  For some reason I can submit the form data on this Review and Submit page here in Chrome and FF but not IE7: https://checkout.netsuite.com/s.nl?c=659197&n=1&sc=4&category=confirm Email:[email protected] Pass:test03 Click on "here" where it says "Your Third Party Shipper Numbers (To enter one, click here.)" I removed my javascript that automatically refreshes the page to make sure that wasn't refreshing before anything was submitted somehow. Could the difference in IE7 have to do with the fact that the domain of the form (forms.netsuite.com) is different than the domain of the parent page(checkout.netsuite.com) and it's being submitted over HTTPS?

• What would make offsetParent null?

  I am trying to do positioning in JavaScript. I am using a cumulative position function based on the classic quirksmode function that sums offsetTop and offsetLeft for each offsetParent until the top node. However, I am running into an issue where the element I'm interested in has no offsetParent in Firefox. In IE offsetParent exists, but offsetTop and offsetLeft all sum up to 0, so it has the same problem in effect as in Firefox. What would cause an element that is clearly visible and usable on the screen to not have an offsetParent? Or, more practically, how can I find the position of this element in order to place a drop-down beneath it?

I have very long integer sequences that look like this (arbitrary length!): 0000000001110002220033333 Now I need some algorithm to convert this string into something compressed like a9b3a3c3a2d5 Which means "a 9 times, then b 3 times, then a 3 times" and so on, where "a" stands for 0, "b" for 1, "c" for 2 and "d" for 3. How would you do that? So far nothing suitable came to my mind, and I had no luck with google because I didn't really know what to search for. What is this kind of encoding / compression called? PS: I am going to do the encoding with PHP, and the decoding in JavaScript.

  Hi, I'm looking for a way to display a message to the user if he leaves my site after only viewing one page. What I need is a grandParent() method to complement the Mootools parent(), but it appears that one does not exist. What's the best way to accomplish this in either Mootools or pure JavaScript?   I have some code that I thought I had written so that it would play nice on IE. But apparently it does not. I use IE8 for my testing and get quite frustrated with the built-in debugging 'tool'. I found that firebug has a javascript tool that debugs for IE but I have to click it for every page, wait for it to load and then test my script. Is there a way to make IE ALWAYS load the firebug .js file? I tried searching for way to set up a custom header file for my IE installation but was unsuccessful. Is there another tool out there that would be better/easier to use? Another way to test scripts for IE compatibility?

• Using a bookmarklet to track a package

  I'm trying to write a bookmarklet that tracks a package in the mail. First it checks to see if the tracking page is open, if not it opens it in a new tab, and then sets the value of the form to the tracking number. Finally, it submits the form. What I'm so far unable to do is set the value of the form in the case where the bookmarklet opens up a new tab. • Choosing a plotting library for web/browser application

  Hello, I am looking for a plotting/graphing library (mostly to do line plots) for my application. I have been looking at JavaScript APIs (like Google's) but I found them to be slowing down things at client side (I am plotting a quite large number of points). I also found that with client-side libraries, the performance was quite varied depending on the user's computer. With moving to a server-side library I would cut down on this variance, and would have more control over data flow (my data is in a MySQL database). I have then looked at some PHP-based plotting libraries, but a lot of them seem to be "forgotten" (no new version for years). I have been eying pChart, but it has not had an update in almost two years. First, what would you recommend: server-side or client-side approach? Second, what library would you recommend. Paid libraries are definitely an option, as I don't mind paying for quality software that would cut down on my development time. Thanks,

  Hello. I have a javascript widget witch provides standard extension points. One of them is the beforecreate function. It should return false to prevent an item from being created. • How to make a link open in tabbed or new window without target attribute?

  In my application an external website places link in my web page and the link does not have target=_blank. More specifically its iframe in my webpage whose src is another domain which I have no control. The content in this iframe contains links that opens in the same window wiping off my ajax driven web page and taking the user to the other domain. Is there a way to intercept this ( via javascript? ) and make the link open in another window or browser tab? It would be even much better if the link opens within the same iframe on my webpage. Is this possible? Is target="_self" makes the link open in the same iframe?

• Drop down select to change a second drop down select automatically

  I have a webpage where I have a form with several areas to input text and two drop down select options countries is the first one and depending in witch country is chosen the second should display the estates for that country to choose. my page connects to my db from where it gets the countries and estates.... I have a table with the country names and one table for each country estates. so all I'm trying to do is making it change the states to choose from automatically depending witch country got selected with out summiting the form since that enters a new entry to another table in my db. I seen that using javascript is the way to go but can't get it to work in my case since I don't want to be sent to another page or summit the form. here is part of my code any help will be greatly appreciated. • I want to query whitepages.com 4,000 times, how to save the results?

  I have an old customer list of 4,000 businesses. I want to determine if the phone numbers associated with each listing are still working (and therefore the business is probably still open). I can put each number in whitepages.com and check them one by one... but want to automate the results. I have looked at their API and can't digest it. I can form the correct query URL, but trying things like cURL -O doesn't work. I have access to Mac tools, Unix tools, and could try various javascript stuff if anyone could point me in the right direction... would even pay. Help? Thx

• Typed Arrays in Gecko 2: Float32Array concatenation and expansion.

  Hi all, I'm a bit confused with Javascript Typed Arrays. What I have several *Float32Array*s, that have no concat method. I'd like to concatenate them all inside another Float32Array, but: as I said before, there is no concatenation method if I try to write past the array length, the array is not expanded (aka this won't work - please note that event.frameBuffer and buffer are both Float32Array and that I don't know what the final length of my buffer will be): var length_now = buffer.length; for (var i = 0; i < event.frameBuffer.length; i += 1) { buffer [length_now + i] = event.frameBuffer[i]; } The only solution I found is to copy the Float32Array in a regular array, that's definitely not what I want.   I'm having an issue where I'm trying to update the background gradient of an element with JavaScript based on values I specify. I tried this route: elem.style.backgroundImage = '-webkit-gradient(radial, '+x+' '+y+', 0, '+x+' '+y+', 800, from(#ccc), to(#333)), -moz-radial-gradient('+x+'px '+y+'px, circle cover, #ccc 0, #333 100%)'; Since Webkit and Gecko have two different syntaxes for CSS3 gradients, I need to specify both. However, the above code doesn't work. It works if I only have just the Gecko syntax or just the Webkit syntax, not both. I think you can check for CSS gradient support, but my question is, is there a way to check which syntax needs to be used without browser sniffing? Keep in mind that I need to set my gradients this way since the x and y coordinates of the gradient change dynamically. Hope this makes sense, thanks.

  Okay, so i have the following html added to a site using javascript/greasemonkey. (just sample) *a id='abc'*HEllo*/a* *a id='xyz'*Hello*/a* (excuse me, i've had to replace the '<' '' with * since hyperlinks for new users aren't allowed!) and i've also added a click event listener for the elements. All works fine up to this point, the click event gets fired when i click the element. But... i have another function in the script, which upon a certain condition, modifies that html, ie it appends it, so it looks like: *a id='abc'*HEllo*/a* *a id='xyz'*Hello*/a* *a id='123'*Hello*/a* but when this is done, it breaks the listeners i added for the first two elements... nothing happens when i click them. if i comment out the call to the function which does the appending, it all starts working again! help please...

• onclick event not working after ie7 reload

  I am using Javascript to dynamically create part of my page content. A routine that generates a set of img tags is called from the window.onload event. Those img tags are assigned attributes, including an onclick event. The img tags host thumbnail images that, when clicked, change the src property of the image in the main view div. Everything works properly in FF 3.5. I can reload the page and the dynamically generated onclick events continue to fire as expected. In IE7 everything works normally until I reload the page. At that point events that were hard coded into the xhtml section continue to work as expected, and the dynamically generated img tags are shown on the page, but their onclick events fail to work. How can I get IE7 to implement the dynamically generated click events on reload?

• jQuery and ASP.NET drop down problem

  I have a drop down in an ASP.NET page. Whenever the value of the drop down changes an ASP.NET AJAX request is made to the server. I also attached a jQuery "change" event handler to that list to execute some code when the value is changed. So, probably two different event handlers are being attached to the same drop down, and it's causing some problems, i.e., sometimes wrong drop down values are sent to the server. I don't know why is this happening but I think attaching two different event handlers to a same drop down may be the reason. Can anyone tell me what is the problem here? If what I guessed is true, then is there any other way to execute some custom javascript code before asp.net AJAX request is sent ?

• How to lock non-browser clients from submitting a request?

  I want to block non-browser clients from accessing certain pages / successfully making a request. The website content is served to authenticated users. What happens is that our user gives his credentials to our website to 3rd party - it can be another website or a mobile application - that performs requests on his behalf. Say there is a form that the user fills out and sends a message. Can I protect this form so that the server processing the submission can tell whether the user has submitted it directly from the browser or not? I don't want to use CAPTCHA for usability reasons. Can I do it with some javascript?

  Im learning JQuery from a Sitepoint Book but Im trying to apply all the lessons to a Rails App. In one lesson, we are taught how to switch to a different stylesheet if the browser window is resized beyond a certain point. I've tried using the Rails helper: <%= stylesheet_link_tag 'base', :media => 'screen' %> but that doesn't work in a .js file. How do I link to an external stylesheet in a .js file using Ruby? Can I use Ruby on Rails code in a .js file? Thanks.
