• Cannot boot from USB on my Mac mini

  Two weeks ago I installed OSX 10.8 on my Mac mini. After that, my system started to hang a lot, so I tried to erase it and install OSX 10.7 again. I used carbon Copy Cloner to make the bootable USB and it can load successfully on another Macbook. However, on my Mac mini, when I press on the option button to select the USB, it loads the white screen with a ban symbol at the center of the screen. After a moment, my machine automatically shuts down. Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Edit: this is exactly the problem I have now http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-1207168.html Update 1: the hdd seems ok (from disk utility). I restored the booting partition by disk utility (drag the dmg file to that partition). After restarting and using that partition to boot, prohibited symbol is still there

• Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

  I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode. I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally. I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking. • I am looking for a script where users can create groups cms/social interaction site

  I am trying to find a Content Mangement/social interaction script that requires a person to be a part of a group. Specifically: My daughter is a cheerleader and there are a number of cheer groups she is involved in and also has friends in many others. A lot of them could use some kind of website where they can share information between their team members and coach. The coach being the controller of the group and who can join etc. "Group Leader"? One can only join the group if invited or given a password or some such security. There would be multipel groups or in this case multiple cheer squads who were registered as groups and the cheerleaders a part of their group. The coach or group leader would have control of the group calender and they may have their own calendars and be messaging between them and/or other social interactions. IN a perfect world they could modify their own pages individualy. Communication could go globally or only to the group and a "friends or buddy" system. I think you get the idea. I really like OCportal and what it does and can do but it does not have the group funcitionality I am looking for. Perhaps I am just going to need to see about getting aprogrammer to write an add on for me if ther is nothing like this out there. But if you know of any I would appreciate being pointed in that direction.

• Converting 2D coordinates from multiple viewpoints into 3D coordinates

  Here's the situation. I've got a set of 2D coordinates that specify a point on an image. These 2D coordinates relate to an event that happened in a 3D space (video game). I have 5 images with the same event point on it, so I have 5 sets of 2D coordinates for a single 3D coordinate. I've tried everything I can think to translate these 2D coordinates into 3D coordinates, but the math just escapes me. I have a good estimate of the coordinates from which each image was taken, they're not perfect but they're close. I tried simplifying this and opening up Cinema 4D, a 3D modeling application. I placed 5 cameras at the coordinates where the pictures were taken and lined up the pictures with the event points for each one and tried to find a link, but nothing was forthcoming. I know it's a math question, but like I said, I just can't get it. I took physics in high school 6 years ago, but we didn't deal with a whole lot of this sort of thing. Any help will be very much appreciated, I've been thinking on it for quite a while and I just can't come up with anything.

• Are project managers useful in Scrum?

  There are three roles defined in Scrum: Team, Product Owner and Scrum Master. There is no project manager, instead the project manager job is spread across the three roles. For instance: The Scrum Master: Responsible for the process. Removes impediments. The Product Owner: Manages and prioritizes the list of work to be done to maximize ROI. Represents all interested parties (customers, stakeholders). The Team: Self manage its work by estimating and distributing it among themselves. Responsible for meeting their own commitments. So in Scrum, there is no longer a single person responsible for project success. There is no command-and-control structure in place. That seems to baffle a lot of people, specifically those not used to agile methods, and of course, PM's. I'm really interested in this and what your experiences are, as I think this is one of the things that can make or break a Scrum implementation. Do you agree with Scrum that a project manager is not needed? Do you think such a role is still required? Why?

• How to Enable Multirow Bookmarks Toolbar?

  I have tried using Multirow Bookmarks Toolbar Plus and Roomy Bookmarks Toolbar Firefox add-ons, but the problem is that they are constantly stressing my CPU (even when idling). It probably has something to do with version 11 of the browser. Anyway, is there some clean way to increase the height of the bookmarks toolbar and allow it to display bookmarks on multiple rows? I've read a lot of articles that refer to userChrome.css and I have tried a dozen solutions, but none worked because they were outdated. Please help me with this.

• Setting up Ubuntu Server on Amazon EC2 for hosting multiple domains with wildcard subdomains

  I'm trying to set up multiple domains on my Amazon EC2 micro instance running Ubuntu Server 12.04. I installed Apache correctly and set up virtual hosts but having problems with wildcard subdomains. This is what my httpd.conf file looks like NameVirtualHost *:80 <VirtualHost *:80> UseCanonicalName Off VirtualDocumentRoot /home/username/domains/%0/html/ </VirtualHost> My DNS records (on Amazon Route 53) are: domain.tld A 1.2.3.4 *.domain.tld A 1.2.3.4 If i create a test.domain.tld directory with the html subdirectory, it works fine. But what I want to do is to redirect *.domain.tld to domain.tld in case there is no directory for the sub-domain accessed. I would also like www.domain.tld to redirect to domain.tld. The system should also work if I decide to host another website, example.com, on the server. I tried Googling a lot but without any luck. Suggestions?

• IIS SmtpSVC - Adding remote domains on the fly

  Since I am using SMTPSVC from IIS to send all mail out I have noticed some domains that reject mail regarding LFs and similar SMTP day to day basis problems. So I mostly re route these domains by using smarthosts. Now I aslo read that on IIS7 or most of them when you add a remote domain to domains you must restart SMTPSVC to take effect. I also enabled METABASE editing. So I also hoped that this will help me add remote domains on the fly. But it's not working. Should I use another SMTP: -hmailserver or similar to route DOMAINS by smarthost. We used a smarthost configuration before but ISP smarthost gets a lot on RBL Blacklist so mail comes back. Since DNS MX direct sending is more work because of troublesome domains now I got more work to monitor SMTP logs. Thank you in advance.

  First, sorry my noobs questions, but I'm mainly Windows Developer and not Web Developer :) I'm developing a single page application with a lot of css & javascript. For now the page is 1.3Mo composed by 5 section. Here are the rounded stats : Document : 10kb Style : 60kb Images : 450 kb (already compressed, include a big gallery thumbnails) Javascript : 700kb - 600kb of "framework" (jquery, jquery-ui, boostrap, modernizer, waypoint, ...) and 100kb of custom js. Fonts : 125kb And the site is not finished yet. (Will include gmap api, and some others...) My questions are : Do you have any statistics about the average weight of an SPA ? As this is the whole website, do you think it's acceptable ? Is lazy load (for images) a solution ? What will be impact for SEO ? Is the "200kb rule" of google still relevant ? Do you know great tools to detect which javascript code is not used during the the exection of a page and then the availability to optimize these 700kb of framework js stuffs ? • How to backup database dumps which only minor changes between the backups?

  I have a mysql dumpfile every night and i every one of them. Each is 14 GB in size, so my backupdrive will be full soon. The difference from one day to another are only some 100MB. How make the daily backups without wasting a lot of space. PS: i used tar to compress 1 file and the size went down to 5GB. I hoped that when i compress two files the ratio would be better, but no. 2 dumps compressed are 10Gb

• HTTP/1.1 Status Codes 400 and 417, cannot choose which

  I have been referred to here that it might be of better help, I've got a processing file which handles the user sent data, before that, however, it compares the input from client to the expected values to ensure no client-side data change. I can say I don't know lot about HTTP status codes, but I have made up some research on it, and to choose which one is the best for unexpected input handling. So I came up with: 400 Bad Request: The request cannot be fulfilled due to bad syntax 417 Expectation Failed: The server cannot meet the requirements of the Expect request-header field Now, I cannot be really sure which one to use, I have seen 400 Bad Request being used alot, however, whatI get from explanation is that the error is due to an unexistent request rather than an illegal input. On the other side 417 Expectation Failed seems to just fit for my use, however, I have never seen or experimented this header status before. I need your experience and opinions, thanks alot! • Intel Core i7-4960HQ vs. 4850HQ (Haswell) [on hold]

  I'm looking at the new MacBook Pros and trying to decide between the Core i7-4960HQ (2.6 GHz) and i7-4850 (2.3 GHz). I've found some synthetic benchmarks comparing them, but I haven't found a lot of data, so I'd appreciate any pointers to good comparisons for the Haswell family (especially these two processors). My cursory analysis seems to suggest there isn't a huge gain from the extra 300 MHz. I'd like to determine not only whether this is generally true, but also to figure out if the gains that are made in performance come at too high of cost. Is the 2.6 going to be pushing the limits of what can fit in a thin laptop without overheating? I've looked at some of Intel's documentation, but have not been able to determine what the normal and maximum operating temperature differences are for the models. In the past, there have been times that Intel's fastest models in a given range ran especially hot and/or consumed significantly more power compared to slightly slower models. Do those concerns factor into the current generation?

  I have ubuntu with samba installed. Initially My Windows were not able to see Ubuntu on my network list. After searchinga lot i found that i had to write this line in smb.conf and it worked "ldap ssl = No" Don't know why. Now my MAC is also not able to see ubunut but if click on connect to server and use smb://servername then my connection is established. Now is there any thing which i can do so that MAC can see ubuntu in share and i don't need to use connect to server thing.

• Visual web page designer for Django?

  I'm just starting my Django learning so pardon me if any part of this question is off-base. I have done a lot of web searching for information on the equivalent of a visual web page designer for Django and I don't seem to be getting very far. I have experience with Delphi (Object Pascal), C, C++, Python, PHP, Java, and Javascript and have created and maintained several web sites that included MySQL database dependent content. For the longest time I've been using one of the standard WYSIWIG designers to design the actual web pages, with any needed back end programming done via Forms or AJAX calls that call server side PHP scripts. I have grown tired of the quirks, bugs, and other annoyances associated with the program. Also, I find myself hungry for the functionality and reliability a good MVC based framework would provide me so I could really express myself with custom code easily. So I am turning to Django/Python. However, I'm still a junkie for a good WYSIWIG designer for the layout of web pages. I know there are some out there that thrive on opening up a text editor, possibly with some code editor tools to assist, and pounding out pages. But I do adore a drag and drop editor for simple page layout, especially for things like embedded images, tables, buttons, etc. I found a few open source projects on GitHub but they seem to be focused on HTML web forms, not a generic web page editor. So can I get what I want here? The supreme goal would be to find not only a web page editor that creates Django compatible web pages, but if I dare say it, have a design editor that could add Python code stubs to various page elements in the style of the Delph/VCL or VB design editors. Note, I also have the Wing IDE Professional IDE, version 2.0. As a side note, if you know of any really cool, fun, or time-saving Python libraries that are designed for easy integration into Django please tell me about them. -- roschler

• mysql settings - using the available resources

  I've got a lot of processing work I need to run on a mysql server. I've installed mysql 5.1.45-community on a Win 2007 64bit. Its running on a xenon, 3ghz 6 processors with 8 gig ram. It doesn't seem to matter what queries I run (or the number I run at the same time), when I look in task manager, I'll see one processor is out at 100%. The other 5 are idol. Memory is static at 1.54 gig. When I installed mysql, I used the wizard and selected the default "server" (not workstation) option. I feel like I should be getting more bang for my buck. Is there something else I should be monitoring or something I should change to use the other system resources???

• Choosing between a dedicated and virtual dedicated server for my startup

  I'm about to launch a startup site I've been working on for some time, and I'm just now looking over hosting plans. The site's main feature is fairly processor-heavy (a lot of text processing), so I probably need something other then shared hosting to ensure I don't get shut down for overusing resources. I would like to spend as little as possible on hosting until the site starts generating income, so under-$60/mo is my goal. One caveat is that I need a Windows box for this particular site, so it's harder to get a good deal. For that price, I can either get a bottom-tier dedicated (2gigs ram, pentium 4) or a middle-tier VPS (3gb RAM, a bit more traffic and HD) for a few bucks more per month. I had a bad experience with a low-end VPS a few months ago, so making sure that whatever I get can handle the basic traffic of a website as well as giving me what I need (extra processing power) is essential. Do you have any suggestions as to which way to go, or a certain hosting company you've worked with that you can recommend?

• Have SSIS' differing type systems ever caused you problems?

  One thing that has always infuriated me about SSIS is the fact that every package has three different type systems; to give you an idea of what I am talking about consider the following: The SSIS dataflow's type system is made up of types called DT_*  (e.g. DT_STR, DT_I4) The SSIS variable type system is based on .Net datatypes (e.g. String, Int32) The types available for Execute SQL Task's parameters are based on something else - I don't exactly know what (e.g. VARCHAR, LONG) Speaking euphemistically ... this is not an optimum situation (were I not speaking euphemistically I would be a lot ruder) and hence I have submitted a suggestion to Connect at [SSIS] Consolidate three type systems into one requesting that it be remedied. This accompanying blog post is not however a request for votes (though that would be nice); the reason is actually subtler than that. Let me explain. I have been submitting bugs and suggestions pertaining to SSIS for years and have, so far, submitted over 200 Connect items. If that experience has taught me anything it is this - Connect items are not generally actioned because they are considered "nice to have". No, SSIS Connect items get actioned because they cause customers grief and if I am perfectly honest I must admit that, other than being a bit gnarly, SSIS' three type system architecture has never knowingly caused me any significant problems. The reason for this blog post is to ask if any reader out there has ever encountered any problems on account of SSIS' three type systems or have you, like me, never found them to be a problem? Errors or performance degredation caused by implicit type conversions would, I believe, present a strong case for getting this situation remedied in a future version of SSIS so if you HAVE encountered such problems I would encourage you to leave a comment on the Connect submission accordingly. • Consolidate SQL Server Reporting Services

  I've been a big fan of consolidating as many DB's to a few SQL servers for a while and I've had great success with it. However, I've never had to deal with SQL reporting services. Has anyone migrated SSRS from a bunch of random SQL servers into a consolidated SQL server? I don't exactly know a whole lot about SSRS which is part of the problem. To my knowlege, it's one DB per SSRS instance, so it sounds like i'd need to find a way of exporting data and merging it. Basically the process used to look like: Move DB from SQL Express to shared SQL server Change point in APP to point at new SQL server With reporting services, how do I move the reporting service compenent of the DB as well? I realize I may need to tweak the app, but my question is on the SQL side.

• How can I install CentOS without a keyboard, mouse, or monitor?

  I will be buying a new computer which will be used as a CentOS server. I will put it on my home LAN, and once it is set up, will access it only through SSH. I don't want to spend a lot of money (maybe $500), and I don't want to buy another monitor or keyboard just to through them away after the server is setup. My question is how do I access the computer without a keyboard and monitor when I install the operating system? For media, I can use either the DVD or an ISO on the USB, so am good there. But how do I see what I am doing and enter commands without a monitor or keyboard? I have a Window 7 laptop, an XP laptop, and a CentOS laptop. Can I use one of my laptops to act as the MMI (Man Machine Interface)? If not, what is the easiest and least expensive option? Thank you

• Unable to connect to wireless internet(wifi) through KDE plasma desktop

  I installed the KDE plasma desktop through Ubuntu software center. I am on Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. After the install, Im unable to connect to my wifi connection in the KDE session. But I can connect to my wifi perfectly through GNOME session. I've tried a lot without much success. Also KDE doesn't store my password correctly and keeps prompting for authorization again and again. Some of the things that I noticed. Network is detected, Network name and strength is also displayed. Other characteristics also appear properly. When the credentials are supplied, it accepts them and continually displays the message "Setting network address". However this process never succeeds. At this stage the password is repeatedly asked many times but the connection is never established. Some of the other things that I did, I have also tried other things like restarting my modem and the computer. That didn't work. I tried to restart nm-applet and KNetworkManager. That didn't work either. ifconfig display all my interfaces and Mac addresses correctly. Since its working fine GNOME the drivers are fine. This is sure a KDE specific issue. Other threads related to this on the interwebs don't offer much information either. Please share a solution for this.

• MvcExtensions - ActionFilter

  One of the thing that people often complains is dependency injection in Action Filters. Since the standard way of applying action filters is to either decorate the Controller or the Action methods, there is no way you can inject dependencies in the action filter constructors. There are quite a few posts on this subject, which shows the property injection with a custom action invoker, but all of them suffers from the same small bug (you will find the BuildUp is called more than once if the filter implements multiple interface e.g. both IActionFilter and IResultFilter). The MvcExtensions supports both property injection as well as fluent filter configuration api. There are a number of benefits of this fluent filter configuration api over the regular attribute based filter decoration. You can pass your dependencies in the constructor rather than property. Lets say, you want to create an action filter which will update the User Last Activity Date, you can create a filter like the following: public class UpdateUserLastActivityAttribute : FilterAttribute, IResultFilter { public UpdateUserLastActivityAttribute(IUserService userService) { Check.Argument.IsNotNull(userService, "userService"); UserService = userService; } public IUserService UserService { get; private set; } public void OnResultExecuting(ResultExecutingContext filterContext) { // Do nothing, just sleep. } public void OnResultExecuted(ResultExecutedContext filterContext) { Check.Argument.IsNotNull(filterContext, "filterContext"); string userName = filterContext.HttpContext.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated ? filterContext.HttpContext.User.Identity.Name : null; if (!string.IsNullOrEmpty(userName)) { UserService.UpdateLastActivity(userName); } } } As you can see, it is nothing different than a regular filter except that we are passing the dependency in the constructor. Next, we have to configure this filter for which Controller/Action methods will execute: public class ConfigureFilters : ConfigureFiltersBase { protected override void Configure(IFilterRegistry registry) { registry.Register<HomeController, UpdateUserLastActivityAttribute>(); } } You can register more than one filter for the same Controller/Action Methods: registry.Register<HomeController, UpdateUserLastActivityAttribute, CompressAttribute>(); You can register the filters for a specific Action method instead of the whole controller: registry.Register<HomeController, UpdateUserLastActivityAttribute, CompressAttribute>(c => c.Index()); You can even set various properties of the filter: registry.Register<ControlPanelController, CustomAuthorizeAttribute>( attribute => { attribute.AllowedRole = Role.Administrator; }); The Fluent Filter registration also reduces the number of base controllers in your application. It is very common that we create a base controller and decorate it with action filters and then we create concrete controller(s) so that the base controllers action filters are also executed in the concrete controller. You can do the  same with a single line statement with the fluent filter registration: Registering the Filters for All Controllers: registry.Register<ElmahHandleErrorAttribute>(new TypeCatalogBuilder().Add(GetType().Assembly).Include(type => typeof(Controller).IsAssignableFrom(type))); Registering Filters for selected Controllers: registry.Register<ElmahHandleErrorAttribute>(new TypeCatalogBuilder().Add(GetType().Assembly).Include(type => typeof(Controller).IsAssignableFrom(type) && (type.Name.StartsWith("Home") || type.Name.StartsWith("Post")))); You can also use the built-in filters in the fluent registration, for example: registry.Register<HomeController, OutputCacheAttribute>(attribute => { attribute.Duration = 60; }); With the fluent filter configuration you can even apply filters to controllers that source code is not available to you (may be the controller is a part of a third part component). • Failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled

  I'm getting "Failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled" error message after installing following softwares and few updates from Ubuntu. Django, Mysql server 5.5 Mysql benchmark And i have installed few updates for ubuntu. It was showing as Security Updates for Ubuntu. After installing Updates the update manager showed that i should restart the system. On restart i got following error message. " failed to get i915 symbols, graphics turbo disabled". So i tried the work around mentioned here (using the Live CD) ie add intel_ips to the blacklist echo "blacklist intel_ips" /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf add i915 and intel_ips to /etc/modules echo -e "i915/nintel_ips" /etc/modules Now when start the system it freezes at Ubuntu splash screen. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, on Dell inspiron N1040. I need to boot the system as i have spend lot of days configuring. Python and Django. Please help EDIT : OK when i restarted the system yesterday it magically turned on. Now i can view my desktop. But one problem, i can't mount any of the drives. It says failed to mount Drive. I'm also frequently getting "Ubuntu System Failure" Error Message.

• Visually stunning maps and PivotViewer

  One of the things about PivotViewer is that it runs in the Silverlight platform and can be extended recently. One of my guys at LobsterPot, Roger Noble, has used this to incorporate a Bing Maps layer, showing items which have  Latitude and Longitude values there. We’re already talking to a hospital about using this to allow them to browse their patient data, including showing the patients on a map according to which bed they’re in. Interesting times – this will involve having custom tiles instead of the ones from Bing Maps, but the idea is similar. Of course, we’ll be using Bing Maps to show where the patients live. I should also mention that this is a work-in-progress still. Figuring out how to use PivotViewer isn’t trivial, and we’ve done quite a lot of experimenting to see how to get things working. If you find bugs, please feel free to let me know (rob_farley at hotmail will usually reach me), and we’ll add them to our list. Here are some screenshots that I made recently using the collection at http://pivot.lobsterpot.com.au/flickr – by selecting a tag, you can get a new bunch of images. A couple of images that were taken in Iceland. Some from St Mary’s Lighthouse near Newcastle, UK. And some from around Big Ben in London. I’d recommend using either Firefox or Internet Explorer if you choose to browse this yourself. It seems the Chrome browser support for Silverlight doesn’t quite handle things as nicely as we’d all like. I imagine that at some point, we may enhance the Flickr collection, to be able to search on more than tags, but as a sample collection, it seems to work quite well.
