• How to know when a user console is locked or has logged "back into" windows

  This is in regards to applications that run in the taskbar but should be applicable to standard apps, Winforms, WPF, etc. Question: I am after some method (preferably via managed code) to be notified when a user either has their screen "locked" while my app is running and/or know when they log back in. GMail Notifier does this sort of thing for example, if my PC is locked for a while when I log in again it shows a list of emails that arrived since locking the PC. I'm looking to replicate that kind of functionality. Does anyone have any ideas on how to accomplish this?

• How can I convert my Stream (image data) back into a file

  I have a WCF restful service that I'm trying to upload an image to. I have a very basic metod that accepts a stream as it's only parameter and is defined in the contract as: [OperationContract] [WebInvoke(UriTemplate = "ReviewImage", BodyStyle = WebMessageBodyStyle.Bare, Method = "POST")] ReviewImage UploadImage(Stream data); I'm actually consuming this service from flash (which is fairly inconsequntial) which selects a file from the file system and uploads it through the service url. It all works seems to work, adding a breakpoint to the UploadImage method breaks as expected. If I wanted to save this file back to disk, is it just a case of reading this Stream object into a FileStream object that creates the file somewhere? A bit like the this? When i do actually do this the file can not be opened as an image. I'm sure i'm missing a key piece of knowledge here. Does my stream actually contain just the image bytes or does it contain more than that?

  How do i roll back changes to an attached object in nhibernate? We have a validation before update/save (example simplified).. var setting = Get("key") setting.Value = "helo" //for whatever reason, this particular //setting cannot have its value saved to the database ... Verify(setting); //throws base.Update(setting); but since the object is attached, any changes already happened in the session, even if the validation throws, and never reaches Update. What is the proper way to handle this?

• Unable to regress web application from AJAX Control Toolkit 3.0 back to 1.0

  I was recently asked to stop using the Ajax Control Toolkit 3.0 in my application and need to go back to 1.0. Luckily I only have one calendar control which I don't believe will be affected by this. I have removed the reference to the 3.0 .dll and added a reference to the 1.0 .dll.   When you use variables (is that the correct word?) in python regular expressions like this: "blah (?P\w+)" ("value" would be the variable), how could you make the variable's value be the text after "blah " to the end of the line or to a certain character not paying any attention to the actual content of the variable. • Uploadify - Passing Information Back to The Original Form

  I have an Send.aspx page that has an uploadify control on it. Upload.ashx handles the file upload. I am adding a file record to a sql database in the Upload.ashx file and I need to get the ID of that record back from Upload.aspx when it is done. Can't get it working with Sessions. =( Something to do with an Adobe bug? What would the best way to handle this be?   This is using the web app framework, not Django. The following template code is giving me an TemplateSyntaxError: 'for' statements with five words should end in 'reversed' error when I try to render a dictionary. I don't understand what's causing this error. • OleDb database to DataSet and back in c#?

  I'm writing a program that lets a user: Connect to an (arbitrary) View all of the tables in that database in separate DataGridViews Edit them in the program, generate random data, and see the results Choose to commit those changes or revert So I discovered the DataSet class, which looks like it's capable of holding everything that a database would, and I decided that the best thing to do here would be to load everything into one dataset, let the user edit it, and then save the dataset back to the database. The problem is that the only way I can find to load the database tables is this: set = new DataSet(); DataTable schema = connection.GetOleDbSchemaTable( OleDbSchemaGuid.Tables, new string[] { null, null, null, "TABLE" }); foreach (DataRow row in schema.Rows) { string tableName = row.Field<string>("TABLE_NAME"); DataTable dTable = new DataTable(); new OleDbDataAdapter("SELECT * FROM " + tableName, connection).Fill(dTable); dTable.TableName = tableName; set.Tables.Add(dTable); } while it seems like there should be a simpler way given that datasets appear to be designed for exactly this purpose. The real problem though is when I try saving these things. In order to use the OleDbDataAdapter.Update() method, I'm told that I have to provide valid INSERT queries. Doesn't that kind of negate the whole point of having a class to handle this stuff for me? Anyway, I'm hoping somebody can either explain how to load and save a database into a dataset or maybe give me a better idea of how to do what I'm trying to do. I could always parse the commands together myself, but that doesn't seem like the best solution.

• Give back full control to a user on a disk from another computer

  I have my friend's hard drive mounted externally. After messing with the permissions with TAKEOWN so I could fix some viruses, I have full control over their drive. The problem is, now it's stuck in a "autochk not found" reboot sequence. I think the problem is that the boot sector is invisible to the drive now. So my question is, How can I use icacls to give back the full ownership, when the user I am giving it to is not on my machine? I ran the TAKEOWN command from my windows 7 laptop, their machine is a windows xp Professional with three partitions, I only altered the one that has the boot sector. • Writing String to Stream and reading it back does not work

  I want to write a String to a Stream (a MemoryStream in this case) and read the bytes one by one. stringAsStream = new MemoryStream(); UnicodeEncoding uniEncoding = new UnicodeEncoding(); String message = "Message"; stringAsStream.Write(uniEncoding.GetBytes(message), 0, message.Length); Console.WriteLine("This:\t\t" + (char)uniEncoding.GetBytes(message)[0]); Console.WriteLine("Differs from:\t" + (char)stringAsStream.ReadByte()); The (undesired) result I get is: This: M Differs from: ? It looks like it's not being read correctly, as the first char of "Message" is 'M', which works when getting the bytes from the UnicodeEncoding instance but not when reading them back from the stream. What am I doing wrong? The bigger picture: I have an algorithm which will work on the bytes of a Stream, I'd like to be as general as possible and work with any Stream. I'd like to convert an ASCII-String into a MemoryStream, or maybe use another method to be able to work on the String as a Stream. The algorithm in question will work on the bytes of the Stream.

• begin...end VS braces {...} VS indentation grouping

  Hi, everyone. I don't want to fuel any holy-wars here, but I need to ask your opinion. Right now I'm in process of designing a Hardware Description Language as a project in my university. I decided to take VHDL language and just add some syntax-sugar 'coz VHDL is rather obese in syntax. I decided to use indentation to group blocks of code (like in Python), and I'm strongly criticized for that. Originally Begin...End; grouping is used in VHDL language. I have no clue what are cons and pros of these 3 types of grouping, the only thing I know is that I like Python style and I don't understand if it's usage could be erroneous or something? What do you think? What do you like? (hope that I can get some feedback from people who extensively used different languages with different code-grouping syntax, like Pasca, Ada, Delphi, C, C++, C#, Java, Python)

• highlighting words at the end of a word

  i'm not sure how i could have phrased the title better, but my issue is that the highlight function doesn't highlight the search keywords which are at the end of the word. for example, if the search keyword is 'self', it will highlight 'self' or 'self-lessness' or 'Self' [with capital S] but it will not highlight the self of 'yourself' or 'himself' etc. . this is my highlight function: function highlightWords($text, $words) { preg_match_all('~\w+~', $words, $m); if(!$m) return $text; $re = '~\\b(' . implode('|', $m[0]) .   Hello, I need (free or cheap) source for end of day stock/mutual funds/index values. Major world indexes & European stocks are primary intrest. I keep seeing that yahoo/ google/ MS offer this data, yet I cant find HOWTO doc (or similar) on getting the data. Reuters is an option - ~$300/month puts it out of my range. Sample of what I am looking for: WMX.IDX,20100326,54.49,54.6,54.17,54.41,0 XAH.IDX,20100326,52.39,52.77,52.33,52.54,0 XAL.IDX,20100326,37.34,38.4,37.34,37.59,0 XAO.IDX,20100326,4896.2998,4905.2002,4848.2998,4905.2002,0 I wish to get this data into txt file in an automated manner. • Append a string to the end of an element attribute using jQuery

  I have an element: <select id="row" /> I want to append a string to the end of the id attribute, like this: <select id="row_1" /> The jQuery I am using to achieve this is (from within an each): $(this).attr('id',$(this).attr('id')+'_'+row_count); This looks ugly as sin, and whilst it works I want to know if there is a simpler solution. In this example, the ID prefix (e.g. row) is never constant, so I can't just do 'row_'+row_count. Cheers!

• Pass Result of ASIHTTPRequest "requestFinished" Back to Originating Method

  I have a method (getAllTeams:) that initiates an HTTP request using the ASIHTTPRequest library. NSURL *httpURL = [[[NSURL alloc] initWithString:@"/api/teams" relativeToURL:webServiceURL] autorelease]; ASIHTTPRequest *request = [[[ASIHTTPRequest alloc] initWithURL:httpURL] autorelease]; [request setDelegate:self]; [request startAsynchronous]; What I'd like to be able to do is call [WebService getAllTeams] and have it return the results in an NSArray. At the moment, getAllTeams doesn't return anything because the HTTP response is evaluated in the requestFinished: method. Ideally I'd want to be able to call [WebService getAllTeams], wait for the response, and dump it into an NSArray. I don't want to create properties because this is disposable class (meaning it doesn't store any values, just retrieves values), and multiple methods are going to be using the same requestFinished (all of them returning an array). I've read up a bit on delegates, and NSNotifications, but I'm not sure if either of them are the best approach. I found this snippet about implementing callbacks by passing a selector as a parameter, but it didn't pan out (since requestFinished fires independently). Any suggestions? I'd appreciate even just to be pointed in the right direction. NSArray *teams = [[WebService alloc] getAllTeams]; (currently doesn't work, because getAllTeams doesn't return anything, but requestFinished does. I want to get the result of requestFinished and pass it back to getAllTeams:)

• Git fatal: remote end hung up

  So I thought I had finally got everything setup on Windows ... then ran into this issue. Current setup URL: ssh://user@host:port/myapp.git Already run Putty - and can connect using valid .ppk keys through the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys direct. In Git and TortoiseGIT - I set both to use "plink.exe". Putty works fine - no issues - but when I run that URL into bash I get for a git clone (url) fatal: the remote end hung up expectedly In a cygwin bash terminal - running "ssh user@host" - works no probs at all. Anyone suggest anything?

• Multi-Threading - Cleanup strategy at program end

  What is the best way to finish a multi-threaded application in a clean way? I am starting several socket connections from the main thread in seperate sockets and wait until the end of my business day in the main thread and use currently System.Environment.Exit(0) to terminate it. This leads to an unhandled execption in one of the childs. Should I stop the threads from the list? I have been reluctant to implement any real stopping in the childs yet, thus I am wondering about the best practice. The sockets are all wrapped nicely with proper destructors for logging out and closing, but it still leads to errors.

• Help needed with Javascript Variable Scope / OOP and Call Back Functions

  I think this issue goes beyond typical variable scope and closure stuff, or maybe I'm an idiot. Here goes anyway... I'm creating a bunch of objects on the fly in a jQuery plugin. The object look something like this function WedgePath(canvas){ this.targetCanvas = canvas; this.label; this.logLabel = function(){ console.log(this.label) } } the jQuery plugin looks something like this (function($) { $.fn.myPlugin = function() { return $(this).each(function() { // Create Wedge Objects for(var i = 1; i <= 30; i++){ var newWedge = new WedgePath(canvas); newWedge.label = "my_wedge_"+i; globalFunction(i, newWedge]); } }); } })(jQuery); So... the plugin creates a bunch of wedgeObjects, then calls 'globalFunction' for each one, passing in the latest WedgePath instance. Global function looks like this. function globalFunction(indicator_id, pWedge){ var targetWedge = pWedge; targetWedge.logLabel(); } What happens next is that the console logs each wedges label correctly. However, I need a bit more complexity inside globalFunction. So it actually looks like this... function globalFunction(indicator_id, pWedge){ var targetWedge = pWedge; someSql = "SELECT * FROM myTable WHERE id = ?"; dbInterface.executeSql(someSql, [indicator_id], function(transaction, result){ targetWedge.logLabel(); }) } There's a lot going on here so i'll explain. I'm using client side database storage (WebSQL i call it). 'dbInterface' an instance of a simple javascript object I created which handles the basics of interacting with a client side database [shown at the end of this question]. the executeSql method takes up to 4 arguments The SQL String an optional arguments array an optional onSuccess handler an optional onError handler (not used in this example) What I need to happen is: When the WebSQL query has completed, it takes some of that data and manipulates some attribute of a particular wedge. But, when I call 'logLabel' on an instance of WedgePath inside the onSuccess handler, I get the label of the very last instance of WedgePath that was created way back in the plugin code. Now I suspect that the problem lies in the var newWedge = new WedgePath(canvas); line. So I tried pushing each newWedge into an array, which I thought would prevent that line from replacing or overwriting the WedgePath instance at every iteration... wedgeArray = []; // Inside the plugin... for(var i = 1; i <= 30; i++){ var newWedge = new WedgePath(canvas); newWedge.label = "my_wedge_"+i; wedgeArray.push(newWedge); } for(var i = 0; i < wedgeArray.length; i++){ wedgeArray[i].logLabel() } But again, I get the last instance of WedgePath to be created. This is driving me nuts. I apologise for the length of the question but I wanted to be as clear as possible. • Using Java server-side with PHP-generated front-end

  Hi!  Does anyone have a real-world experience in building such a project? I'd like to move away questions about "is it good idea or not", but focus on possible solutions. I see one simple way - HTTP GET/POST + xml/json - and one more elegant - AJAX/DWR. As for the first one - I understand that it is possible, but needs quite a lot coding. As for second way - is it possible to use Java DWR engine with PHP front-end? Is DWR language-independent for client side (as it uses just JavaScript)?  Would it be a problem, that client page was generated by one web server (for example, apache+php) and served on server-side by another (for example, tomcat)? I suspect, that Tomcat will complain about sessions. Can this problem be fixed with allowing cross-domain AJAX? Thank you in advance. Denis.

• Dumping an ADODB recordset to XML, then back to a recordset, then saving to the db

  I've created an XML file using the .Save() method of an ADODB recordset in the following manner. dim res dim objXML: Set objXML = Server.CreateObject("MSXML2.DOMDocument") 'This returns an ADODB recordset set res = ExecuteReader("SELECT * from some_table) With res Call .Save(objXML, 1) Call .Close() End With Set res = nothing Let's assume that the XML generated above then gets saved to a file. I'm able to read the XML back into a recordset like this: dim res : set res = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.recordset") res.open server.mappath("/admin/tbl_some_table.xml") And I can loop over the records without any problem. However what I really want to do is save all of the data in res to a table in a completely different database. We can assume that some_table already exists in this other database and has the exact same structure as the table I originally queried to make the XML. • pass object from JS to PHP and back

  This is something that I don't think can't be done, or can't be done easy. Think of this, You have an button inside a div in HTML, when you click it, you call a php function via AJAX, I would like to send the element that start the click event(or any element as a parameter) to PHP and BACK to JS again, in a way like serialize() in PHP, to be able to restore the element in JS. Let me give you a simple example: PHP: function ajaxCall(element){ return element; } JS: callbackFunction(el){ el.color='red'; } HTML: <div id="id_div"> <input type="button" value="click Me" onClick="ajaxCall(this, callbackFunction);" /> </div> So I thing at 3 methods method 1. I can give each element in the page an ID. so the call to Ajax would look like this: ajaxCall(this.id, callbackFunction); and the callback function would be: document.getElementById(el).color='red'; This method I think is hard, beacause in a big page is hard to keep track of all ID's. method 2. I think that using xPath could be done, If i can get the exact path of an element, and in the callback function evaluate that path to reach the element. This method needs some googling, it is just an ideea. method 3. Modify my AJAX functions, so it retain the element that started the event, and pass it to the callback function as argument when something returns from PHP, so in my AJAX would look like this: eval(callbackFunction(argumentsFromPhp, element)); and the callback function would be: callbackFunction(someArgsFromPhp, el){ el.color='red'; // parse someArgsFromPhp } I think that the third option is my choise to start this experiment. Any of you has a better idea how I can accomplish this ? Thank you.
