• Live CD installer gets stuck with a grayed out forward button.

  I have a CD with Ubuntu 10.10 and a laptop with Ubuntu 8.10. The laptop had all sorts of crud on it, and anything I wanted to keep was backed up on an external drive, so I was happy to do a wipe and reinstall instead of an update. So after a bit of faffing about trying to work out how to get the thing to boot from the CD drive, I did that. So the screen comes up with the choice: the options are Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. I choose to install and to overwrite my current installation. So far so good. I then get a progress bar labelled something like copying files (I forget the exact wording) and further options to fill in for my location, keyboard locale, username and password. On each of these screens there are forward and back buttons. On the last screen (password), the forward button is greyed out. Well, I think to myself, no doubt it will become active when that copying files progress bar completes. The progress bar never completes. It hangs. And the label changes from copying files to the chirpy ready when you are. The forward button remains greyed out. The back button is as unhelpful as you'd expect it to be. And there's nothing else to click. We have reached an impasse. I tried restarting the laptop, to test whether it actually was properly installed. It wasn't. I tried to run Ubuntu live from the CD, to test whether the disk was damaged. That wouldn't work either, but I suspect it's just because the laptop is old and has a slow disk drive. I'm typing this question on another computer using the Ubuntu live CD and it's working fine. So there's nothing wrong with the CD.

• How can I find out what .desktop file is being launched?

  I've used click install and click register to install a click app on Ubuntu (not Ubuntu Touch). The version was 0.5.1. Now, a new version (v0.5.6) is available and I installed it using the same method. Is there some tool that shows where a given .desktop file is, or is there a way to see the equivalent to $PATH for .desktop files? • Packaging MATLAB (or, more generally, a large binary, proprietary piece of software)

  I'm trying to package MATLAB for internal distribution, but this could apply to any piece of software with the same architecture. In fact, I'm packaging multiple releases of MATLAB to be installed concurrently. Key things Very large installation size (~4 GB) Composed of a core, and several plugins (toolboxes) Initially, I created a single "source" package (matlab2011b) that builds several .debs (mainly matlab2011b-core and matlab2011b-toolbox-* for each toolbox). The control file is just the standard all: dh $@ There is no Makefile; only copying files. I use a number of debian/*.install files to specify files to copy from a copy of an installation to /usr/lib/. The problem is, every time I build the thing (say, to make a correction to the core package), it recopies every file listed in the *.install file to e.g debian/$packagename/usr/ (the build phase), and then has to bundle that into a .deb file. It takes a long time, on the order of hours, and is doing a lot of extra work. So my questions are: Can you make dh_install do a hardlink copy (like cp -l) to save time? (AFAICT from the man page, no.) Maybe I should just get it to do this in the Makefile? (That's gonna b e big Makefile.) Can you make debuild only rebuild .debs that need rebuilding? Or specify which .debs to rebuild? Is my approach completely stupid? Should I break each of the toolboxes into its own source package too? (I'll have to do some silly templating or something, because there's hundreds of them. :/)

• Single complex or multiple simple autoload functions [on hold]

  Using the spl_autoload_register(), should I use a single autoload function that contains all the logic to determine where the include files are or should I break each include grouping into it's own function with it's own logic to include the files for the called function? As the places where include files may reside expands so too will the logic of a single function. If I break it into multiple functions I can add functions as new groupings are added, but the functions will be copy/pastes of each other with minor alterations. Currently I have a tool with a single registered autoload function that picks apart the class name and tries to predict where it is and then includes it. Due to naming conventions for the project this has been pretty simple. if has namespace if in template namespace look in Root\Templates else look in Root\Modules\Namespace else look in Root\System if file exists include But we are starting to include Interfaces and Traits into our codebase and it hurts me to include the type of a thing in it's name. So we are looking at instead of a single autoload function that digs through the class name and looks for the file and has increasingly complex logic to it, we are looking at having multiple autoload functions registered. But each one follows the same pattern and any time I see that I get paranoid about code copying. function systemAutoloadFunc logic to create probable filename if filename exists in system include it and return true else return false function moduleAutoloadFunc logic to create probable filename if filename exists in modules include it and return true else return false Every autoload function will follow that pattern and the last of each function if filename exists, include return true else return false is going to be identical code. Or is it just that, paranoia and the multiple functions with some identical code is the best option?

• Changing the Default Install Location of an MSI

  A few months ago, I had to tweak an MSI installer.  It was installing into a specific directory (named the same as the application) underneath Program Files.  Since the location of Program Files can change from machine to machine, the MSI has a special token you can use for Program Files (as well as for the application name).  So the current value for “DefaultLocation” of the Application Folder was: [ProgramFilesFolder]\[ProductName] During installation, these tokens would be replaced by the actual location based on the current machine. I needed to change this to a specific folder underneath the users My Documents directory.  I poked around the help file and I could not find where these special tokens (like “[ProgramFilesFolder]”) were defined.  Obviously, there must be some specific set of values that are available and I’m sure My Documents is one of them.   Instead of creating a fullblown NetBeans Platform application for doing WYSIWYG editing for EPUB, similar to Sigil, I decided to focus purely on the very narrow scope of EPUB reading. The scope is narrower and, since the application will be a lot less ambitious and smaller, a pure JavaFX implementation makes sense. When you somehow get, e.g., buy, an EPUB file, you typically read it on a tablet or mobile device. However, some people in the world, e.g., me, still have laptops. Therefore, I'm creating a small JavaFX application that unzips EPUB files, into a temp directory, and then loads them into a JavaFX WebView. Arabic support: For an application like this, simplicity is the most important thing. Very few buttons, very few options, preferably no configuration of anything. Just let the user open the EPUB file and read it, that's it, nothing fancy. CSS stylesheets and images are correctly read. It's exactly what it looks like, a reader for EPUB files. The back and forward buttons are working and you can also switch to the table of contents. When it is complete, which it pretty much is right now, publishers of EPUB files can make this small app available from their site, to simplify life for their readers, since it will run easily and well on all operating systems.

• Windows Recovery from Grub messed up my computer?

  Ok so I'm a noob when it comes to Operating Systems and I think I really messed up this time. So I have a laptop that dual boots Windows 7 and Linux Mint 11. I was trying to boot into Windows 7 but it would just have a black screen with a blinking cursor. So I turned off my computer and tried again. Still a black screen with a cursor. So I thought "well it must be broken somehow and I remembered seeing something like 'Windows Recovery' from the boot menu so I should try it." So when I turned on my computer a third time I selected 'Windows Recovery' (Something like that I can't remember exactly what it was called). After I had selected that I got a white Windows window that said in big red letters "ERROR". I turned off my computer again a turned it back on expecting the Grub menu to reappear. I was wrong. Instead I am greeted with error: no such partition grub rescue. Then I put in a live CD for ubuntu 11.04 and tried looking at my partitions using the disk manager. Looking at my partitions I notice that there isn't a Linux partition anymore and in its place is a unallocated space partition yet the Linux Swap partition is still there. My windows partition is still fine and I can access the files in it. If you understand what has happened, is there anyway I can get my files back? I don't care about reinstalling the OS again. I just want those files that are in the Linux Mint partition.

• Partitions for dual boot install with Windows

  Following is the layout of the current partitions of my single hard drive viewed from Windows 7: C: has Windows 7 system files and my personal data; Q: for Lenovo recovery; SYSTEM_DRV: for Windows boot files; My goals are: to create another partition D: for my personal data, and dedicate C: for Windows system files and applications only. to install Ubuntu alongside Windows. D: will be shared between the two OSes. My questions are: Is it correct that the free space generated from shrinking C: will only be able to create an extended partition, since there are already 3 primary partitions? So must D: be one logical partition on the extended partition, just as the partitions for Ubuntu will be? Will this be bad sometime? If yes, other better solutions? What are the good utilities to accomplish the partition tasks? Can Ubuntu installer solely handle them? Or better to have some of the jobs done in Windows with some recommended softwares? • How can i compare Audio, what programming language should i use

  I have 2 audio files that are from almost the same source. But at some points there shifted a bit. Also the codecs does not match. I would like to make a program that takes a sample 2 - 4 seconds. And looks for it in the other file. (Most of the time it's not shifted more than 30 seconds). Than take the time and store it, Go ahead for a few seconds take a sample and find it again. This way i want to create a file where i can see on what points the file is shifted. For people who are more interested in what i want. I have a audio/video file speech and subtitles. But i have same speech from different sources with differs a bit in time. And i like to make a program that can correct the subtitle time for me. Enough about the problem I looked on the Internet for ways to compare audio files. Based on what i read comparing 2 audio files isn't that easy as i had hoped. • Can't Log Into Ubuntu 12.04

  Yesterday, after turning on Ubuntu, I logged into a Gnome session. A few minutes later, I tried switching to Unity for a change. Unfortunately, the background and my desktop icons loaded, but the system bar and launcher failed to load even after several minutes. Unity had always worked fine for me. I then tried the guest account, and it worked fine on both Unity and Gnome. However, the problem with my account got worse; I couldn't log into any desktop at all anymore. I would type in my password and press enter and it would just sit there doing nothing. The computer no longer responded in any way, so I had to hold the power button and reboot. The same problem happened repeatedly. Earlier today, I tried to get on again. I found that I hadthe same problem, when I tried to log in, the computer no longer locked up, but instead flashed a black screen with theconsole output and what seemed to be an error message before returning to the log in screen. It was to quick for me to read, about 1/4-1/2 second. I'd really appreciate some help as I have some important files that are not backed up yet. I can't transfer the files to a new account, or even make a new account because I tried taking the password off my account so now I can't authenticate from the guest to perform root functions. • Eclipse will not install Android Support Package [migrated]

  I am an experienced programmer but new to Android, hence using Eclipse for the first time. Unfortunately I cannot get my first project off the ground. I get as far trying to create the project when the following sequence happens. A screen arrives titled 'Install Dependencies' telling me that the required version is 8 and the installed version is 'Not installed' I click on the Install/Upgrade button and something must happen because Android SDK Manager pops up and I get a whole series of 'Fetching:' messages. The next screen asks me to Choose Package to Install and the only option is Android Support Library, revision 10. This doesn't bother me as I presume 10 is better than 8 so I hit the Install button. This is where it all goes wrong as I get a red message saying: File not found: C:\Program Files (X86)\Android\android-sdk\temp\support_r10.zip (Access is denied). Sure enough, when I check this folder, it is empty. Now, something must have happened as as SDK Manager did a whole lot of fetching and must have put these files somewhere. I am quite happy to find them and put them in the correct folder but the question is what is the name of the files that I am looking for?

• How to fix GRUB on dualboot with Windows7 and Ubuntu?

  I am a relatively recent user of Linux. I had several releases of Ubuntu installed on my laptop working in dual-boot and never had any issues. Recently, I installed openSUSE because I thought it would be necessary for an assignment at my university. It turns out it wasn't so I returned to Ubuntu and decided to burn the new .iso to a CD and install it. The problem is that during installation process I almost for sure messed up with the partitions and now, whenever I tried to load Windows 7, it will tells me that a required device is inaccessible. So, I reinstalled Ubuntu again and now all I get is that I am redirected to the GRUB menu without any warnings. I tried creating a Windows Recovery Disk but it gives me Unexpected I/O error. I suspect it is because it was downloaded from the Internet and maybe some files weren't there. I tried everything without success, so I decided to ask here, in the hope I can receive some help and also learn how to help others with it in the future. • how to recover lost partitions data

  I have a 2TB SATA drive that was being used as file storage on my UBUNTU computer. I was re-imaging my windows box so I used that drive to back up some files to it. I did this by taking the drive from my windows PC and putting it in my UBUNTU PC, mounted it and copied the files over. After the windows refresh I thought it would be easier to take the 2 TB drive and dock it in the external dock my Windows case has built in. Anyway it would recognize in BIOS but windows would not see it (because it was EXT3 or EXT4) so when I went into the disk manager it advised me the drive needed to be initialized. Me not thinking I initialized it as a GUID Partition table. Now it sees it as a blank drive, even in UBUNTU. I have done nothing else to write or change the drive. I was wondering if there is a qay to repair the old partitioning and get access to my files back? many thanks! EDIT: I followed the instructions in the link @kniwor sent me. • Can't boot to Windows 7 after installing Ubuntu 11.10

  Here's what happened: I have 2 HDDs. 1st HDD is partitioned like this: C - Windows 7 D* - Empty drive where I installed Ubuntu E - Personal Files F - Personal Files 2nd HDD is partitioned like this: G - Personal Files *the D partition is originally part of the C partition. I resized it (using Easus Partition Master in Windows) and defragged it prior to installing Ubuntu. I installed Ubuntu by booting to the Ubuntu Secure Remix CD, and chose the D partition to install Ubuntu. I did not create a swap drive, and I mounted the / to the D partition. I didnt know where to mount the others, so I just thought by mounting the / to D, it would be okay. After the long installation, upon rebooting, I can't access Windows AND Ubuntu. I get an infinite bootloop and eventually the choices to boot to Safe Modes, Last Known Good Configuration and Start Windows normally. After failing in all of them, I placed the CD back and ran the Boot Repair. I chose the MBR 1st, it didn't work. I then chose the GRUB 2nd and now I was able to boot to the Ubuntu I installed, but not to my Windows 7! I'm using my newly installed Ubuntu while writing this. I hope you can help me. • CentOS drive mapping? [on hold]

  This is the first time I am posting on this particular StackExchange forum and I hope that I am using the right one for the present question. Briefly, this is what I need to do I am running a web service where users can, amongst other things, upload and store files on the server. What I want to do is to hive off user file storage to a different location so my server (CentOS 64 bit) can concentrate on what it does best - server side scripting and database management. As things stand all user files go into subdirectories in a folder called stash that lies above DOC_ROOT. What I would like to do is Transparently detect all attempts to read/write to stash/sub_folder and get/set file data on a remote server - ideally the latter would be one which replicates files like a CDN so they can be delivered from the closest/fastest location based on where the user's location. Even nicer would be if for all read accesses I could provide a URL that allows the user's browser to fetch the relevant file directly without having to funnel them via my server. I am a relative newbie when it comes to this sort of thing so I hope that I have phrased this question adequately well. From the little searching I done I gathered that WebDAV can be used to map drives to a different location on the web so perhaps that is a starting point. But if that will work I need to Establish how to get WebDAV up and running on my CentOS 64 bit server. Ideally, identify a service that allows this kind of file storage and provides an API I can use in my own scripting. I'd much appreciate any help with this.

• Installing 11.10 on flash drive failed

  This is my problem. I burned Ubuntu 11.10 iso to a CD. I was able to boot my PC with it. I plugged in my flash drive, and inserted the CD and restarted the computer to boot Ubuntu. I then chose to install Ubuntu alongside with Windows (XP prof.). Then I was able to select my flash drive as the installation location. I prepared partitons by dragging a bar and allocating the size for the Ubuntu installation, and for other files. I set 3GB for ubuntu and 1GB for other files. The pen drive was partitioned and files installed on it. After sucess I ejected the CD to restart the PC to use the new OS. When it restarted I expected to be asked to select an OS to boot. But I could only boot with Windows XP. Properties of my flash drive show its total capacity is 1GB. The partitioned 3GB is missing. How can I boot with the USB stick? How can I get my 4GB USB stick back?

  This question is regarding using STSADM command to create new site collection in Active Directory Account creation mode. My setup is like this- I have 2 virtual PCs in a Windows XP Pro SP3 host. Both VPCs are Windows Server 2003 R2. One VPC acts as the DC, DNS Server, DHCP server, has Active Directory installed and is also the Database Server. The other VPC is the domain member and it is the IIS web server, POP/SMTP server and it has WSS 3.0 installed. I created a new site using the GUI in Central Admin page. For creating a site collection under the newly created site, I needed to use the STSADM command line tool since it cannot be done from Central Admin page in Active Directory Account creation mode.   Hi all, I've "setup-a-msysgit-server-with-copssh-on-windows", following Tim Davis' guide and I was now learning how to use the git commands, following Jason Meridth's guide, and I have managed to get everything working fine, but now I can't pass the push command. I have set the server and the client on the same machine (for now), win7-x64.   Follow-up to post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2978096/using-width-precision-specifiers-with-boostformat I'm trying to use boost::function to create a function that uses lambdas to format a string with boost::format. Ultimately what I'm trying to achieve is using width & precision specifiers for strings with format. boost::format does not support the use of the * width & precision specifiers, as indicated in the docs: Width or precision set to asterisk (*) are used by printf to read this field from an argument. e.g. printf("%1$d:%2$.*3$d:%4$.*3$d\n", hour, min, precision, sec); This class does not support this mechanism for now. so such precision or width fields are quietly ignored by the parsing. so I'm trying to find other ways to accomplish the same goal.   It seems like whenever I try to add a UL inside of the containers when using jQuery UI - Tabs, it breaks the javascript. Is there a way I can use a UL inside of these containers that I am missing?
