  • Port forwarding using a BT Home Hub 2.0 (Supplied to new BT Infinity Customers in the UK)

    I don't usually have trouble with port forwarding, I've been able to do it successfully on a number of different routers, including Linksys, Belkin, Netgear and Apple (Time Capsule / Airport Extreme). So I'm quite confused here. I had been using my Apple Time Capsule as my router for a few years now, with several port mappings all working fine. But it died recently, so I've had to resort to using the BT Home Hub 2.0 that was supplied with my BT Infinity broadband subscription. The forwarding interface for the Home Hub is simplified for the most part, allowing you to select an application or game and assign it to a particular computer on the network which you choose from a list that the Home Hub has 'discovered'. My Mac Pro has a manually assigned static IP 192.168.1.4 and my router is static at 192.168.1. I have chosen SSH from the list of applications and assigned it to my Mac Pro (the only computer in the list currently). The Home Hub also has a feature to keep a DNS service updated, and I have set it to keep my external IP address updated on my hostname. This is how I had it setup in the past with other routers and not had trouble before. I am able to ping my hostname (and external IP) from outside the network and get a response. But when I try to connect using SSH, the connection times out. The Home Hub also has "Firewall settings". The currently selected setting is: Default: Allow all outgoing connections and block all incoming traffic. Games and application sharing is allowed. But I've tried changing it to: Disabled: All traffic is allowed to pass through your BT Home Hub to your devices. Note: you’ll still need to use the games and application sharing feature to make sure that certain applications work properly. And the connection still times out... So frustrating. The OS X firewall on my Mac is disabled, so I don't think that's in the way. I have tried setting the port forwarding manually, instead of relying on the preset "SSH" option (incase it's not using the port I expect). So I set up my own "application" (as the Home Hub calls it) and forwarded external port 22 TCP to internal port 22 TCP to 192.168.1.4 - but that just gives the same result - unable to connect. Next, with the router's firewall disabled and OS X's firewall disabled, I ran the Shields Up test (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) and the result was that all my service ports (0 - 1055) are in 'Stealth' mode. I.e. nothing even exists at my IP as far as any outsider is concerned... Strange. The only thing that seems to work is setting my Mac Pro as the DMZ - which I don't want to do for obvious reasons. Any help with this would be extremely appreciated, thanks.

    Hey, I'm having trouble with an onboard nvidia gigabit network, under times of heavy load on the network, I'm seeing this error logged: "too many iterations (6) in nv_nic_irq" I'm running Hadoop DFS over these NICs and I see checksum errors build up until the whole thing just fails. I'm running the 2.6.26-2-amd64 kernel, and my initial research seems to imply its a problem with the forcedeth driver. Has anyone run into this problem before? Thanks in advance if anyone can help!   • What is error 324? Is it related to Google Chrome? Or Verizon Webmail?

    My in-laws are having trouble with signing into their Verizon Webmail account at webmail.verizon.net, only when they are on their wireless network. When they try to log in from wireless they get "Error 324" in the browser, in both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer 8. But they can access any other site, and they can get on their Verizon email when they plug in directly to the browser. Why is this?

  • Self-healing Cloud vs Failover Boxes

    Now that self-healing cloud servers are becoming more and more popular, I am currently torn between the decision if I should setup a HAproxy failover for my VPS or if should save myself the trouble and just put my sites on a self-healing cloud server. Does it still make sense to setup your own failover system (HAproxy + 2 or more servers for example) when self healing cloud seems like a practical solution? They seem to do the same job or am I missing something?

  • 403 forbidden root on apache mac os x 10.7, but can access user directories

    When I access http://localhost/ I get 403 Forbidden, but if I access http://localhost/~username it serves up pages. Things I've tried: - checking error logs - swapping out with original httpd conf files - changing DocumentRoot to my user directory (after all that should work if I can access ~username) I've seen 30 plus Q&A sites that all point to people having trouble with user directories being forbidden. I have the opposite problem, and so I'm tearing my hair out here.

    Hi all. I'm having trouble install WinXP Pro on my pc because NTLDR is missing or can't find during installation process. I highly doubt it's my DVD drive because this machine work fine before the install process. The DVD rom work. Is there a work around for this problem? edit: this is the problem that i'm having. I'm trying to reformat the hard disk with killdisk.

If I want to do other things with it such as FTP, should I just port forward 1-10000 so I don't have to worry about port forwarding each individual port?     I have installed InterBase on a Windows Server 2008, added a database through IBConsole and I'm trying to set up a connection to it from Delphi XE. I've clicked on the DataExplorer tab and right clicked "INTERBASE/Add New Connection". This is where I am having trouble setting it up correctly. Anyone know this stuff?     I am writing an application that contains a web server running on port 50000. On Windows 7, short of turning the firewall off completely, I am having trouble configuring the firewall to allow other computers on the same private LAN to connect to the server. Simply adding the program to the allowed programs list doesn't seem to work. The network connection is set to be a "Home" network (but I am not using Home Networking). Trying to use the win (super) key as a modifier, but as soon as I press the win key the keyboard shortcut UI just assumes I wanted to use just that key.     I've got an Apache (2) server with several virtual hosts. I currently have mysql db locks problems on one virtual host. A common and practical way to easy release those locks and unlock the site (while the dev team refactor its application to avoid the locks), is to simply restart the apache server.   • Is there any setting I can change so that alt-F4 always means close?

    There are some badly implemented programs like iTunes that are very... difficult to close, and interpret a close command (alt-f4 or clicking the 'x') as "minimize". Is there any setting I can change so that when I close a program it forces it to close, without having to go through the trouble of opening the task manager, find the program, kill it or clicking "close/quit" in 1000 different places hoping that one will do the trick?

To keep it simple, we created some shortcuts for our customers which they just need to click in order to get everything running.   • Password manager bug with Firefox 3.6.13

    I'm having trouble with the latest Firefox (3.6.13) password manager. For a website I'm working on, it doesn't fill the password field for any login credential saved. I've looked into the options "Saved passwords" list and they are all there with the correct passwords. I thought at first that the website was blocking this feature in some way, but the password managers in Chrome (on the same Windows 7 machine) and Iceweasel (in a virtual Debian 6 machine) work well. Any idea about what could cause this problem?
