  I'm running ntpd server in my ubuntu (10.04) machine. But it is always stays in the 'INIT' state as shown below. lyra@ws07475:~$ ntpq -p remote refid st t when poll reach delay offset jitter ============================================================================== europium.canoni .INIT. 16 u - 1024 0 0.000 0.000 0.000 lyra@ws07475:~$ Of course, this means that it is not keeping time.   I was wondering how to encrypt my external HDD so that my data would be safe AND accessible from any OS platform (Windows and Linux). So I went through many posts and forums and found out the best thing was to use true crypt. I went along with this post and encrypt my USB drive. When inserted that, Windows didn't recognize it. Then I followed another post that said to install truecrypt. The thing is : How can i use traveler disk setup in Ubuntu (Option not found)? Install truecrypt in USB so that i can *mount my USB or HDD on any other OS? If there is no solution for the upper two, then is there any other software which I can use to encrypt an USB device so that it can be accessed from any OS?

• Dual mode 802.11n PCI adapters

  I have recently bought a DLink DIR-825 router. It is a dual mode (2.4GZ & 5GHZ) 802.11n wireless access point/router. What is a good PCI adapter to pair with it? DLink appear to only make one dual mode adapter, which is the DWA-160 USB adapter. They don't seem to have a PCI adapter in their range, which seems very strange. Do any of the other network manufacturers make a good dual mode adapter?

I am having issues getting google-chrome browser into full KIOSK MODE with no browser bar on a linux platform Looking through the google forums I have found numerous postings on how to get Chrome to show full kiosk mode BUT tried to execute with --kiosk but doesnt seem to get the job done. I dont know if this is platform specific or not, but any useful information would help. I know F11 will display the browser in full kiosk mode, with no browser bar BUT is there a way to do this with a linux script and no need for a monkey pressing F11??

  We are developing our web application using JAVA GWT framework. We are using Eclipse Indigo as a development GUI. We are facing problems while debugging the JAVA gwt application in eclipse. Most of the time, Eclipse hangs while debugging. We tried to increase the memory buffer size in eclipse but no luck. We had tried to run the eclipse in various environment like Windows, Fedora 16, Cent OS. but some how not getting positive results.   Today I had to schedule a package stored in the shiny new SSIS Catalog store that can be enabled with SQL Server 2012. This is the script that will get executed if you try to execute your packages right from management studio or through a SQL Server Agent job, will be similar to the following: Declare @execution_id bigint EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[create_execution] @package_name='my_package.dtsx', @execution_id=@execution_id OUTPUT, @folder_name=N'BI', @project_name=N'DWH', @use32bitruntime=False, @reference_id=Null Select @execution_id DECLARE @var0 smallint = 1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'LOGGING_LEVEL', @parameter_value=@var0 DECLARE @var1 bit = 0 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'DUMP_ON_ERROR', @parameter_value=@var1 EXEC [SSISDB].[catalog].[start_execution] @execution_id GO The problem here is that the procedure will simply start the execution of the package and will return as soon as the package as been started…thus giving you the opportunity to execute packages asynchrously from your T-SQL code. This is just *great*, but what happens if I what to execute a package and WAIT for it to finish (and thus having a synchronous execution of it)? You have to be sure that you add the “SYNCHRONIZED” parameter to the package execution. Before the start_execution procedure: exec [SSISDB].[catalog].[set_execution_parameter_value] @execution_id,  @object_type=50, @parameter_name=N'SYNCHRONIZED', @parameter_value=1 And that’s it . PS From the RC0, the SYNCHRONIZED parameter is automatically added each time you schedule a package execution through the SQL Server Agent. If you’re using an external scheduler, just keep this post in mind .

• Cannot access system after deleting passwd file

  I was trying to change my user name and also my /home/username and my system started to crash. I deleted the passwd file but I had a backup named passwd_bkp. I tried to rename this passwd_bkp as passwd and it did not work. No commands were being executed... I was in a terminal window. I re-started my system and now I cannot login. The GRub loads two options: Linux and recovery mode. I tried to open a sessions as root but it says the file system is corrupted. I cannot access my files. Did I lose all my files?

  I have been convinced (over at stackoverflow) to use my beloved bash in vi mode. So far I got used to it quite well and I like it. However I really do miss one feature: In emacs-mode, you can enter the last parameter of the previous command by pressing "ESC ." (That is, press escape followed by the .) Is there a default binding to insert the last parameter in vi-mode? I wasn't able to find one and I really miss this command... Thanks a lot

  The title is the first error that has sent me on a mission to fix things. Motivation: I was trying to install the new Enthought Python Distribution -- when the error above first showed up. The install finished -- and looked like there were a few more times it flagged dcopserver problems: Please check that "dcopserver" program is running! Could not read network connection list: ~/home/user/.DCOPserver_host__0 When running ipython from the distribution, it claims that readline (the ability to up arrow in history or tab-complete) is not available for my system. It is though -- if I run the ipython that's sitting in /usr/bin/ipython all readline features work perfectly. So, I tried to fix the install by trying to fix what I thought could be causing the problems. Bad things that are happening that I want to be fixed: When restarting I get the error: Could not update ICEauthority file /home/username/.ICEauthority. ipython readline doesn't work with Enthought's ipython Things I have tried: changed the owner of my ~/.ICEauthority to be me. changed the owner of home directory (and all nested files and folders) to be me double checked that /var/lib/gdm was owned by Gnome (yep) attempted to reinstall DCOP, kbuildsycoca stuff (fail) I've removed nautilus; rebooted; reinstalled; rebooted; removed ubuntu-desktop; rebooted; reinstalled; rebooted. Any suggestions on how to fix the Bad Things that are happening would be greatly appreciated! Computer: Ubuntu 10.04 x86

• Skype Silent Mode

  So Skype has a silent mode: e.g. it won't alert you in any way about incoming calls/messages. I'd like to use that mode while working to keep Skype from distracting me. I'd rather not quit the program or signoff during that time. Is there a simple way to put Skype in that mode? There's an option for it in their SDK but not in the software. There are third party apps that do it (among other things), but there doesn't seem to be a simple solution for this. Help please!

• Update Manager offers 900+ updates under partial upgrade mode

  Today I checked for updates and got an error message telling me I must do a partial upgrade. I was shocked to see how many updates there were available. 900+ Updates! By using synaptic I found out that it wanted to remove core packages from my system, such as compiz and python, but also update some as well. I am very confused why package manager would want to do this all of a sudden, and why it wants to destroy my system. I really need an answer, because I now cannot update my system.

• What is "2LUN" mode in connection with RAID?

  I've came across RAID products that also list JBOD (just a bunch of disks) mode and 2LUN mode. What the heck is 2LUN mode? I could not find a description; the closest thing seems to be LUN 'logical unit number' but I don't get the 2LUN thing. UPDATE 1 This is what Wikipedia has to say about JBOD: JBOD (derived from "just a bunch of disks"): an architecture involving multiple hard drives, while making them accessible either as independent hard drives, or as a combined (spanned) single logical volume with no actual RAID functionality. So JBOD can actually mean two different (albeit related) things. Answer of Guest says 2LUN means no spanning. Does this suggest that 2LUN would simply mean the JBOD-variant with no span?

• haproxy - pass original / remote ip in tcp mode

  I've got haproxy set up with keepalived for load balancing and ip failover of a percona cluster, and since it works great I'd like to use the same lb / failover for another service/daemon. I've configured haproxy this way: listen my_service 0.0.0.0:4567 mode tcp balance leastconn option tcpka contimeout 500000 clitimeout 500000 srvtimeout 500000 server host1 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx1:4567 check port 4567 inter 5000 rise 3 fall 3 server host2 xxx.xxx.xxx.xx2:4567 check port 4567 inter 5000 rise 3 fall 3 The load balancing works fine, but the service sees the IP of the load balancer instead of the actual IPs of the clients. In http mode it's quite easy to have haproxy pass along the remote IP, but how do I do in tcp mode? This is critical due to the nature of the service I need to load balance. Thanks! Vito

  I have an old Windows XP Mode vhd backed up from my previous system, but I'm having difficulty getting it running on the new system. The vhd is a differencing disk, and its parent is the standard Windows XP Mode base; I still have the old parent, and have verified it is binary identical to the XP Mode base in my new installation of XP Mode. But in the new system, the path to the differencing disk parent is different than the old. When I open up the settings for the .vmcx for my old XP mode, and select "Hard Disk 1", the "Virtual hard disk file" is set correctly, but the "Parent Disk:" field is pointing at the wrong path, and I can't see any way to edit it. Does anyone know how?

• How do I customize zsh's vim mode?

  Ok, so I finally made the great change. In my .zshenv, I changed my EDITOR: export EDITOR=vim There are a couple of questions I have that are so minor that I didn't want to start separate questions for them. Here they are: How do I get zsh to distinguish between insert mode and command mode like in vim? Preferably this would change the cursor from an underline to a block like in vim, but displaying text at the bottom would work as well. How do I get it to act more like vim? For instance, I'd rather it be in command mode by default and not go out of it after one command.
