  • NAnt errors when generating assembly info after project is upgraded to VS2010

    I have a project I recently upgraded to VS2010 - the project/solution files are updated, but I'm still targeting .NET 3.5. Until now, my standard NAnt build script has not given me any trouble. However, it appears that after updating the project, and updating the NAnt config to be aware of the new tooling, I am now receiving an error when autogenerating assembly information, which fails the build.   • Obj-C memory management: why doesn't this work?

    Why doesn't the following code work? MyViewController *viewController = [[MyViewController alloc] init]; [myWindow addSubview:viewController.view]; [viewController release]; As I understand, myWindow should be retaining viewController.view for as long as the window needs it. So why does this cause my app to crash on launch? (commenting out the last line fixes the problem, as expected)

  • Recursive SQL giving ORA-01790

    Using Oracle 11g release 2, the following query gives an ORA-01790: expression must have same datatype as corresponding expression: with intervals(time_interval) AS (select trunc(systimestamp) from dual union all select (time_interval + numtodsinterval(10, 'Minute')) from intervals where time_interval < systimestamp) select time_interval from intervals; The error suggests that the datatype of both subqueries of the UNION ALL are returning different datatypes. Even if I cast to TIMESTAMP in each of the subqueries, then I get the same error. What am I missing?

  • Database design for a media server containing movies, music, tv and everything in between?

    In the near future I am attempting to design a media server as a personal project. MY first consideration to get the project underway is architecture, it will certainly be web based but more specifically than that I am looking for suggestions on the database design. So far I am considering something like the following, where I am using [] to represent a table, the first text is the table name to give an idea of purpose and the items within {} would be fields of the table. Also not, fid is functional id referencing some other table. [Item {id, value/name, description, link, type}] - this could be any entity, single song or whole music album, game, movie - almost see this as a recursive relation, ie. a song is an item but an album that song is part of is also an item or for example a tv season is an item, with multiple items being tv episodes [Type {id, fid, mime type, etc}] - file type specific information - could identify how code handles streaming/sending this item to a user [Location {id, fid, path to file?}] [Users {id, username, email, password, ...? }] - user account information [UAC {id, fid, acess level}] - i almost feel its more flexible to seperate access control permissions form the user accounts themselves [ItemLog {id, fid, fid2, timestamp}] - fid for user id, and fid2 for item id - this way we know what user access what when [UserLog {id, fid, timestamp}] -both are logs for access, whether login or last item access [Quota {id, fid, cap}] - some sort of way to throttle users from queing up the entire site and letting it download ... Suggestions or comments are welcome as the hope is that this project will be a open source project once some code is laid out.

  • Two objects with dependencies for each other. Is that bad?

    Hi SO. I am learning a lot about design patterns these days. And I want to ask you about a design question that I can't find an answer to. Currently I am building a little Chat-server using sockets, with multiple Clients. Currently I have three classes. Person-class which holds information like nick, age and a Room-object. Room-class which holds information like room-name, topic and a list of Persons currently in that room. Hotel-class which have a list of Persons and a list of Rooms on the server. I have made a diagram to illustrate it (Sorry for the big size!): http://i.imgur.com/Kpq6V.png I have a list of players on the server in the Hotel-class because it would be nice to keep track of how many there are online right now (Without having to iterate through all of the rooms). The persons live in the Hotel-class because I would like to be able to search for a specific Person without searching the rooms. Is this bad design? Is there another way of achieve it? Thanks.

    The system realizes a game “Think animal”. Main use case is: 1. System offers user to think about any animal and the system will try to guess it 2. The system starts asking questions from the start of decision tree. Ex., “Question: It has fur?”, and provides possible answers – yes or no. 3. If the user answers Yes, the system proceeds to these steps: a. System tries to guess animal that has that feature, ex. “My guess: Is it bear?” and provides with possible answers – yes or no. b. If the user answer is Yes, the system offers to think off another animal 4. If the user answers is No, the system moves to No node in decision tree and moves to 2 step (and starts from asking from new node). 5. If system runs out of nodes (i.e., empty yes or no node was reached): a. the system announces that it has given up, and ask user to enter: i. What animal he had in mind ii. What is his characteristic feature b. User enters requested data c. The system creates a new node and links it to yes or no of last active node. Where i can get some information and some examples, when implementing decision tree logics in MS SQL Server and C#..? Any information will be usefull. Thanks

  • Java 6 ScriptEngine and JSON.parse problem

    The Rhino release that is included in Java 6 ScriptEngine does not have a JSON parser. I've tried including crockfords JSON2.js in my script on the scriptengine.eval(). When I try to do the JSON.parse, it ends up giving me a script error that .replace is an unknown function. .replace is referenced several places in JSON2, and it works fine inside a browser (IE7, IE8, FF3). Anyone see this and have a suggestion?

  • Apple's Sample App TopSongs has 26 Leaks, Ugh!

    Hey all, I've been building an app for a client and part of it uses Apple's TopSongs sample app to download data on another thread. I finally got enough done to start testing that part and found 1000 leaks!!! A closer look at the leaks made me check TopSongs for leaks, since none of the my methods were in leaks report. Running TopSongs returned 26 leaks. Not quite sure how to fix them, or if they are part of some library from Apple. I bet you're asking if it has 26, why do you have 1000? Well, I use their sample to make roughly 48 calls to webservices to get all the information needed on initial install (48 calls x 26 leaks = 1248 leaks!!). Later it makes at least 12 calls + 4 to check for updated information on other sections of the app. Can't do a thing about it, can't make one call, or less calls, please don't comment about this part. I seen people respond to posts that aren't necessarily answering the question the user originally posted, which in this case is has anyone tried patching up the leaks, if they are patchable, or is this a bug in Apple's libraries?   • categorize a set of phrases into a set of similar phrases

    I have a few apps that generate textual tracing information (logs) to log files. The tracing information is the typical printf() style - i.e. there are a lot of log entries that are similar (same format argument to printf), but differ where the format string had parameters. What would be an algorithm (url, books, articles, ...) that will allow me to analyze the log entries and categorize them into several bins/containers, where each bin has one associated format? Essentially, what I would like is to transform the raw log entries into (formatA, arg0 ... argN) instances, where formatA is shared among many log entries. The formatA does not have to be the exact format used to generate the entry (even more so if this makes the algo simpler). Most of the literature and web-info I found deals with exact matching, a max substring matching, or a k-difference (with k known/fixed ahead of time). Also, it focuses on matching a pair of (long) strings, or a single bin output (one match among all input). My case is somewhat different, since I have to discover what represents a (good-enough) match (generally a sequence of discontinuous strings), and then categorize each input entries to one of the discovered matches. Lastly, I'm not looking for a perfect algorithm, but something simple/easy to maintain. Thanks!

  • Password Confirmation Overlay

    Hello, I'm creating a J2EE web application that uses jQuery and Ajax to help with some of the presentation for a user-friendly interface. I've done a lot of work ensuring security around persistant login cookies, and I've decided to request the password from any user that logged in using a persistant login cookie before being allowed to make any changes that could be malicious. This request would only happen once to confirm the user is who they say they are and will last throughout the session. At present, any requests that meet this criteria has their request information stored in session and then the user is forwarded to a page to confirm their password. Once confirmed, the user's original request is then performed and the requestion information removed from session. What I would like to do is avoid all this redirection and minimize what's held in session (even if it's just for a small time), thus improving usability and convenience for the user. I believe that a jQuery overlay could allow me to prompt the user for their password (if required) and then continue to submit the request if successful. I would of originally used ThickBox, but since that's now deprecated I don't see the benefit in implementing it in an application at this development stage. However, I have tried to create an overlay using jQuery but I've scrapped every attempt as I can't seem to make it all come together. My main problem is preventing the submission when the user incorrectly types a password or cancels the overlay. Desired Flow Persistant Login Sensitive Page Submit Password Confirmation Overlay [Continue Submit | (Cancel | Incorrect] I have already created JavaScript code to encrypt the password to be sent in a parameter, but all I need now is a method of controlling the overlay and how best to use Ajax for this purpose.   • How to use a linkedList and multiple classes with my Java GUI

    How should I use a linked list with my GUI program? The program is supposed to have blocks with textareas and dropdown menus. The number of blocks depends on the number of times the user presses a button. It's supposed to be possible to put blocks within blocks. I want to store the information created, using a linked list and then saving to a file. I'm thinking, for the sub blocks, there would be linked lists within the linked list. Should I use Java.util.LinkedList? How do I add the information? A Node class? Should that be in a separate file? I started to try sitting up a linked list, but it's getting me confused. I'm still unsure about how a person is supposed to make GUI's. I've only seen really simple GUI's. Can anyone tell me how I should arrange things? At the moment, I have three files, one for the main GUI window, one for the question blocks to be inserted within that, and one for some tools to use within those two files to make the code easier to understand. But, there seems to be something wrong with the question block file, because I've been making the background white for each JPanel, and there's a gray outline around the question blocks when I run the program. I probably shouldn't paste a ton of code here...   • Testing your code before releasing to QA

    I have heard developers say that people who write code should not be the ones testing it. I am looking for peoples experience in this situation. Many times I have done my share of development, then released to the QA dept and had the code sent back to me becuase some aspect of the application was broken due to my coding, regardless of how much I had tested it prior to QA release. Does anyone on this board have a process to follow, that enables them to throughly test their code before releasing to QA?

  • How to restrict access to a class's data based on state?

    In an ETL application I am working on, we have three basic processes: Validate and parse an XML file of customer information from a third party Match values received in the file to values in our system Load customer data in our system The issue here is that we may need to display the customer information from any or all of the above states to an internal user and there is data in our customer class that will never be populated before the values have been matched in our system (step 2). For this reason, I would like to have the values not even be available to be accessed when the customer is in this state, and I would like to have to avoid some repeated logic everywhere like: if (customer.IsMatched) DisplayTextOnWeb(customer.SomeMatchedValue); My first thought for this was to add a couple interfaces on top of Customer that would only expose the properties and behaviors of the current state, and then only deal with those interfaces. The problem with this approach is that there seems to be no good way to move from an ICustomerWithNoMatchedValues to an ICustomerWithMatchedValues without doing direct casts, etc... (or at least I can't find one). I can't be the first to have come across this, how do you normally approach this? As a last caveat, I would like for this solution to play nice with FluentNHibernate :) Thanks in advance...
