• Links to ASP.NET application in MS Word document

  I am observing a weird behavior when clicking links to my ASP.NET application in MS Word 2003 / 2007 document. I have IE8 installed. When I click a link in the document the request that is sent has the user-agent IE7(!?). A new session object is created. Right after that out of nowhere a second request appears this time having user-agent IE8. More over, when I click anything on the requested page, a new session object is once again created, so I cannot rely on anything that has been persisted in the session. Why is it like that?

• MS SQL Server Text Datatype Maxlength = 65,535?

  Software I'm working with uses a text field to store XML. From my searches online, the text datatype is supposed to hold 2^31 - 1 characters. Currently SQL Server is truncating the XML at 65,535 characters every time. I know this is caused by sqlserver, because if I add a 65,536th character to the field directly in Management Studio, it states that it will not update because characters will be truncated. Is the Maxlength really 65,535 or could this be because the database was designed in an earlier version of MS SQL Server (2000) and it's using the legacy text datatype instead of 2005's? If this is the case, will Altering the datatype to Text in sql server 2005 fix this issue?

  Is there an easy way to automatically convert a bunch of MS Word documents to xslt stylesheets that can be displayed in the browser? What I have is a large collection of forms in Word format that have to be displayed in the browser, or sent to the user, with known fields populated from a data source, edited by a user and, finally, printed (including the original headers and footers). The data entered by the user will not need to be saved. I'm not sure if converting the documents to stylesheets is even feasible. Maybe someone has a better idea of how to achieve this? Installing Office on the server is not an option in my case.

• MS SQL Server Job with precise timing

  Hi, I have a DB with game data (map, players, etc...) and I have a game core mechanics writen in T-SQL stored procedure. I need process game loop (via the stored procedure) every "X" seconds. I tried used the SQL Job, but when I set the interval to seconds, the SQL server stops responding. If I set the interval greater than one minute, all was ok. I need game loop precise in time, e.g. the game loop will run only once and will be executed every "X" precisely (tolerance should be less than one second). Can I do it with MS SQL Server capabilities? Or should I create a windows service which will repeatly execute game loop procedure? Or should I go another way? Thanks! EDIT: The game loop stored procedure takes less than the interval.

  I have seen this question pop-up on stackoverflow a few times but haven't found a good solution yet. I am looking for recommendations on Virtual Private Server Hosting featuring Windows Server 2008 plus MS SQL database capabilities. I have seen people suggest webhost4life.com, hostmysite.com and others but they do not offer windows server 2008 hosting, only 2003. I have also looked at mosso and aspnix.com. Mosso seems like a good move, but an hoping to find something below $100 a month and I have heard extremel mixed reviews on aspnix.com. Thanks for the help.

  I'm not very fluent with MS-SQL commands. I need a script to restore a database from a .bak file and move the logical_data and logical_log files to a specific path. I can do: restore filelistonly from disk='D:\backups\my_backup.bak' This will give me a result set with a column LogicalName, next I need to use the logical names from the result set in the restore command: restore database my_db_name from disk='d:\backups\my_backups.bak' with file=1, move 'logical_data_file' to 'd:\data\mydb.mdf', move 'logical_log_file' to 'd:\data\mylog.ldf' How do I capture the logical names from the first result set into variables that can be supplied to the "move" command? I think the solution might be trivial, but I'm pretty new to mssql.

  Running MS SQL 2008, and I am definitely a new SQL user. I have a table that has 4 columns: EmpNum, User, Action, Updatetime A user logs into, and out of a system, it is registered in the database. For example, if user1 logs into the system, then out 5 minutes later, a simple query (select * from update) would look like: EmpNum User Action Updatetime 1 User1 I 2010-01-01 23:00:00:000 1 User1 O 2010-01-01 23:05:00:000 I'm trying to query the Empnum, User, Action, I(in time), O(out time), and the total time. • Considerations when porting a MS VC++ program (single machine) to a rocks cluster

  I am trying to port a MS VC++ program to run on a rocks cluster! I am not very good with linux but I am eager to learn and I imagine porting it wouldn't be an impossible task for me. However, I do not understand how to take advantage of the cluster nodes. because it seems that the code execute only runs on the front end server (obviously). I have read a little about MPI and its seems like I should use MPI to comminicate between nodes. The program is currently written such that I have a main thread that synchronizes all worker threads. The main thread also recieves commands to manipulate the simulation or query its state. If the simulation is properly setup, communication between executing threads can be significantly minimized. What I don't understand is how do I start the process on the compute nodes and how do I handle failures in nodes? And maybe there should be other things I should also consider when porting my program to run in a cluster?

  I would like to find a replacement for list.com, specifically the ability to accept piped input. For example: p4 sync -n | list which accepts the output of the perforce command and displays the results in the viewer/editor for manipulation or saving. I know that I would send the output to a file and then open the file in the viewer/editor but I use it for temporary results. List.com doesn't work on 64 bit Windows 7.

• Handling nmake errorlevel/return codes

  Hi all, I have an nmake-based project which in turn calls the asp compiler, which can throw an error, which nmake seems to recognize: NMAKE : fatal error U1077: 'C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspnet_compiler.exe' : return code '0x1' However, when I call nmake from within a batch file, the environment variable %ERRORLEVEL% remains set at zero: nmake /NOLOGO echo BUILD RETURNING: %ERRORLEVEL% If I control-c the nmake task, I do end up getting a non-zero ERRORLEVEL (it's set to 2) so my assumption is that I'm able to catch errors okay, but nmake isn't bubbling up the non-zero exit code from it's task. Or, at least, I'm mis-trapping it. Any help would be appreciated.

I need to write one that copies a file to a new folder and renames it At the moment, my batch file consists of only this command: COPY ABC.PDF \\Documents As you can see, it only copies the file ABC.pdf to the network folder 'Documents'. However i need to change this so it renames the file ABCxxx.pdf, where xxx is a text variable that i would like to set somewhere in the batch file. For example, if xxx = "_Draft", then file would be renamed ABC_Draft.pdf after it is copied. Thanks

• Restarting explorer from a batch file only opens an explorer window

  In one part of a batch file (kind of), I need to restart Explorer. I use the following method to accomplish this: taskkill /f /im explorer.exe >nul explorer.exe :: I have also tried: %winDir%\explorer.exe :: start %winDir%\explorer.exe :: start /b %winDir%\explorer.exe :: start /d %winDir%\explorer.exe (as suggested by panda-34) :: :: I've even tried delaying the above commands with: ping localhost -n 11 >nul Then this happens: explorer.exe is successfully terminated (denoted by the lack of taskbar and desktop) An explorer window opens, which I am left with indefinitely (see Image 1) I can only then restart explorer by manually starting a new process from Task Manager (Win + R doesn't respond), even though explorer.exe is actually already in the process list, strangely enough.. (see Image 2)   Now, I say "kind of" as I'm running the batch file from a self-executing SFX archive, created with WinRAR. When executed, the contents of the archive are extracted to %temp% and a user-defined bootstrapper (in this case, my batch file) is run upon successful extraction. The strangest thing about it, though, is that if you manually extract the contents of the archive and run the batch file then explorer restarts correctly. It only ever glitches when called from an SFX.   Here's my situation. A project has as objective to migrate some attachments to another system. These attachments will be located to a parent folder, let's say "Folder 0" (see this question's diagram for better understanding), and they will be zipped/compressed. I want my batch script to be called like so: BatchScript.bat "c:\temp\usd\Folder 0" I'm using 7za.exe as the command line extraction tool. What I want my batch script to do is to iterate through the "Folder 0"'s subfolders, and extract all of the containing ZIP files into their respective folder. It is obligatory that the files extracted are in the same folder as their respective ZIP files. So, files contained in "File 1.zip" are needed in "Folder 1" and so forth. I have read about the FOR...DO command on Windows XP Professional Product Documentation - Using Batch Files. Here's my script: @ECHO OFF FOR /D %folder IN (%%rootFolderCmdLnParam) DO FOR %zippedFile IN (*.zip) DO 7za.exe e %zippedFile I guess that I would also need to change the actual directory before calling 7za.exe e %zippedFile for file extraction, but I can't figure out how in this batch file (through I know how in command line, and even if I know it is the same instruction "cd").   As I understand it, .bat is the old 16-bit naming convention, and .cmd is for 32-bit Windows, i.e., starting with NT. But I continue to see .bat files everywhere, and they seem to work exactly the same using either suffix. Assuming that my code will never need to run on anyhting older than NT, does it really matter which way I name my batch files, or is there some gotcha awaiting me by using the wrong suffix?
