• Visual Studio Windows Forms Designer keyboard shortcuts

  Extremely basic question. Are there common actions I can perform using keyboard shortcuts in the Windows Forms designer in Visual Studio (2008)? Alternately, could I add my own keyboard shortcuts (either through settings or macros)? It'd really be nice if I could, for example, set a control to dock/undock in its parent container by typing Alt+D. Or if I could set a control's name just by typing Alt+N and typing the name. Things like that. It's just kind of tedious to click on the item, scroll in the Properties grid to the property I want to change, type the new value, scroll to the next property I want to change, etc. Which is why I have a feeling this functionality is in there already, or is easily configurable, and I just don't know about it.

• MediaElement.Position behaviour and Windows Phone 7 issue

  I have a problem, I have written a simple Media Player for Windows Phone 7 and can Play, Stop and control the Volume of a Video (loaded from a URI) however when I try to set the position, this causes the application to freeze. I have used both these lines, but either does not work: Player.Position = new TimeSpan(0, 0, 0, 0, (int)Position.Value); Player.Position = TimeSpan.FromSeconds((int)(Position.Value)); I do have this event handler: void Player_MediaOpened(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { Position.Maximum = Player.NaturalDuration.TimeSpan.TotalMilliseconds; } And have tried using the Seconds value, casting to Ints etc, however everytime I try to set the Position, the app freezes. The video otherwise plays normally - anyone know what the problem may be here?

• NoSuchPortException using RXTX Java library on Windows?

  I have followed the instructions to setup rxtx on windows from http://www.jcontrol.org/download/readme_rxtx_en.html. What I did exactly was copy rxtxSerial.dll to "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\jre\bin" and copied RXTXcomm.jar to "C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\jre\lib\ext" (my JAVA_HOME variable is set to C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.6.0_07\jre) I also added RXTXcomm.jar to my eclipse project. But when I run it, it still says "NoSuchPortException" Devel Library ========================================= Native lib Version = RXTX-2.0-7pre1 Java lib Version = RXTX-2.0-7pre1 java.lang.ClassCastException: gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver cannot be cast to gnu.io.CommDriver thrown while loading gnu.io.RXTXCommDriver gnu.io.NoSuchPortException at gnu.io.CommPortIdentifier.getPortIdentifier(CommPortIdentifier.java:218) at TwoWaySerialComm.connect(TwoWaySerialComm.java:20) at TwoWaySerialComm.main(TwoWaySerialComm.java:107) In my java file, I tell it: try { (new TwoWaySerialComm()).connect("COM4"); } and I've also tried the Java Comm API. Both cannot recognize my serial port but I am sure I followed the instruction correctly. There files are there. Does anybody have any idea what it could be?

  Hi, I have a vb windows application with 2 forms, where form2 is called from form1 using form2.showdialog() I added a web browser control to form2, and I'm getting the following error at the point where form2 is called: Current thread must be set to single thread apartment (STA) mode before OLE calls can be made. Ensure that your Main function has STAThreadAttribute marked on it. I tried: 1) adding STAThread() to the form_load() 2) I added a module to my application, and created a sub main(), with the STAThread attribute applied to it 3) I marked the sub startup() with STAThread() And none of this helped.   I have my asp.net web server setup to use windows authentication. It is authenticating just fine with my current logged in user. I can verify this by viewing ... HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.Name And I can verify that I am authenticated by viewing... HttpContext.Current.User.Identity.IsAuthenticated However, when I call the .IsInRole function I get the trust relationship error... HttpContext.Current.User.IsInRole("accounting") I have found online references to problems with supplying domain name with the role name (domain\accounting), but I still get the same error. Any suggestions on where to look or troubleshoot the problem?

• Consume a WebService with Integrated authentication from WPF windows application

  I have written a WPF windows application that consumes a .net WebService. This works fine when the web service in hosted to allow anonymous connections, however the WebService I need to consume when we go live will be held within a website that has Integrated Authentication enabled. The person running the WPF application will be logged onto a computer within the same domain as the web server and will have permission to see the WebService (without entering any auth info) if browsing to it using a web browser that is NTLM auth enabled. Is it possible to pass through the details of the already logged in user running the application to the WebService? • WCF Windows Service - Long operations/Callback to calling module

  I have a Windows Service that takes the name of a bunch of files and do operations on them (zip/unzip, updating db etc). The operations can take time depending on size and number of files sent to the service. (1) The module that is sending a request to this service waits until the files are processed. I want to know if there is a way to provide a callback in the service that will notify the calling module when it is finished processing the files. Please note that multiple modules can call the service at a time to process files so the service will need to provide some kind of a TaskId I guess. (2) If a service method is called and is running and another call is made to the same service, then how will that call be processed(I think there is only one thread asociated with the service). I have seen that when the service is taking time in processing a method, the threads associated with the service begin to increase.

  I am trying to install php on my windows 7 machine. I have installed IIS 6.x and I have also installed php. I used this tutorial http://blogs.iis.net/bills/archive/2006/09/19/How-to-install-PHP-on-IIS7-_2800_RC1_2900_.aspx The only thing I didnt understand is this part: 4) Install IIS7, making sure you install the ISAPI Extension component (for PHP-ISAPI - which is what I use) or the CGI component (if you prefer CGI) during IIS installation (ISAPI and CGI are not installed by default) Now when i go to localhost I get an error. HTTP Error 500.19 - Internal Server Error The requested page cannot be accessed because the related configuration data for the page is invalid. 4: <handlers> 5: <add name="PHP" path="*.php" verb="*" modules="FastCgiModule" scriptProcessor="C:\web\php5\php-cgi.exe" resourceType="Unspecified" /> 6: </handlers> Also php pages do not work in IE, please help

  Hi, I am using a Radio Layer Interface (RIL) Native API in Windows Mobile application. In this API, the return values / results of most functions are not returned immediately but are passed through a callback function which is passed to the RIL API. Some usage examples are found at XDA Develompent Tools and Google Gears Geolocation API. My question is, in these two examples, a mutex is used to guard the data instead of other synchronization objects. Now, will Critical Section do fine here in the use cases described by both examples? Which thread or process will actually call the callback functions?

• What's the best way to create a Windows Mobile application with multiple screens in C#

  I am creating a Windows Mobile Application in C# and Visual Studio 2008. The application will have 5-6 main 'screens'. There will also be bar (/area) with information (e.g. a title, whether the app is busy, etc) above the screens, and a toolbar (or similar control) below the screens with 5-6 buttons (with images) to change the active screen (i.e. the screens will share the top bar and toolbar) What is the best way to implement this? Use multiple forms, and just include the toolbar and top-bar in each Use a single form and something like the Tab control (but customised) to contain the screens Something else? Keeping in mind a) memory usage and b) time to switch screens. Thanks in advance. Any links, pointers etc are much appreciated.

  Has anyone written a plugin for Windows Live Writer that runs against .NET 4? I've read the .NET 4 introduces side-by-side running, so one part of the app can target .NET x and another part can target .NET 4. I thought WLW would be a good starting point to try this as previously it only supported plugins up to .NET 2. But my .NET 4 plugin never shows. Maybe they test dependencies before loading the plugins? Anyone else got this working?

  Hello all, I am having problems with the PHP function unlink. I keep getting this error: Warning: unlink(C:\wamp\www\webs\db\db_1276259188.mdb) [function.unlink]: Permission denied in C:\wamp\www\webs\pure-php-export.php on line 242 I am on a windows machine where Apache runs as the user SYSTEM. I have set the permissions of the db folder as "Full Control" for Apache's user. I thought my script might still be holding on to that file (its an uploaded file that gets used via PDO). try{ $dbh = new PDO("odbc:Driver={Microsoft Access Driver (*.mdb, *.accdb)};Dbq=$mdbFilename", $username, $password); }catch(PDOException $e){ echo $e->getMessage(); } So before I attempt to delete the file I unset the above and try to delete like so: $dbh = null; unset($dbh); if(is_file($mdbFilename)){ unlink($mdbFilename); } I really appreciate any help on this as it has been driving me mental for the past two hours!   Did anyone get that to work? I mean, unit testing .Net CF apps on Windows Mobile 6.5.3 in Visual Studio 2008. It works great for a WM 6 Pro target, but not for a WM 6.5.3 target. I get this error: The test adapter ('Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.TestTypes.Unit.UnitTestAdapter, Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityTools.Tips.UnitTest.Adapter, Version=9.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a') required to execute this test could not be loaded. Check that the test adapter is installed properly. Not enough storage is available to process this command. Yes, I can read the error text, but I don't understand the failed run. Any clues?

• Creating Windows Desktop Icon in CMake + CPack + NSIS

  I'm using NSIS package generator in CMake 2.8.1 to distribute a Qt application. Everything is working fine... except the use of CPACK_CREATE_DESKTOP_LINKS to create a desktop link to the application. I've looked through the CMake source (including it's own "bootstrap" installation definition for windows), and as far as I can tell I'm doing the same thing.   Hi All, I'm going to sound like a complete newbie here but here goes... I've just signed up for a Windows Azure account and was hoping to get a simple hello world aspx page up and running in a browser to see how it all works but I can't seem to find a simple guide to getting a very simple web application running. I've got as far as setting up a "service" and going onto the "deploy" page but it's asking me upload an "application package". I've looked on MSDN but there aren't any simple guides, just reams of documentation talking about "roles" and "development fabric". For somebody that is proficient in HTML/CSS and knows a little abit about asp.net it may just as well be in another language. So, does anybody know how to upload a simple aspx page and then access it in a browser? Jon

  I'm trying to use the TMP environment variable in a program. When I ask for tmp = os.path.expandvars("$TMP") I get C:\Users\STEVE~1.COO\AppData\Local\Temp Which contains the old-school, tilde form. A function I have no control over returns paths like C:\Users\steve.cooper\AppData\Local\Temp\file.txt My problem is this; I'd like to check if the file is in my temp drive, but I can't find a way to compare them. How do you tell if these two Windows directories; C:\Users\STEVE~1.COO\AppData\Local\Temp C:\Users\steve.cooper\AppData\Local\Temp are the same?

• How to stop worker threads in a multithreaded Windows service on service stop

  I have a Windows service that uses the producer/consumer queue model with multiple worker threads processing tasks off a queue. These tasks can be very long running, in the order of many minutes if not hours, and do not involve loops. My question is about the best way to handle the service stop to gracefully end processing on these worker threads. I have read in another SO question that using thread.Abort() is a sign of bad design, but it seems that the service OnStop() method is only given a limited amount of time to finish before the service is terminated. I can do sufficient clean-up in the catch for ThreadAbortException (there is no danger of inconsistent state) so calling thread.Abort() on the worker threads seems OK to me. Is it? What are the alternatives?

But the current problem is that the old messenger API that I had no longer works. And the current API i can only find information about addins (complicated for the end user to set up unless I make an installer), Or contact information. I would like my bot to be stand-alone (no messenger required) and have it log in it self, But I can not find information on the login process anywhere. Any ideas?

• .NET Framework 4 RTM on Windows server 2008 R2

  I've just installed .NET 4 on Windows SErver 2008 R2 x64 and I am getting 500 Internal Server Error with an ASP.NET MVC application which was previously running fine on 3.5. The application was upgraded from targeting 3.5 to target 4 and I personally built it today on my development machine (changed in VS - Properties to .NET Framework 4). On the server I installed .NET Framework 4 Client profile and Full both automatically through the Web Platform Installer. ASP.NET MVC 2 was also installed through Platform Installer. I created a new .NET 4 application pool in IIS and placed the web app in it. Also I have custom errors turned Off in web.config but even so no detailed error is displayed - just the plain IIS 7.5 500 Internal Server Error. Any suggestions?

• PHP Include Windows XP Notepad++ Editor - Nav Include Not Working - Nav Disappears

  I am creating a website, and have a tabbed horizontal menu. In order to cut back on the number of files I have to edit when I have to make changes to the menu I want to put the navigation in a separate file that I can call using a PHP include statement. When I do this, however, the nav disappears entirely from the page. The rest of the content remains, and there are no error messages. I have been looking for answers for this for weeks, and have tried every version of the PHP include statement that I could find. None of them worked. This was the last attempt. I have the file "nav.php" in a folder named "includes" in a main dir called "testsite" I use Windows XP, use NotePad++ as my text editor, and have been testing in Firefox. I can't find an answer anywhere - any help would be appreciated. Lorianna

• Screen capture from windows service

  I've got DirectShow based screen capture software. Internally it calls CopyScreenToBitmap function to grab screen. Then the picture is compressed by ffdshow. It works fine as a desktop application, but as window service, on certain computers it does not work (black picture). I've set 'Allow service to interact with desktop' and run that service on current user account. Any ideas what could be wrong? I test it on windows XP, but it is expected to work on Vista and 7 as well. Yes it works as desktop application on all computers, but on some of them (on majority of them) it fails as a service.

• What are Windows code pages?

  I'm trying to gain a basic understanding of what is meant by a Windows code page. I kind of get the feeling it's a translation between a given 8 bit value and some 'abstraction' for a given character graphic. I made the following experiment. I created a "" character literal with two versions of the letter u with an umlaut. One created using the ALT 129 (uses code page 437) value and one using the ALT 0252 (uses code page 1252) value. When I examined the literal both characters had the value 252. Is 252 the universal 8 bit abstraction for u with an umlaut? Is it the Unicode value? Aside from keyboard input are there any library routines or system calls that use code pages? For example is there a function to translate a string using a given code table (as above for the ALT 129 value)?
