• Why is the font spacing on some websites broken?

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 on a Dell Studio 15 and so far am really impressed. I could not find a solution for my problem by googling. The fonts on some websites do not have proper spacing. they overlap and are very hard to read that way. I am using the Ubuntu standard fonts and have not changed them after installing. Here is a screencap that shows my problem. The problem occurs in Firefox and Chrome the same way, and on the same websites. Thanks for your help. Best regards el

• When profiling a function for time use, what information is desirable?

  I'm writing a program similar to Python's timeit module. The idea is to time a function by executing it anywhere from 10 to 100,000 times depending on how long it takes and then report results. I've read that the most important number is the minimum execution time because this is the number that best reflects how fast the machine can run the code in question in the absence of other programs competing for processor time and memory. This argument makes sense to me. Would you be happy with this? Would you want to know the average time or the standard deviation? Is there some other measure that you consider more important?

• Performance impact of the new mtmalloc memory allocator

  I wrote at a number of occasions (here or here), that it could be really beneficial to use a different memory allocator for highly-threaded workloads, as the standard allocator is well ... the standard, however not very effective as soon as many threads comes into play. I didn't wrote about this as it was in my phase of silence but there was some change in the allocator area, Solaris 10 got a revamped mtmalloc allocator in version Solaris 10 08/11 (as described in "libmtmalloc Improvements"). The new memory allocator was introduced to Solaris development by the PSARC case 2010/212. But what's the effect of this new allocator and how does it works? Rickey C. Weisner wrote a nice article with "How Memory Allocation Affects Performance in Multithreaded Programs" explaining the inner mechanism of various allocators but he also publishes test results comparing Hoard, mtmalloc, umem, new mtmalloc and the libc malloc. Really interesting read and a must for people running applications on servers with a high number of threads.

• 12.04 Dell GX260 resolution for 82845G/GL will not go greater than 1024x768

  I am a newbie to Linux and have installed 12.04 on to an old Dell GX260, I was hoping that I could slowly extract myself from Microsoft - but unless I can fix this simplest of problems I am thinking that this version of Linux is not ready for me yet!! I have read various posts but none seem to match, I believe the driver is installed, but under displays the maximum allowed in the drop down box is 1024x768 (4:3) display is unknown and detect displays does nothing. I have loaded all updates available but still no fix. xrandr shows: VGA1 connected 1024x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x 0mm 1024x768 60.0* 800x600 60.3 56.2 848x480 60.0 640x480 59.9 xrandr --addmode VGA1 1360x768 cannot find mode "1360x768" anything above 1024x768 can not be found, but then I could be doing this out of step!!

• How to remove text from file icons ?

  I am fairly new to Ubuntu (Linux). I noticed when creating a .java file or .py gives me an icon, however when I start writing code it overrides the thumbnail into showing text. Is there a way to disable this silly feature ? When I installed Linux Mint on the VM I noticed I was able to accomplish this task by unchecking "Show text in icon". I know they use Namo as their file manager. I read this thread and it did not work. How to stop Nautilus from creating thumbnails of specific file types?

• How large should I make root, home, and swap partitions?

  Hello, I have a laptop with win7 installed. I have now made a 60gb partition which I want to install ubuntu into. The question I have, before I do the installation, is how large each of the root, swap, and home partition should be? I have read some place that root could be as small as 8GB, but isn't that too small? Since I guess beside ubuntu all the softwares installed will reside there as well? And I think I'm going to set my swap to be 2GB large. My main concern is how large should the root partition should be. I'm mainly going to use ubuntu for programming and browse the web.

The most important things I want this series to answer is : What is it?  Why do I care? How do I do it? I hope that you enjoy this series. Let’s get started: Tip/Trick #16) What is it? Find out version information about Silverlight and which WebKit it is using by going to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/. Why do I care? I’ve had those users that its just easier to give them a site and say copy/paste the line that says User Agent in order to troubleshoot a Silverlight problem. I’ve also been debugging my own Silverlight applications and needed an easy way to determine if the plugin is disabled or not. How do I do it: Simply navigate to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/ and hit the Verify button. An example screenshot is located below: Results from Chrome 7 Results from Internet Explorer 8 (With Silverlight Disabled) Tip/Trick #17) What is it? Use Lambdas whenever you can. Why do I care?  It is my personal opinion that code is easier to read using Lambdas after you get past the syntax. The style located below is much easier to read in my opinion and does the exact same thing. void MainPage_Loaded(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { //Check and see if we have a newer .XAP file on the server Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateAsync(); Application.Current.CheckAndDownloadUpdateCompleted += (s, e) => { if (e.UpdateAvailable) { MessageBox.Show( "An update has been installed. To see the updates please exit and restart the application"); } }; } Tip/Trick #18) What is it? Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number. Why do I care?  We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this. How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore. Tip/Trick #19) What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow. Why do I care?  I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window. How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding. Tip/Trick #20) What is it? Cleanup your XAML. Why do I care?  By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability. How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip) Remove unused Designer markup: 1) Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does? xmlns:d="http://schemas.microsoft.com/expression/blend/2008" xmlns:mc="http://schemas.openxmlformats.org/markup-compatibility/2006" mc:Ignorable="d" d:DesignWidth="640" d:DesignHeight="480" This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it. 2) If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces. 3) Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called. <TextBlock Height="23" Text="TextBlock" />   That is the end of the series. • ubuntu 14.04LTS flickering

  when I start the computer, makes a big high pitch sound and the only thing I can see on the screen is "[[23" written everywhere . I have to start it always through the recovery mode. Ubuntu desktop screen does not flick, but every window that can maximmize and minimize does it like crazy. Like firefox browser, terminal, vlc.. I have a Lap top Acer Aspire One with AMD/ATI graphic card. I read many forums about flickering screen and I try many things , but I still have the problem. I am very new in Ubuntu. Please help

• MediaWiki plugin for dynamic content via forms

  Are there any plugins for MediaWiki that would allow me to create a page that has a form at the top that when filled in populates tags further down in the document? Say someone would put a form with "Source Server:" and "Destination Server:" fields at the top. Once those were typed in it would automatically populate those names into the content lower so that when following the instructions you could just read the docs and not have to mentally replace things, and possibly mess it all up. I'm not looking to make pages that are permanent, just ones that can have values entered before they are followed. Any suggestions?

• (Joomla 1.6) Template position descriptions don't refresh

  I want to change a description of a template position, so when I go to Admin-Extensions-Module Manager I see a different description of a module position in the position list when I edit a module. However, when I change (for instance) the template 'beez_20' and want to rename the name of the position 'debug', I change the description (TPL_BEEZ_20_POSITION_DEBUG) in the language file 'languages\en-GB\en-GB.tpl_beez_20.sys.ini' to something different, say 'Abracadabra'. However, the changes don't appear in the position list and I can find no reference whatsoever of how or when the ini files are read or maybe cached. Does anyone has a clue?

• How to run 2 X sessions with different display managers?

  I read about the virtual terminals a little and that gave me an idea. I searched for a way to have two X sessions simultaneously. I had a look at these sites : 1. How to run multiple user X sessions on the same computer, at the same time? 2. How to drag windows between 2 X servers? I tried startx -- :1 but my earlier terminal (on Ctrl+Alt+F7) hung up. How do I ensure this does not happen? My main need is to get Unity on :0 and Gnome-shell on :1 and switch between them like workspaces. As per 2., switching is not recommended as it is not easy. But if I get at least 1., then I'd be happy. I have Ubuntu 12.04 64bit.

  I did not study CS nor IT. I just became a developer, now working with Java. Actually, since I now work with a big company writing high-scalable web applications, I think I need to be better with details. I have no understanding of what happens underneath of Java. Java Performance, Server-Side Java might be the buzz words?!! I am very poor with those more of low-level details but I do not know where to look honestly. I started looking for some keywords in Amazon, ended up reading books like "pragmatic programmer", "clean code", "code complete" which IMO they are not what I am looking for. Could you please give me some learning resources (books, articles, blog posts, online trainings) for this matter? • how to install gerix on ubuntu 12.04 using backtrack repositories?

  I got instructions from here, and I found several sites with similar instructions but somethig is wrong with the repositories on 12.04. This should work for 11.10 and previous versions. Any ideas how to install backtrack repos and some back track apps on 12.04? I read about downloading the .deb package for gerix and manually making the same folder structure that gerix uses on backtrack, then manually run the python script, but this way didn't work for me either. How can I get gerix installed and working on my Ubuntu 12.04 system?

When my site comes up in a Google search, there are 2 links displayed underneath: I believe these links are called "Google sitemap" and my question is how to configure them in Wordpress. Because while the right link is pointing to the /ueber-mich URL at the website, the left link was pointing to an non-existing /imprint and I had to add that webpage as a workaround for now. And I'd like to change the /imprint to German /impressum anyway (currently I use mod_rewrite to redirect). UPDATE: Dear downvoters and movers, would you mind to READ my question please? My question has been about how to configure Google sitemap links in Wordpress.
