• Asterisk failing at startup after upgrading to asterisk18

  I was using asterisk16 and asterisk16-skypeforasterisk, which was working fine. I have recently upgraded to asterisk18 and asterisk18-skypeforasterisk, after that I am receiving the following error message. Asterisk ended with exit status 1 Asterisk died with code 1. Asterisk could not start! Use 'tail /var/log/asterisk/full' to find out why. When I checked the log I got the following messages. codec_g729a.c: == Found total of 11 G.729 licenses translate.c: empty buf size, you need to supply one Now, if I remove the /var/lib/asterisk/licenses folder it works fine. • Ideas to tackle unwanted bad press/review on Google's SERP?

  After Googling our company name to our horror we've found someone on Yelp.co.uk has reviewed our company. On the SERP your eye is immediately drawn to the 2 star review some complete stranger has written, which to be honest is pure slander! The most infuriating thing is the person who reviewed our company has never even been a client/customer. It's a bit like me reviewing a restaurant having never eaten or even been in there! We've sent her a private message on Yelp to remove the review and also sent a complaint to Yelp themselves but have yet to get a reply. We've resisted going mad at the reviewer and also requested that she re-review us having just relaunched our new website (it still riles us that she's not even a client though!). We've had genuine customers/clients review us on Yelp yet this 2 star review remains on Google's SERP. Roughly how long would it take to for our new reviews to over take this review? Does anyone have any suggestions as to how we can push the review off the 1st page of Google's SERP or any creative ways in which we can tackle this issue?

• Saving Photoshop workspace doesn't remember docked panel state

  A friend of mine has recently setup his computer with a fresh install of Windows 7 and Photoshop CS5. He's having a strange issue with saved workspaces not remembering the state of docked panels. As an example, he's docked several panels on the right of the screen. The Layers panel is docked but is open, showing all layers in the document. If he saves this as a workspace, closes and reopens Photoshop and loads the workspace, the Layers panel is docked but is closed. It's not the only panel this is happening with. It's not a big problem but he's having to open 4 panels and drag them to the appropriate height each time he starts Photoshop. Does anyone know of a possible fix for this? Any insight would be great.

• Wrong screen resolution with HDMI output to HDTV

  I own an HDTV with a native resolution of 1360x768. Sometimes I plug in my laptop to watch movies, and I used to do it with a VGA cable. I've had no problem setting the laptop to the TV native resolution with the VGA cable (1360x768). Having acquired an HDMI cable recently, I can't go past 1280x720, and if I do, the TV displays "invalid format". At 1280x720, the image is viewable but not centered, so for example I can't see the windows taskbar or titlebars. I've tried both cables (VGA and HDMI) with the same settings: Laptop's display turned off and trying to set the Tv's native resolution. What could I try to fix this issue? Could it be a faulty cable? (I'm using a Thinkpad with Windows 7) EDIT: My graphics adapter appears listed as Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family (Searching for my laptop's model yields Intel GMA 4500MHD as the graphic card) I'm downloading a driver update from Intel's website. I'll report my progress when I check its behavior tomorrow.

• Using Cygwin in Windows 8, chmod 600 does not work as expected?

  I'm trying to change the the permissions to my key file key.pem in Cygwin 1.7.11. It has the permissions flags: -rw-rw---- chmod -c 600 key.pem Reports: mode of 'key.pem' changed from 0660 (rw-rw----) to 0600 (rw-------) However: ls -l key.pem still reports key.pem's permission flags are still: -rw-rw---- This reason why I'm asking is that ssh is complaining: Permissions 0660 for 'key.pem' are too open. when I try to ssh into my Amazon EC2 instance. Is this an issue with Cygwin & Windows 8 NTFS or am I missing something?

• How to deal with a valuable person going in all directions?

  I am working with someone producing user content to be included in a software application. He is not a coder, but rather an expert in his field, sharing the knowledge. His contribution, taken piece by piece is great, but he goes in all directions and has issues producing work sequentially. He works on 25 pieces of content at the same time, and as soon as he reads something 'interesting', he wants to rewrite some of his stuff to improve the quality of it. He does not converge naturally. He collects tons of informations, produces some valuable stuff, but in a completely unstructured way. We addressed this issue with him some time ago and in order to try to solve it, we created a document with the 100 items he had to fill. Problem is, it does not seem to work very well. How to deal with those people and collect information? I was thinking about a new technique: ask him to send his bits, out of order, little by little, as soon as they are ready, and keep a list of what remains to be done, and show him that list to give him direction. This situation is stressing the hell out of me. If his production was not good, I would not be trying so hard to make this work. If you have experience to share, it is welcome.

• How do you monitor the health of a mirrored disk in Windows?

  I have a Mirrored Dynamic disk on my Windows 2003 Server. How do you monitor the health of the volume? Is there a way to have the server send an email when there is an issue with the volume? Is there a way to have the server run S.M.A.R.T. tests? EDIT: Nothing says WTF like logging into a client server, running DISKPART LIST VOLUME and seeing this. • Wrong resolution for Lightdm/GDM on Ubuntu 13.04 using HDMI

  I've tried all the solution I could find on the matter so far, but the error persists. My problem is that the login screen (both under gdm and lightdm) runs with the wrong resolution, even though all is fine when I log in. The error occurs solely when I have my HDMI cable connected to my other screen. The login screen resolution becomes 1024x768 (for my 1366x768 laptop screen) and mirrored on my screen, which is 1920x1080. I've had this issue on version 12.04 (the last one before I upgraded to 13.04), but I got it fixed by adding the xrandr commands on the begining of the /etc/gdm/Init/Default file. This doesn't seem to work anymore. I've also tried telling lightdm to run a script fixing the resolution with xrandr (by editing /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf), but lightdm crashes, and I'm forced to log in with low graphic settigs. Hint: when ubuntu is loading, the resolution starts OK, then goes bad right before the login screen is initialized. Does that mean that there's nothing wrong with my graphic cards? What do you think? • How to Assure an Effective Data Model

  As a general rule in my opinion the effectiveness of a data model can be directly related to the accuracy and complexity of a project’s requirements. For example there is no need to work on very detailed data models when the details surrounding a specific data model have not been defined or even clarified. Developing data models when the clarity of project requirements is limited tends to introduce designed issues because the proper details to create an effective data model are not even known. One way to avoid this issue is to create data models that correspond to the complexity of the existing project requirements so that when requirements are updated then new data models can be created based any new discoveries regarding requirements on a fine grain level.  This allows for data models to be composed of general entities to be created initially when a project’s requirements are very vague and then the entities are refined as new and more substantial requirements are defined or redefined. This promotes communication amongst all stakeholders within a project as they go through the process of defining and finalizing project requirements.In addition, here are some general tips that can be applied to projects in regards to data modeling.Initially model all data generally and slowly reactor the data model as new requirements and business constraints are applied to a project.Ensure that data modelers have the proper tools and training they need to design a data model accurately.Create a common location for all project documents so that everyone will be able to review a project’s data models along with any other project documentation.All data models should follow a clear naming schema that tells readers the intended purpose for the data and how it is going to be applied within a project.

  I have: Tomcat with webapp deployed via mvn tomcat:redeploy. Monit, pinging the host and restarting server if ping failed. The thing is there in a moment during the redeployment when ping will fail - and this is normal, actually. So, the question is - what is the best way to teach monit to consider the fact of redeployment and not to confuse it with "real" black outs. This is of course an issue of balance between elegance, ease of implementation and scalability. The most straightforward solution I can think of - is just to shutdown monit before deployment and start it up after once again. But this if far from elegance I guess.

• vsftpd with pam_winbind.so

  I'm trying to setup vsftpd to use logins from our domain. I want the ftp users to be able to login using their active directory username/password and have be able to have full access to /media/storage/ftp/username. I setup pptp using winbind and it is working fine, so I belive the issue is with vsftpd and pam. The ftp server runs and gives 530 for the login. I turned on debug for the pam module, but I see nothing in the syslog. • How to stop XBox Music commercials while playing music in collection?

  So i decided to give Xbox Music a try, and played a song in my collection. Then moved to another song and a commercial started playing. Huh? Searching revealed others with this problem, but i didn't see any answers. Yes, i know Xbox Music plays commercials when streaming free music that you don't own, but this is mp3 music i own, on my hard drive, in my collection. MS claims "You’ll never get ads when you’re playing MP3s that are on your PC or when you’re playing music you bought from Xbox Music." (FWIW, this is running on Windows 8.1 Pro, though the problem seems to have been reported last year too, so it's probably not a new issue.)

• Changing Windows 'hosts' file in guest OS under Parallels Desktop 6

  Hi all, I am running Win7 in a Parallels Desktop 6 on Mac. I would like to modify my Windows hosts file. When doing this through notepad it says "You don't have permission to save in this location..." I am logged on as a regular windows user - not as 'local admin'. How can I edit the file? How can I grant my regular user 'local admin' rights? How can change the Windows user to 'admin' ... this option seems to be missing in my windows install... Does anybody recognize the issue? • Finding Buried Controls

  This post is pretty specific to an issue I had but still has some ideas that could be applied in other scenarios. The problem I had was updating a few buttons so their Text values could be set in the code behind which had a method to grab the proper value from an external source. This was so that if the application needed to be installed by a customer using a language other than English or needed a different notation for the button's Text they could simply update the database. Most of the time this was no big deal. However I had one instance where the button was part of a control, the button had no set ID and that control was only found in a dll. So there was no markup to edit for the Button. Also updating the dll was not an option so I had to make the best of what I had to work with. In the cs file for the aspx file with the control on it I added the Page_LoadComplete. The problem button was within a GridView so I added a foreach to go through each GridViewRow and find the button I needed. Since I did not have an ID to work with besides a random ctl00$main$DllControl$gvStuff$ctl03$ctl05 using the GridView's FindControl was out. I ended up looping through each GridViewRow, then if a RowState equaled Edit loop through the Cells, each control in the Cell and check each control to see if it held a Panel that contained the button. • Snow Leopard - Dock icons randomly disappear

  Snow Leopard works great! My mac's really fast after this. But sometimes the dock icons just disappear! I see the blue dot beneath when I click the empty space. So I know the item's there. But there are no icons! This happened for Safari and Downloads. Some people responded on the Apple forums that I should try and remove the dock's plist file. But this just restores the dock to its original settings! I don't want to lose my settings. Anyone else facing this issue with SL? Or is it a problem only I am facing? Thanks

• Double Click to open Office docs is slow, File -> Open is fast.

  I have 2 unique networks. They both share similar architecture: Windows 2003 SBS SP2 Running Symantec Endpoint Running Symantec Information Foundation Shared drives off a data partition Clients running Office 2003 or 2007 Connect to file server through mapped drives When users try to open a file from their local PC by double clicking, it will take 30-60 seconds to open. When they do File - Open, those same documents open up almost immediately. So far I've tried the following - CCleaner to parse the registry of outdated mapped drives - Disabled "using DDE" - Disabled A/V - Reboot Any ideas beyond that? Figured this question belongs here instead of SU since its the same issue on different networks.

• Address already in use - Amazon AWS

  I've run into a really weird issue. I was debugging a server 500 error script on our EC2 instance and found that we didn't have ioncube loaders installed. So I went to go install them and I created a new file at /etc/php.d/zend.ini and initially I inserted the value of extension=/usr/local/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_5.3.so and restarted httpd at which point it told me: The ionCube Loader is a Zend-Engine extension and not a module Please specify the Loader using 'zend_extension' in php.ini PHP Fatal error: Unable to start ionCube Loader module in Unknown on line 0 So I changed the contents of zend.ini to zend_extension=/usr/...etc. Now when I attempt to restart httpd I get this error: Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I can't even run /etc/init.d/httpd stop without it erroring. I've since removed zend.ini to see if that's what caused it and it doesn't seem to be. Any ideas?

• SSL client auth in nginx with multiple server section

  I want to implement ssl_verify_client in nginx. This works perfectly when I only have one server section, which listen to 443. In my case I have multiple, all listening on 443 but to different server_name. For one particular server (proxy.mydomain.com), I'm adding the SSL client verify, but when I test the connectivity with openssl s_client -connect proxy.mydomain.com:443 -cert xxx.crt -key xxx.key and then do a GET / HTTP/1.1 host: proxy.mydomain.com It's not working, 400 No required SSL certificate was sent I think nginx is not receiving the proper server_name and is directing it to the first server listening to 443. So I tried to listen on another port and it worked right away. What's the issue and how can I fix it ?

• SharePoint MOSS - Serve HTTP content on an HTTPS page without Mixed Content Warning?

  Our "portal-like" SharePoint site is served using HTTPS/SSL. So a user goes to https://web.company.com and sees content and different Web Parts. So far, no problem. The desire now is to have new Web Parts added that either frame HTTP content (such as Weather Bug) or HTTP RSS feeds. The issue that arises is that by doing this, results in a "Mixed Content" warning in the browser. Has anybody successfully been able to implement such a scenario, or one similar to it? • Glue Records creation

  I need some information on the following issue, as I would like to have it clear on my mind. I have a VPS server. All my sites hosted on this VPS are using as NameServer .gr domain, like ns1.greekdomain.gr & ns2.greekdomain.gr . The .gr domain name is a domain I own with a greek registar. Now, I want to move 2 websites with .co.uk domain names to my VPS. The co.uk domain names are registered with a UK based registar. When I went in the domain management panel, I did changed the nameservers of my domains to my ns.greekdomain.gr ns. However the panel returns an error about invalid nameservers. After digging, I found that my nameservers are not valid because they do not exist as records in the .co.uk registry. And here it starts my big trouble. The .co.uk registart tells me that I have to ask my hosting provider / .gr registar to create a new record to the .uk registry for my nameservers. The .gr registar tells me that my uk registar needs to create a new record for my ns. From Nominet (.co.uk) registry, the one employee tells me that I need to ask my uk registar, the other employee (seemed to not understand what I was asking) told me that they cannot change my nameservers for me, and she told me to contact anyone else (old hosting provider, uk registar, .gr registar) to help me with that. I can't find help from nobody. I try since the last week to transfer my websites to my VPS and I can't. So, the question is who is responsible and who is able to create glue records for my nameservers ?

• Unable to see some Russian id3 tags in ncmpc

  I'm running urxvt with the current env: $ env | grep LC LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8 The problem is either with ncurses or ncmpc and I was wondering if anyone could shed some light on what the problem might be. This could also be an issue with the ID3 tags and any advice on working with broken or misconfigured encoding settings in meta tags in mp3 files is also welcome. I have been ignoring this matter for years and it has finally gotten to me. The bizarre thing is that some filenames or tags work, while others do not. What I have tried the following: setting LC_ALL to these values (whatever is before the space) ru_RU.KOI8-R KOI8-R ru_RU.UTF-8 UTF-8 ru_RU ISO-8859-5 rebuilding the MPD database with id3v1_encoding "ISO-8859-1" or id3v1_encoding "UTF-8" I can demonstrate the problem with two screen shots, as it's the easiest way to do so: Expected output (mpc works well): Broken encoding (ncmpc):

• Leaving the field of programming. What are the options?

  A lot of graduates ask about getting into this field, but I know there are times when I (as well as many others) think about leaving, too. My issue is that I love solving problems and the act of creating something that people enjoy using, and that is what keeps bringing me back. Lately, though, programming has become less of the act of creation and about solving problems, and has become more about being "a monkey at a keyboard". Can you offer any advice with regard to: What fields would offer equivalent problem-solving challenges consistently? How you would go about doing the research, or considering the career change? Basically anything else you think would be helpful in this situation. EDIT: I guess I should clarify and say that I've been in the field about 10 years, and I have had my fair share of working environments. The place where I am at now, and even the previous two jobs, the people I worked with have been great. I've been very lucky in that respect. I'm beginning to wonder if the next step for me has little to do with actual programming and more to do with business analysis or strategic consulting. I would hate to get too much onto the business side of things though, as I like being around tech folks more.

• Project frozen - what should I leave to the people after me?

  So the project I've been working on is now going to be frozen indefinitely. It is possible that if and when the project unfreezes again, it won't be assigned to me or anybody from the current team. Actually, we inherited the project after it had been frozen before, but there was nothing left by the prior team to help us understand even the basic needs of the project, so we wasted a lot of time getting to know the project well. My question is what do you think we should do to help the people after us to best understand the needs of the project, what we have done, why we've done it, etc. I am open to other ideas of why should we leave some tracks to the others that will work on this project also. Some steps we already have taken: technical documentation (not full but at least there is some); source-control system history; estimations on which parts of the project need improvement and why we think so; bunch of unit tests. issue tracker with all the tickets we've done (EDIT) What do you think of what we've already prepared and what else can we do?

• Weird 302 Redirects in Windows Azure

  In IdentityServer I don’t use Forms Authentication but the session facility from WIF. That also means that I implemented my own redirect logic to a login page when needed. To achieve that I turned off the built-in authentication (authenticationMode="none") and added an Application_EndRequest handler that checks for 401s and does the redirect to my sign in route. The redirect only happens for web pages and not for web services. This all works fine in local IIS – but in the Azure Compute Emulator and Windows Azure many of my tests are failing and I suddenly see 302 status codes where I expected 401s (the web service calls). After some debugging kung-fu and enabling FREB I found out, that there is still the Forms Authentication module in effect turning 401s into 302s. My EndRequest handler never sees a 401 (despite turning forms auth off in config)! Not sure what’s going on (I suspect some inherited configuration that gets in my way here). Even if it shouldn’t be necessary, an explicit removal of the forms auth module from the module list fixed it, and I now have the same behavior in local IIS and Windows Azure. strange. <modules>   <remove name="FormsAuthentication" /> </modules> HTH Update: Brock ran into the same issue, and found the real reason.
