  How does one troubleshoot a site that loads sometimes, but then requires a reload at other times... sometimes it loads, sometimes it hangs and a refresh is required, sometimes more than once. What would you do in this situation? I'm just looking for basic troubleshooting steps to start me going in the right direction. In the meantime I'll be poking around in Chrome's "Inspect Element" but if there's specific things I should look at first let me know.

• Can a website see/know my MAC address even if I use a VPN?

  I have searched other results and read many of them but I could not get an enough information. My question is that can a website see my MAC address or can they have an information about that I'm the same person under these conditions: I am using a VPN and I use two IPs: first one is normal one, the second one is the VPN's IP. I use two browsers to hide behind browser fingerprinting. I use both browsers with Incognito Mode. I always use one for normal IP, one for the VPN IP. I do not know that if the website uses cookies or not. But can they collect an enough information to prove that these two identities belong to same person? Is there any other way for them to see that I am the same person? I use different IPs, different browsers and I use both browsers in incognito mode. I even changed one of browsers language to only English. So even if they collect my info from browser, they will see two browsers using different languages. (Addition after edit): So I have changed my IP and browser information and the website can not reach this information anymore to prove that I am the same person using two accounts. Then let's come to the title: Can they see my MAC address? Because I think that it is the last way that they can identify me and my main question is that. I wrote the information above to mention that I changed IPs and I have some precautions to avoid browser fingerprinting (btw my VPN provider already has a service about blocking it). I wrote them because I read similar advices in some related questions but my question is that can they see my MAC address (or anything else that can make me detected) despite all these precautions. And lastly, Is there an extra way to be anonymized that I can do? For example, can my system clock or anything else give an information? Thanks in advance.

• can I override/redefine "global" Javascript functions, like confirm() and alert()?

  I want to do some browser automation, and those pesky confirm/alert boxes are a real pain. Disabling javascript completely in this case is not an option, unfortunately. Well, so I was wondering, can I just change the definition of those methods as seen by my browser's javascript interpreter to basically do nothing and return true? Note that I do know about redefining them in the Javascript code directly, e.g. putting in function alert(message) { return true; } but AFAIK this is not a viable approach for this situation because when doing browser automation I have to work with other people's Javascript. Moreover, my program actually begins manipulating these websites already after the page has fully loaded into the browser, so I cannot just first automatically rewrite the javascript and then load the page. Well, so I was wondering if I could instead just "permanently" modify the way alert/confirm are implemented and executed in my browser. Sort of like the equivalent of dll injection and so forth in the realm of windows apps.

  I am experiencing a strange behaviour of my application in Chrome browser (No problem with other browsers). When I refresh a page, the cookie is being sent properly, but intermittently the browser doesn't seem to pass the cookie on some refreshes. • Making firefox refresh images faster

  I have a thing I'm doing where I need a webpage to stream a series of images from the local client computer. We want for the signature to show up in the web page and for them to see themselves signing it within the web page(the pad does not have an LCD to show it to them right there). So I setup a simple local HTTP server which grabs an image of what the current state of the signature pad looks like and it gets sent to the browser. This has no problems in any browser(tested in IE7, 8, and Chrome) but Firefox where it is extremely laggy and jumpy and doesn't keep with the 10 FPS rate. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? I've tried creating very simple double buffering in javascript but that just made things worse. Also for a bit more information it seems that Firefox is executing the javascript at the correct framerate as on the server the requests are coming in at a constant speed. But the images are only refreshed inconsistently ranging from 5 times per second all the way down to 0 times per second(taking 2 seconds to do a refresh) Also I have tried using different image formats all with the same results. The formats I've tried include bitmaps, PNGs, and GIFs (GIFs caused a minor problem in Chrome with flicker though) Could it be possible that Firefox is somehow caching my images causing a slight lag?   They have asks to turn off caching on our browsers. I was aghast that they would ask such a thing. I said to them; To avoid caching it is best practice to use; <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache" /> This should work across all browsers. Their reply was; We need to refresh javascript at runtime, this will not help us – any more ideas? I replied; Unsure what you mean by “refresh javascript at runtime”. If you are using ajax, browser caching can effect the XMLHttpRequest open method. Adding these meta tags to the source has fixed this for me in the past. Browser caching only caches resources, it should have no effect on site scripting. These meta tags will bypass browser caching. This is a reasonable request, isn't it?

• Desktop appliciations are unable to launch my browser in Windows 8 [migrated]

  I have a fresh copy of Windows 8 Pro installed from MSDN. I have Google Chrome installed (stable channel) and it is set as my default browser. I even went into Control Panel Default Programs to ensure that Chrome had all its defaults. When other desktop applications try to launch my browser they always fail. For example, while trying to install the Android SDK for Windows the installer accurately detected that I did not have the JDK installed. It provides a friendly button to visit java.oracle.com. When pressing this button, nothing happens at all. You can see that here: http://youtu.be/XXL8GhuWWg0 If it were only that application that was having issues I wouldn't think anything of it but I have been encountering similar issues all over the place. Probably the most irritating one is when visual studio has updates; clicking the update button does nothing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zwd1mn3TId0 You can see in that screencast that Visual Studio is not able to launch the browser no matter what I click. The update button doesn't do anything and neither do the two links in the update's description. Any suggestions? I'm assuming it's a Windows issue since it is happening in multiple applications.

• Java in a browser on Ubuntu

  So I am running an old version of Ubuntu and all of a sudden, my capabilities to run Java in a browser have stopped and it no longer executes properly. Someone else set this up for me, but I believe it's running icedtea plugin 6 and jre 6. What would be the best ways to troubleshoot this? I suppose I could try downloading icedtea 7 and jre 7 (sun or openjdK) and see if that works? Also, in general, is installing icedtea, installing a java runtime environment, and then symlinking something to the plugins directory of your browser the best way to get Java working on most Linux systems? Unfortunately, there are many guides all over the internet offering totally different solutions, but this is probably the most common I've seen (not sure how well it works). My main use is downloading an executing .jnlp files (browsers should open it automatically). Although, I've seen people using "javasw" to run the file outside of a browser. Is this something I could consider doing? I can't seem to find javasw packaged for my version of Ubuntu.

• Google chrome asking for username and password for OWA

  Hi, i have a question about the google chrome browser. When i navigate to my work's Outlook Web Access site to read my emails, the chrome browser is prompting me for a username and password to the server saying "Authentication Required - the server XXXXXX.XXX:443 requires a username and password. After i put them in i then have to enter in the normal OWA username and password to access my emails as per normal. The funny thing is.. 1] If i click CANCEL on the first dialog it takes me to the OWA screen and i can log in normal anyway. However - subqeuent page clicks will keep prompting me each time for the server credentials. 2] I am NOT prompted for server UN and PW if i use IE or fireFox. Does anyone know how to stop chrome from asking me each time? or is it a server setting - i do know that a friend who uses the same browser (chrome) and also OWA does not have the same problem (NB: they work at a different company) Thanks!

• 59 vs 60 hertz on external display via DisplayPort

  Don't know if this is a really specific question or you'll help me out. Please do. I just bought a DeLock DisplayPort cable for my Lenovo T500. Tried to use it with the in-built Intel MHD4500, no use. With the ATI HD3650 (you can switch between the two vga on this machine) I get a normal picture, but only on 59hz. On 60 I get a smaller desktop size (strange). Any idea what can cause this? Will I have any problem if I use the 59hz? (Was using the display with a VGA cable but I get a blurry picture with that (dont matter what device I attach, VGA is like this on this display) and thats why I wanted to change.)

• Can I fix memory leaks in browsers? (Win7 64bit IE9 Chrome)

  I have a habit of opening websites in their own window, then getting interested in something else in another window while leaving the first window open with the intention of returning to finishing reading. Sometimes I'll leave browser windows open for quite a while. When I do, the browser locks-up gigs of memory until it uses so much, IE will no longer respond. I've seen one browser window use up over 2 gigs just sitting there doing nothing. Chrome appears to do it too, but it doesn't use nearly as much as IE. Is there a way to stop this? Any ideas what may be causing it? Is it a problem with the OS or the browsers? Any insight is appreciated.

• Latitude E6410 - Screen flickering on Windows 8

  On Windows 8, my Latitude E6410 screen (1440x900 - 60Hz - NVidia NVS3100M) is flickering. If I turn off the laptop for 30 minutes and turn it back on, there's no flickering but it eventually start again after 10-15 minutes. The flickering seems more present at the top and bottom of the screen. I already updated the graphic card drivers, bios, etc. Nothing seems to fix the issue. To prove that it isn't a hardware issue, when I reinstalled Windows 7 I couldn't reproduce the issue. Any idea what could cause this?

• Can I disable certificate error/warning in Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer?

  Exactly as the title says; I don't mind which browser, I just want to type "https://........" and see the page normally without any certificate error, knowing that I might risk myself by allowing an invalid certificate! It seems like every browser producer thinks he knows better than me, the Super User !! =) Now, does anyone know how to remove warning/error related to this? In any of these browsers (Firefox/Chrome/Internet Explorer/[you-may-suggest])? Oh, and don't advise me a workaround like adding to exceptions. Please don't mention that. I'd highly appriciate a concise & precise answer! Edit: The answer I seek concerns ONLY the browser. No third-party objects to be used.
