• Why does Evolution give me multiple reminders for the same event?

  I have a bunch of calendars on my Google Calendar account (school & work, personal, etc.), so I have Evolution subscribed to each one of those calendars. When I get a notification for an upcoming (recurring) event, I actually get many notifications for the same event, all at the same time. For example, just now I got 21 notifications for one event. I am using Gnome Shell, where the message tray displays event notifications in its own way. I get the same behaviour on my other computer, also running Ubuntu 11.10 with Gnome Shell. (And it has happened running Unity where Evolution only shows its dialog window with event reminders, but I'm not sure if it has happened quite as intensely). Does someone know why this is happening, and maybe how to fix it? It would be cool to get slightly less panic-inducing event reminders :)

• How do I add a boot from cd option to yaboot?

  So I'm dual-booting Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my iMac G5 powepc alongside Mac OS X and I want to add a boot cd option to yaboot because I'm trying to boot a scratched Mac OS X installation DVD that takes a while to read and the frst bootstrap moves on too fast. How do I edit the timeout for the first bootstrap anyways? So, my main question is, how do I add a cd booting option to yaboot and then, how doI boot it? The devalias from OpenFrmware tells me that 1 have 2 cd-rom instaled, on is /ht/pci@3/ata-6/disk@0 and the other on ends with a 1 instead of a zero. These are the contents of my yaboot.conf file: yaboot.conf generated by the Ubuntu installer run: "man yaboot.conf" for details. Do not make changes until you have!! see also: /usr/share/doc/yaboot/examples for example configurations.   From the moment I got to the airport in Amsterdam, I've been bumping into JavaOne pilgrims today. Finally got to my hotel, after a pretty good flight (and KLM provides great meals, which helps a lot), and a rather long wait at customs (serves me right for getting seat 66C in a plane with 68 rows). And, best of all, on Twitter I've been seeing a few remarks around the Duke's Choice Awards for this year. The references all point to the September - October issue of the Java Magazine, where page 24 shows the following: So, from page 24 onwards, you can read all about the above applications. What's especially cool is that three of the above are applications created on top of the NetBeans Platform! That's AgroSense (farm management software), MICE (NATO system for defense and battle-space operations), and Level One Registration Tool (UN Refugee Agency sofware for managing refugees). Congratulations to all the winners, looking forward to learning more about them all during the coming days here at the conference.

• Help my graphists sharing their work

  As a developer I'm used to Subversion for source control and I think it's great for sharing source code between developers. Now thinking about my graphists and game designers, they need to have a slightly different approach I think. They need to share binary files They need to be able to have a thumbnail and preview of their work I don't want to include their binaries into my game repository (would be much too heavy for developer when updating) I've seen that some graphists uses personally created website to share their work but I was wondering if some "standard" application existed in order to provide my graphists a cool way of working together. Is there a common way of dealing with this? Is the way I want to do (only final sprites on my game repo) correct? How do you guys do this as game developers?

• Can I recreate main user account and delete old?

  Something happen with performance of super user account. When I tried to load home folder it has really looooong booting duration. If compare to earlier time. And I couldn't figure out why this happen and what is wrong. It has been started after I copied a lot of contents from external usb disk. But if I go through other user account all work perfect, without this trouble, fast and cool. I want to create new user account copy all necessary content to this account and delete old account. Can I recreate main user account and delete old??

• How do I listen to my microphone through my speakers in Windows 7?

  I've looked about and before you say it: I've used the "Listen to this device" feature built into Windows. The issue is that it is a USB microphone and there is a second delay before when it plays on the speakers, literally making me go quiet because my brain doesn't work too well hearing myself a second after I say something. I use Realtek Audio, so it works differently from the monopolistic Creative sound cards. There is no "What U Hear" or "Line In" levels. It's just "Speakers" and "Microphone". Is there a software I can use that will not have delay? I want to wear nice headphones and still hear myself

• ubuntu 9.10 on an external usb drive: grub1 does not work

  I have installed Ubuntu on a partition of my external usb drive. Since I had problems with grub2, I have uninstalled it and installed grub1. But then the usb drive didn't boot anymore, and I am forced to the limited shell of grub1. If I write manually kernel (hd0,4)/vmlinuz-2.6.31-15-generic root=/dev/sdb4 ro quiet splash initrd (hd0,4)/boot/initrd.img-2.6.31-15-generic boot then Ubuntu is loaded, but if I execute the commands root (hd0,4) setup (hd0) as explained at http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/manual/html_node/Installing-GRUB-natively.html#Installing-GRUB-natively, next time I boot from usb I am forced again to the grub limited shell. How can I restore a working grub?

• How do i add a start menu page to my java game?

  I have a rather cool space invaders game that my friend and I have been working on for a while, and we have decided it needs an opening page, with "Start" options, "Quit" options and so forth. I have looked at several methods online, but cant seem to get any of them to work! Does anybody have any ideas? P.S Using JFrame to draw the main frame Im just looking to do this within Java, so just a panel that appears at a state change (GAME, MENU). Id like it to contain a few buttons to start the game, and quit. Later, I will add achievements, but im after something really basic for now. But thanks for the suggestions!

• Automatically delete files after they expire

  I've got this idea for some time and I was wondering if anyone has seen such a feature/app in any operating system and if you haven't, what do you think about it. Where do you think I should begin? The idea is simple. I think we all have those files that are made and probably used for a few days and then are left on our disk and we never delete them or even check to see if we need them again. It'd be cool if you could right click on a file and click on "Expire in.. 3 days" for example. And the file gets deleted after 3 days. I have a great need for this and maybe some people will find it useful. I was thinking of writing a script and use the Nautilus Action project in GNOME for a start.

  Is it possible to use Puppet on Windows where UAC is enabled? Does Puppet have any method for automatically saying yes to UAC prompts for a software install? My module does the following workflow: Downloads an MSI file locally from the Puppetmaster Creates a local batch file using template function which does cmd.exe /c msifile.msi /i /quiet .... Runs bat file in an Exec. Unfortunately, it fails due to UAC, I am wondering how people are working around UAC in their Windows Puppet environments. The Puppet documentation seems to only talk about Puppet's own executable in regards to UAC.

  I was reading the comments and answers to this question, and among them I found this: "And Java never was cool, simply because it threw the hacking part out of programming" and this: "And javascript is very hackerish language so after developing your frontend you feel very constraint when you return to java." What's the "hacking part" in programming, and what makes a language "hackerish"? What are some good examples of languages and features in languages that you would call "hackerish"? (Someone might say that I shouldn't be confused by the word "hackerish", that's it's not really a "proper" English word or something like that, but that's besides the point)

• Good quality Secure Software Development Training [closed]

  Just had my annual appraisal and found out my company is willing to pay for training and exams etc! Woohoo (they kept that one quiet). I'm interested in doing a course on secure development techniques. Has anyone got any suggestions for good quality distance learning courses in secure development (I could probably get a couple of days off to attend a conference/ course if required)? We're mostly an MS .Net house but I have no particular allegiance to MS or any other programming language (though, obviously, C++ is the best language in the world). I have 12 years development experience working in (what are now) PCI:DSS environments, including designing and developing a key management system and I have some knowledge of basic attacks (XSS, injection etc). I would prefer a hard course I struggle with to a basic course I learn 3 things from (but hopefully get something right at my level).   Does Vim have a command equivalent to Emacs' Ctrl-I? Emacs has an extremely useful shortcut "C-I" which fixes indentation of the current line (or selected lines.) For example, suppose you write this tiny code on Emacs: def foo print "boo" end and you are selecting the whole 3 lines. You press "C-I" then the code becomes def foo print "boo" end I can use this in quiet mode i.e. ignoring. Emacs as well. Does anyone know how to do this on Vim?

• 2d engine with WebGL

  I am currently developing a HTML5 canvas game with a sprite-based 2d engine. The engine is working well so far, but now I thought that I could maybe add some cool graphic effects when I would re-implement the whole engine with WebGL. The whole graphic engine would stay strictly two-dimensional (think of it as a 3d world where the z coordinate of all vertices is 0.0). What I hope to gain from this is the ability to use pixel shaders to create special effects. I also think that the performance could improve. What do you think about that plan?

  This is a nifty small tool that i'm using quite often in scripts that stop something and do some tasks afterwards and i don't want to hassle around with the contract file system. It's not a cool feature, but it's useful and relatively less known. An example: As i wrote long ago, you should never use kill -9 because often the normal kill is intercepted by the application and it starts to do some clean up tasks first before really stopping the process. So just because kill has returned, it doesn't imply that the process is away. How do you wait for process to disappear? (more)
