  One of the questions that comes up frequently, is "Is it worthwhile to report errors?".Last weekend, after installing the latest StyleCop I loaded up my copy of Power Collections. I found that StyleCop was now correctly picking up a lot of missing "this." statements, however there were now a number of false positives. Anticipating the need to submit sample code, I cleaned the solution and zipped it up.I reported this at http://stylecop.codeplex.com/discussions/357319.  The stylecop administrator promoted this report to a work item (see http://stylecop.codeplex.com/workitem/7285) and I uploaded the previously prepared Zip file. The StyleCop team was able to locate the problem and it is "Fixed in upcoming 4.7.27".The conclusion:Report errors!  Prepare sample code illustrating the error.

  I have a mysql db and I have an automation script which modifies the data inside once a day. And, these columns may have changed by an user manually. What is the best approach to make the system only update the automated data, not the manually edited ones? I mean yes, flagging the cell which is manually edited is one way to do it, but I want to know if there's another way to accomplish this? Just curiosity.

• How to grant standard users access to disk partitions and flash storage?

  I have a partition that I need standard users (not administrators)to have read/write access to. However, this partition does not even appear to them as it does to me as an administrator. How can I make it so that standard users can read/write to this partition? It would be nice if they could have the ability to mount it if needed. I have the same problem with removable media - if I have a flash card in the computer, the standard users cannot see this storage media.

• Showing "Failed" for a SharePoint 2010 Timer Job Status

  I have been working with a bunch of custom timer jobs for last month.  Basically, I'm processing a bunch of SharePoint items from the timer job and since I don't want the job failing because of an error on one item, so I'm handing errors on an item-by-item basis and just continuing on with the next item.  The net result of this, I soon found, is that my timer job actually says it ran successfully even if every single item fails.  So I figured I would just set the "Failed" status on the timer job is anything went wrong so an administrator could see that not all was well. However, I quickly found that there is no way to set a timer job status.  If you want the status to show up as "Failed" then the only way to do it is to throw an exception.  In my case, I just used a flag to store whether or not an error had occurred, and if so the the timer job throws a an exception just before existing to let the status display correctly.

• How steep is the learning curve when moving from shared (cPanel) webhosting to a VPS (e.g. Linode)?

  In all shared hosting environments, one can be agnostic to the running OS. What happens in the case of Linode? I know it allows pretty flexible Linux installations, but for starters, besides choosing a distro, does one need to do more Linux sysadmin stuff besides the basic web hosting (DNS management, MySql database creations, users ftp/ssh access/ backups)? Does Linode have a module that would cover cPanel's basic features? Does one need to install/start/upgrade each aspect of LAMP (software bundle)?

• Need to test .properties one by one in every possibility?

  For example, there are some key-value configuration in .properties file. Such like someFeatureEnable=true. It must be bool type value which will be parsed by framework, in my case it's typical Java Spring configuration. Spring will handle the configuration and throw Exception when users set someFeatureEnable=123. My question is: if there many properties in .properties file, Is it worth testing them one by one? It's quite troublesome and low priority. The .properties file is always configured by tech administrator stuff. Limited chances that they will mess up the configuration. Thanks!

Has there been a slump in web development that uses databases like Mysql, or Data Warehousing here recently? Or have alternate solutions like NoSQL/CouchDB/MongoDB started to take over or what? or have I just been missing something?

Some things like bringing your work home(thinking about how to solve problems), working many hours when the timeline reaches an end an so on. I've heard being a system administrator is a lot less stressing job, since you don't have to worry about it at home. • How can I set up private, per-user sections on Joomla?

  For this weekend's GiveCamp project, my team has been tasked with adding some functionality to an existing Joomla-powered website for a non-profit. A certain type of user will login, and have access to a personal area where they can upload files, check for messages, see tasks that have been assigned, etc. Each user would have their own area. They would not be creating pages, and their information would only be visible to themselves (or a site-administrator, of course. No sort of weird HIPAA privacy involved). None of us have worked with Joomla before, but we'd like to help this non-profit. We're not sure if we're searching using the wrong terms, or if we're just not finding it. Is such a solution possible in Joomla? And/or are we better off building some standalone solution that interfaces with the same mySQL database as Joomla?

• Why can't I view a specific websites?

  I am a netwrok administrator at a small company (22 PC) and i have a problem, and i don't know which could be the cause. I can't access a specific website from the LAN. I have a server which has 2 NICs(one to ISP and one to LAN). I have installed on the server (Bind DNS server and DHCP server) Debian 6 Server. I want to mention that "nslookup mcel.co.mz", and "dig my_site" is not working perfectly, I can't access the site from inside the LAN. I can't send emails to person that are located in that domain. When I dig mcel.co.mz @8.8.8.8 the domain is resolved. Why can't I view a specific websites? www.mcel.co.mz Why can't send email to person that are on some domains? @mcel.co.mz I don't have any rule configured in Debian Server which wouldn't let me acces the site. • How do I count Internal Logical Files (ILF) and External Inputs (EI) for a dynamic form entry page?

  Assuming I have an applicant information entry screen, the number and types of fields on which can be defined by the system administrator, how do I go about counting the number of Internal Logical Files (ILFs) and Data Element Types (DETs) for the related data functions? So far I have come up with something like this: ILF #1 (control information): Field Metadata, 1 RET, ~3 DET (name, type, mandatory) ILF #2 (business data): Applicant Data, most likely 1 RET, but how many DET? Of course I could count it as 2 DET (Field ref, Value), but I am not sure that would be correct And when it comes to an External Input (EI), say, "Add New Applicant", things become even more complicated, because the number of DET corresponding to the user-editable fields is totally dependent on the control information in ILF #1, and I am out of ideas here... • installation password

  I just updated to ubuntu 11.10 and am getting "Your authentication attempt was unsuccessful." I am the only user and am the Administrator, during login on my keyring i set to logon automatically, but it still askes me for my password. So i put in my old one and it works. But when i go to install apps it asks again and nothing works! Also if i go to user accounts and try to unlock or change my password it won't let me! It says under password "None" so what's going on?! I'm new to Ubuntu! Help!

• Ubuntu one sync problem with Windows

  I installed ubuntu one (ubuntuone-3.0.2b) on my Windows 7 pc. My problem is that it does not sync my files without admin rights. The ubuntu one app gets my username and used space, but then hangs.... Then I run the app as admin and it opens, and works correctly. After I run it as admin for all users (right click properties, run as administrator for all users) then the app will not autostart with windows, but when I open the app manually it works correctly. (the uac promt comes up and I accept) I think it is the UAC promt wich prevents it from autostarting, but I do not know how to work around this. I don't know if it is a bug or a problem with windows 7.

The interface eth0 is not at all detected and when i use the menu system-administrator-network I am not getting an option for wired connection. • After Upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 missing user in login screen

  I have upgraded to 13.10 from 13.04 now after booting (even after updates and rebooting) my user id is not listed. It has a uid higher than the minimum in lightdm.conf. I have the user light display manager , guest , and remote login options in the login screen but not my ususal user id that I have been using from ubuntu 9 something. It is a normal user and an administrator so that I could authorize drivers, updates, etc... I do not have any custom display manager setup. It has been standard unity since unity was available. I can login to my account by logging in as guest opening a termial and using su - user Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

• Not your typical Permission Denied Question

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.10 (64 Bit) on my computer. (My hard drive took a powder) Before, I could "mv" files around with the command. Now when I try I get the permission denied message. I also get the message about "man sudo" when I open my terminal. I am pretty sure I did not get that before. Can I add a user/administrator and change something in my orginal admin that I cannot change myself? I am getting really frustrated with this. I do not recall having the same problem before. I tried qksudo nautilus and it appears to run then it sits there with the cursor blinking but does not move.
