not the 64-bit version. I am not sure what is going on. Has anyone seen this behavior before and how to fix it? I have Windows 7 64-bit at home and I don't have this issue. I even copied Notepad.exe from home and place it in the C:\ folder and tried to launch it from there and it still doesn't work. Regards, Mark

• imagecreatefromjpeg() stops working after server upgrade

  We have a server located at a local company's place of business running Solaris/Apache/PHP. They recently did an update to Solaris, Apache, and PHP (security update patches, etc.). Unfortunately it has caused the image manipulation portion of our software to break. imagecreatefromjpeg() is now generating the following error: Warning: imagecreatefromjpeg() [function.imagecreatefromjpeg]: '/path/to/file/filename.jpg' is not a valid JPEG file in /path/to/file/Image.class.php on line XX No PHP code was changed during the server upgrade and it was fully functional before the software upgrades. I checked the files being passed to imagecreatefromjpeg() and they are indeed valid (they open successfully in both image editing software and in my browser). I checked the permissions of the directory from which the files are being opened and they do have read permission. GD library is enabled. I'm not sure what else I can check. Based on the scenario above I am guessing something changed in the software but I don't know what it could be. PHP was version 5.2.5 and is now 5.2.13. I appreciate any guidance as to what could be cause of this issue.

• Excel 2013: VLookup for cells that share common characters within cell but are both surrounded by other non-matching text

  I am pulling information from 2 different databases. The databases use different naming protocol for the exact same item/specified placement however they always have certain components of the name in common. The length of these names can vary throughout each of the databases (see the pic below) so I don't think counting characters would help. I need a formula (probably a vlookup/match/index of some sort) to pair up the names from the 2nd database name with the 1st database name and then place it in the adjacent column(B2) on sheet1. Until this point I've had to match, copy, and paste the pairs manually from one sheet to the other and it takes FOREVER. Any help would be much appreciated!!! For example: Database1 Name in Sheet1,A2: 728x90_Allstate_629930_ALL_JUL_2013_MASSACHUSETTSAUTO_BAN_MSN_ROSMSNAUTOSMASSACHUSETTS_7.2.13 Database2 Name in Sheet2, A13: BAN_MSN_ROSMSNAUTOSMASSACHUSETTS728X90_728X90_DFA Common Factors: "ROSMSNAUTOSMASSACHUSETTS" & "728X90" Therefore A2 and A13 need to pair up In some cases, Database 1 and 2 will have a common name aspect but sizing will be different. They need to have BOTH aspects in common in order to be paired so I would NOT want the below example to pair up. Database1 Name in Sheet1,A2: 728x90_Allstate_629930_ALL_JUL_2013_MASSACHUSETTSAUTO_BAN_MSN_ROSMSNAUTOSMASSACHUSETTS_7.2.13 Database2 Name in Sheet2, A12: BAN_MSN_ROSMSNAUTOSMASSACHUSETTS300X250_300X250_DFA Common Factor: Only "ROSMSNAUTOSMASSACHUSETTS" matches. "728x90" is not equal to "300X250" - Sizing is different so they should not be paired.

• Intermittent 403 errors when using allow to limit access to url with both explicit IP and SetEnvIf

  We are running Apache 2.2.22 on a Solaris 10 environment. We have a specific URL that we want to limit access to by IP. We recently implemented a CDN and now have the added complexity that the IP's that a request are shown to be coming from are actually the CDN servers and not the ultimate end user. In the case that we need to back the CDN out, we want to handle the case where either the CDN is forwarding the request, or the ultimate client is sending the request directly. The CDN sends the end user IP address in an HTTP header (for this scenario that header is called "User-IP"). Here is the configuration that we have put in place: SetEnvIf User-IP (\d+\.\d+\.\d+\.\d+) REAL_USER_IP=$1 SetEnvIf REAL_USER_IP "(10\.1\.2\.3|192\.168\..+)" access_allowed=1 <Location /uri/> Order deny,allow Allow from 10.1.2.3 192.168. allow from env=access_allowed Deny from all </Location> This seems to work fine for a time, however at some point the web server starts serving 403 errors to the end user - so for some reason it is restricting access. The odd thing is that a bounce of the web server seems to resolve the issue, but only for a time - then the behavior comes back. It might be worthwhile to note as well that this URL is delegated to a JBoss server via mod_jk. The denial of access is, however; confirmed to be at the Apache layer and the issue only seems to happen after the server has been running for some time.

I've just installed W8 and haven't made any changes to my new ecosystem and, what happened was that, as I was managing my new drivers, some mess* occurred, I confess, and now what I have left is every single backup tool I made use of W7, like system images, restore dvds, backup up to date monthly and so on, and would like to keep in touch with W8. I'm one of those with problems managing the amd switchable gpu drivers. Now I want to stay with W8 (download version - didn't clean install) but with my old personal files. I don't care to programs updates. I got everything original on dvds, of my interest. Yesterday I tried refreshing W8 once but didn't work. Maybe trying again tonight. What would you guys do in my place, please? *the mess I am talking about is to have disabled my intel (the only driver left) gpu in device manager tool in W8. I got black screen on system boot. You must have heard about "Back up", the process in which we create backup copies of our crucial data into a file, called BKF (backup) file. Having a valid BKF file, provides security to our data against unwanted data loss or corruption. Whenever such a critical situation takes place, we can restore our BKF file and get our data back (but only if backed up earlier). Do you guys ever thought that why a BKF file gets corrupted? What could be the reasons which make the BKF file corrupted or inaccessible? One day while googling, I found a blog post named as: Reasons of BKF file corruption. I read it, it was very informative. • Is there a way to measure wifi traffic on a network from a client?

  Is there some way (preferrably one that comes with an existing tool) to measure the traffic going through the whole WiFi network from a computer connected to it? (That is, not from the AP or something between the modem and AP.) My situation is this: a few months back, the internet connection at my parent's place got really sluggish and laggy. (Lag spikes that cause page loads to time out etc, connections plain getting lost and dropping packets forever.) It's impossible to get mom's husband to do anything about this because he brushes this off with something like "just tell your sister to turn off torrents". Unfortunately the WiFi router's firmware doesn't do traffic logging. I'm not going to risk bricking it to put WRT on it; nor am I keen on rewiring the network to add a proxy to analyse the traffic. (I'm one of those people that make computers break just by looking at them, except machines I own.) I'd like to be able to find out roughly how much data is going over the air here while all the LAN wires are out of the router, all the computers accused of torrenting are off, etc. The idea is to either show that: Even if everything but my macbook is turned off, something is congesting the network. The husband is a systems developer and has a whole lot of mysterious hardware that's not to be touched around, one of them might be culprit. There is barely any traffic on the network, but the internet is still sluggish. Meaning this is likely a problem the ISP should solve. (Some hardware of theirs being glitchy, someone on an aggregated line hogging it constantly...) The network is encrypted, but I can temporarily set it to open for the sake of finding this out. So, in conclusion? Can this be done? Or is there some alternative way I could try to diagnose the problem?

• Routing audio to Bluetooth Headset (non-A2DP) on Android

  I have a non-A2DP single ear BT headset (Plantronics 510) and would like to use it with my Android HTC Magic to listen to low quality audio like podcasts/audio books. After much googling I found that only phone call audio can be routed to the non-A2DP BT headsets. (I would like to know if you have found a ready solution to route all kinds of audio to non-A2DP BT headsets) So I figured, somehow programmatically I can channel the audio to the stream that carries phone call audio. This way I will fool the phone to carry my mp3 audio to my BT headset. If I remove the AudioManager calls in the above code, the audio plays from speaker and if I replace them as shown above then the audio stops coming from speakers, but it doesn't come through the BT headset. So this might be a partial success. I have checked that the BT headset works alright with phone calls. There must be a reason for Android not supporting this. But I can't let go of the feeling that it is not possible to programmatically reroute the audio. Any ideas? P.S. above code needs following permission <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.MODIFY_AUDIO_SETTINGS"/>

• Web Application Problems (web.config errors) HTTP 500.19 with IIS7.5 and ASP.NET v2

  This is driving the whole team crazy. There must be some simple mis-configured part of IIS or our Web Server, but every time we try to run out ASP.NET Web Application on IIS 7.5 we get the following error... Here's the error in full: HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. `Detailed Error Information` Module IIS Web Core Notification Unknown Handler Not yet determined Error Code 0x8007000d Config Error Config File \\?\E:\wwwroot\web.config Requested URL http://localhost:80/Default.aspx Physical Path Logon Method Not yet determined Logon User Not yet determined Config Source -1: 0: The machine is running Windows Server 2008 R2. We're developing our Web Application using Visual Studio 2008. According to Microsoft the code 8007000d means there's a syntax error in our web.config -- except the project builds and runs fine locally. Looking at the web.config in XML Notepad doesn't bring up any syntax errors, either. I'm assuming it must be some sort of poor configuration on my part...? Does anyone know where I might find further information about the error? Nothing is showing in EventViewer, either :( Not sure what else would be helpful to mention... I literally have to delete <httpHandlers> (and the lines inbetween) to stop getting the above error. Once I've done this I get a new 500.19 error, however. The new error is also more explicit and specifically complains that it doesn't recognize the attribute "validate" (as seen on the third line above). Removing this attribute then makes it complain that the same line doesn't have the required "name" attribute. Adding this attribute then brings up ASP.NET error... Could not load file or assembly 'System.web.Extensions, Version=1.0.61025.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=f2cb5667dc123a56' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified. Obviously I think these new errors have just arisen from me deleting the <httpHandlers> tags in the first place -- they're obviously needed by the application -- so the question remains: Why would these tags kick up an error in IIS in the first place??? Do I need to install something to IIS to make it work with them? Thanks again for any help. WEB.CONFIG Here's the troublesome bits of our web.Config... Originally there was a route issue, which was resolved. We're still getting the inner exception with socket errors. We had MS support involved today, and they looked at some traces and network captures. The web service host does round-robin DNS, and they may be responding on a different IP address for the syn syn/ack from one ip, and the next from a different ip. This is not good. This is likely quite specific to our situation, but perhaps it applies to others as well. Microsoft Network Monitor and an application trace got us the information we needed.

  Hi, I have a UITableView with 5 UITableViewCells. I've considered using tags but I'm not sure this is the best route. It feels very dirty. There must be a better way.
