• why does our network printer not show up on some of our macs, but does show up on others? [on hold]

  We lost power in our building and now cannot get our HP laser jet 5200 to be recognized by half of our computers. We are all Macs, some running OS 10.7.5 can see the printer, others running 10.7.5 cannot, and those running 10.8.5 and 10.9 cannot. We've re-booted the router, turned off and on printer and macs—no go. The printer displays an IP address (dynamically assigned) but we can't access it. Tried to see it using CUPS—same story, can see it on some systems, not on others. Any thoughts?

  I have a "inspiron 1525"and am running 11.10 version of Ubuntu, I noticed that when scrolling I can see a lag and also when playing back HD content it will freeze the video for a few seconds and then resume, none of those happened on winVista when I had it installed, now I do prefer Ubuntu and would like to fix this rather than go back to windows. the chip is an "intel corporation mobile gm965 gl960 integrated graphics controller" as stated by "lspci" I don't know much about dealing with installing drivers that's why I'm asking for help and would like to be commands that I can put on terminal, rather than go here and then there and then look for this or that. I think I'll get lost in the middle but terminal I can follow. thanks for your help.

• Menu to let me choose OS to run in a dual boot machine

  I recently re-imaged my Dell PC to dual-install Windows 7 and Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS. The dual-boot was a success, since I was able to start whichever OS I wanted. Now, I installed some software (the OpenJDK package) on the Ubuntu side of the PC. Upon restarting Ubuntu, I unfortunately lost the ability to choose the OS that I wanted to run (i.e., Ubuntu). Ordinarily, I'd expect to: 1. Hit the power button 2. A menu (Grub?) shows up listing all OSs installed in the PC (namely, Win7 and Ubuntu) 3. Choose which OS I want and hit enter. bingo. The problem is that I don't see that menu (step 2 above). Instead, windows automatically starts, even when I hit F12 to see the boot options, none of which I understand. Your help would be great! • Keyboad layout: In 13.10, modified symbols do not apply

  I like to tweak my Colemak layout a bit, so I changed /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/us to contain my changes. Sure, they get lost on an upgrade, but that is not very often. After upgrading to 13.10, this does not work anymore. I changed the file, but the changes are not applied. Neither when I use the settings program, nor when I issue setxkbmap 'us(colemak)' directly. Where is this data stored now, is there some kind of cache?

• USB disk not recognized after detaching from DVD player. What to do?

  I had one Transcend 4GB USB stick formatted to NTFS and was working fine. Today I inserted this disk into a DVD player, and it was saying, "loading". After a long time, noting happened, and it seemed that the stick (NTFS) is not recognized by it. I took out the stick and tried to reformat to FAT32. But the stick is not being recognized in my machine (Ubuntu 12.04). I tried the advices from USB drive not recognized after Erase Disk, without any success. When I tried Disk Utility, the stick is indicated as a generic device. See image, Formatting this device fails, saying, No medium found. Again see image, gparted does not even list this device. The same thing happens for fdisk. It is not listed there. Have I totally lost this stick? What should I do?

• Having trouble's understanding NIF model file format?

  I'm attempting too develop a 3rd party application to make it easy to import 3d model part's into my mod for skyrim the plan was to have a fileviewer and preview window of the nif model but since , I don't know what the NIF file format actually is or where to get the vertex data from it or the hole nine yards of parsing a text file in detail I'm at a lost what to do. I'm very good at C++ but not at this super over complicated file formats , id much prefer .obj over the nif file format specification here -- http://niftools.sourceforge.net/doc/nif/index.html If someone could help me in understanding the file format in a natural and simple way and the exact parsing needed to create the 3D Model in the frustum and a explanation on how you figured that out would be happy to know.   I am a student and have obtained a one year placement at a business that develops an e-commerce system using C#, HTML, WPF, javascript, ASP and more. Although I do have a little bit of knowledge, I find myself being assigned a lot of tasks that are beyond me and even when I ask for help, the response I get is often cryptic to me. I stare at as much code as possible to just try and "throw myself into it" but I often just get lost in the code I like to consider myself a fast learner and I am damn determined to be a good programmer. I would just like to ask if there are some tips for me to catch up as quick as possible? I don't want to be a nuisance and sit here and ask for help 24/7. I just want to crack on!

  In my experience, a Software Development Team that comprises: 1 Project Manager 1 Tech Lead 1 - 2 Senior Dev 2 - 3 Junior Dev (Fresh grad) Only the Tech Lead & PM (and/or Senor Dev/s) will participate in a meeting with Clients, Domain Experts, Client's technical resource. I can think of the ff potential pitfalls: Important info gets lost Human error (TL/PM might forgot to disseminate info due to pressure or plain human error) Non-verbal info (maybe a presentation using a diagram presented by Domain Expert) Maintaining Ubiquitous language is harder to build since not all team members get to hear the non-dev persons Potential of creative minds are not fully realized (Personally, I am more motivated to think/explore when I am involved with these important meetings) Advantages of this approach: Only one point of contact Less time spent on meetings? • How to make Nautilus name column display at the width of the longest filename

  Prior to a recent glytch where I lost some of my custom settings, Nautilus would open directories and display the name-column wide enough to show the longest filename on display. It did it dynamically; If I renamed a file to a longer or shorter name, the column was automatically adjusted to the new width.. It's not doing that now, and I have no idea how to get this function back.. UPDATE I hadn't mentioned it, but I am talking about the List view... I have been fossicing around in the GConf Editpr and came across a setting for Compact View which does exactly what I am referring to... but it only effects the Compact View... that setting is: gconf-editor /apps/nautilus/compact_view/all_columns_have_same_width ...but I can't find the setting for List View... I know the capability exists, because I've been using it until only a few days ago, when my system got hung up...

• Effective methods for managing work tasks? (documenting/remembering/prioritizing)

  I'm looking for suggestions on effective methods that I can use to document, remember and prioritize tasks at work. Many of the these tasks belong to a primary project, but they also exist for independent initiatives. The tasks themselves cover everything from development to documentation to discussions, with varying priorities, and deadlines ranging from right away to a few months from now. Historically I have used a notepad to keep track of these tasks, with a star next to an item indicating it needs to be done and a check mark when it's completed. However, as I gain more responsibilities and more things to manage: it becomes harder to make sure I've done everything (because some things get lost 5 pages back) it becomes harder to remember what's most important to do next it becomes harder to keep track of dependencies between tasks Has anyone found methods that have made their tasks easier to manage? I've considered adding some meta-data to keep track of what's most important and dependencies, or possibly switching to an app that could automate this (if such a thing exists). Something that's accessible anywhere would definitely be a plus.

• I think I deleted my windows

  I tried to intall backtrack using a bootable cd. I think I clicked the option and it overwrote my windows 7. How do I get that back? I do not have a windows restore cd. Backtrack did not actually install at the time it stated there was a problem at 24% I then tried to get into Windows after shutting down and OS never booted up again. Does this mean I lost all my documents and programs? Can I call the company that sold my laptop to and get a bootable CD? Thank you.

• Deleted files not increasing available free space on Ubuntu (as reported by df -h)

  I am writing data munging scripts (python and bash), to munge data and import large quantities of text files into a database. I am currently in the test phase, so I am generating several K's of files and deleting them (the files consume about 20G of space). After a test run, I delete the files (sometimes without having imported into the database). I notice that there is a steady decrease in the amount of free space on my disk (as reported by df -h). I don't understand this, as I use rm * (in the data directory), and in the cases where I use Nautilus, I empty the Trash bin as well. Similarly, I notice that when I import the data into the (postgresql) database, and then delete the data from the tables using DELETE FROM tablename;, the size consumed in the postgresql data directory does not go down either. Currently, I have lost approximately 200G from hard drive, and I need to reclaim that - but don't know what to do to reclaim it - any ideas?. I am running Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS + postgresql 8.4

• Google Chrome Browser does not display the images from Local network or local host? [migrated]

  While developing and testing a site on local network I have noticed that while IE/FireFox would display the images coming from URL's like "http:\mypc" or "http:\localhost" or ip adress on the netwrok , google chrome on Galaxy, Windows Machine, or google Android will not display the images. After having burned too many hours trying various CSS, image src tag, html document description tricks, I have given up. During my search I found (and lost) the link to chrome forums regarding this issue that seemed to say it is just so by users. Anyone has any more information on weather it is possible to view images on local host/computer name on netwrok or ip adress?

  i have been working in technology field for last 7 years. i started with vb.net windows application along with oracle plsql. Later on i did projects that included coding in java ,struts framework ,javascripts. I have lost interest in doing projects with struts framework and doesn't find oracle plsql appealing too. I would love to work with new technologies especially mobile techs and my interests in coding persists still. But i am not sure if my organisation will ever shift its tech base to new and modern frameworks. Now i am 25 years old and worried about taking the right decision. i feel like quitting the job but at the same time i am concerned if i have the sufficient tech skills to start working on modern technologies in other organisations. Also i am confused if i must stick to the same company and wait for management jobs. Kindly suggest your opinions on the right strategy i must opt , being a 25 year old with this background.

  I have seen this question on Quora where lots of people seem to agree that OpenID is bad, even going as far as stating that: OpenID is the worst possible "solution" I have ever seen in my entire life to a problem that most people don't really have Then I've seen articles and tweets referencing that question saying that OpenID has lost, and Facebook won. It's sad to read as I quite like the OpenID (or at least idea behind it). I literally hate getting yet another login/password for page (I'll forget it anyway) - it's a pretty serious issue for me and I know lots of people with the same problem. Thus I thought that OpenId is a great solution but I'm not sure anymore. So the question is should I still bother to implement OpenID or it's not worth it? What is the most robust and convenient (from the user perspective) way to identify and authenticate an user?

• Blank Screen on 12.04

  Can hit Ctrl-Alt-F1 and login but no fixes work. Tried nomodeset and everything else appears to have upgraded but can't see anything. I really need this computer to work. It is an old Dell with 1.6 processor with old school monitor. I don't know why people are giving my question negative votes. If you know how to fix this, then please help me, as I have read and tried all the solutions that I've found. Just for the record reformatting is not fixing it, and I can't get a boot CD to load either. If you know how to use the blank screen fix tutorial, please explain cos I'm lost. Most people don't understand this stuff and an easy "how-to" fix would be nice.

They are lynx & elinkswhen i have tried to use them to access web-pages from terminal i didn't felt any kind of speed improvements . Network menu does not show wireless access points, but according to syslog it establishes connection. Also, the wireless router provides IP address to the host. I don't want to spend time on debugging and solving the problem that most probably will reappear with new update, so I decided to reinstall 12.10 version. It recognized Broadcom Wi-Fi modem right after the boot, and everything went great, until today I powered it on and suddenly found that it is running 13.4 and all my problems are back! Is it possible to instruct it to stay with 12.10 until I decide to upgrade?

  I've been trying to learn OpenGL ES 2.0 to create a simple 2D game. I bought a book on android development, but after seeing that the author uses his own SDK that implements OpenGL ES 1.0 I decided to just use online tutorials. I've been so lost trying to find out what to use. The Matrices and shaders of 2.0 confuse me and I can't find any tutorial that just explains how to texture map a simple 2D image. Basically: OpenGL ES 1.x or 2.0 for simple 2D with little OpenGL experience If 2.0 Any good tutorials for 2.0, I've found so many for 1.0
