• Sound does not work on the administrator profile.Works on a non-administrator profile on Windows XP

  Initially I suspected a missing driver, but then sound ( for movies,songs etc ) works fine on the other non-administrator account, but does not work when I log in to the Administrator account. And yes..I have checked the sound volume and mute status as well. Details of my system OS: Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3 (build 2600) Processor: 2.00 gigahertz AMD Athlon 64 Memory: 448 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory Board: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. • Citrix Secure Gateway not redirecting to login URL

  We have an older setup for XenApp - users log in through Citrix Secure Gateway running on a windows box. (We hope to start using a NetScaler soon.) Earlier today, connections to https://citrix.company.com/ starting throwing up a 503 error page, instead of redirecting to https://citrix.company.com/Citrix/XenApp/ If you go directly to the /Citrix/Xenapp/ URL, the user is properly directed to the login page, and can launch apps. We've restarted the service, and rebooted the server. We haven't yet tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software. Before we do this, I'm looking for ideas as to how we can get the redirect working again without a fairly major outage window. To make things more interesting, many of our users have Citrix Receiver installed, also pointed at https://citrix.company.com/. Receiver makes itself the default launcher for ICA files, and gives a connection error when it tries to load apps - probably because of the same non-functional rediect?

  There are times when one of our applications is down for maintenance and we'd like to let our users know about it before they start flooding our help desk with calls. What's the best way to notify our users of an event on the network? Some users are on our intranet, while others log in from the Web. Is there an application they can install to which we can send notifications messages? I'm interested to hear what others have come up with to address this requirement. Thanks!

• Getting HAPROXY to redirect http to https in users browser session

  We are currently using a Internet cloud provider to host our SaaS platform. The platform consists of a Firewall - Cloud Provider SLB - - Apache Web Server - HAPROXY SLB - Liferay Platform We have had to use HAPROXY because of an issue with the cloud providers SLB that meant we were unable to use it for load balancing the Liferay platform applications. I have implemented HAPROXY in our secure tier and that seems to do the trick of load balancing the requests quite adequately. However during testing we encountered a functional issue whereby selecting a sub-menu from the web portal resulted in the application hanging, using an http analyser we saw that the request being passed back to the users browser was in http, from discussing this with the software vendor it transpires that the Liferay application has some hard-coded http links, and that other customers have worked around this by using physical NLB's such as F5 and redirecting the http traffic to https. • [Zend Debugger] Cannot receive start command

  Hi I have a WAMP install (Apache 2.2.3, PHP 5.2.8) with a working Zend Optimizer. As soon as I add the php.ini lines for Zend Debugger: [Zend Debugger] zend_extension_manager.debug_server_ts="C:\zenddebugger" zend_debugger.allow_hosts=127.0.0.1/32, 192.168.0.0/16, 192.168.1.0/255 zend_debugger.expose_remotely=always and restart apache, I get a blank page and the following entry in the apache error log. [Zend Debugger] Cannot receive start command [Zend Debugger] Cannot send message Now the incredible thing is that I had it working this morning and now, after reinstalling WAMP there is no way I can get it work again. php.ini is exactly the same as it was before. I would be extremely glad to get help, I'm trying to get a working server environment going for over a month, can you believe that? I tried XAMPP, Zend Server and now WAMP and I'm going crazy slowly but surely.

• Ubuntu Upstart script hangs on start and stop

  I have an upstart script that will start a custom jetty server. When I do sudo start [myservice] nothing happens. Subsequently, sudo status [myservice] show it as: [myservice] start/killed, process 3586. Here's the script in /etc/init/[myservice].conf: description "[description]" author "[my name and email]" start on runlevel [2345] stop on runlevel [016] respawn expect fork script sudo -u www-data /path/to/grafserv-start.sh >> /tmp/upstart.log 2>&1 end-script And here is grafserv-start.sh: #!/bin/bash /usr/bin/java -Djetty.port=3070 -jar /path/to/grafserv/trunk/start.jar echo "Done starting GrafServ" I've tried redirecting the output of the script command to a tmp logfile, but that file is never created. When I start it, I just get a hang, until I ^C. Also, I tried running it with strace but that gave me a lot of stuff about sockets.

• Folder permissions when using /etc/skel and pam

  I have a Red Hat 5.8 server that is bound to active directory and users are authenticated via active directory when they log in via sftp. User home folders are created during login using /etc/pam.d/system-auth. The specific line that creates the home folder is session optional pam_mkhomedir.so skel=/etc/skel/ umask=0066 This correctly gives home folders 711 permissions so no one else can read their directories. The problem is, the pam_mkhomedir.so also modifies permissions on all folders/files inside the /etc/skel folder which I don't want. There is a public_html folder (for apache) which needs to have 755 permissions so users can create web pages. Is there a way for me to either a) stop pam_mkhomedir.so from recursively changing all the file permissions or b) create a script that creates the public_html folder after skel is copied and to set the correct permissions?

• Writing a "Hello World" Device Driver for kernel 2.6 using Eclipse

  Goal I am trying to write a simple device driver on Ubuntu. I want to do this using Eclipse (or a better IDE that is suitable for driver programming). So I: Installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop x86 on a VMWare virtual machine, Installed eclipse-cdt and linux-headers-2.6.38-8 using Synaptic Package Manager, Created a C Project named TestDriver1 and copy-pasted above code to it, Changed the default build command, make, to the following customized build command: make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 The problem I get an error when I try to build this project using eclipse. Here is the log for the build: **** Build of configuration Debug for project TestDriver1 **** make -C /lib/modules/2.6.38-8-generic/build M=/home/isaac/workspace/TestDriver1 all make: Entering directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' make: *** No rule to make target vmlinux', needed byall'. Stop. make: Leaving directory '/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic' Interestingly, I get no error when I use shell instead of eclipse to build this project. To use shell, I just create a Makefile containing obj-m += TestDriver1.o and use the above make command to build. So, something must be wrong with the eclipse Makefile. Maybe it is looking for the vmlinux architecture (?) or something while current architecture is x86. Maybe it's because of VMWare? As I understood, eclipse creates the makefiles automatically and modifying it manually would cause errors in the future OR make managing makefile difficult. So, how can I compile this project on eclipse?

• Can't get PHP Errors in IIS7.5

  I've tried the previously answered questions regarding this to no avail. Just installed PHP5 and IIS on my Windows 7 machine and I'm having trouble getting PHP Errors displayed instead of 500 Errors. In PHP; error_reporting = E_ALL display_errors = On In IIS I have htmlErrors set to Detailed which shows a detailed IIS 500 Error page. If set to Custom it shows a basic 500 Error page. If I set it to PassThrough I get a blank page (view-source reveals no code). My PHP log file is showing a Fatal PHP Runtime Error.

Anyway, I was at a local restaurant yesterday and after placing my order I was thinking about having to get home and log in to check some SQL Servers and then the thought came to me that as we were near civilisation there was likely to be a 3G signal that might actually make using the web browser on my phone bearable. It was surprisingly fast on my HTC Desire, it was almost as good as Wi-Fi. RedGate SQL Monitor works fine on the default HTC browser and here is the proof, me checking the servers while I am waiting for the meal to arrive. • RAID1 rebuild fails due to disk errors

  Quick info: Dell R410 with 2x500GB drives in RAID1 on H700 Adapter Recently one of drives in RAID1 array on server failed, lets call it Drive 0. RAID controller marked it as fault and put it offline. I replaced faulty disk with new one (same series and manufacturer, just bigger) and configured new disk as hot spare. Rebuild from Drive1 started immediately and after 1.5 hour I got message that Drive 1 failed. Server was unresponsive (kernel panic) and required reboot. Given that half hour before this error rebuild was at about 40%, I estimated that new drive is not in sync yet and tried to reboot just with Drive 1. RAID controller complained a bit about missing RAID arrays, but it found foreign RAID array on Drive 1 and I imported it. Server booted and it runs (from degraded RAID). Here is SMART data for disks. I looked at using SQLIOSim but it doesn't seem to simulate TempDB. Can anyone recommend a way to test data, log and TempDB performance? • Git on Windows Server

  I have my Git repository hosted at github.com. I would like to push updates and such to github.com and then log into my Windows server and do a git pull to get my changes. Is this optimal? It seems like whenever I try to do a git pull on the server, the files seem to get updated somehow since the last pull. And so I am unable to get the update as git says I need to commit my local (Windows server) changes. How can I use git like I want to? Or is there a better way?

I haven't found a straightforward answer in the docs, yet. Is there a recommended way to do this? In general, how do I tell puppet to place this file there or modify that file? I'm using puppet for a single node (in standalone mode) just to try it out and to keep a log of the server setup.

• After restart desktop totally black, taskbar visible, can't click items in Windows Explorer

  Situation: Windows Vista, latest updates. After restarting to complete an installation, I find myself looking at a totally black windows desktop without any icons. The start menu and taskbar, including quickstart icons, appears. Some, but not all task bar tray icons appear. The systems seems stable. When I open Windows Explorer and click "desktop" in the folder treeview, the cursor immediately jumps back to the previously selected item. No error. Same when clicking on my user's profile or my documents. When I try "save as" in, say, Notepad, nothing happens, the dialog box (which defaults to "my documents") doesn't even show. Again, no error. Nothing serious afaict in the event log. Typing something in Start Search shows "Search failed to initialize". Most programs, including Internet Explorer, Firefox etc work as expected. Anybody ever encountered such abomination?

• ms sql 2005 server role problem

  On one of our sql 2005 servers we are no longer able to give any users server roles (ex. sysadmin). It appears to be successful both through the UI and through code. But when we check in the db and in the UI the role is unchecked and not shown for the user in the master db. Permissions don't seem to be the issue as we are testing this as system administrator levels of access. There are also no errors in the log. Any ideas? Thanks, Brandon

• Single sign-on for intranet?

  I'm trying to set up a single sign-on for my intranet. I've found a couple solutions online but I'm not sure if they apply to my particular situation. I have several subdomains on the same server. One level of user should be able to access all subdomains and another level of user should only be able to access some subdomains. Signing into one subdomain should make it so you don't have to log into any others. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I'm on Ubuntu using Apache.

  I am trying to setup per-user fastcgi scripts that will run each on a different port and with a different user. Here is example of my script: #!/bin/bash BIND=127.0.0.1:9001 USER=user PHP_FCGI_CHILDREN=2 PHP_FCGI_MAX_REQUESTS=10000 etc... However, if I add user with /bin/false (which I want, since this is about to be something like shared hosting and I don't want users to have shell access), the script is run under 1001, 1002 'user' which, as my Google searches showed, might be a security hole. My question is: Is it possible to allow user(s) to execute shell scripts but disable them so they cannot log in via SSH?

• MySQL started to consume about 40% of system CPU time and got unresponsive suddenly

  I use Debian 6.0.3 x86_64 and MySQL 5.5.20-1~dotdeb.0-log from the Dotdeb repository. MySQL process started to consume a lot of "sy" CPU time serveral hours ago according to this graph. I was not able to connect to running mysqld process and had to kill it. I found nothing useful in logs. My setup seems to be quite common (I assume Dotdeb just redistributes stock MySQL versions) and I have never seen anything like this before. What is the possible root cause of this? How can I prevent this situation in the future?

  My php's mail() function just stopped working a short while ago. It's started returning FALSE. I am not much of a sysadmin so please forgive my ignorance. I set my php.ini send_path option to: "sendmail_path = /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i" and restarted apache. Then, I learnt how to test sendmail like so: sudo /usr/sbin/sendmail -bv [email protected] [email protected]... deliverable: mailer esmtp, host example.com., user [email protected] The example email is a real mail box. I have also seen unknown user messages in the mail log. Can anyone please help me debug this? Cheers, Rim

I have also tried http://code.google.com/p/innodb-tools/. But this tool fails with an error that 'blob' type is not supported. If I try to access the data using the PHP application it crashes MySQL: `100603 19:19:19 - mysqld got signal 11 ; This could be because you hit a bug. It is also possible that this binary or one of the libraries it was linked against is corrupt, improperly built, or misconfigured. This error can also be caused by malfunctioning hardware.
