• Terminal.app fonts broken on Mac Snow Leopard

  About an year ago I installed gnome fonts on my MacBook Pro and I use them for Terminal.app Today I was using Terminal with three windows open and suddenly the app has quit (I don't know if I accidentally pressed command+q) but when I reopened the application fonts looks strange. I had a screenshot taken before the accident I did the same screenshot now and here's the result I don't know what's happened, I tried to reinstall the fonts, restarted the computer, but with no luck. One more thing, I use an external screen, I read some posts regarding font issues with external monitors but I had this monitor before this accident and everything worked fine until now. Please help me to solve this because my eyes were used to that font and now it looks weird to see this different font

• issues changing default version when updating Python on Mac

  I have a MacBook that came with Python 2.5 installed. I need use a newer version, so I downloaded 3.1 and installed it, then ran the "Update Profile Script" that came with it, which is supposed to change the default version of Python to the one I downloaded. It appeared to run fine and said process completed, but it didn't work. When I type "python" into the terminal it displays version 2.5, and I still can't install pygame, which requires at least Python 2.6. When I do vi .profile I get this: export PATH=.:/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH export MANPATH=/opt/local/man:$MANPATH Setting PATH for Python 3.1 The orginal version is saved in .profile.pysave PATH="/Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.1/bin:${PATH}" export PATH ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ".profile" 6L, 251C So it looks like the script did do something, but I don't know enough bash script to understand what. Does anyone know what the issue could be or how to fix it? Thanks a lot!

  There is some error reported when I run Disk Utility and verify the root volume on my OS X MacBook. So I boot and CMD-S into the shell mode and run /sbin/fsck -fy. Errors are like: ** Checking catalog file. Missing thread record (id = ...) In correct number of thread records ** Checking catalog hierarchy. Invalid volume file count (It should be ... instead of ...) ** Repairing Volume Missing directory record (id = ...) I'd like to know what is the cause of the above errors? Hopefully I will be more careful in the future to prevent them from happening again. p.s. I am using a SSD and so I assume mechanical hard disk error is less likely. Thanks!

• Snapshot/rollback for libvirt+KVM?

  I've recently begun using KVM for my development/test environment on a Linux host system with 8G memory. Prior, I was using VMware Fusion for my virtual environment, but my Macbook only has 2G memory. I tried VMware Server and ESX on the host instead of KVM, but the webUI doesn't run on Mac OSX's Firefox, and we're going to be doing more with KVM anyway. The main feature of VMware I miss is robust snapshot/rollback, but I'm missing this in KVM. I understand the snapshot command, but it shuts down the guest OS when complete, and then copying the disk image to preserve its state is cumbersome. Is this really the best way to manage snapshots on KVM?

• Moving VMWare Fusion image to Boot Camp

  I have Windows 7 64-bit running in VMWare Fusion on my MacBook, but am disappointed with the performance, and so I want to try Boot Camp. However, I'd like to avoid reinstalling Windows and all my applications; I just want to somehow copy my VMWare Fusion "disk image" to a Boot Camp partition. My initial thoughts are that I should be able to run a Windows backup program in VMWare Fusion to back up the entire virtual disk, then set up Boot Camp and restore from that backup. However, Googling finds a few posts by people who have tried that and have encountered problems. So, is there a "known good" procedure for doing this?

Currently I don't have NIS or LDAP setup (I got only 2 users) and I just manually setup the UID/GID on the hosts. • Microsoft Entourage/Exchange Server problem: all objects disappeared from server - still in some for

  One of our employees works with Entourage on his MacBook Pro (OSX 10.6) accessing Exchange Server 2007. Last Friday morning, I think while working over a VPN, Entourage (I think it was Entourage) deleted all his objects (mail, calendar, contacts) on the server and while creating a lot of strange folders (starting with underscores) on the client. The local data seems to be there, but not in a consistent form. Since the user's mailbox is rather big, I suspect, that there was some kind of "move" operation which did not complete. I tried to export the data, but the export stops because of a corrupted object. Is there a tool or another way to export or retrieve the local data? Edit - FYI: we solved the problem getting his data from the previous night's backup.

  I have a Macbook Pro with a dead CD drive. I don't have easy access to a replacement drive. I'm trying to install Ubuntu, and I can't get the MBP to recognize a USB stick as a bootable media (I believe MBP's have issues with booting from USB in some cases). Is it possible to take a disk image and write it to a partition on the HDD so that I can then boot from that partition and then install the OS onto a third partition?   Snow Leopard now supports Wake on WLAN, but not all hardware supports this. For example, my Octo Mac Pro from early 2008 has an AirPort card, but it does not support this. Nor does my 2007 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. For reference to what is needed, look at http://www.macrumors.com/2009/08/28/a-closer-look-at-snow-leopards-wake-on-demand-feature/ which includes a screenshot of what the System Profiler should show. It's pretty hard to find Apple parts, but is it possible to put newer cards into these machines to have them support Wake on Wireless?

• Can't connect to Apple Time Capsule in home network using Home Plugs from Win 7 Machine

  I have the following home network setup with subnet 255.255.255.0 but recently moved my time capsule to a different location when I added a third Home Plug and can no longer ping or map a network drive to it from the Windows 7 Machine. However using Airport Utility on the Windows 7 machine I can manually configure the Time Capsule. Using a Macbook on WIFI Network 1 or 2 - I can backup to the time capsule, so its accessible via both the router wifi network and the time capsule wifi network. The Time Capsule is set to BRIDGE function - ie no NAT or DHCP server enabled. Any bright sparks out there that can help diagnose the problem?   I have been investigating the possibility of using my PC to control my soon to arrive Mac Mini when on the move. I can't afford and hope you don't give me answers suggesting buying a MacBook. My Mac Mini is the high end type. Now I have seen that the only viable option seems to be VNC. But how does this work if I am not on a network? Does VNC work with an ad-hoc network? Can a PC be connected to a Mac on such a network? Can this network be configured once at home and then be available on startup on the move? If I have an iPhone, can I use it as my wifi? But then, how would I start the Mac Mini to make the connection, since it wouldn't have a screen on the move? Finally, are there any small portable screens one can carry in a bag?

• Using the Drop Box folder while sharing on Mac OS X, files are locked.

  While using the Drop Box in the Shared folder on two MacBook Pros running Mac OS X 10.6, I noticed that when files were dropped into the drop box they were read only (locked?) when going from one of the laptops to the other (but not necessarily the other direction). Is there a way to change this? My girlfriend nearly had an aneurism because she couldn't rename a file. I duplicated it and deleted the original, but this seems unnecessary.   I am using Mountain Lion Developer Preview 2. I cannot find the "Create Network" menuitem in the WiFi icon menu in the menubar. It was there before when I was using Lion. It started missing since I upgraded to Mountain Lion Developer Preview 1. By the way, is there any other method to create an ad-hoc WiFi network on OS X? I tried to use Internet Sharing via WiFi, but other devices using the shared connection could not find the Mac in their local networks. I am using an early 2011 MacBook Pro 15'. Thanks.

• How do I open a 60M png image on OSX

  Alright, so I've been looking around on this site on how to open a big PNG image. The question I found was about a 10M png. Xee apparently did the job. So, I downloaded Xee for my 60M file, but it crashes. So does iPhoto, Pixelmator and previewer. In the Pixelmator and Xee case, I actually had to kill the computer, and restart it. It crashed so 'hard' I couldn't get it to respond again. How do I open this file? (and zoom it) Specs: newly acquired macbook pro: 4gb memory, 2.3ghz i7 58M png image approx: 15000x30000 pixels

  Is it theoretically possible for a cheapo Mini DisplayPort to HDMI cable or adapter to support resolutions above 1920 × 1200, e.g. 2560 × 1440 (QHD)? Or is it always electrically-equivalent to a single-link DVI, and such resolutions above 1920×1200 are out of the question? From empirical evidence, I've tried out some rather expensive brand-name adapter from a local Apple dealer that was marked as HDMI 1.3 compliant with my mid-2013 MacBook Air (5000) and also with X230 (4000), and a QHD monitor, but was only getting a maximum of FHD resulution through such an arrangement.

• Time Capsule Refuses to Connect After Interrupted File Transfer

  I have a first generation Apple Time Capsule set up as a NAS on my network. I use the built-in hard drive for Time Machine backups, with a 1.5 TB external HDD attached to the Time Capsule over USB. Whenever I cancel a file transfer from the external drive to my Macbook (or quit a video I had been streaming from it, as was the most recent incident), I can no longer connect to the Time Capsule or the attached drive, and I have to unplug it to get it working again. How can I fix this? Is it a network error? Could the Time Capsule be at fault or could it be my computer?

  I am on my way to Europe for 20 days with the wife and teenage kids. Among us, we have 3 iPhones, 1 Blackberry, 2 iPad 3G and 2 Macbook Pro laptops. Each has Skype. I am very concerned about AT&T data charges, and I am looking for a sensible alternative. For example, the AT&T data plans for the phones and iPads are $200 EACH for 200 MB per device. That is $1,200 and does not even cover the laptops. Ouch!!! I am thinking about a prepaid data plan from a European cell system of some sort combined with a GSM data modem and a Cradlepoint router, such as the CTR500. So, questions: 1) Anyone know of a GSM data source in Europe where I can buy a GSM Modem compatible with the CTR500 at a reasonable prepaid rate? 2) Experience with the CTR500?

• How to convert laptop drive for use as VMware image?

  I have a windows laptop that recently died (dead motherboard). It being a 7 year old laptop, I decided to give Apple a try this time around and try to use VMware to access my old data if necessary. In order to do this, I need to convert the physical drive to a VMware image. Googling around, it looks like I might be able to use VMware Convertor to do this. My original intent was to plug the laptop drive into a windows desktop via an external USB enclosure and create the image that way. However, upon further investigation, it looks like VMware Converter only supports converting a local machine (the desktop) or a remote machine (via IP) but not a laptop drive plugged into the local machine. So with that in mind, I'm looking for suggestions and help on how to convert this laptop drive into something I can use on my new Macbook Pro.

• Trouble upgrading OS X, because HD doesn't use GUID Partition Table Scheme

  So I have a MacBook with Mac OS X 10.5 and I'm trying to upgrade to 10.6, but when I run the upgrade 'install' I quickly get to a page where I am supposed to 'Select the disk where you want to install Mac OS X' and there is only the one hard drive, so it is auto selected, and below that I see a warning message and the only button available is the 'Go Back' button. The warning message says: "Macintosh HD" can't be used because it doesn't use the GUID Partition Table scheme. Use Disk Utility to change the partition scheme. Select the disk, choose the Partition tab, select the Volume Scheme and then click Options. So I followed the above instructions, and I got to the last step, where I'm supposed to click the 'Options' button, the problem is that I cannot click that button, it is disabled.. So what am I supposed to do?

• After installing Windows Phone 8 SDK, Connectify doesn't work

  Today I installed Windows Phone 8 SDK from the official site. After installing and a couple of restarts (it restarted the PC to enable Hyper-V), I opened Connectify. I use Connectify Hotspot to connect my iPod to the internet as I have an ethernet connection and no wireless router. The problem is that now, Connectify doesn't show WiFi in Share Over. The attached screenshot shows this. Previously, before I installed the SDK, it would show Ethernet and Wi-Fi. I would select WiFi and share my internet. Now, this is completely screwed. EDIT: I found out that the Microsoft Virtual Wi-Fi Miniport Driver has got disabled and I am not able to enable it again. Please advise. Please advise on what to do Hardware: Windows 8 Pro with Media Center, Apple MacBook Pro 9,1 15 inch Mid-2012 (non retina)
