• Sorting out mSSD acceleration on a Acer M3-581TG

  I recently purchased a Acer Timeline M3 Ultra, it ships with a 500GB HDD and a 20GB mSSD to use as a cache. First thing I did when I got it was format the drives and install a clean OS (on the HDD, the mSSD has nothing on it) - but now I can't figure out how everything needs to be configured in order to use the mSSD as a cache, it just looks like a standard storage drive. I've poked around in the BIOS and there is a SATA mode setting, but it only has one option (AHCI), most of the documentation I've seen on the subject says that the SATA controller needs to be in RAID mode otherwise 'Acceleration' isn't visible in the Intel SRT menu (which for me, it isn't) I've seen a few things that suggest I just need the correct partition layout, I tried this using fdisk from a Linux LiveCD but got nowhere. Any ideas? The laptop shipped with no recovery media so I'm marginally stumped. I don't have any issue with reformatting again if required.

• 504 Gateway Time-out after php fatal error

  I'm using nginx and php-fpm to develop a symfony2 based website, under ubuntu 12.10 (yes, I know I'm using a beta OS). Everything was working out fine until, due to an error on my code, I called an unexisting function, and got the following: Fatal error: Call to a member function (....) This isn't a problem (it's a bug in my code, easily fixable), but after this, no other page loads. My browser just keeps trying to load the page from the webserver, until nginx timeouts (after +- 30s, which should be some default timeout) and returns: 504 Gateway Time-out Restarting php-fpm solves the issue. Nginx logs show a timeout message, and nothing appears on php-fpm logs, even if I set them to debug level. I tried switching from fpm to fastcgi, and the same thing happens. I've looked around, but all similar error are related to big requests/file handling, which isn't the case. All the pages on my website load in a few seconds, even under development conditions (no caching, etc).

• 11.10 liveCD black screen

  Attempting to install/try ubuntu 11.10 on my new laptop, using a liveCD (and tried USB). I get the purple screen (with the man/keyboard at the bottom) and after that the screen flashes bright white before going black. Ubuntu continues to load in the background, with login sound etc but the screen is off. I have tried as many different solutions as I could find including: using nomodestep, xforcevesa, i915.modeset=0 in boot options (seperately): varying consequences, but either I end up at a blinking cursor with no prompt, a command line (startx fails: no screen found), or the original blank screen again Tried booting from VirtualBox - it crashes at the same place the screen would go blank when using a CD/USB tried 11.04: I don't have this problem BUT when trying to install, I get a ubi-partman error 141 (possibly down to the three partitions that came on my laptop... not sure why HP needed there own separate partition for HP Tools...) Model: HP Pavillion DV6 6B08SA Processor: AMD Quad-Core A6-3410MX APU with Radeon HD 6545G2 Dual Graphics (1.6 GHZ 4 MB L2 cache ) Chipset: AMD RS880M Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be able to partition the drive and install Ubuntu. I'm assuming the issue is graphics card related, although I have no confirmation of that. I have caught a glimpse of some output to do with pulseaudio and [fail], but I can't imagine why that would cause a screen problem and the sound definitely works anyway.

• How to tell httpd to preserve the proxied error message?

  I have an httpd server proxying the requests to 2 different tomcat servers. One of my server handles the authentication and returns a specific http error code 521 when the user already have a running session. My issue is httpd automatically maps this 521 error code to a 500 (internal server error) and then my client can not handle it properly. I have tried to disable ProxyErrorOverride, to remove the /error/HTTP_INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR.html.var but it does not changes anything. • How do I mount an Exchange mail store from the Windows Command Line?

  Our Exchange server is running Exchange Server 2003 Standard on the Windows Server 2003 platform. We're dealing with the mail store size issue, where if the mail store goes over the limit, it gets dismounted. While we are working with the powers-that-be on a policy that will prevent this happening in the future, I would like to see if it is possible to re-mount the mail store via the Windows CLI. I'm already monitoring the Event Logs and alerting on mail store warnings and dismounts - I'm just tired of getting up at 5am to manually re-mount the store while the political wars ensue. My alerting tools have the ability to execute a batch script when an alert is generated. I would greatly prefer a native CLI option. I'm not too keen on running some random vbscript found on the Internet and I don't really care to spend my time debugging someone else's code. PowerShell might be an option, if it can be triggered from the CLI.

• Can't access dfs namespace over vpn

  Hi Serverfault, I've recently configured 2 servers in AD on the same domain level. They are physically separated and permanently connected through a site-to-site vpn for dfs replication. All well, but when users connect to either site through vpn (from home e.g.) they can't use the domain level method: \\domain.com\data Internally this works perfectly, resolving domain.com when connected through vpn gets the correct IP. I've tried Google to figure things out. What I was able to find was that more people have this issue, no real solution found though. Can anyone explain why this is happening? Especially a solution would be really helpful! Thanks in advance.

• Greeter login screen cropped login options in 12.04

  I have a pretty newly installed Ubuntu 12.04, using Unity. My external monitor is 1920x1080 max resolution. In the Unity desktop itself everything looks great. I have an NVidia graphics card. When I start my computer and get to the Unity greeter login screen the display is oddly formatted and the resolution seems off. It looks like a zoomed view on the larger 1920x1080 screen. As such it crops the login options off to the left hand side of the screen. So I can only just see the edge of the password box for the user I want to log in with. I can log in with one account by default by blindly typing the password, but I am unable to switch to other accounts. Is there anything I can do to fix the log in screen display so that I can see the normal login options? Note: I first noticed it when I changed my desktop background and the next time I logged in I saw the issue.

• Large .tmp files in C:\Windows\Temp

  I have a Windows 2008 server which functions as a web service server, and every other week or so, the C:\Windows\Temp folder is filled with large (between 40-300 meg) files with names like: ~DF5D73.tmp, ~DFA95.tmp, etc. They appear My webservices on the server don't create any files with that type of name, and the contents don't appear to help identify them. Process Explorer indicates that w3wp.exe is currently using several of the files, but I can't imagine specifically where they're coming from. • How to keep track of previous scenes and return to them in libgdx

  I have three scenes: SceneTitle, SceneMenu, SceneLoad. (The difference between the title scene and the menu scene is that the title scene is what you see when you first turn on the game, and the menu scene is what you can access during the game. During the game, meaning, after you've hit "play!" in the title scene.) I provide the ability to save progress and consequently load a particular game. An issue that I've run into is being able to easily keep track of the previous scene. For example, if you enter the load scene and then decide to change your mind, the game needs to go back to where you were before; this isn't something that can be hardcoded. Now, an easy solution off the top of my head is to simply maintain a scene stack, which basically keeps track of history for me. A simple transaction would be as follows I'm currently in the menu scene, so the top of the stack is SceneMenu I go to the load scene, so the game pushes SceneLoad onto the stack. When I return from the load scene, the game pops SceneLoad off the stack and initializes the scene that's currently at the top, which is SceneMenu I'm coding in Java, so I can't simply pass around Classes as if they were objects, so I've decided implemented as enum for eac scene and put that on the stack and then have my scene managing class go through a list of if conditions to return the appropriate instance of the class. How can I implement my scene stack without having to do too much work maintaining it?

• Switch 302 redirect to 301 with Apache 2 ProxyPass in front of Tomcat 6

  I'm trying to optimise my site for SEO and it seems as though their is a 302 direct in action for the http requests. I'm hosting my app on a Tomcat 6 server which lies behind an Apache 2 server. I use the ProxyPass method (http://tomcat.apache.org/tomcat-6.0-doc/proxy-howto.html) to forward all requests to port 8080 (the port my app is hosted on). I've seen a lot of advice on how to set the redirect type when using the VirtualHost method but none to do with ProxyPass. The app is a Struts app that forwards users on to index.jsp when they hit the base url. Could this also be the issue? I'm grateful for any help on this one! Cheers!

• Log Files from bash script output

  I have a script that runs (this works fine). I'd like to produce logfiles from its output and still show it on screen. I have this command that creates three files from this blog: ((./fk.sh 2>&1 1>&3 | tee errors.log) 3>&1 1>&2 | tee output.log) 2>&1 | tee final.log This does exactly what I want it to. My only issue is that I create files in my script and copy them somewhere, and I'd like to copy these logfiles there too, which I can't do whilst this script is running. I also wanted to make it easier for any user to run my script, so I created another script to run this script. According to this post (see last post) I can put a . before the script name and I can use variables assigned in my called script from the first script if I use them in the first. It doesn't seem to work though and I can't figure out why or find alternative methods. Can anyone help?

• Powershell script to append an extension to a file, input from CSV

  Hi All, All I need is to have an Excel list of file paths and use Powershell to append (not replace) the same extension on to each file. It should be very simple, right? The problem I'm seeing is that if I go input-csv -path myfile.csv | write-host I get the following output: @{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\appendto.me} @{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\append_list.csv} @{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt} In other words it looks like it's outputting the CSV "formatting" as well. However if I just issue import-csv -path myfile.csv, the output is what I expect: FullName -------- C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\appendto.me C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\append_list.csv C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt Clearly there's no file called "@{FullName=C:\Users\jpalumbo\test\leavemealone.txt}" and a rename on that won't work, so I'm not sure how to best get this data out of the import-csv command, or whether to store it in an object, or what. You feel immersed in your task, focused; the task can be difficult but challenging at the same time. When people achieve flow their productivity shoots up. Programming requires a great deal of mental focus because we often need to juggle several things in our minds at once. Many like to work in a quiet environment where they can direct their full attention to the task. If they are interrupted, it may take several minutes or even hours to get back into flow. I understand there's a practice in agile development and extreme programming called pair programming. It means you put the whole software development team in one room so that communication is seamless. You do write code with your pair because this way you get instant code reviews and fewer bugs get through. I've always had problems achieving flow while doing pair programming because of constant interruptions. I'm thinking deep about an issue then all of sudden someone asks me a question from another pair. My train of thought is lost. How can you achieve and maintain flow while pair programming?

  We are currently using amazon CloudFront to serve css and according to Amazon itself, Amazon CloudFront can serve both compressed and uncompressed files from an origin server. But while i check compression it shows everything fine in origin server but it shows notcompressed checking in the link with cloudfront. e.g. http://www.port80software.com/tools/compresscheck.asp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fimgsrv.mydomain.com%2Fen-UK%2Fsomething.css it would result with Compression status: (gzip) while with cloudfront http://www.port80software.com/tools/compresscheck.asp?url=http%3A%2F%2hereisit.cloudfront.net%2F%2Fsomething.css Compression status: Uncompressed Origin server is running lighttpd with mod_deflate however, allowed config is: deflate.allowed_encodings = ("bzip2", "gzip", "deflate") [i would think, putting extra allowed encoding wont affect as such.] Here i am clueless, what is the real issue.

I haven't found a cheaper "cloud" option. I'm curious if there's any other cloud hosting option out there cheaper than S3. Uptime is not an issue because I can build failover for most things into the browser. e.g. I can use javascript to say "if the image didn't load then go to this other URL instead." FYI I'm currently using a colocation facility which is about 30% cheaper than S3 and I'm familiar with colo prices - so this question is really about "cloud" services and by that I mean services where I don't have to worry about the infrastructure.

• Limiting the speed of the mouse cursor

  I am working on a simple game where you can drag objects around with the mouse cursor. As I drag the object around quickly, I notice there is some juddering, which seems to be due to the fact that I can move the mouse cursor faster than the game's update/draw. So, although I maintain the offset from where the player initially clicked on the object, the mouse's relative position to the object shifts around slightly before settling as I move the object very quickly. The only way I have found to get smooth, exact 1:1 movement is if I turn both IsFixedTimeStep and SynchronizeWithVerticalRetrace to false. However, I'd rather not have to do that. I have also tried making a custom mouse cursor, hiding the real mouse, taking the real mouse delta and clamping it to a maximum speed. Here is the problem: In windowed mode, the "real" mouse cursor moves off the window while the custom mouse cursor (since it's movement is being scaled) is still somewhere inside the game window. This becomes bizarre and is obviously not desired, as clicking at this point means clicking on things outside the game window. Is there any way to accomplish this in windowed mode? In fullscreen mode, the "real" mouse cursor is bounded to the edges of the screen. So I get to a point where there is no more mouse delta, yet my custom cursor is still somewhere in the middle of the screen and hence can't move further in that direction. If I wanted to clamp it to the edge of the screen when the real cursor is at the edge, then I would get an abrupt jump to the edge of the screen, which isn't desired either Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to be able to limit the speed of the mouse, but also would appreciate help with the first issue (the non-smooth relative offset between mouse cursor movement and object movement).

• Google suddenly only indexes https and not http

All other parts of the site should be served over http. We wouldn't like to see any other traffic over https, nor any of our site links to appear in search engines as https. I'd like to address this issue. It seems that the following solutions are available: hand out an https specific robots.txt as such: User-agent: * Disallow: / and/or at app-level, 301 permanent redirect all requests (except the two above) to HTTP if they come in as HTTPS. My concern with the robots method is that, say (for some reason) google decided not to index http pages, disallowing https pages might mean that google has nothing left to index with disastrous consequences for our ranking. This means I'm inclined to go with a 301 redirect. Any thoughts?

• How do I log which process is deleting a file on Windows XP?

  I'm having an issue with a file getting deleted seemingly randomly throughout the day. The vendor of the software whose file is getting deleete says that another piece of software installed on the computer is deleting it, while the other software's vendor says the opposite. I've tried using Process Monitor so I can pinpoint exactly what's deleting it, but even when filtered specifically to that file, createfile operations are being triggered a few times a second, and I can't seem to filter it to deletions specifically. Is there a tool or script I can use to specifically monitor deletion attempts on a single file?

• Unable to ping remote server Nagios

  We've recently set up Nagios on one of our Amazon EC2 instances to act as a monitoring server to our other instances. nrpe was installed on our staging server stager and appears to be working fine: monitoring_server~: /usr/lib/nagios/plugins/check_nrpe -H xx.xx.xx.xx -p 5666 NRPE v2.12 The issue is - when viewing the remote server stager within the Nagios admin screen - it appears to be 'DOWN'. • Connected to wireless, but no internet access

  After installing Ubuntu 12.04 a week ago wireless internet had been working fine. It stopped working yesterday, however, and I'm at a loss for what to do even after scouring replies to similar posted problems. I have tried using Google's public DNS and turning off proxy settings on Firefox. I have used nm-tool and lshw to make sure my wireless device and driver are connected. • Installing Ubuntu on Asus G75VW (UEFI)

  You all are my last hope... help! I bought an Asus G75VW from Best Buy. It has the new UEFI BIOS instead of the old style BIOS (1980's) and has Windows 8 preinstalled. I cannot get the G75VW to install Ubuntu 12.10 in EFI mode. I did get Ubuntu to load if I changed the BIOS to CSM and the computer sees and installs Ubuntu in "legacy mode". I attempted boot repair, and Ubuntu will load after 1 minute but as legacy BIOS only. If I changed the BIOS to UEFI "Binary is whitelisted" is displayed and I get a purple screen. My goal... keep my preinstalled Windows 8 on internal drive bay 1 and install Ubuntu 12.10 on internal drive bay 2... and somehow make a choice on which to choose. I am at a loss. I am a software programmer, but I am very bad at understanding BIOS and partitioning. Any ideas? Has anyone done what I want to do. This is a full second day on my "issue"! If I cannot get Ubuntu installed, I'm returning the laptop. And "wait" until these obstacles of UEFI/EFI and properly handled to allow people to load EFI based Ubuntu without a hitch. Thanks, Dave

  I am looking for advice on the best way to share an iPhoto library between two users on the same Mac. I currently use this approach and it works fine most of the time. One issue I have is that I will get a permission error when syncing my iPod. This seems to happen if the other user has used iPhoto and I have not opened iPhoto before syncing the iPod. If I open iPhoto then sync the iPod again there is no error. How do others solve this problem?

• Firefox: tabs containing a single image sometimes show generic icon instead of thumbnail

  My version of Firefox is 3.5.9, but I've had this issue since single-image tabs started showing a thumbnail of the contained image. Typically, a tab containing a single image will use a thumbnail of the image as the icon before the tab title. Sometimes, though, this icon will be the generic “shaded sphere on blank page” (or perhaps whatever your theme defaults to). I'm guessing this happens whenever height or width is larger than 1024, but I seem to recall (perhaps erroneously) exceptions to this rule. Anyway, hopefully someone will know the definite answer to: Why does this happen? • Cannot start eventlog service

  On a windows 2k8R2 DC box the eventlog service wont start. When i try to start the service the machine returns: "Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 13: The data is invalid." event viewer wont open either. obviously, i dont have an event log for this error. ive already tried clearing the event logs. that didnt do anything. the other DC isnt experiencing this issue.

• Monitor weirdness/flickering with new Viao PCG-3112L

  I have a Sony VAIO PCG-3112L running Windows 7. It worked fine on one monitor, but now I'm using it with a 2 year old LG Flatron W2252TQ-TF. The colors are sorta off (although that might just be the monitor), but more annoyingly there are many horizontal flickering lines. It's more noticeable on non-white backgrounds. I tried rebooting the monitor, and reseting it to factory settings, but that didn't solve the issue. What could be the cause of this? The monitor works fine with an Asus netbook. I have checked that both ends of the VGA cable are plugged in between the Vaio and the monitor.
