• Should I use WPF or Windows Forms Application for my project in C#?

  I am developing a Client-Server based application in which client application will access server database to store billing information. It will also have report generation facility. Windows Forms is good in document printing & I don't see such facility or controls in WPF. If I am wrong then please correct me. I want database security, which DB should I use, SQL Server, MySQL or Oracle. I would like to use free DB but security is my priority. Please suggest how I can implement a Client-Server architecture with multiple clients in C#? Thank you Geeks!!!

• Creating Bordless Windows with custom visual

  Hi I'd like to create a custom window using WPF that doesn't look like the regular window. The window I want to create is similar to MacOs window, with title centered (with dropshadow effect), and controls button on left side of the window. I did create a bordless window, but some questions I have: 1 - How can I set it functionality of maximize, minimize and close buttons in XAML (if it's possible)? 2 - How can I define a window template so every new window I create have the same look and feel? 3 - Is it possible to create the Aqua maximize, minimize and close buttons using only elements from WPF (without using images)?   Hi I have scenario, where there are html hidden fields, the page can be redirected to itself, with parameters, I have sessions too. Now depending on session value I want to set some hidden values, so that it can be picked up from javascript and can do certain operation. But, the problem is I have no idea about how to get/ set values into html controls using asp.net, and also do not know whether this is possible or not. Please note, it is imperative that I need some way to hold some data that can be set using asp.net and can be picked up by javascript.   I have a strange layout for an ItemsControl. I have a 4x6 grid with the following pattern: 1 2 3 4 13 14 15 16 5 6 7 8 17 18 19 20 9 10 11 12 21 22 23 24 Is there an easy way to do this? should I be using 6 Items Controls and take "sections" of my list? is there a good way to do this? What about notification? It's important to note that I may, or may not, have all 24 entries present, but the layout needs to be maintained (think of it like filled slots on a bingo card or something)

• How to get ListView to grow to the size of content

  So I have a fairly complex activity the parent being a linearlayout with a table with some basic info and buttons. Then a couple listviews that the user can add items to. So these listviews grow more and more as the user uses the app. The problem I'm running into is the Linearlayout is bigger then the resolution of the screen and so it needs to scroll. So the scrolling doesn't work on the Listviews. I've tried playing with changing the layout_height of the listview and its child element with no success. Is there a way to make these couple listviews expand out to the amount of children? Or am I going about this all wrong? If so what other controls can I use? I'm open to any ideas. I really just don't know how to go about this. Thanks

I have recently come across some extremely bad (in my eyes) legacy code that lends itself to chaos (someHugeJavafile.js) which contains a lot of the logic used in many of the pages. Let's say for example that you have a Form that you need to complete. 1. Personal Details 2. Address Information 3. Little bit more about yourself You don't want to overload the person with all the fields at once, so you decide to split it up into steps. Do you create separate pages for Personal Details, Address Information and a Little bit more about yourself. Do you create controls for each and hide and show them on a postback or using some update panel? Do you use jQuery and do some checking to ensure that the person has completed the required fields for the step and show the new "section" by using .show()? How do you usually find the balance?

• Align text with right edge of an html form

  I have an html form where the width of a textarea is specified with cols=. I want the textarea to have a specific width in terms of number of characters. However, I also want some controls to be right-justified to the right edge of the textarea. They're not in the textarea, but directly above or below it. Is it possible to do this? I was thinking a possible approach might be enclosing the textarea with some type of container that could grow to the width of the textarea, but I'm not sure how I could right-justify text within that.

  How can I hide the New / Actions / Upload / Settings menus within a list or document library in SharePoint? Note that I need to be able to hide these menus for a particular list definition (template) and not just all lists or document libraries. One possible way that I know of is to register a , and set the ControlClass element to a control that inherits from WebControl. In the WebControl, I can override OnPreRender, which then does this: foreach (Control control in this.Parent.Controls) { if (control.ToString() == "Microsoft.SharePoint.WebControls.NewMenu") { control.Visible = false; } // etc } This is pretty hacky, and I was just wondering if there is a better way of doing it?

• Is it so bad to have heaps of elements in your DOM?

  I am making a real estate non interactive display for their shop window. I have kicked jCarousel into doing what I want: Add panels per AJAX Towards the end of the current set, go and AJAX some new panels and insert them This works fine, but it appears calling jQuery's remove() on the prior elements cause an ugly bump. I'm not sure if calling hide() will free up any resources, as the element will still exist (and the element will be off screen anyway). I've seen this, and tried carousel.reset() from within a callback. It just clears out all the elements. This will be running on Google Chrome on Windows XP, and will solely by displaying on LCD televisions. I am wondering, if I can't find a reasonable solution to remove the extra DOM elements, will it bring my application to a crawl, or will Chrome do some clever garbage collecting? Or, how would you solve this problem? Thanks

  I am using clojure.contrib.sql to fetch some records from an SQLite database. (defn read-all-foo [] (with-connection *db* (with-query-results res ["select * from foo"] (into [] res)))) Now, I don't really want to realize the whole sequence before returning from the function (i.e. I want to keep it lazy), but if I return res directly or wrap it some kind of lazy wrapper (for example I want to make a certain map transformation on result sequence), SQL-related bindings will be reset and connection will be closed after I return, so realizing the sequence will throw an exception. How can I enclose the whole function in a closure and return a kind of anonymous iterator block (like yield in C# or Python)? Or is there another way to return a lazy sequence from this function?

  I have the following set of controls. Scenario 1: If you select one of the first 3 radio buttons and click enter, focus will jump to the Passport Number text box. If the user selects "Other", the "Other, Please Specify" textbox is enabled and, for convenience, screen focus (the cursor is moved) to that textbox. Scenario 2: The "specify Other" text box is hidden until the user clicks on the Other Radio button. Upon doing so, the textbox is made visible and the cursor is placed in this textbox. Which scenario do you feel is a better approach? Perhaps you have another variation? Please state your reasoning. I would also appreciate it if you could make a generalized statement as to when hiding is better than disabling or vice versa, but I am also interested in this particular example. Thanks. Afetrthought: Perhaps, in the 2nd example, the "Please Specify" text would only appear after the user has selected the 'Other' radio button.

• How do I play a video through .net in windows 7

  I had setup an app to play a video using the library suggested here this worked great for me for a long time until my machine was upgraded. In windows 7 I get the following exception that I'd never seen under XP: `System.BadImageFormatException: is not a valid Win32 application. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700C1) at MainApp.Controls.MediaControl.StopVideo() at System.Windows.Forms.Form.WmClose(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.Control.ControlNativeWindow.WndProc(Message& m) at System.Windows.Forms.NativeWindow.Callback(IntPtr hWnd, Int32 msg, IntPtr wparam, IntPtr lparam)` I've installed the June 2010 DirectX SDK and I'm still getting this error. Is there a different library I should be using or some setting that needs to be changed?

By example, for what I understand, adorners can add some controls to a UI element, but I think that the same behavior can be achieved through a custom control that contains the additional element. So, my question is: when should I prefer adorners to a more complex (but I think, more flexible) custom control?   I am getting an error in visual studio that appears to be flat out wrong. Here it is: The tag contains duplicate 'ID' attributes. on the following line: Rica.Yoodul.MiniSites.BaseMiniSiteUserControl ucMaster = (Rica.Yoodul.MiniSites.BaseMiniSiteUserControl)Page.LoadControl("~/MiniSites/" + templateName + "/Master.ascx"); I have checked though both the master and child pages for repeats of the id I last added (the only one added since last successful test) and the ID is used once across both files. Other than controls (e.g ), is there anything this error refers to? Or is there a workaround? I have checked I am editing the right files. On the face of it this appears to be a visual studio bug, but I want to be sure.

  Hi, I'm trying to do some automation of windows applications. To do whatever I want to do, I need the window handles of some controls. Before, I would accomplish this with a combination EnumWindows, EnumChildWindows and GetWindowText. But now, some newer programs no longer have toolbar with buttons on it. Instead, they have a ribbon. This didn't seem like much of a problem to me at first, but now I notice that the buttons on the ribbon don't show up in EnumChildWindows! Or at least GetWindowText does not return the same text as the one seen on the screen. So to make a long story short: Can anybody tell me how I can programatically find the handle of a button on a ribbon? Thanks. Regards, ldx

  Is it possible to use jQuery UI Button icons with <input type="submit"> elements? The documentation example uses <button> elements, but it does not explicitly say whether or not icons work with input buttons. I'd like to add icons to ASP.NET Button controls which render as <input type="submit">. This is what I've tried: $("input.add").button({ icons: { primary: "ui-icon-circle-plus" } }); The button is styled correctly except for the missing icon. Am I missing something?

• Will Visual Studio 2010 support HTML 5?

  Since Visual Studio 2010 is slated for release in March of 2010 and HTML 5 is now starting to be used even more widely, I would like to know if Visual Studio will ship with HTML 5 templates, standard controls and support for the more common markup? A definition for support of HTML 5 would be that any new version of Visual Studio should have similar support for code-completion, validation and markup that is currently supported for HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 and 1.1. Update From the Visual Web Develolper Team Blog: HTML 5 intellisense and validation schema for Visual Studio 2008 and Visual Web Developer is for downloading. Follow the instructions posted on the page to install the new scheme. Seems like the Visual Studio Team will be supporting HTML 5 after all.

• wordpress path url in js script file

  I added custom script wp_enqueue_script('functions', get_bloginfo('template_url') . '/js/functions.js', 'search', null, false); works great, except in the functions.js i have Reset.style.background = "url('../images/searchfield_clear.png') no-repeat top left"; now this used to work before, until changed to pretty permalinks and .htaccess the folder hierarchy is like: themename/js themename/images (the images and js folder are in themename folder) i tried ../images - ./image - /images normally it should go back 1 level where-ever the js file is located.... i dont want to use full path is there a other way that wordpress can recognize in the javascript file to have the correct path? currently i am just confused what i am doing wrong

  Hi, I am using Silverlight 3 and I am trying to take a screenshot of esri map. I was able to take a screenshot and save as a file for silverlight controls, but when I try to access Esri map image, I get "Pixel access not allowed" error. I heard this is because of different domain (I am trying to get map image on the client side, and map image is not accessible at server side in my silverlight application). So I am trying to find a function from esri so that I can save the map image as a file. does anybody know how to do this? or any other way around?

  Trying to test basic browser concepts in a WPF (C#/XAML, .NET 4.0) WebBrowser application. So far, the only problem is programatically zooming. Has anyone had any experience with this? MSDN lists nothing: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/system.windows.controls.webbrowser.aspx Additionally, I have tried various things such as RenderTransform options to no avail. • Upgrading PEAR in command prompt: "Error:Failed to mkdir C:\..."

  I've just installed PEAR into WAMP attempting to follow this article. It all seems to have gone okay but when I type "pear upgrade" into the command prompt I get this error: ERROR: failed to mkdir c:\php\pear\docs\Archive_Tar\docs It is looking on the wrong drive (and missing a subdirectory in that path by the looks of it). It should be looking for D:\php\php5.3.13\pear\docs\Archive_Tar\docs When specifying installation directories I chose ones on the D:\ and thats where the folder structure is, the include_path in both php.ini locations have also been updated. I've also reset the WAMP server after making the changes. How do I set it to look / install the package in the right place?
